  • This video will show you how a classic mini axle gets disassembled and reassembled. It's for the newer type of axle with inner and outer CV joints (not the type with U-bolts).

    I am rebuilding a 1991 Mini 998 which has been sadly neglected by previous owners. These videos from Steveston are my 'go to' reference for many of the jobs as I move through the complete (and I mean complete) disassembly of the car. Well done Philip and the rest of the team at SMCO - this videos are awesome, entertaining, informative and well made!

    This is a killer video! I'm in need of replacing both boots so this is extremely helpful.
    Carb tuning would be awesome too

    Can't believe how easy it was to hammer that off, one we're doing won't budge at all.

    Excellent video, thanks for this. I'm about to do the drive shafts on my Cooper S restoration. Mine's an old 1969 car and pre dates the inner pot joints. It has Hardy Spicer universal joints instead (standard cars had very basic rubber joints). The subframes were designed back in those days and the joints were small enough to easily fit through the holes in the subframe. I guess they didn't bother re-jigging the subframes to make the holes bigger for the later pot joints.

    Was doing this today on my 62 super and my CV did not go on that easy😂. The circlip you need to slide the CV over is evil.

    This is perfect timing! I heard plenty of clicking when making sharper turns on my way home today and it seems I'm in need of replacing my CVs. Is there any way to tell which CV is going bad (inner vs outer)? I'd like to order the parts I need before I take it apart. Not much room for loose parts where I'm at currently.

    Necer hit the cv joint without the nut, the end is really easy to damage due to the big hole for the split pin ! Miniolic

    The subby hole's too small because they had rubber cruciforms or Hardy Spicer joints when it was designed.
    It's best to keep the joint components matched as they wear together - as you would pistons in an engine block.

    Maybe a good time to do a video about the seal from axle to the engine. (Mine is leaking :-) )

    Awesome! Wondering if you have seen, or if MiniSpares has an axle rebuild 'kit' that can just be purchased with everything. Sometimes it is a bit intimidating trying to find all the right parts and matching them to the right year of Mini. I have 10in wheels on my 1986, so would I just look for the bearing, pots, and boots that fit that in particular? Seems there is also a 'smaller type joint' parts. Is that for 10in wheel setup? Thanks for all the help!

    Great video as always… But I have a question for you around an issue I had a few months back with a full restomod. Have you ever seen in your experience the exterior or the outer CV pulling away from the axle because the cir clip was too thin? I had this happen to me on the road where the outer pulled away from the hub and left me stranded… Got it re-locked after some persuasion with a hammer and then saw the inner axle start to pull out a little bit so I can only surmise it might’ve been a cir clip for circlet that wasn’t properly engaged. Curious if you have seen this before?

      @thebluepOtatO
      I’ve seen that on other cars (classic mini are rare in the US) when the axles wear out or the rubber boots gets cut and all the grease is leaked out, ball bearings start to wear out and the outer swivel is no longer smooth, then it happens.
      Also when the vehicles are lowered or lifted and the angles are beyond the allowance, it could wear out components and cause that too 😎✌🏽

    Great video.what grease should i use on these joints?

    • @Stevestonmotorco
      @Stevestonmotorco  5 років тому

      We use moly lube. Moly lube for metal on metal, but wheel bearing grease for bearings.

  • @joshkeith9634

    Is it the end of the world if one of the pot joints is missing a ball bearing?

    • @Stevestonmotorco
      @Stevestonmotorco  4 роки тому +1

      It will probably wear out prematurely because the other bearings around the missing space will be loaded up

    just found you. I know cars. Minis are a bit different. Some what. Like for example. Air is punished through the radiator not pulled. Small thing.
