      @@stateofopportunity1286 the game play of the New Dooms seems off to me. I still prefer the originals. Problem with Doom 2016 is that you enter a room, enemies spawn, you fight, rinse and repeat. I also don't like the excessiveness and focus on glory kills. Doom 1 and 2 had a strategic nature. I liked the large levels, enemies scattered everywhere requiring strategy, etc. Want a great example, play Doom 2 level 9-20. The enemy placement, strategy involved to defeat them, and the combat focus was very nice. Doom 3 is great but different (haunted house type game). Doom 4 is just spawn and fight. There is some strategy here and there in Doom 4 but it doesn't match the originals.

      +HowAbout NoSon It's not so unified for that to be an assertment that's true, and that in and of itself is a huge problem. That being said, a lot of it is genuinely good. The atmospheric/ musical foley is unique and really hasn't been done before or since as effectively. At the same time, a ton of the sounds were slapped together because the stuff Trent Reznor was working on had to be scrapped near the end of production because of some contractual bullshit.

      You don't undertand. It's the technical aspect that it's incredible. The way it moves in space on a 5.1 setup. The subtle aspects of it. Did you know that EVERY monster has its specific spund when it spots you, the player, when it's hurt by you and when it dies ? Three different sounds for every monster. You can know them without looking, just by sound. And all the scratches and sinister, torturous sounds going randomly throughout the game. Magnificient, the sound was one of the main strngths of the game

    I'm glad that people besides me are still willing to defend Doom3. It's one of my all time favorite games and by far favorite Doom title. I know that seems odd to say, but Doom3 is what got me into being a horror gamer to begin with. Heck, I still play it to this day every time I get the chance because I love the atmosphere and how it told the story behind it. I also agree that BFG ruined the flashlight by making it a shoulder light. Part of what made Doom3 work in the earlier areas was how you had to choose between visibility and being able to fight back. You have to memorize where opponents are or wait for them to light up their own attacks so that you can fire back at them. I loved every aspect of Doom3 from story telling to atmosphere to combat to level design. Allthough there are some things I wished they would have concluded like the guy in alpha labs that transmits to you on a low band frequency, but you take what you can get I guess.

    • @InfernalMonsoon
      @InfernalMonsoon 8 років тому +9

      I agree with you on everything there. Although the fun story is that the guy in the alpha labs who tries to contact you does actually get resolved in the Xbox port - when you find the secret area in the PC version where he contacts you for the last time, he's nowhere to be found; only an imp and a load of barrels. But in the Xbox version, you find him in the same secret area being eaten by the imp in which on alerted he will get up as a zombie to fight alongside the imp. The Xbox version has a lot of really cool additions that weren't in the PC version, one of my favourites being the ghost in delta labs and of course the built-in coop mode.
      It's really telling how lazy the BFG Edition truly was when it was just a straight port of the PC version with none of the great elements added in the Xbox port. Although the Xbox version of Resurrection of Evil is literally identical to its PC counterpart, shame it didn't have the coop.

    • @wagesofsinn3881
      @wagesofsinn3881 8 років тому

      I guess I'll have to play through the xbox version again to make sure of that because I don't actually recall there being an answer to the low band frequency guy, I do remember there was the one guy that you could hear talking to someone through a wall and he was being told to stay there before getting attacked by a demon. As for ghosts, I don't recall if Delta had a ghost, but I do remember Alpha Labs 4 having the "follow me" ghost that was a really cool effect in the game. That was on the PC version too. Of course BFG edition ruined the effect of it by taking away the bloody footprints that lead you down that hall, one of my favorite parts in that game. I'm a big enough dork in love with Doom3 that I own every version of the game that was ever released and it's worth it.

    • @InfernalMonsoon
      @InfernalMonsoon 8 років тому

      We Review Everything! It really is worth it especially with how novel and great a port the Xbox version is (It is a shame that a lot of the big, open sections are missing though, like the reactor core and parts of enpro) and I love the "follow me" and "over here" sections - they're really awesome horror set pieces that do an excellent job at allowing the player to slow down and soak in the atmosphere even more. When you replay the Xbox version, you'll know the delta labs ghost when you see it - it's an amazing set piece and really damn creepy :) I need to replay it myself at some point, the last time I gave the Xbox version a go was back in 2009, would be great to revisit.

    Out of all Doom games, Doom 3 is the most challenging one. I would still call this a Doom game because the Task is the same as the Original ones, Kill Demons, and stop the Invasion! and we all know that those words are also the main definition of Doom. so yeah this is still a Doom game, but with a bit of a horror tone!

