    This Video shows how to create weapon templates using a free program called blender. The templates help simplify the design process and allow you to design the majority of your weapon skins/finishes on a 2D side view rather than on the flat UV's/Texture map.
    If you have problems with your projection, please watch this video on fixing projection issues...

    Is see a lot of question in the video and the comments. As I use blender for a while, i'll try to give some advices and answers.
    Also, I'm french and I don't have a degree of english writing, so don't get mad at me.
    Firsts things first : Blender have a lot of tools, if you intend to use it seriously, you need to leanr some keyboard shortcuts. It will save you a lot of time. I mean, really.
    Also, in Blender, use your right mouse button to select something in the viewport.
    ► Managing the 3D view
    Using the down menus to set your view is very slow and it makes a lot of things to remember. Just remember a few shortcuts, all in the numpad : 1 for front view, 3 for right view, 7 for top, hold Ctrl with these to get their oposite, hit 0 for camera view, Ctrl Alt 0 to set the camera to your current view, and hit 5 to switch between orthographic and perspective modes.
    Also, when you are in camera view and want to get out, simply hold the middle mouse and move. If you didn't set on the "lock camera to view" mode, it will get you out and let you control your view at the same time.
    ► Open and close the side bars.
    You can see theses left and right bar in a lot of windows in Blender. The left one is named "Tools bar", the right one is named "Options bar". You can toggle them by pressing T and N. Simple.
    ► Lock the camera
    As explained arround 11:45 , if you move your view with the "lock camera to view" on, it will move your camera, destroy your 2D projection and you're good to redo the set. But there is a way to lock the camera. Turn that lock camera to view as we actually don't need it for now and it's actually handy to set it of (so that you can middle mouse as explained above). Then, with the camera selected, open the options bar (N), go to the Transform pannel. You can see all the position, rotation and scale parameters of the camera. Just click all the padlocks on the right, it will lock these parameters and you will be happy for the next minutes/hours of work.
    ► I can't paint in the UV/Image editor, i don't see the color wheel, bla bla bla
    Watch down the window, at the center. Make sure you set the UV/Image Editor from "View" to "Paint". Then open the tools bar (T), go to the tools section and enjoy.
    ► I don't see my texture in the UV/Image Editor
    By default, Blender loads the "Render Result" image (as it's the main purpose of that software). You need to load your texture in the UV/Image editor to see it.
    To load your texture image instead of the render result, watch down the UV/Image Editor window, click the little picture icon next to the "Render Result" text and select your image in the dropdown menu that just apeared. And if your texture is not there, it means that you didn't created it as showed in the video, so you have to open an extenral file via the folder icon, or create the texture file via the menu Image → New Image.

      One question: What files do I have to upload to the Steam Workshop??

    • @CoridiumStudios
      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому +1

      When you go to upload your design the uploader tool highlights what is required. Its mostly texture files of your design. In various formats like VTF, TGA, etc and a TXT file which is generated by the CS workbench this contains information about the settings used in the workbench, for example, phong intensity, wear settings, etc.

    Really nice video! Learned alot from it! Just one question. Always when i import my skins to the workshop they have like this odd white light over them and it looks amateurish. I see alot of the big skin creators dont get this problem and their skins look more profesional. Is there a setting in the workbench or is it the artwork that is probably the issue? Thanks and keep making these videos :)

      Sorry, I have never used GIMP but there are many many tutorials on it online, try watching some I am sure they will cover stuff like layers etc.

  • @alissangardner8600
    @alissangardner8600 8 років тому

    So I just got done with a skin about 2-3 hours ago... do you have problems with the UV map being projected pixelated? I made sure both image sizes were correct before hitting apply as well. Also another thing that helped me greatly when applying the texture is hollowing out the inside of the model first. I was having a lot of projection issues like triangles being punched through my uv map but after watching your OTHER video I figured I'd try hollowing out the model and it worked!
    Edit: [SOLVED]; For anyone having issues with the quality of your texture once it's on the 3D Model, at the very beginning when you're editing the alpha value be sure to put in the appropriate width and height, as well as checking the 32-bit. Did both of these and it's amazing how much difference that makes.

    • @CoridiumStudios
      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому

      +Alissan Gardner (Trinity) - yeah the texture size is of course very important. 32 bit in theory should not make a massive difference. Could effect gradients and stuff like that but tbh the difference in game should be very small as it will be compressed.

    Awesome, solid tutorial for Custom Paint jobs for Counter-Strike. But how do edit the alpha channel / UV mapping to make Anodized Airbrushed Style, Patina Style, Gunsmith Style... I know you can edit how the paint wears down, but how do you make certain parts metallic like ?? Your Decimator skin would be a great example :D

      Please have a look at the various conversations in the comments, i think this question has been asked before. Sadly, as I mention in the video, my knowledge of blender is very limited and I learnt/figured out what I needed to purely to try to help others without 3d coat or zbrush. I personally dont actually use blender.

