This is basically what we used to do in the '80s: sit around listening to records looking at the record jacket, talk about which songs we liked. I'd sometimes lie down on the carpet in front of our stereo cabinet with my head between the speakers for the ultimate immersion. Maybe it was '70s or '80s rock and roll, maybe it was classical or ragtime... 👍
Indeedy. The very nature of buying a record and taking it home to listen with friends like that or going to a movie theatre to watch a film made it all a big event and made you really take in whatever it was. The very nature of the industries also, despite always having difficulties with dodgy business practices etc, naturally allowed real passionate artists to be able to work for their art to be sold and the industries had to rely on artists to lead the way. Now, the industries, with all this software tech now, are able to 100% dominate everything and dictate to the last details what gets made at all, let alone is allowed to be sold on the mass market. Furthermore, the industries now are also able to censor everything else they don't want competing with their corporate oontent market, so far far more than ever before in history, real art and creativity and originality is being blocked.
Yeah... there were fewer records available (in my cohort at least) and so you gave everything at least a few listens... picking up the needle was inconvenient enough to stop you skipping a track too! Everything got a better chance.
@wecan Well.... yes and no. Many albums were not exactly totally full of great songs as many had some (or a lot of) filler tracks that weren't all that great or maybe just not quite to the listener's taste. Not every album was like Dark Side of the Moon in which every track was great and they all fit together amazingly. On the other hand some albums do contain a deep track treasure or two that weren't a big hit that you would only find by listening through the entire album. Also you don't necessarily need a vinyl album to sit down and give your full attention to recorded music. Regardless of format type I usually still prefer to actively listen rather than have music be a background thing.
The simple act of actually paying full attention to something, and when everyone is doing that by the very nature of the media forms, it forces industries to allow real artistic creatives to lead the way. When you have the internet and endless and instant "next, next, next - more, more more!" streaming on demand, and all this software to just rapidly and easily create anything without even having to out much care, attention, art or thought into it at all, you end up with corporations 100% controlling the industries and dictating what can be made and sold down to the smallest details. As a writer, I have seen this happen big time in the writing industry - productions and companies now fully dictate everything you do, how you do it, what content has to be in it and so on - which always always always leads to vapid, artless gumpf appealing to data and algorithms, and internet data naturally dictates that the only stuff that will ever sell well is stuff that's already been done...because algortihms have zero concept of originality and what could be made that's really fresh and original. This is what is happening now and it seems most people just instantly leap to the defense of this corporate technocracy and try to shush you every time.
@@7171jay I don't think they were referring to specific albums, just the very nature in general of having to buy a physical album, take it home and listen to it, often with friends as they wouldn't all be able to buy all the same stuff, naturally made people sit down and pay more full attention to whatever it was. This is always beneficial, and the very nature of the industry meant companies had to allow real artists and originality lead the way. Now, internet data and software allows companies to fully control everything made, they can crank out whatever at the clicks of button using software templates and data which naturally can only ever dictate that the only things that will sell best are things that have already been done. I think there is a huge difference and the effects on society and how people consume media with flash-in-the-pan lack of attention and increasing lack of caring about both real originality and deeper subtleties that may be crafted into certain albums or movies or whatever else, are already becoming obvious.
In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself!
Lee & Pete have completed the circle here. Playing guitar is not about shredding in a quiet corner. Here the vendor and the player join with the inspiration. This is why our various generations love guitars and guitar music. We all want to be a part of it. Thank you both for being so inspiring.
This is the best series you guys have done yet - love the news, and I love Fore! The story about “I want a new drug” and the ghostbusters theme song is fun too - Huey always stuck it to the man!
Great taste in music guys! My cover band had the privilege to open for Huey Lewis and News when he came to Little Rock years ago…such a fun night and what a great band. Chris Hayes is a fantastic guitar player.
.'..one of the greatest frontmen..'? seriously? I mean, seriously? Of all the boys and girls who have belted it out, old dusty-breath is one of the greatest?
Very underated band. Absolutely fantastic live.I'm more of a hard rock/metal guy and have seen a ton of gigs in my 57 years on this planet.HL&TN live are one of the best I've seen. Loving this series.
This is absolutely one of the best albums to ever come out. HL&tN were incredible musicians and singers but also great songwriters and arrangers. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform live - sadly, only once - and it was an incredible experience. No backing tracks or MIDI, which Huey make a point of mentioning, no auto-tune either, of course... and it was amazing. As silly as it seems to say a band this popular is underrated, it is absolutely true. They don't get nearly the credit they deserve nor are they held up as one of the best when they clearly were. Nothing in popular music that comes out today even comes close to being as musical, as varied and as interesting as the best of the 80s.
"Hip to Be Square" was the very first tune I plunked out on my first electric guitar. Now I get to play & sing it in my cover bands I was actually listening to this album a few days ago. Got to the end and "Simple As That." As a kid, I thought was a goofy little tune and didn't think much about it. 35+ years later, it hits a lot harder...
The wild thing is that Huey Lewis somehow sounds completely 80’s but not at the same time. Even today there is literally nobody you are ever going to mistake for him both sonically The News as a band or Huey’s voice.
They were coming from a different place than most 80s acts... their roots were in R&B/Motown/Stax/Volt, etc. They certainly integrated some of the new wave style, but that was never the core of their sound.
Such a great album and great band!!! Got tickets from a friend and saw them live in Stockholm in 1988 supporting the album after this and though being more into hard rock i was completely blown away! The songs, the lyrics, the showmanship, the sound! Saw a recent interview and he's putting up a musical in New York based on their songs. Love these episodes, thank you!
