  • The Suzuki DR650 is great flatform for creating a great adventure, dual sport, or even a supermoto bike. But what is it like in stock? This Suzuki DR650 review looks at the stock bike before we started our 10 part adventure bike series. Check out the links in this vid! Time to get back into adventure riding again... but somehow wound up trying some cross training on the big fat bushpig, a brand new DR650! All silly riding done on private property. The ultimate Suzuki DR650 review. The wheelie beast. I've owned a pile of different bikes and for some reason the old DR650 is the one that enjoyed itself with the front wheel in the air. Why? Buggered if I know. Designed back in the jurassic era, it's one of the few dinosaurs left, just read the Suzuki DR650 reviews. Air cooled. Five speed. Cable clutch. It has barely changed since 1996. And the Suzuki DR650 comes highly restricted from the factory but will still pop the front wheel up everywhere even in the ridiculously high third gear if you read the stock Suzuki DR650 review. For some reason they outsourced to this design team for the DR650. Tyre shredding acceleration. Chain snapping torque. Bowel loosening thrills. Long recognised as the best motorcycle ever built in Suzuki DR650 reviews, it has also faced extreme prejudice due to its phenomemal power output. Seen as an unfair advantage, the DR650 has been banned from all major motosports including motocross, moto GP and enduro. Are you ready to risk your life for the ultimate ride on the DR650 epic enduro beast? We still don't know the horsepower of the DR650 because it keeps breaking they dyno machine. Who created this absurdly powerful bike? It wasn't the usual Suzuki engineers according to Suzuki DR650 reviews. These misfits also went on to design the DR800 which was taken out of production when it killed too many riders. The cross training enduro vids on our dirt bike channel apply the same skills to enduro bikes - you'll be amazed at the difference it makes in terms of traction and advanced techniques such as jumping up vertical rock faces ... and wheelies! Everything in tough gnarly terrain is trying to throw you off balance, so balancing lays a foundation for enduro skills for guys like Jonny Walker and Ruben Chadwick. Anyway I only did this video because supporters asked if I could string together all the Suzuki DR650 wheelie vids in one video. The many faces of the Suzuki DR650. Trials. Desert racing. Motocross. And Moto G P. Should you buy a Suzuki DR650? Just remember this important statistic. And good luck old chap. Getting into trials riding... Losing traction is a cardinal sin in trials riding and riders go to extreme lengths to ensure their tires don't slip. Thankfully the DR1800 never went into production. Although that can get a bit nerve wracking as it means highway speed and beyond which could be nasty if it flipped according to Suzuki DR650 reviews. The weird thing is at one point I owned a KTM 690 and it was much harder to wheelie, not an epic enduro beast. Sure, it put out close to double the horsepower but it felt harder to lift and keep on the balance point. Maybe it was just me, but I was extremely disappointed and of course went back to a Suzuki DR650 (not just for the wheelies of course). These Suzuki DR650 bikes have certainly carved out a reputation for themselves. The massive single just made the bike jump up and down on the one spot. A major problem faced was obtaining test riders for the DR650. They did not need to be skilled riders. Suzuki needed riders who had a death wish, or had a sufficiently low I Q that they were unable to assess the risks involved. Being such an old design, they have a ridiculously long list of known issues, and a few of these can actually kill the engine. But many of us enjoy the process of fixing these, update the suspension, and end up with an ultra reliable bike that is way cheaper than its bling ridden adventure competititors. If you are interested, I've done an entire series and Suzuki DR650 review on transforming the Suzuki DR650 into a kick arse adventure bike... and wheelie beast. Most trials techniques involve exact use of the clutch e.g. feathering the clutch for traction control up hills... dropping the clutch to launch the bike into the air as Jonny Walker and Graham Jarvis can do on extreme enduro racing bikes and trials bikes. Same here Kastro. I kept that DR650 completely stock for a few months... and I'm doing the same with my new one I just bought a few months ago. The only mod that might be worth doing straight away is Plex valves for the front forks. It dramatically improves the suspension for both road and offroad riding and generally the bike will be a bit safer e.g. you won't have the front end diving under heavy braking.

I gotta ask: my brand new stock 650 (bought it with 0 miles on it) has about 75 miles on it tonight. I was riding in the dark, looked down, and noticed my header pipe is glowing red! WTF? I coasted home and got on the forums. Seems other's have noticed it on their's, and it is much more noticeable at night. I Don't like it, it seems...dangerous or something. The thin steel is only .60 thick is what they are saying. Have you noticed this on your 650?