  • @bepskekaatje424
    @bepskekaatje424 8 років тому

    I have used Blender alot, so I thought I'd clear up two things :)
    1: Lock camera to view= you move the camera when you move your view (when you are in camera mode) You can turn this off when you set up the right camera view. This way you dont have to care about messing with your camera view.
    2: for the step at 27:00 you need to make sure your material is selected, otherwise you will get a black and grey map.
    actually I didnt know about the photoshop texturing that you showed in this video, so I'm very glad you made it! Are you entering the new SI FI contest that valve launched last week btw? :)
    Take care!

      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому

      +Bepske Kaatje Thanks for the help! Great to have someone helping that knows Blender helping out!!!
      I really dont use it as I said in the video, basically figured out the stuff I needed to for this video having never used the program before. With regards to the lock camera to view, the thing I dont like about that either is that if you pan/zoom it moves the render region. I am not sure if this would cause issues with a projection but both with it locked and with it unlocked, it concerned me.
      What I was really looking for was a feature that would store a view. For example you position the viewport using any view (right, left, camera, etc) then you hit a store button then you can freely use the viewport when want to go back to the view you just hit the stored view button. Most other software seems to have this as standard (3d coat, zbrush, 3ds max, etc) but I could not find it in blender. I did find a plugin for blender that did it but did not want to add the extra steps of downloading and installing plugins to the video. (this is a video of the plugin I mentioned vimeo.com/23716437)
      Thanks again for the help.

      +Coridium Studios to go to different view modes you can use the Num Pad...
      7 - top view
      1 - front view
      3 - side view
      5 - perspective/orthographic view

    • @bepskekaatje424
      @bepskekaatje424 8 років тому

      Coridium Studios I understand what you mean, but Blender works a bit different than other 3D programs I think. If you don't lock the camera to view (in this case view=viewport but I believe you already know that) the camera will work the same as a normal object. You can only move it when you select it and press "g" to move it around.
      When you are using this texture method, blender is using the camera view to export, not your viewport. Because of this you will NOT have to worry about it fucking up because you have a different viewport.
      Knowing this I think it is easier to use your numpad (click "view" next too "object mode" to see the shortcuts) to change your viewport. That is how I always work and you just get used to it besically :p
      Another way to do it is to animate the camera. Place it at all the positions you want to have saved, and then just use the timeline to get to the different postitions. Ofcourse this is a slow process so I'm glad you were able to find a plugin for that ;D
      Hope this helps you out in some way!

    Ok so I have a question.
    When you're making the design in PS, you are only able to edit the sides of the weapon since it's a 2D model. If you want to edit the top/bottom of the weapon, do you have to do that in Blender or is there a way to do it in PS?

    • @CoridiumStudios
      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому +1

      +Emil Kajsjö As I mentioned in the video I dont actually use blender, I figured out this process to try to offer people a alternate option to 3d coat/zbrush/etc. but in theory the process I use in 3d coat would be similar... it really depends on what I am trying to do, sometimes I will do more projections from top/front/etc (if you do this I would recommend saving your file and texture first as this will allow you to blend the two projections using the before and after textures) other option is to paint it in blender using the painting tools (as mentioned in the video) and the last option is to edit the flat 2d texture. As I said i often used a mixture of these depending on the situation.

    Thank U for your tutorials, you really helped me a lot!!! I am actually in the middle of making my first skin ever... :) BUT: There is one thing that really important, but you never talked about it in your videos: You explain how to make skins from sideview, but sometimes other parts of the weapon like the TOP or the BOTTOM should be edited too... specially at some tricky skins the top of the weapon becomes ugly looking.... So how do you fix/edit/draw those parts after you done with the side painting? Or this kind of painting is not a good way if I want to draw on other different parts wich can't be edited from side view? And another thing... How do I edit protruding part of the weapons? Because from sideview it cant be edited separately... I know these are not easy things, but a quick video about this would be very helpful... (or painful? :)

    • @CoridiumStudios
      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому

      This can be done in many ways none of them are particularly easy and require a bit of effort. One way is to try to do it on the flat texture (this depends on the UV layout and each gun is different) Other option is to do a bunch of projections from different views. (if you do this be sure to save your texture before each additional projection as you will need to bland the various views together in a program like PS. Last option is to do the fixes directly inside blender/3d coat/zbrush using its 3d painting tools.

    Hey Coridium, Im using blender and substance painter to make textures. Going to make a tutorial about it and maybe it can help you. Im using Cycles to render the textures and I can use the nodes to make them procedurally as well

      +Victor Hugo Borges Thanks for the message, always interested to see new stuff/processes but I dont actually use blender I purely installed and figured this out for this video to try to give people free alternative to program to the likes of 3d coat. I use mainly use PS, Zbrush, 3ds max, 3d coat and substance painter, depending on the "thing" I am trying to create. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Very nice tutorial. I just have one question: do I need to worry about texture padding in Blender? I saw your tutorial about 3D Coat and ZBrush and there was an option to set the texture padding. Thanks in advance.