This series brings so much out of you two guys, that I never expected. I am amazed, even so I am 67 years old. Still I see the same passion for good music. Great album choices so far.
Whenever I listen to this album, or these tracks, I feel the exact same way as Pete here 😂 Such joy in the music, craftsmanship, and that solo in Doin' It.... Pete was so right to not let Lee progress into the next song! That solo is just so good and tasteful, love it 😍
I’m a big Huey Lewis & the News fan. Got a book with guitar tab of all their stuff. (Before Fore!, but it did have Power of Love.) I was really impressed when I saw them live at a 4th of July festival. They only had the sax player, but Huey filled out the horn parts on harmonica.
Saw Huey Lewis and the News at the SECC in Glasgow in the 80’s where they did The Forest from the Trees aCapella …..superb. It was the first time they’d played Glasgow and he was blown away with the audience. They played all there songs and ran out of things to play. He sat on the edge of the stage in disbelief of the reception and ended up playing the Power of Love twice. The guitarist had ramps at each side of the stage that they ran up and down whilst playing solos…..fantastic concert. Pity he can’t sing any more because of his hearing.
Man,i live in Argentina and i'm 50. 5 days ago i went to walk the dog and put this whole album in My headphones and remember all the lyrics and was like showing this to a friend who didnt know the album, but i just highlight the (fabulous) guitar parts, that were A LOT,and the huey's voice and the backing vocal melodies... Great record and i can't believe You guys playing it entire ❤😂
Fore and Sports were BOTH huge albums for me. I could listen to those two albums for the rest of my life and never get tired of them. Huey Lewis & The News made music so much fun. Edit: I watched every second and I've been an avid watcher of the channel for many years... Core audience is here ;)
You two are such a pair of quintessential "dad men"! Utterly shameless, its brill! I wonder if you ever listened to Judie Tzuke? I think it was "I am The Phoenix" its certainly just your thing i reckon. I remember my folks hammering it when i was a kid in the 80s. I bought my dad Eliminator for his birthday too just so i could listen to it. What a great time it was!
I’m partial to Sports, but this is a great one too. And I definitely put the guitarist in this band in category with Scott like you guys did. Enjoying this series, guys!
Been a big Anderton's channel fan for a good long while, but this has to be my favorite series of videos. Always fun to nerd out about albums with friends.
I Really enjoyed Pete Not playing his guitar, I really love his playing. But seeing the joy that he got from revisiting the "Early" years of those who inspired him was Great. 🇨🇦
I recommend that EVERYONE watch the new "Greatest Night In Pop" documentary about Lionel Rithchie, Michael Jackson & Quincy Jones producing the iconic 'We Are The World' song. It's just amazing to see musicians like Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Springsteen, Dylan, Stevie Wonder, etc. all together in the same room making the original recording! Then I try to think of what artists would be involved if they tried that today, and it makes me sad...
Absolutely love this video series! Huey Lewis and The News is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. Chris Hayes came from a jazz background…Huey had to teach him a bunch of cliche rock guitar poses and get him to shave off his moustache! His tone, solos and BV’s are the quintessence of the band’s sound! Thanks Lee and Pete!❤️
Huey Lewis and The News played at a 500 person capacity night club in #1 Party Schoo townl (according to Playboy Magazine).in the early-mid 80's in Chico California. My background was from a hard rock band guitarist...on my way to alt-punk originals...,,but the stellar musicianship of Huey and crew was quite impressive !
You guys kick ALL the ass for doing this. This album was such a huge part of my adolescence. It was so fun going through it again with you guys. Thanks guys.
I watched this video immediately before my guitar lesson, so I offered up Hip To Be Square to my teacher as a tune to work on. It really made today’s lesson super fun for me and my teacher. This record hit when I was a young adult but I wasn’t playing guitar back then. Thanks so much for covering this! Can’t wait for the next one 🎸
From what I see here - the way you guys approach these listening sessions - I believe that the REO Speedwagon album "High Infidelity" would fit perfectly. Love these videos. I miss sitting around with friends listening to some new vinyl. I tried starting up my own listening club, not long ago, and I was the only guy who showed up :(
Howdy from Texas. Y’all should do Boston’s debut album. I was born in ‘77. Was all over the radio when I was a wee lad. Blows my mind every time I revisit it. So great.
That was the first album I bought on cassette from that mail order shop called Britannia where you got 5 cassettes for some set price back in the 80s I remember getting this Born in the USA, Tina Turner and Queen Greatest hits 1 cant remember the 5th
Love this series - sitting down on a saturday morning with a nice coffee, hanging out with Lee and Pete, listening to some incredible music, very much a healing experience
Fun episode again. A little surprised this album was chosen over Sports, which I would pick as the truly classic Huey Lewis & the News album, but to each their own.
I love this whole series you’re doing of these, it’s revisiting the music of my childhood… going to have to buy these albums again as have nothing to play my ancient cassettes on anymore !
Really thought I was the only one still listening to the whole "Sports" album. Heart and Soul, Walkin on a Thin Line, Sometimes Bad is Bad. Great stuff!
Thanks for bringing back these great albums. Fore is an album I listened to for weeks and Johnny Colla’s saxophone playing made me start playing saxophone.
Love this series! Makes me want to buy a record player and start amassing vinyl! If you havnt done it yet, please please please do a steely dan album!!!!
This is the greatest series that you guys have ever come up with and I look forward to much more. I was born in 81 but I damn sure remember all of this stuff, it's the soundtrack of my childhood.
Greetings from Italy 👋This series is great! I would have never discovered how great Bryan Adams Reckless album was! All the songs are fantastic and this is great too. The lyrics on "Doing It All for My Baby" are so wholesome i LOVE it! edit "Forest for the Trees" really hits home for me wow. Even tho I'm not a family man "Simple as That" is so touching. There's so much positivity in this album, the musicianship is sublime, I really needed this. Thanks again Lee and Pete for making this!
Ahh guys thanks for the great memories, great time, couldn't wait to get this album when it came out, great film songs too. Made me think of old friends and when me and my sister were a bit younger lol
Its getting serious now and bringing back some of the best years of my life literally! Huey and the News heck yeah! Long live the 80's! And connected to one of the greatest movies ever! Back to the Future!
Wow I didn't know this album and this band...this video made me smile seeing Pete so happy..good idea to this kind of videos and discorver old but new music 🎉❤

