- In my sad sewing room I made a Cargo Trouser Mash up using Simplicity 1377 & New Look 6644 plus another Kwik Sew Cardigan.
Huge apologies to Jen @TodayinJensSewingRoom but I didn't thank her for starting #fridaysews , my mind isn't quite with it this week!

Sending you lots of hugs Carole. Mickey was what you needed for so long and in time, I hope you will take on another one to fill that void. My grandma had a dog named Mickey - he was a silk terrier and passed away in his sleep at the age of 20! The collaboration sounds like fun. Love the cardigan and the pants do look so much better worn. I'm glad you got to sew your way through a tough week.
Oh thank you so much, that is so sweet of you. Now I feel our Mickey left us way too early! 20 years is a wonderful age for a dog to reach, that must have been incredibly hard for your Grandma.

So very sorry for your loss. It is very hard to lose a beloved fur baby. Thank you for your post…your makes are beautiful. The cardigan is very flattering - the colour, cut and fit. And the pants are trim and smart looking.

I’m glad you found comfort in sewing and the green trousers are fab. It’s very hard when our doggies have to cross the rainbow bridge and is by far (in my opinion) the hardest part. You can never really prepare for it. He will always be a special dog in your heart as he helped you overcome your fear of dogs. I have two retired racing greyhounds and although they are big dogs they are very calm and lazy (18 hours of sleep a day). If you come across someone walking a greyhound it’s good to give them a fuss (assuming they’re not too shy and are happy for you too). Big hugs.

Funny you should say about Greyhounds as I am always a little nervous of them as they are quite tall (me being short!). I will definitely take heed of what you say though and try to befriend them from now on. It is so lucky we quite often have to look after our daughter's dog, he is no Mickey but he is such a good dog! Hope you are having a good weekend and I really appreciate your comment 💗
I am so very sorry that you lost Mickey Carole 😢. Never easy losing a beloved pet 😢. I am sure that you and your family have given him nothing but love, during his time on this earth. Thank you for sharing him with us from time to time. He was adorable!! On a lighter note - Oh my gosh I love the sweater and those pants!!
Thank you so much Terri, Mickey was just the best dog ever but then we would say that wouldn't we! My elderly parents used to call him BDOTP, (Best dog on the planet)! He is very much missed by all our family but we are now beginning to talk and remember the fun and good times. He will be in my videos forever though won't he 🥰.

Thank you so much, we had no idea just how big a hole Mickey would leave in our lives. The whole family has felt it as both my kids lived at home when we got him and now they are both married with children of their own!

Oh I am so sorry to hear you lost your beloved pet on Monday too. I can't believe it will be a week tomorrow and I imagine you are feeling the same way. We had no idea just how much of a hole he would leave. Like us I imagine you have stuff all over your house that reminds you of her. They certainly do. I was determined not to fall in love with Mickey when we got him, look at me now, I can't stop tearing up when I think of him! Thanks for being so kind 💗
Carol, I’m so sorry for your loss. We also have had a dog in the past that we had to make a decision and it’s so heartbreaking and it truly is a family member. Sending love and prayers your way.
Thank you Pamela, it is an incredibly hard decision isn't it. Luckily both my daughter and husband were there so we shared the decision. He really was a family member as you say and years ago I wouldn't have believed that was possible! Thanks again for your kindness 💗

Oh Carol people who don’t have pets have no idea how heart breaking it is to lost them I have had to say goodbye to 2 dogs and even writing this the emotions are welling up 😢so I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of mickey ❤ and would you believe my sister and my daughter were terrified of dogs and my dogs taught them that not all dogs are viscous. So I’m glad sewing got you through the pain of the grief of losing him and the makes we’re lovely,I liked the colour of the cargo pants and I’m in the process of making a cardigan so it’s inspired me to get making it. Hi Sandra, I was one of those people who didn't understand when people got sad about losing a pet. Oh look at me now, I am still so full of emotion! It is almost like a very sad club isn't it where only members understand just how awful it is. He shared our lives for nearly 15 years, my kids were still at home when we got him, now they are married with children.

