It means either their fuel will be too low to perform the flight safely or the crew will go over their allowed working hours so the flight will be cancelled.
Crews have a maximum duty time that they must adhere to, otherwise they are not legal to fly. Usually around 16 hours in a given 24 hour period. This time normally starts on push back.
Air crews are only legally allowed to work a certain amount of time in a day/week/month/quarter/year etc. So likely the delay was so long that if they did the flight they would bust regulations by the time they landed and the company could be fined. See 14 CFR Part 121 crew rest requirements

It's pretty uncommon, I think, that you would clear somebody to land when there's arriving and departing traffic ahead. I think maybe that was the cofusion for him?
Most gates at Kennedy are in non movement areas so they don't control them. Plus companies move planes around all the time. It is probably easier to just ask since half the time the pilots don't even know yet
That's what I'm always wondering when I hear KJFK clips as well. This is a very curious unique feature that I haven't heard in any other airport. Sure, gates are the responsibility of the airport and moving areas are the responsibility of air traffic control, but still there usually is way better coordination. In EDDF for example (biggest airport in germany and second or third in europe) they sit on two adjacent floors of the tower, one litterally directly underneath the other.

So many controllers trying to be Kennedy Steve :)
You say that like it's a bad thing…
Being Kennedy I was surprised that the first controller could be understood and didn't have an attitude but they fixed that right away didn't they.
JB1901 ffs be professional! Yeah, yeah yeah... Okay?
Thinks the whole airport revolves around him.
It's pretty uncommon, I think, that you would clear somebody to land when there's arriving and departing traffic ahead. I think maybe that was the cofusion for him?
That’s a valid concern but a sarcastic “okayy” isn’t the way to respond. On ATC frequency, that means nothing.
@@andyhui01 For sure, I agree. That controller could totally have had a better attitude though, let's be honest.
I have so many questions where 22l and 22r all waiting to depart? #2 why so many at once?
What does crew time out mean
- Affirm
- only one runway open
- crew duty time exceeded
@@VASAviation i appreciate you responding
I’m Sporean so to have a Spore Airline plane in the line up there sounds cool to hear😉👌🏻
"Delta 117 you'll have to wait on 22R, I've just had a nervous breakdown."
@3:55 You mean there is a while other line on 22L?
As a student pilot who lives in the NYC area. The only good thing about training here is you get used to people talking fast over the radio
They really need to sort out how they clear things into gate, surely theres a better way for ATC to know other than asking the crew.
@@flyingdaytrader I know, My point it when say American are ready to receive an aircraft they send an electronic message to the controller which says "stand 123 enter via Zulu Zulul" and the controller does it, It would save a load of time and the sort of thing we would do at Heathrow if ATC didnt control everything.
@@QemeH Hi well alot of the big airport in the US have ramps that are controlled in some case by airlines, so not unique as such, just seems to be very antiquated with technology as it is now it really should be differcult for the to controlling freq to alk to eachother with text / ready messages,
@@QemeH I think Frankfurt is 4th or 5th ^^
Edit: it looks like it is 4th actually.