Hey, Paul!
I scrolled the whole comments section for this exact quote!! The Huey Lewis and Weird Al parody of this scene is to die for.

Huey Lewis and the News were one of my fav bands in the 80's. Not until now did I realise how great musically they were.
I can’t imagine listening to this and not being enamored at the musicianship and production back then. They don’t make songs like this anymore.
The all of Huey Lewis and The News was a staple of the early 80’s music scene. Starting with “Do you believe in love”.
Great selection gents!
Love Huey and the News and this album! Great memories of my teen years and guitar dreams! Totally the guitar sound in my head

The music of my youth... thanks ! A couple of the tunes are so much from my 1st wedding party.
I love this new Andertons feature. Even with your limited music understanding :) ;) :)
Huey Lewis was the harmonica player in Thin Lizzy.
I saw them on the tour for this album, and yes, the vocal harmonies were mind-blowing live. One of the best concerts I saw in the '80's.

Really thought I was the only one still listening to the whole "Sports" album. Heart and Soul, Walkin on a Thin Line, Sometimes Bad is Bad. Great stuff!
You’re not alone brother (or sister!). Love Sports. As you say Heart and Soul, Walking on a thin line, Want a new drug. Not so sure about bad is bad!😂
Sports is the album I'd have chosen.

I was born in 1983, so these albums are a little before my time. This is an education for me and I'm loving it!
Greetings from Italy 👋This series is great! I would have never discovered how great Bryan Adams Reckless album was! All the songs are fantastic and this is great too. The lyrics on "Doing It All for My Baby" are so wholesome i LOVE it!

"Forest for the Trees" really hits home for me wow. Even tho I'm not a family man "Simple as That" is so touching. There's so much positivity in this album, the musicianship is sublime, I really needed this. Thanks again Lee and Pete for making this!
I love this new concept. Two boomers freaking out on awesome albums. Even though I'm a bit younger, these are tunes I grew up musically.
Gen X thank you young dude!😅
Ahh guys thanks for the great memories, great time, couldn't wait to get this album when it came out, great film songs too. Made me think of old friends and when me and my sister were a bit younger lol