Your pink cardigan came out great, as usual. Those trousers look to be slinky comfy. They do look much better on. That little tee shirt that you’re wearing reminded me to tell you about the Sentosa top by Itch to Stitch, it has such a beautiful neckline that frames the face. The trousers are so much better on and came out exactly how I wanted, a good job too the way I was this week!! What are you doing to me with those indie patterns? That looks such a cute top. I'm so sorry to hear about Mickey. It's hard to lose a pet but remembering all the years of happiness he gave you will help a little, when you can bear to think and talk about him. I adopt older dogs so have lost a lot over the years and it never gets any easier. Take care x
Thank you very much Rona. We are now beginning to laugh and chat about all his antics over the years which is bringing back wonderful memories. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to adopt older dogs when you know their fate but it must be incredibly rewarding to think they had a loving home at the end. 💗

It is so hard to lose a fur baby no matter the age. Gone but not forgotten. They leave their footprints on our hearts. Not that it is my business but over our 48 years of marriage we have had 14 dogs and the best recovery for me was to get another puppy which helped heal my heart. I've done it both ways-not gotten another pet right away and those were harder for me to get over or get another pet pretty quickly which worked out better for me. When the coyote ate my King Charles in 2019 he was 12 and my heart was so broken ( We live in a suburban area and never dreamed we had to worry about coyotes). I lasted until just after Christmas(25 days) before I rescued 2 Labradors. such numb nuts but they are a joy to have now. But grief is its own entity isn't it? Hugs your way. I am nearly 6' and most of you Friday sews ladies are under 5'6" (I know Rachel at Stitched up is close to my height and I love her videos as well ) so it is interesting to see what sewing challenges you all have at your height! (I've sewn since I was 12 due to my height).

First of all my heart sunk when you said how many dogs you have had and yes, I know a lot of people get a another dog quite quickly after but the timing isn't right for us even if we wanted to. We do have 'access' to our children's dogs if ever we need a cuddle! I then went on to read about the coyote and I had to re read that several times as I just couldn't believe it. That is truly awful, I am so sorry.
It is fascinating you say about sewing vloggers heights as I feel that most vloggers are taller than me and very few of us are small. It is so much easier for us though as all we do it chop the length off most of the time! I think Rachael from the French Seams is also really tall if that helps. @@socarole66 Thanks for the heads up about Rachael at FrenchSeams. I am surprised that I don't see more tall girls vlogging/sewing because it is the only reason I learned how to sew. Most of the vloggers I watch seem to be between 5" and 5'8" except Stitched up! too funny. I'm glad you have access to some pets to cuddle. We have been blessed with all our doggies and we would have mostly 3 at a time except when my grown children were little, I felt I could only handle one at a time! I love your vlogs and your style. (And yes, it took a long time to wrap our head around Sparty being taken by the coyote.) We are 31 miles from downtown Chicago-and I am so on the page of a dead coyote is a good coyote. Since Sparty our village did make arrangements to whittle down the coyote population in our area that has gotten out of control as they are very bold going onto folks' porches and decks even some in thru doggie doors. THAT would be terrifying. So 24 have been removed- and I do mean killed. 🤷♀Still love your vlogs and am planning to make one of your favorite knit dresses (can't remember the number just now). WE will see how that works out! Take care!

Mickey was so special to us all, we had no idea how hard it would be and just kind of believed he would last forever 🥰. We have a lot of memories of him as you say and I don't think our house will ever be free of his hairs! Thanks for your support x

Thank you so much for your kind comment. That last photo of Mickey I took in the Winter and got it framed, it is in our Holiday home on the wall. We knew of course that Mickey wouldn't last forever so I wanted there before anything happened to him. He looked so wistful looking into the light, I just had to capture it.
I might end up filming down there in the Summer as we will be away for the week, lots of sewing stuff is there so as long as my hubby is out the way I can film!! Good luck with your knit fabric, it really did sew like a dream. 🧵😊

