Musical notes make people feel different things and even see different colors. The emotions and colors projected in under the bridge are undoubtedly sad/depressing and only get more cheerful when you get to the verse where he dies under the bridge.
Impressing someone doesn’t mean the lyrics have to apply to your feelings towards them or whatever. Also, showing some emotional depth is likely to form some sort of bond with someone.
Under the Bridge is one of the like five songs every casual guitar playing dude starts playing around campfires. No one cares about the lyrics in that context. Even then, the lyrics can be interpreted as fairly romantic as well, especially by someone not familiar with the backstory. And yeah, death of the author and all that.
