Are your Tie Bars bent?

  • Which tie bars and which bushings are best has been hotly debated. Of course, it depends on what you need them to do. The poly bush and rubber bush combination has served us so well that it's almost the only way we install them. Note that two rubber bushes are also good and might be more friendly on the subframe ears (where the tie bars mount to). Two poly bushes are NOT recommended because they will resist normal suspension movement and put some of those forces on the subframe ear.

Where do you get these kits from?

They can also end up bent by a tow truck operator who decides to strap your car using them... Luckily that was before I swapped them to the adjustable type

Thanks for vid. How do you correctly torque front tie bar bush nut? No room for torque wrench. I tightened nut until the bush expanded outside the domed washer. But nut wasn’t that tight.is this too far?

If the bush is rubber then you shouldn't tighten it so much that it expands past the washer. You can tighten by feel. Remember to use a lockwasher or a nyloc nut!

I've just got the bars but where did you get those bushings?

Most if not all suppliers should have them. These ones are from Mini Spares.

AFAIK the front bushing stops aft movement the rear bushing stops forward movement, braking loads are higher so the poly bush limits deflection and unpredictable handling under brakes, the rubber aft bush allows better absorption for NVH, loads under acceleration aren't as high and deflection matters less under acceleration. After reading a bit more it is not recommended to put hard bushes on both sides as it can lead to failure.

I couldn't remember where I read it but it's talked about a bit at the end of this article by Keith Calver.

Arrin Daley you’re absolutely right, as you brake your car tries to overrun the arm and the poly bush stops it from moving aft, all the while the rubber bushing allowing up and down movement and preventing the arm from moving forward during acceleration. I agree it is not advisable to put poly on both sides, I have seen poly bushings dry weep and oblong when used improperly. Polyurethane can be great but only when used in the correct application 👍