Oh Carole, I'm so sorry to hear about Mickey! I know how much love and companionship dogs bring to our families. He was blessed to have you all these years. I too was terrified of dogs growing up. Now that I've owned a few, I can be around them. I had a tough week with Zoey. She had a vestibular attack and Tom and I are feeding her with a syringe all week. Sewing is definitely a way to cope. It’s thanks to the lovely Adam that I found your channel about a month ago. I absolutely love your content and you have already inspired me to order a couple of patterns. I’d actually bought a dress for my daughter in Primark which I wanted to replicate, then you showed the New Look ‘magic’ dress which is practically identical! I also ordered the New look pattern for the trousers with the front pockets that you add waist ties to. Just waiting for fabric to arrive. I really am so sorry that you lost your little dog Mickey, pets really are members of the family. It’s heartbreaking when we have to say goodbye. I am a cat person, but I love all dogs. Every time I am out and about when I see a dog, I have to pet it (I always ask owners for permission), especially big ones ( I am more careful with tiny ones)

I love a cardigan and your pink one is so pretty. The pants are great and they fit you so well. I am happy to hear that sewing this week was comforting for you. It is so difficult to let our pets go and I know you will miss Mickey but it is great you have so many happy memories too. My granddaughters watch a cartoon from Australia called Bluey. The girls have picked up some new vocabulary from the show. Yesterday they were playing with the doll house and my granddaughter asked me where I put the caravan. It took me a minute but thanks to watching your channel I knew what she was talking about. ( we don't call them caravans in the U.S. we call them RV's or campers ) Enjoy your holiday.
Hi Carol, oh I know Bluey very well! It is a fabulous cartoon and the funny thing is there are so many tiktoks and videos out there from parents watching it and trying to be better parents like Blueys 😂. That is so funny that you knew what they were talking about because of our caravan. I always get confused with your vehicles as well 😂 I shouldn't really called our holiday home a Caravan, I am just in the habit of it after having a touring caravan for 35 years! Losing a pet is awful Carole, anyone who has had a much loved dog will be feeling your loss.
On a lighter topic, great trousers and cardigan. It's nice to find a pattern that you feel you can make over and over and not get tired of .

So sorry you have lost your dog. We have only had one but when he collapsed and died it was very difficult. Really unexpected grief. I love your cardigan and trousers.
Oh Ann that is so sad, I am so sorry. To be honest that is how we thought Mickey would go as he was so good even up to last Friday. He just very quickly deteriorated over the weekend. I do hope that you have found peace with that now, very gradually we are able to talk about Mickey and the funny memories we have of him. Thanks for watching 🧵😊

So sorry you lost your beloved pup. After we moved my mother in with us she asked about getting a dog, she hadn't had one since she lost her beloved dog 20 years earlier, and we agreed. We found one from a local shelter and though she wasn't quite what my mom was looking for they soon developed a bond and became inseparable. 2 years ago this month my mother passed away and now her dog has become my companion.

I am sorry about your loss of Mickey; it is never easy loosing a part of your family. Thank you for mentioning Violet May Handmade; I really enjoy their videos. Samantha and Caitlin both are wonderful seamstresses. My son, who is a is a connoisseur of cargo pockets, shared with me that it was best to put buttonholes on both sides of the flap. That enables you to slip things in and out of the pocket without unbuttoning them, yet those things stay more secure than in an open pocket. That is what I did on my second pants with cargo pockets, and it made a big difference in how much I use them. That said, I completely understand why you chose not to use flaps with the rayon twill. I suspect that your pants will be unbelievably comfortable though. I made a top of rayon twill and if feels like I'm wearing silk.

I read your comment over and over about the buttonholes each side and I just couldn't understand it until I asked my husband and he explained it to me 😂. Chris the new sewing expert! Your son is right, that would work so much better than one central button. I will definitely use that on my next pair of cargos in a sturdier fabric but to be honest with this pair, I won't put anything in the pocket anyway as the fabric is too soft. Our first little puppy was also named Mickey! And I was also a little nervous about having a dog, but the youngest daughter did the same act when her older siblings went away to college! And when he crossed over the rainbow bridge, my husband and I were both absolutely devastated when he passed! So sorry, Carole.

Mickey was kind of left with us when the children moved away and maybe that is why we are finding it so hard like you two did. Oh Mary, how can you do this over and over again. I know it must get easier over time but right now its hard! We have some amazing memories of him though, I think my daughter is finding it the hardest as Mickey was with her through the end of School, boyfriends, a wedding and pregnancies etc!

