    One of my favorite Joes back when I was a kid. I always preferred the Joe's with more realistic looking camo or uniforms than the funky colors or unprofessional look for a unit that is supposed to be a highly trained Special Forces Unit.

    I remember in the comic he had to dress up in a Cobra uniform but he still kept his rifle. When the Baroness noticed a non-Cobra weapon and asked where he got it, Leatherneck said, "I ummmmm captured it." in a very unconvincing lie. She believed it and put him in charge of something very important because only a competent Cobra trooper can capture such a weapon.

      I remember that issue well. I have noticed that in both the toy line and the comic book Cobra, tended to favor foreign made weapons over American made weapons. Granted their are some exceptions to this(The Crimson Guard has an Armalite AR180), but it has largely been unchanged even in the new sculpt era.

    I liked your story about your Marine covers. I too had an old Marine cover as a kid and Gung Ho as my favorite followed by Leatherneck. I also think my fascination with them was a inspiration which made me enlist in the Marine Corps. Ooorah!

    I was actually going to request a review of this figure, so I'm thrilled to see him get such a caring review. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one with a soft spot for Leatherneck.

    Yes a great review from a top tier (Top 5 for me) GI Joe team figure. In 1986 I remember my Mom bringing in a few finds from freshly opened boxes at the Thrifty a block away. We head back to buy more and by the card art thumbnail on the back of the Dial Tone and Viper that were the first two I got from 1986 I knew Leatherneck was the first I had to have. I used to take my original figure with me many places and still have him. A mint figure rules the Joe team on my desk. Great one!

    Leatherneck was one of my favorites also when I was a kid. along with footloose and Dusty. I Loved those realistic looking military style figures the most.

    this was a great review. solid figure. semper fi to U.ncle S.ams M.isguided C.hildren. the animated series played to the rivalry between the navy and marines (wet-suit and leatherneck) even though gung-ho,torpedo, deep-six and shipwreck were aleady established, we never got to see that form of rivalry or friendly insults cast around. being in the navy myself(gunnersmate for 2years) i was privy to that rivalry having worked along side MARDET onboard. we would sling insults and crack jokes like "i wanted to join the marines, but they found out my parents were married", or "what does marine stand for, my a** rides in navy equipment, or muscles are required intelligence not essential." there were others but since this a family site i wont say them. i can appreciate leathernecks attitude more than when i was growing up because of that. great review once again and merry christmas to the HCC family.

      HoodedCobraCommander788 it was all in good fun. most of the wit came from the old timers, had to train up the the youngsters the right way.

    Love these 83-86 figures. This is the peak of the line for me and Leatherneck is another winner. One of the characters that I prefer the cartoon version to the comic. He and Wetsuit were great foils for each other.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  7 років тому

      Giving the characters a rivalry is a good way to develop both of them. They way they bounce off of each other tells us something about their personalities.

    Leatherneck (one of the 1986 Joes) replaced 1983's Gung-Ho (although Gung-Ho did return in 1987, with a new version) [and, funnily, was sold *at the same time* as Leatherneck].

    I have to agree with you on the rifle it's my favorite Joe rifle. I just ordered 15 bootlegs of it from China. My Vipers are also in the process of trading their arms in for Cobra AKs.

      I agree, the M16A2 with the M203 grenade launcher is a great accessory. Its one of my favorite weapons in the vintage line along with Iceberg's M60 , Low Light's sniper rifle, Flint's shotgun, Hawk version two's Colt 1911A1 pistol and Lifeline's pistol( which I believe is suppose to be a Sig Sauer P226). Having a Marine G.I. Joe character with the M16A2 is very fitting since the Marines were the branch of the Armed Forces to field it.

    I always enjoyed the antics between Leather Neck and Wet Suit, in the cartoons. But one thing did bug me about his sculpt, that you pointed out. That is the strap holding his knife. There is no other strap going across his chest, to prevent it from slipping off of his shoulder. I have owned one for years and never paid any attention to it, until now.

    • @HCC788

      I'd go with complete figures because going back and finding parts or equipment for missing items sometimes cost more than the figures themselves from what I've found out during my short time collecting

    • @RealHectorCanales

      the railway experince I would suggest you get all the realistic Gi Joes, such as Leatherneck. Guys like Sci-Fi are a little far fetch (& easier to find) or FAR WORSE COBRA LA aren't really ICONIC. Duke, Flint, Shipwreck, are all iconic figures in Gi Joe even they are not everyone's favorite (HCC isn't so crazy about Shipwreck BUT HES MY FAVORITE).

    • @mattlerch531
      @mattlerch531 7 років тому +1

      yojoe.com has a list of all joes. look them up there and pick a few that catch your eye. most figures on the market have a wide range of conditions and prices, so do your homework there first. also look out for pirated figures or the funschool (from india) versions and the off colored accessories that may come with the figure. make sure the figure you choose is complete, if not finding the right accessories maybe tough. even if the o-ring is broken, that is an easy fix, get the figure. watchout for broken thumbs and loose joints. as far as vehicles, do the same, research is key.

    Originally, I'd have had Leatherneck fight against Croc Master, but now that the Joes know an even *worse* enemy than Cobra - the Headman - I've finally ceased thinking about G.I. Joe and Cobra hating each other.

    I love the character of Leatherneck but the V1 (and 2) sculpt looks more like a scrawny math teacher than a tough marine. The third version while having a ridiculous outfit at least looks like a buff square jawed marine.
