    The "old" AMC 232 and 258 straight 6 motors were very dependable. Sadly, you can't say the same thing about the 304 .....

      My 1974 304 gave me 145k miles and 30 years of service four wheeling without ever tearing into it and always got me home. I’ve only heard good things from others too. My 1973 258 is pretty young with only 41k but sure runs nice too.

    I have a 89 XJ, replaced engine gaskets, rear seal, and such, runs great. It has lived, and is living in a garage, and was my dads. The auto locks do not work, not sure if I will fix that or not. I had the battery cables replaced, the battery stays charged now. These are nice cars for driving the back roads. I miss the cup holders.

    I had a 90s XJ Cherokee back when it was pretty new and had an engine fire. I put it out but not before it had burned into a bunch of plastic, electrical and rubber. After three months, I went to check on it at the dealership shop and there were 5 or so others there that had fires as well.
    I have always had a Jeep around it seems. Currently have a Wrangler.
    I've been thinking about getting another of these now old Cherokees... so thanks for the reminder lol

    Old Jeeps are either love em or hate em. I just brought in my 15th Wrangler to fix and play with. That puts me in the love em column....Sweet little 1989 with the 4.2L 6 cyl. Just needs some TLC and it'll be another goodun.

    FYI- the "oil pressure gauge" on these old jeeps is fake. It is actually an "oil light". It will always read either in the middle or low just like an idiot light. I don't know why they did this but the sending unit is simply "on or off". The readings are meaningless. Don't depend on it. Get a real oil pressure gauge if you want to know what the reading actually is. All that can do is tell you if you have oil pressure or not. Yes, those fog lights are after-market. You will be surprised when you see how thin the bumper is. It is only sheet metal with a Styrofoam core.

    • @bretthibbs6083
      @bretthibbs6083 4 роки тому +1

      I have to disagree with you on the oil pressure gauge. The older ones it was a real gauge I know cause I own one that has a real gauge and my mom had the same cherokee and it was a real gauge. Jeep went to a dummy gauge in 2002 or 2003 the oil pressure is bad that's why is was showing high oil pressure I know cause i had the same problem and i replaced the sensor and it was fine

      @joemascioni3101 4 роки тому

      The inline 6 4.2L or 258 CID was Jeep until June 1991, then after that it became a 4.0L or 242 CID it was Chrysler.

      yeah, thats a big negative. AMC designed and put the 4.0 in the XJ. The XJ is not a Chrysler product what so ever and fiat wasnt in the game till 2014. The 4.0 and AW4 is easily the most reliable combo ever created.

    I had a 1996 4.0L of these. My brother-in-law fell in love with it and wanted to buy it from me. I sold it to him ans when I went out in it with him somewhere, I got in it and had forgotten how comfy the seats were. Smooth drive, very quiet. Mint condition with a 2 inch lift kit installed. I was surprised it wasnt too bad on fuel too, being it was a 4 litre auto.

    😊I had 1998 Jeep Cherokee with the inline 6. It would smoke the tires. The engine was an designed by American Motors and used by Chrysler when they bought Jeep from American Motors. Since Fiat bought Chrysler in 2009, Jeeps are not what they use to. The Chrysler Jeep build period was the best in my opinion

    We had a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Laredo and it was plagued with problems. Warped cylinder head, upper door hinge fell off same as yours, smoke (fire) coming out of the dash, paint falling off, rusting out, seats made for a munchkin, transmission failed, airbox filled with oil, engine revving uncontollably (unpredictabley). I could go on and on but we did go on a lot of fishing trips to the upper mountain lakes. Someone else now has it to play with.

    @7:48 That heater bypass valve is definitely a failure prone part. You are correct it's the same in the Ranger. My '95 Ranger XLT has had two of them explode while driving on 90F days, requiring over a gallon of coolant to refill. At least yours broke while sitting cold in the garage!

Dodge/ Chrysler and I have never gotten along well, but they’ve been great vehicles for millions of other people.