@@socarole66 I think if anything I’m a little more prepared because I’ve been through it-I think in the past 20+ years I’ve gone one year without a pet-after the last one I should not have gotten another dog but I was grieving so bad I wasn’t thinking straight- and that gave us Luke who is on more medication than me🤪But anyway I think I saw that video but I would love to see pictures ❤️❤️which part of Canada is it in? Aw so sorry for your loss. We went through loss a few years ago with our sweet Yorkie and know how you feel. I can say the pain gets a bit better with time❤.

So sad for you losing Mickey. We also lost our beloved Harvey on Saturday 27th April. I have a son living in the USA and I went over to visit him my 5yr old Grandson and my new Granddaughter who was born in January. I have not seen them for 4 yrs so was desperate to visit them. My husband stayed at home to look after Harvey an on leaving he was perfectly ok. However during my second week he became poorly of which I thought was just a sickness bug. My hubby took him to the Vet 3 times that week. Sadly he became worse and after an X-ray on the Saturday he was found to have Stomach Cancer. We made the very decision to have him put to sleep. I was still in the USA and not due home until the Monday but I could not leave him suffering. It has been a terrible week and coming home knowing I could not be here to say my Goodbyes has been awful. Like you I turned to my sewing and have just completed a Donny Shirt. Harvey was 13 yrs old and a Cocker Spaniel. We had amazing years with him and he was so loved. Big hugs to you and I hope your Mickey and our Harvey are running around and having the best time ❤️
Oh I am so sorry to read about your dog. That is just tragic and I honestly thought something similar would happen to our Mickey when we were away in Florida as we had to put him in kennels. At least your Hubby was there but I know that isn't much consolation to you and just awful timing.
I am glad that sewing has helped you through, what would we do without our hobbies eh? I can imagine our spaniels are very happy together, dashing around and splashing in the muddiest of heavenly puddles! Before I had my colors done, I made everything in summer colors, soft pinks, blues and greens. After I found out I was a winter and was told to wear blacks, whites, and jewel tone, they didn’t feel “right.” But, man, did I get the compliments! I think you are also a winter.
Thanks for your comment and for watching. I am indeed a Winter and I had my colours done back in the 80s. I was in my 20's then and was so upset I couldn't wear the colours I loved! I still hate the palette so I only wear the 'right' colours for me when it matters if you know what I mean. I have a very quiet lifestyle and don't really go anywhere or see people so it doesn't matter what I look like and if I am wearing a colour that I love, that's fine by me 🤣. My hubby is also colourblind so he is useless anyway! As a footnote to that. I always wear Winter colours when I see my Mother or she will comment 😂. Thanks again fellow Winter! ❤️🖤🤍💙

Hello, Carole, I’m so very sorry for your loss. How sweet your Mickey was and it just now dawned on me that your family loves Disney so much and named your sweet puppy Mickey, how appropriate! It’s never easy, it’s like the loss of a family member. I’ve put a piece of my sweet dog’s blanket up in my sewing room so that I can be reminded of her daily as I still miss her everyday. Hi Tiffany, Mickey was indeed named after the mouse! We knew right away that we wanted to name our doggie after a Disney character, so it was either that, Pluto or Goofy! So sorry to hear about your beloved dog, Mickey. We had to make a hard decision with our mini dachshund 3 1/2 years ago. I was working remotely and was missing having a dog with me that i had to get another one. Buddy has a different personality and we had to do a lot of training to get him to where he is now. I have since retired and we are inseparable.