Well, yeah, that, and he's complaining about the crappy suspension, tires, and weight, etc., but hey, look at the places he is riding that thing! And HOW he is riding it, I mean he is seriously ripping on that thing on some very nasty terrain. I'd say the DR650 is doing a great job, stock! I mean it's a BIG bike! Now imagine trying to ride those same trails, creeks, rocks, roots, and hills on a Harley Davidson Sportster. Yeah that's right, then the DR650 would feel like the finest dirt bike in the world! Lol.. The only reason I make that comparison is because back in the old days, that's what they did, they bought a Sportster, put some knobbies on it and took off the lights, and rode it off-road, they did the same with with BSA's and Triumphs too. Because back then, there were no dirt bikes and street bikes, there were just motorcycles! Lol

I've been riding my DR650 on all sorts of off-road terrain in Colorado for many years. It is a VERY capable off-road bike, and, a very good street bike too. Of course I did put better tires on mine for riding off-road (Pirelli MT21's), but I didn't do a thing to the suspension, it works just fine for me.

Finally have the cash to pick one up and looking daily. I see a 1997 DR650 that looks good in my area. My goal is to ride mostly trails, so deciding between a 4 stroke or 2 stroke, 250, 500, 0r bigger....so many questions. I have a 3k budget to find a used bike. Do you recommend DR over any other at that price range? KLR 250 any good? CROSS TRAINING ENDURO
I don’t think there’s a big enough market for high displacement smokers as there are already so many people preferring the 250cc or even 125cc 2 strokes. The people that want more low end torque simply need to buy 4 strokes which is sad.
My dad owns a 380 and he said that when I’m able to kickstart it, I would be allowed to drive it. Now that I got quite bored of my Beta rr50 racing I tried kickstarting it and after a few attempts succeeded. (Mind you, this is quite a big upgrade for me as a 15 year old and I’m still ecstatic about this so I probably sound like a bragging a-hole😅)
I literally have no words to describe how I felt driving this thing! I had to rethink big parts of my driving habits, like not holding the throttle wide open while shifting as leaving the throttle slightly open while shifting already results in the front end coming up... XD
All of this probably sounds completely normal to you but for me it was a crazy, highly addictive experience!
Have a good day and thank you for your time!

If you want to drive like that yes the suspension needs work, but for the type of riding I do it is a dream at 71 yr, love the soft suspension, great for the back, I do off road but go slow and enjoy the scenery, but you are wright about the tires going down a hard packed at gravel at 80 kn and in to soft sand can be scary, but the worst thing about the DR 650 is the small gas tank, can't go for a good ride with out looking for gas stations, witch are hard to find were I like to ride. I am just waiting for my new 2020 DR 650 it is hear but want every thing on it before I pick it up. The only thing is I will leave the stock tires on till I ware them out, should not take all that long, Have a Versys X 300 great bike but want to feel the wind more so will keep it for cold weather and rain days. also have a Suzuki S 40 , love it to but small tank as suspension not good for rough roads. So when I get the Dr It will most likely be my main ride, well be able to feel the wind on my chest and great soft suspension for those rough roads, and like the Versys X I will have it set up for the Treker hard bags.

the previous owners were truly amazing. no matter how busy they were, they would always stop to chat with customers, help them load their bikes... even turn away business sometimes, saying "you already have great suspension and you'd be wasting your money". a role model for any business to follow.

Hard to say, Jack. If you weigh under 95kg and just ride it gently then it's not really a problem.... just be prepared for the nose dive under emergency braking. But the moment you push the bike hard and/or you are significantly over 95kg you hit the limitations pretty quickly.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 років тому +2

+Chris Boerstra both bikes need similar mods to get them set up nicely but the DR is close half the price once you've done it. the big pumpkin? i didn't like the gearbox, suspension, engine, exhaust, ergonomics for starters on a 2009 model, don't know if those things improved or not. what annoyed me was spending so much then having to spend a pile more to get the engine and suspension working properly so i just sold it... later models may have fixed the issues though? i did a more in depth report here: ktm-690r-test-review-problems.blogspot.com.au/