    • @metalngames509
      @metalngames509 6 років тому +12

      I think of it as the spiritual successor to Doom 64 which was actually praised for doing all the same shit as Doom 3. It was more horror oriented, there were fewer enemies than older Doom games, it was Darker than its predecessors and very focused on puzzle solving gameplay like that of Survival Horror staples Resident Evil and Silent Hill. People praised and still praise Aubry Hodges for his soundtrack and Doom 64 for daring to be different than its action oriented predecessors. So it still puzzles me how people can hate Doom 3 and love Doom 64 when they're practically the same game in different time periods. Personally I grew up with PSX Doom, Doom 64 and Resident Evil so I always thought Doom was supposed to be more of a horror game. Plus Even Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 had their claustrophobic, dark hallways. Something Doom 2016 lacks. Now i don't hate Doom 2016. In fact I love it for returning to its roots. I just also happen to love the horror aspect of Doom as well. Sometimes even more so than the action depending on how I'm feeling that day.
      I mean just look at all the horror mods for the original doom. Horror Converter, Ghouls Forrest, Lasting Light, The Cabin, Doom 64 Absolution TC, FNAF Doom. People really like the Idea of doom being a horror game. So I think Doom 3 is a very important staple of the series.

    Doom 3 is actually an excellent game. It gives me too much anxiety for me to say it's truly fun in the same way that Doom Eternal is, but it's a roller coaster experience. Tight shooter in corridors so narrow it's hard to believe you can even dodge a fireball. Incredibly distressing sound design and the buildup of tension through story elements like the audio logs are both top notch.

    In 2004, I hated how I had to switch to the flashlight and couldn't shoot anything with it. In 2022, I really appreciate the game design philosophy around it and wouldn't want to change it today. It was a very deliberate decision made for very specific reasons, and I respect that.

  • @BassbaitGG
    @BassbaitGG 8 років тому +76

    Also I agree on the flashlight, I thought it was a great idea and I don't understand why everyone else was so annoyed with the flashlight. Like I said, the game is the embodiment of living inside of a horror movie, and that idea wouldn't be complete without some sort of weakening of the player. Given how big and powerful the player's arsenal is, that one minor trade-off made all the difference in the world toward making it feel like horror. It doesn't make it "scary" necessarily, but it makes it more of a high tension experience, being forced to switch back and forth between it in order to see what's going on and be able to engage in the combat. People don't complain about Amnesia's bullshit lantern oil inventory gameplay element, they actually praise that kind of thing as adding to the horror, so I really don't get where everyone was coming from with the flashlight being a drawback to Doom 3.

    Doom 3 is something you had to be there to truly understand. First of all, I was 2 years old when I played the first Doom. The jump in graphics was mind-blowing at the time when Doom 3 came out, like it was one of the biggest experiences of my life when it comes to games, seeing such a leap forward in graphics. I was what, 11? Or about that age. I'm the biggest Doom fan around and Doom 3 was an experience like no other when you're that age.
    However, as I grow older, I appreciate it on a different level - it's essentially the closest a game has ever gotten to "living inside a horror movie". And I mean that for better or worse. Despite lots of cheesiness and cheapness in the horror elements, the game has an atmosphere that makes you feel like you're inside of a movie similar to The Thing, or Alien, or a sci-fi horror movie of that type. It's the quietest moments of the game that impress me the most, the times between monsters, when things get "dull". Overall the game is really fucking good and while not as good as Doom 1 or 2 overall, definitely does not deserve a reputation as being a "bad game" or even a "disappointment".
    I couldn't even wait 3 minutes to start talking about this lol, I could talk about Doom forever. I actually had planned to do a retrospective that would contain Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Master Levels for Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom 3, ROE, and the Lost Mission, but I abandoned the idea because of depression and ADHD fucking over my ability to concentrate long enough to get it done.
    I had even tracked down and bought a physical copy of Doom 64 for it, but I can't exactly call that a "waste" because I'm still happy to own it either way.

    I disagree vehemently about the Resurrection of Evil boss fight, it blows Doom 3's out of the water. The Cyberdemon fight, at the end of the day, is the player running around a circle and killing minor enemies. You can accomplish it with very weak weapons and I've done it. You don't take the Cyberdemon on directly. Whereas the Dragon guy is a big pain in the ass, dodging those fireball heads and attacks from the Demon. It's a great finale that the original was missing. As for the rest of the expansion, was ok.

