How far above the hook do you place the split shot?

I use split shots on my drop shot. Rigs if I can't find the solid round ones, I take my side cuts and cut the little wings off works great as a backup

I prefer to use the weights not have the little wings.

I have tried to use a weighless swimbait on a #2 wide gap hook and the bait rolls over in the water. Why would this be? I even tried it with a barrel swivel... any info you may have wold be appreciated

The knot and hook must be set right straight. Or use heavy duty hooks which is weigh heavier.