    • @CoridiumStudios
      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому

      +BUCK3T - Padding is important, sadly I forgot to mention that in the video. (to many things to remember ;-) ) but by default blender had a bit of padding so that helps but increasing it is a good idea.

      +Coridium Studios Thanks for the answer.
      While working with Blender I have found that before exporting to Photoshop the Lamp should be hidden in Blender (by clicking the eye icon near the Lamp in the Outliner). The lighting on the weapon doesn't change. If the lamp isn't hidden, the projection will have a vertical line from the lamp object to the ground (i.e. the lighting layer will have a transparent line through the weapon).

    • @CoridiumStudios
      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому

      Yeah, this is a good point, but at least the line has no effect on the projection as you need to remove the lighting layer before projection or you will bake the lighting into the texture.

      +Сергей Дорошенко its called zbrush, its mainly used for sculpting 3d models, its a excellent program for doing detailed organic models.

    • @iSGotti
      @iSGotti 8 років тому

      +Coridium Studios btw, it would be nice if you show me "how to" spread out the whole model into separate parts... the main thing why i can't do it by myself cause i am not native English speaker =/ and Zbrush slang is too heavy for me, there's no tolerance localisation to my language (i was sent you a friend invite via Steam @Neutrino, add me if you like)

    • @CoridiumStudios
      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому

      Why do you want to spread the model out into different parts, that is not required, I only showed this in the video to explain what a texture map was and how it worked.

    • @iSGotti
      @iSGotti 8 років тому

      Sometimes you need more detailed skin design, and textures are laying one over one. I already found out how to spread out the model, but, as for me, the way of UV-painting is much easier and faster

  • @mustafaansarie
    @mustafaansarie 8 років тому

    so it means that you can desgin and texture without uv
    i mean, the way i texture is, i open my model and create uv , once uv's are done, i open my uv in photoshop and apply texture, ofcourse my uv's are perfect and i know all the parts , once texture is done i then apply it to the model
    the way you did confused me, can you explain it,,, do u mean you can texture first then uv? or it only happens if the uv is already done? like the csgo files which are already uv ( btw for csgo i did the same thing, i downloaded the uvs and object files, and i opened the uvs and textured it
    i dont know if the way you do helps to do complicated design and textures plus, all you are doing is texturing on top of a 3d model and not on top of a uv
    abit confused, i hope to get a reply
    than kyou
    i use maya for my models

    • @CoridiumStudios
      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому

      This process only works if your model already has UV like the CS GO weapon models. What the process does is it projects the side view design on to the 3d model, the projection assigns the various colours, etc to the texture map and therefore onto the corresponding UVs. Basically it removes (for the most part) the need to design on a flat texture and allows you to design on a 3d model. The end result is the same you end up with a texture that corresponds to your UV layout.

    • @mustafaansarie
      @mustafaansarie 8 років тому

      thank you
      do you know if we can apply texture on a 3d model directly like blender
      i mean i use maya all the time and i apply texture using uvs which sometimes is confusing for complicated design textures

    Hey Coridium, can you make a small tutorial by using Substance painter?

    • @CoridiumStudios
      @CoridiumStudios  8 років тому

      +ArT3D7 I only have substance painter 1 and have never used it for creating skins, only used it for personal 3D projects. I know that creating skins in substance would be totally possible but I think most of it would need to be painted inside substance rather and exporting to PS, etc. TBH that is not a bad thing as it save jumping from program to program but in substance painter 1 there is no orthographic views which when designing can cause some issues as lines dont always line up as nicely as they do when things are without perspective. As I said its totally possible but not sure when I might get time to do that.

    • @ArT3D7
      @ArT3D7 8 років тому

      ah.. ok I tried making some AK skin but as you may know Substance is more Normal map focused software.... it's sort of tough doing without normal map... and yea the points you mentioned too.... but I like the easy texturing techniques in that.

    • @WaddleQwacker
      @WaddleQwacker 7 років тому +10

      Free software are not bullshit.
      It's just that you can not properly use an advanced tool without knowing a minimum of things. And with Blender, we are not talking about a text editor or an MS Paint, but a digital 3D software that allows to do everything up to a professional production level. Don't blame the "free softwares" for something that is only up to you.
      And, just to "help" you, i don't know if you speak about the painting tools or the texture file, so i'll speak about both :
      You need to load your texture in the UV/Image editor to see it. As you need to tell your picture viewer program wich file you want to see.
      By default, the UV/Image editor may load the "Render Result" because it's the most comonly excpected thing by most of the users opening that window : see what they are rendering.
      If you were speaking about the color wheel and painting tolls stuff, make sure you set the UV/Image editor frow View mode to Paint mode via the drop down menu at the bottom center, then open the tool bar (T) and go in the tools section.