    It's funny, I really liked Doom 3 when it came out and as far as I can remember it was well received at the time by both the gaming press and the fans. I spent a lot of time in those days on Doom forums such as Doomworld and another one I can't remember (planetdoom? was that one?) and although there were some complaints here and there, I mostly remember an active and loyal fan community for Doom 3. I get the feeling that Doom 3 began to be seen in a more negative light as the cultural perception about Doom began to change. Sure Doom was always seen as a violent, gory, fast paced but have the impression that it got this crazy larger-than-life status mostly in the past 10 years, with stuff like Brutal Doom, youtube speedruns and also Doom memes (about the Doom comic for example). With Doom 3 they were trying to re-invent the game and do something new with the source material, although maybe not so succesfully. I loved Doom 2016 but with it, they are catering much more to the cultural perception about what Doom is.
    Kind of in the same way as Star Wars: TFA was just recycling all the iconic stuff that everyone knows from the first Star Wars movie, and that has become such an itegral part of pop culture, but making them bigger, louder and flashier.

    While most FPS games rely on taking cover aim shoot, Doom 3 was about having a fast paced strategic game, each threat requires a different tactic and weapon, what is avail for one monster would get you killed with another, also forget the notion that your back is safe ! meaning you constantly checking 360°, sound serves a purpose indicating where the demons are coming from and what type they are, forming the right strategy and picking the suitable gun
    All mixed with a horrific theme of doom, the game may start with a slow pace but later on and in reservation of evil speed becomes important, hidden items that can spawn more enemies will keep you at your toes at all time, it's all done bug free, smoothly, the atmosphere is one of kind
    The combat was refreshing sometimes you better run, dodge, take cover or lure into a better location or trap (explosive barrel)
    Doom 3 was 9.5 / 10 game for me

      There are a lot of solid indipendent and mid-tier FPS who kept the genre alive during the tougher years (Serious sam 3, Hard Reset, Shadow Warrior, Rise of the Triads, and so on), but i really hope this is the start of a new wave of '90 inspired fps, much in the way '90 rpgs came back from the grave in the last two years.
      Even the new FPS/MOBA trend seems to integrate elements from the shooters of old, at least from what we've seen so far from Overwatch and Lawbreakers.

    I'm curious as to why you maintain that _Doom 3's_ story is tongue-in-cheek; the only humor I ever managed to extract from the story was the semi-hidden text log near the end from the demons' point of view (which didn't stop it from being by far the single funniest text log I've ever read in a game, to be fair). Dr. Betruger may be ridiculous, but the game only ever seemed to be portraying him perfectly seriously despite the writing never earning as much, and the same goes for everything else in the story.

      It's about intention more than it's about presentation. You can picture the developers just geeking out as they were designing these separate elements. Thats sort of the fun or tongue and cheekness he's referring too, I think.
      It's more about the tongue and cheek vibe in it as a project, not so much as a game. If this were a movie, tongue and cheek would be the perfect way to describe.