Forgive the garish graphics but my old (2010) DR was a sweet handler apart from the weight. The trick was KTM forks and triple clamps which bolt straight in and just need a 10 mm spacer (and KTM wheel of course). I also used a mid 90's KTM Ohlins rear shock and had it rebuilt, resprung and a new reservoir to suit the DR. i1189.photobucket.com/albums/z430/bingl/DR650EXCwithOhlins008.jpg

+jonno85uk 'light weight' is all relative isn't it? personally i think that bikes like the DR650 and ktm 690 are the lightest 'true' adventure bikes e.g. that can chug along at relatively low revs at highway speeds all day if needed and weigh around 140-145kg dry.
but many scale down to the DRZ400, and even the four stroke 250s. and in australia where adventure rides are often on rough single track, many of us adventurize enduro bikes like the WR450F.

+Sum4Seb it's paid off in some respects at least, sum4seb. was a bit surprised to find myself balancing at a standstill quite a bit, something i'd never been able to do on a DR. :)

    Dear Barry
I am absolutely in love with this bike.
And you are guilty of this ...!
    ;-)
I like this concept very much. Its a modern XR600.
Air-oil cooling, carburetor, chassis ... simple classic bike but with modern suspension and brakes.
    Very effective.
    And... with devastating engine
She will never leave you or give you problems.
    It's THE BIKE...!
But ... in Spain (and Europe, I think) is out of order.
    Very sad.
    Maybe some day...
Thanks a ton for your time, Bro...!
    ;-))))

watch out with those mirrors, you could easily set on fire the wood with them...

+Oxide333500 lol on the second ride i flipped them around and i think they acted as aerofoils to keep the front whee down.

+ramsrider14 you'd have to ask aidan gillett that, it was his suggestion.

love seeing you back on the DR. hopefully you'll be making plenty of vids on the upgrades. I got my front and rear done at MPE and it made a fuck ton of difference. mind you, i'm no lightweight myself, so it needed it more than you light blokes. its also clear that your time on the beta has made you a much better rider. for a stock DR650 you make it look pretty easy, especially on deathwings.

+SuperOrcy thanks superorcy, MPE did the suspension on my last bushpig. but FFRC have some cunning plans up their sleeves which should be very interesting....

this is gonna be good! subbed.
yes you can put lipstick on a pig and she comes out very pretty indeed.
mine had Rikor intiminators up front and a procycle shock shaft rebuild on the back. well worth it. also running IRC TR8 on front wheel and Mitas E07 on the back for general ADV touring. happy so far.
tons of other farkels well also be necessary. yup. G'luck.

+David Lipschitz the suspension mods alone make a huge difference hey david? i'm really surprised suzuki doesn't do some very basic mods that would cost very little to fix some of these issues... but i guess the accountants have more sway nowadays than anyone in the company who might still ride bikes and have the passion. :(

sad but true, I believe that 2016 is 20th year that the mighty DR had been produced, unchanged! On the other hand there is a fantastic after-market parts and farkles market and you can make the DR into just about anything you like. It could be a great tho heavy woods bike, I love mine as an adventure tourer and Jeff at pc made a crazy, fire breathing 900 street bike.
it really is a brilliant platform. or a template. Be bold, be creative and make it yours.

Cant believe you sold your DR in the first place! haha. You should swap the RMZ450 forks onto it.
Also, I can only afford to own a DR but I know I should be learning to ride off road via an actual dirt bike or trials bike. Do you have any advice on learning to ride offroad when youre limited like this? Thanks.

+Stephen the FFRC suspension guys are thinking of inventing some inserts combined with fork caps that will give adjustable damping both ways on the forks - how good would that be?! re: learning dirt techniques on the bushpig, i'll probably start a training series exactly on that topic in the next few months on the other channel. :) for the time being though, all the basic techniques on the website will be doable on the DR: crosstrainingenduro.com/cross-training-enduro-techniques.htm

That sounds great, I'll keep an eye on this series and their developments. The suspension is the only important thing I've left stock on my DR (ironic because its the single worst thing about the bike), but I think I'm about to get a Cogent Dynamics shock for the rear, and possibly their products for the front end or the full RMZ swap. Anyway, thank you for the link I'll absorb those videos and keep pushing my limits.

+Stephen i just had mine revalved at the rear, then emulators at the front, and new springs all round. transformed it of course. looking forward to FFRC's mods though, these guys are actually suspension designers and will probably come up with something new and amazing. if you are looking at budget options i provided a few in this link years ago: dr650.wikia.com/wiki/Suspension
