  • Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, visited Glossop last Thursday (21/06/2024) to show his support for Jon Pearce, the Labour candidate for High Peak in the upcoming General Election.
After meeting and taking questions from local supporters in Norfolk Square, Andy was happy to chat to us about his visit, and answer a couple of our own questions.
Mr Burnham told High Peak TV that for him as Mayor of Greater Manchester he was committed to working more closely with whoever becomes the next MP in the High Peak, and work further with Claire Ward, the Labour mayor of the East Midlands, to address issues like traffic, public transport and healthcare. He told High Peak TV that Greater Manchester needs to be better neighbours, and to look beyond their borders more often, to address the impact the city has on the High Peak, and to see what more can be done to improve life here.
Mr Burnham also commented that it is critically important to maintain higher standards in the way we conduct politics in this country, and called out Conservative candidate Robert Largan's use of red posters in his campaign as "highly misleading", adding "that cannot be right, that's the kind of thing that I think brings politics into disrepute".
High Peak TV would like to thank Mr Burnham for taking the time to visit and for agreeing to talk to us.
As we wish to remain balanced and fair, High Peak TV have reached out to all the other candidates standing for High Peak in the general election, Robert Largan (Conservatives) Joanna Collins (Green) Catherine Cullen (Reform UK) and Peter Hirst (Liberal Democrats), asking them to invite senior members of their individual parties to talk to us about how they plan to help the High Peak right now, and in the future.
Please enjoy this short video, which has subtitles for your convenience.