    In my opinion Doom 3 was a fantastic game and it still is now. Just last week I finished replaying it again and I still enjoyed it just as much as when I played it when it first came out. I also played the new Doom and even though they're completely different games I enjoy both of them. Both just have their own pro's and cons:
    - In Doom 3 you enter the facility while everything is still up and running. You walk around there and everything seems to fine. The are people everywhere. They're working or taking a break or just walking around. You can talk to them and sometimes they even start a conversation with you. It gives you this feeling of really being part of the company and it's a great build-up to the action that's awaiting you. Then a guy transforms into a demon right in front of your eyes and later on there are a few more moments where you actually see people being transformed into demons. Even after hell has already broken loose you'll still come across people who are hiding somewhere. It's a great way of showing how a place can suddenly transform into hell when shit hits the fan and how there will be people who're able to hide from the demons and keep themselves alive for a bit longer. I missed this in the new Doom. It's just demons and absolutely no interaction with any humans at all and of course no transformations. It's as if you're at a place where no human being has ever been before.
    - For me the size of the maps in Doom 3 is just perfect. Nowadays everyone wants to show off by giving you insanely big maps, but I prefer smaller maps. To me the maps in the new Doom are too big. Also the map that's shown when pressing the Tab key is absolutely useless. There are outdoor areas and indoor areas consisting of several floors and when you press the Tab key you just see a big mess consisting of several layers. This map is just impossible to navigate. Doom 3 didn't even have any on-screen maps, but because of the size of the levels and great level design you didn't need one.
    - The glory kills and the chainsaw in the new Doom are so brutal and absolutely amazing. The chainsaw in Doom 3 is quite useless. It does have unlimited fuel, but it's only useful against the weakest zombies that just walk around very slowly. Try to kill an Imp with it and it has already three fireballs in your face when it's finally dead and you've got almost no more health left. In the new Doom you even take down massive enemies within a second without taking any damage yourself. On the other hand it's a shame the fuel runs out so quickly. It would have been nice if the maximum amount for fuel had been something like 20 or 25 or so. I also think it's stupid you can't use the chainsaw at all when you don't have enough fuel to kill it. If you need 3 fuel to kill an enemy and you've got only 2, why can't I just use those 2 and then finish him off with a shotgun blast?
    - In Doom 3 there are many people walking around and they all seem to be different. There seems to be a wide variety of character models for all of the people you encounter. However, I've got the feeling as if every time I encounter someone who's going to help me (like giving me access to a certain area by opening a door for me or giving me his PDA) it's always the exact same person. It's as if they created dozens of character models that are used only once in the first level of the game and you see them for just a single second while they pass you in a hallway and then you never see them again, but they created one character called HelpingNPC which is what they use for everyone helping you. Why not use some character models of people we've seen only once in the first level? When I'm halfway the game I really don't remember it's the same guy that passed me in a hallway in the intro level, but the same guy helping me every single time is something to notice.
    - When looking at the PDA in Doom 3 the volume of the environment sounds doesn't change. Very often you're standing next to some machinery making a lot of noise or there's an alarm going off. It's really annoying while reading emails and listening to audio logs is sometimes even impossible. Just turn the volume of environment sounds down to 25% or so.
    - I like the way jumping and grabbing ledges is implemented in the new Doom. The guy from Doom 3 can't even jump or step over a box that's half a meter high.
    - The new Doom has all of these weapon mods that I don't really care about. I like the simplicity of the weapons in Doom 3.
    Both of them just have pro's and cons, but I've never had any problems with the flashlight in Doom 3. There are some minor annoyances like the volume of the environment sounds when the PDA is active, but overall it's a fantastic game with a great atmosphere and even now I think it's still a great looking game. I appreciate both games. The new Doom is a nice, fast non-stop shooter that gives a great adrenaline rush while Doom has a great atmosphere and really giving you the feeling of being part of this corporation where hell suddenly breaks loose while you're there and letting you experience how it all happened through cutscenes, letting you talk to people and reading their PDAs.
    Anyway, I just finished playing Doom 3 again and now I've started replaying Prey (the original one of course), another fantastic game on the same engine with lots of innovations and originality.

    Horror set at work place, not in traditional out of reach environment, was rarely done well before Doom3. A common reoccurring theme in Doom3 was the office complex, control room, and help desk. Work place at modern cooperation is not really a mystery inspiring sight but carries much more life relating experience to many people (mostly adult male population). Even the Doom guy himself was only doing his job, despite all the paranormal occurrence.This setting taps into the psyche of employee whom is more than their job, whom often not prescribe to the safety of being an underling of the higher up, whom is part of the collective but wish they aren't. Something that seems to have slipped by you is that The Grabber was actually a developer tool for the base Doom 3 to effectively scatter random junk around in the environments. It was always there right from the beginning. But ID didn't make it playable to the players until Resurrection of Evil. If only they had kept it as an actual part of the game's arsenal instead of holding it off 'till the expansion, Doom 3 could've beat Half-Life 2's Gravity Gun to the punch. I don't understand when people say Doom isn't about horror and all about running and gunning. Now,you have that or you have this game,where you actually have to proceed with caution and feel the real messed up situation; not to mention that real combat by no way is as fluid or spontaneous as the original Doom. The biggest or core concept of Doom is it pits you against Hell; and if you aren't scared a bit or exhausted then I don't think you get the actual feel of the situation. I played both the types but as I crave indulgence more,I'd have to give Doom 3 the spot for really capturing the essence of the story. I know many die hard fans of the original Doom argue that Doom was THE classic shooter and hence needs no story and all, but I think the whole hell invasion concept requires a little more dramatization than the original one. And that, Doom 3 did perfectly.

    • @Nishan4You

      That's because Doom came out before Doom 3 and set the notion that "things should be like this". I'm not hating Doom, it was my first game and I like it.But as I said, I like indulgence and realism more and Doom 3 portrays Hell invasion and the psychological consequences quite accurately. Also, we can imagine ourselves in the place of a regular space marine and how a normal human combats hell much more easily in Doom 3 than in Doom or Doom 2016. That's another plus for me, relatable protagonist.

