I personally need to keep my plants in nursery pots. I like clear ones. Then I stick it down in the pot. I takes the guess work out of watering. I take to the sink, water, put back in the pot. I can see how dry my soil is and how the roots look. I can also switch out what plants between pots without disturbing the roots. Pots that have no holes are ‘cover pots’ and intend to have a nursery pot inside. I’m super impressed how well and healthy you keep your plants with so many and so many different needs! I’ve had plants about 4yrs and have about 200 in my collection so I try to keep it stupid simple! 🌱
I love the patina on terracotta. I find ALL mine at thrift stores. I've gone from an overwaterer to an underwaterer tho! My plants are confused😂 I've also spray painted regular ceramic pots in terracotta color for visual appeal and unity. It's so fun, must use clear coat though.
Do you think we tend to over water in the beginning when we’re too excited? Then when we’ve settled down we under water?
I find the difference in taste so fascinating - I HATE the patina that develops and is the reason I dont use terra cotta 😂😂
Terracotta is such a timeless style!
To avoid damaging furniture and sills, I use saucers with all my planters. Under the saucer I attach adhesive felt pads so there's a barrier between the scratchy surface and the furniture (the felt pads are usually used to put under chair legs to protect floors). All my furniture and sills look brand new!
I paint a glaze on the insides of a few of my terracotta saucers! I just use those if there's a plant I want to showcase on some nice furniture🙃
Hi....very interesting topic. It's the first time I've seen this issue discussed. Thanks!🇨🇦
I love love LOVE this video. Not enough people talk about the fact that you really need to pot plants into a vessel that works for both the plant and the person! Great video per usual Harley!
What type of pots do you got going on?
You have some very beautiful combos Harli ,
Love the tall terracotta ✨
💚🌿🌵🍀💚
This has been an interesting video. You’ve given me something’s to think about. I’ve never thought of Pinterest as anything more than a recipe storing place. I’ll have to look at plant styling there.
Hi that’s a good inf. I learned from you to water my plants by filling a plastic bin of water and putting my pot in approximately 10 to 15 minutes. It really works well for me. Thank you
I love the terracota patina now- I'm all for character and finding rando objects to become planters. Also, I save plastic lids to use as saucers under plants. Helps with the whole ruining furniture. =)
The patina is gives it the “living” vibe
Your philo Jose is so impressive especially since you don’t have it growing up a pole/support. I appreciate seeing climbing aroids that still grow well without having a big ugly pole haha
I also agree about brand new terracotta looking ugly but loving patina!
I am too busy to plant directly into terracotta now but I use them as cover pots, because they are my favorite aesthetic.
Ah. The classic “Byyyyee!” Love it. An oldie but a goodie. Amazing video. Once again, I am in awe of you. 🤗
patina forever!!!
Literally the only plant you tuber I watch ❤🎉
Nice video. I don't like to water so much with so many that I have. So for the most part I seal terracotta with 2 or 3 coats of clear gloss Rust-Oleum unless it's for cactus or succulents. I also drill drainage holes in pottery and ceramic. I use diamond drill bits, on my third one as I have done probably over 50 pots, none broke. Very satisfying.
Oh Harli I do agree with what you said about certain pots for our plants. Sometimes when I leave my plants in the nursery pots they come in the plant does not do so great and when potted up into a pot with a drainage hole that sometimes cause problems also I guess we all just have to figure out what pot works the best for us and our plants. Thanks so much for sharing this great video, I hope you have a beautiful and blessed day, sending love and hugs, bye!!🤗💝💜💜💜
How long do you leave them in the plastic pot?
My micans is in a similar situation - this video is lighting a fire under my butt to finally fix it!
Love this video. I use the nursery planter inside a cover pot method most often. 🌿🌱
Great topic! I use acrylic paint on my terra-cotta planters to give them a more modern look, and since I don't seal them, they remain porous. This method has been working well for me so far.
I went ahead and put a clear coat on some of mine
@@PhotoRam405 what do you use to cost the terracota??
@@PhotoRam405 but that makes it not porous anymore, doesn’t it?
This is a great, informative video, Harli! I’m an overwaterer and I do like patina and a more natural look so I have mostly terra cotta. ❤
I use to be a terracotta girlie. Love terracotta. But life has changed and now I’m an under waterer so I’m currently changing the pots I used. It makes a difference.
Great video! Thanks for explaining all the types in detail 💚
Am constantly changing my mind about planters. It’s a delicate balance between substrate and planter material and watering style for me. It all changes for me. I try to just check once a week. It’s unlikely anything will be on its last legs within a week. That said, I no longer grow maidenhair ferns. They don’t forgive! Found some cool shapes in terracotta in the form of ollas at a garden centre. A bit cheaper than buying designed terracotta planters. Nothing quite like the look of a patina-ed terracotta planter though IMO. Something soothing about the look and especially great with architectural looking plants like cacti.
Love all your videos. This one was so helpful! I have the conversation all the time and you helped me put it into simpler terms 😊
Is that a raphidophora decursiva at 25:58? I’d love to see a plant care/styling recommendation video on that! I bought the plant recently and didn’t find a lot of good content to watch about it. Mine is crawling to the side out of the pot and very top heavy. I’ve been looking for a heavy planter to keep it in
I'm learning to love terracotta patina. It's taking time...
Yes the planter combination is very important I personally prefer clear nursery pot with a cover pot though they can be expensive but I do enjoy thifting them. I have experimented with some no drainage as I am more experienced now and seems to be going on x
Another downside of non porous pots and their ability to hold moisture longer is the increased prevalence of fungus gnats. You have to make sure to let the top 1-2 inches of the soil dry out.
So many choices in planters 🧐🇨🇦
Good morning!!
More videos like this❤I love patina on my Terra Cotta. Great video Harli
Thank you for your continued efforts
I prefer grey or white planters but love the cost and eco friendly nature of terra cotta, so I intend to buy the modern-shaped clay pots and paint them in paints I have already for my house trim.
I was going to ask you about the combo of terracotta and Micans but then you showed us yours haha! They do look super good with terracotta though, but mine has been drying extremely fast too, even in Thailand. I'll have to repot them now.
Omggg girl where is the planter that you have your aloe in from? OBSESSED 😍
I cut the bottoms of a plastic up that we get for example from McDonald's and use that as saucer. Qnd i use yogurt containers as pots and then just look for a nicer pot to cover it. Recycle as much as possible. I'm using a coomie jar for my micans. 😊
I would put that Peace Lily in a plastic nursery pot and slide it into the terra-cotta!
I prefer the used/old look of terracotta as well…but some of the unsealed stuff can grow actual mold that we don’t need inside our homes (for sensitive people, like me ☹️).
I went ahead and glazed the inside of my terracota plant
i am quite frustrated with very small terracotta pots, because i love the look of the small ones, but they dry out sooo quickly. I recently moved my small cacti and succulents into them, hope that works better
I think your Jose buono needs a poke or stake to stay upright.
Why is your Patina brown? Mine is a beautiful green.
💚💚
I think all trees cotta are ugly so that’s a big con for me. I prefer ceramic but I can’t afford to buy for all my plants. So I buy all plastic white plants.
What plant did u have with the fern in the glass vase
It’s a mystery anthurium & I have no idea what it is
@@HarliG I love it Now u have me on a rabbit hole search lol

The milion dollar question here is when you are on holidays HOW can somebody else know how much to water each plant - especially the ones without a drainage hole...