      I completely disagree. Do you think "Aliens" falls short as an Alien movie because it's not much of a horror film? No. It's completely ok for a sequel to go at the material with a completely different approach. And even then, Doom 3 takes a lot from Doom and Doom 2. For instance: demon ambushes and labyrinth like layouts. Doom 4 approaches doom from a different direction. It's a lot more linear (which isn't Doom like at all) but retains a lot of the action of the originals as well as the secrets. Being a "badass one man army" does not define Doom it is only a small aspect of it.

      Except that the space marines in the Doom franchise were never intended to be a normal dude fighting normal combat. Read the comic book that came out after Doom 2. It's the only direct reference in the series to the mentality of the space marines, and it's basically that they ARE one-man armies that feel little fear.
      Besides, real combat in this scenario would be to nuke the site (in a "nuke the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure" sense) or to run away. In real life, there is no possibility of success in one man facing down an army, especially when that army is made of demons who do not give or seek quarter and are stronger than any normal soldier. If the attacking army were humans, you might hold out long enough for them to run away or be cunning enough to convince one of their groups to surrender to you. The demons would simply attack until you were dead, and they'd certainly never surrender to some cunning ruse, especially because they can't communicate effectively with humans.
      Also space marines aren't supposed to be relatable protagonists. They're supposed to be empowerment fantasies; they mow down armies, go on dangerous special missions, and end wars by force of arms. The only exception to this is in Aliens, where the space marines are made out at first to be empowerment fantasies but are shown to be fairly normal people when faced with the horrors of an overwhelming force ("game over man, game over"). Even the marine in Doom 3 shows no signs of fear. There's no recoil in horror from the demons, there's no shakiness in his vision, there's no fumbling with his equipment. Even running out of ammo and being forced to reload with a demon 5 feet in front of him seemingly affects him naught, as the reload is as calm and measured as if he's out on a shooting range with friends on a nice summer day. You as the player might have felt fear and fumbled your controller, but this doesn't mean that the marine you're playing feels that same fear.
      Plus, the fact that it's the third in the series and is a major break with the first two entries in tone is pretty much always a strike against a piece. Egg Boy brings up Aliens, but there's important differences. Aliens is the second work in a series, not the third, meaning there's less of a set expectation. Aliens is closer to Alien than Doom 3 is to Doom; Aliens still works as a kind of horror movie (due to the series of deaths and systemic disempowerment of its cast), while Doom 3 does not work as an action FPS (it's too slow and plodding; to me it barely works as an FPS at all because without the flashlight I can barely see what I'm shooting)..

      You probably won’t see this, Joshino, but I want to thank you for all the Paladins content you made. It’s really weird finding you here, and it’s even weirder that I’m replying to a 4 year old comment hoping you’ll see this, but when I was a Jenos one-trick hardcore Paladins player, your content was gold to me. While I’m more disillusioned to the game now (and it seems like you might be too, lol) and haven’t touched it in over a year, your content was really cool, and I hope you come back sometime soon (maybe with something besides Paladins, if that’s what you’re looking for, lol). I just wanted to thank you for being one of the content creators I used to binge watch regularly.

    Yeah doom 3 was AWESOME... and even tho i like the new bethesda doom series , its animations look cartoonish rather than crisp-dark-fearful like doom3. Also theres too much light and too much bright/vibrant colouring in the new bethesda doom unlike doom 3 where colors and darkness gave it that scary badass vibe. Imho if the new doom would implement these things (less cartoonish animation, more darkness , more shadows, more creepy scenery, more creepy sound designing and creepier looking demons) then it would easily be undoubtably the best thing ever. I know popular opinion says otherwise but it is what it is.

    D3 is still my favourite of the series and I've played them all, extensively. People just trash the game so much because it's not run and gun like original doom was. I say - so what? It's excellent in every other way.

  • @malcolmwright5793

    The atmosphere of doom was great. I loved the intro sequence of the first couple levels letting you immerse yourself in the world, and i enjoyed combing through PDA logs to figure out more of what was going with the people of the facility. It did good worldbuilding. I suppose the only thing about it it is that the gameplay itself gets tedious after a few hours of play.
    People complain about the dependance on "monster closets" while in the same breath complaining about its lack of faithfulness to the original games, but monster closets and the occassional jumpscare *were* part of the experience of the original games, as waqs combing the environment for secrets. So i really don't understand what people say when they claim that the lack of faithfulness to the original is what led to Doom 3's shortcomings. It's shortcomings are due to its own design independant of the other dooms, and nothing else. Doom "4" is great, but there are still aspects of the original doom experience that it fails to capture, and that is not a weakness. It knows what it is, and that's a large part of what makes it great. I wish that we could be better at keeping our nostalgia in check when it comes to examining and critiquing video games that belong in a totally different era.

      Arguably Bioshock, but it wasn't really a horror. FEAR kinda' counts but it's an odd mix (horror outside of the fight scenes and militaristic fights). Didn't play Call of Cthulhu but I heard good things about it.

    There were things that Doom 3 did wrong, but what it did right, it did it better than anything else at the time. The atmosphere was unparalleled. You literally felt like you were in a base on Mars that was being overrun by hell.
    The one thing that would have made Doom 3 much better is if Id had remembered to focus on making the action as satisfying as the action in the Classic Doom games. If they had just not dropped the ball on the action, then it would have been an awesome game.

  • @JohnDoe-rj8nd

    Doom 3 is incredibly underrated. ID nailed the atmosphere. Really like how it builds up throughout the game starting off with you feeling weak with the base pistol afraid of every corner to eventually becoming powerful with an arsenal of weapons, yet with the more powerful enemies still keeps the anxiety and tension high albeit in a different manner. Even with somewhat dated graphics this game still holds up incredibly considering it's almost 20 years old.

I suppose one case doesn't invalidate the majority, but I still think that, in it's own right, it's a great game that does what it does very effectively, and absolutely defined the trajectory of the FPS horror genre for years to come.

      +Tchitchouan Inouane idk man, i can't say much about the story because i don't recall it that well, but the gameplay i remember to be pretty generic and lackluster. Regenerative health was awful, and the weapon spread gave the gunplay a "Call of Duty" feel that felt out of place in a Wolfenstein game, at least during the first half. Level design also suffered, since you never had to search for medikits, and money was only useful to buy superfluous upgrades for your already very powerful guns. It felt to me like a quick cash-grab on the license, more than a true WF game.

    • @tchitchouan
      @tchitchouan 8 років тому +3

      *****
      that's why we need an in defense of wolfenstein 2009 video to praise it's adavantages and point out it's disadvantages sure the gunplay was a bit call of dutyish and generic but it was 2009 COD was the trend so can't you really blame them for willing to bring it to other audiances rather than just the wolfenstein hardcore fans plus no one can deny it had super cool power up with the thule medallion in 4 categories veil speed sheild and empower of course the story was a bit cheesy and voice acting is laughable but it still tons of fun where they really screwed was the multiplayer they shouldn't have made a TF2 x COD hybrid they should have stuck with the RTCW formula
      the best thing i love about the game is it's weapon wheel system where you can carry 8 weapons at once you don't see that much in modern shooters with 2 weapon limit system

    I never had that much issue without the flashlight mod. I just carried a lot of ammo, had surround sound, and just shot a crap load of rounds in the general direction of anything that sounded like it wanted to kill me. At the time I had a Logitech 7.1 surround system. Games like this are much more fun when you have disturbing audio coming at you from all directions. Now I have surround Turtle Beach Headsets. It's so much more immersing to hear things in more than stereo, or from just in front of you. I'd recommend anyone that doesn't have either a pair of Turtle Beach, Triton, or whoever you choose surround headphones to get a pair. When something jumps out at you and you can hear it before you see it, it adds to that layer of paranoia.

  • @stanleysandeep

    You won't believe it, I took solid six months or more to complete Doom 3. I would generally play it during my week offs in a totally dark room in the night. I would search every nook and corner, listen to audio logs and check mails without lowering the PDA, take my sweet a*s time just taking in the incredible atmosphere id crafted so beautifully. Believe me, to this day no other game has even come close to fully realizing it's game world. It truly felt like I was hopelessly stuck on a Mars station. Ofcourse, all this was possible because of the incredible tech powering the game (for it's time) and it's mind blowing sound design.
    Looking back now, I'm so glad that I used that approach to play the game. Because none of the games that followed didn't feel as special as Doom 3. Yeah, that includes Resurrection of Evil, Dead Space and so on...

As a kid that grew up through the 90s witnessing technical milestones, Doom3 felt, albeit along side Half Life 2, the swan song of technical achievement, and I can't help but feel all games since somewhat follow on the coat tails of those two giants ever since, modern games simply do what they already did just better. but before that there was nothing quite like them.