My Son made us start watching Schitts Creek during Covid times and it really got us through! Last year we visited some of the filming locations in Canada which was so much fun. @@lynngates1662 we did indeed see the Garage, Apothecary, Town hall and we even found the exact spot for the proposal up on the hill. Of course we looked round the motel as well which is just an abandoned motel which I don't understand as it could be made into a great attraction, I would stay there. We did look through all the windows 🤣. X

Carole, hugs to you for comfort. Our pets steal our hearts and losing them is devastating. My husband and I have had indoor kitties for absolutely decades. All of them but one have lived many years before we had to have them put down due to health issues. Each time it broke my heart and I am tearing up as I type this just thinking about it. Right now, we only have 1 kitty: Stripes, who just celebrated her 20th birthday. She has stage 3 kidney disease, hypothyroidism, is very hard of hearing and has cataracts. She seems to be doing quite well with the meds she is on, and IV treatments 3 times a week. But I know our time with her is limited now. And yes, our hobbies, sewing in particular for us, can save us when we are very down. Your makes are lovely, and Carole, please get another pet, when you feel the time is right. There is nothing like a warm snuggly creature to cheer our hearts. ♥🥰♥
Oh Theresa, my heart goes out to you with Stripes. We had no idea how hard losing one pet would be let only a few like yourself. I knew Mickey's time was coming to an end but that didn't make it easier sadly. At one stage making those trousers my eyes were streaming and I was trying so hard not to get the fabric wet! We are lucky that my daughter lives a mile away and we quite often have to have their dog Reggie, he isn't like Mickey , there will never be another Mickey, but he is still adorable and like you say, nice to cuddle up to. When I was a teen my uncle got me a dog and it attacked me and I had my arm almost tore off. Anyways we years later when our daughter was little we got a cockerspaniel. We had to send her to obedience school as a puppy because I was terrified of dogs. I am still scared of dogs also. Our dog passed a few years ago. I totally understand how you feel. I wish I could get over my fears of dogs. It keeps me from going a lot of places.
Oh Pamela, what a horrendous story and I fully understand how you and anyone would be scared of dogs after that. The first thing I actually worried about when we lost Mickey last week was the fact my fear would come back, my daughter and son both have a dog so I am hoping that won't be the case. It is funny but when I walked with Mickey I didn't ever worry about dogs coming up to me as they would see him first, now I don't have that deterrent! I am so sorry to hear that you still have your fear and I understand that you may avoid places with dogs, I certainly used to. I keep a photo of our dog in front of my sewing table. He's been gone over 10 years and we still miss him. Hugs to you as you adjust to new routines now that your time doesn't circle around your fur friend. Simple sewing projects are perfect for a distraction without challenge while you get your head space back.

Yes I quite understand sewing helps, when the my husband passed away I found sewing helped me a lot, sometimes I had to stop as my eyes blurred, but it really did help me concentrate on something else for awhile. So we here in NZ will be seeing elastic in the bottom of our trousers next summer, I did like yours, and they did suit you, but alas I have a feeling that I will stick to my wide/ straight/ bootleg type my thin legs (those and my arms are the only part that is😂) don't look good with that style. But good to know what's coming, strange isn't it we're the first country to see the sun and day of the year, but alas behind you guys in the northern hemisphere for fashion 😮 love your vlogs as I have said before regards Diana from NZ 🎉❤🎉

Forgot to mention, somewhere on youtube I saw someone suggest to spray slippery fabric with starch to help keep it from sliding as you work with it. I haven't tried it since I haven't had the nerve to try to work with it, but I thought it might help with the next pair of trousers.
I have heard that too but can't remember who it was either. This twill sort of twists and turns and stretches when you sew, it is hard to describe but your trick would certainly have helped when cutting out! A couple of years ago I made a jacket out of the same fabric so I should have learnt my lesson then 😂. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🧵😊

I like your cargo pant mashup. I stopped making pants for myself. I have had such a problem with getting the elastic to fit. I have adjusted fit because of weight gain but, I think the elastic I have been buying for years has changed. I think the manufacturers are putting out a cheaper product as my elastic seems to grow after inserted into the casing. I got tired of having to redo the elastic to only have it not fit in the end. Do you have this problem or is there a specific brand of elastic that you use? Am I alone with this problem?
Thanks so much for your comment and so sorry you are having trouble with the elastic. Can I let you know into a naughty secret? I never sew up the elastic channels as I can never decide on the length of elastic I need and as you say, sometimes it stretches out. I use all different types of elastic and all brands so I can't really suggest any. Just wonder if my idea of leaving the gaps ready to alter may help you. 🧵😊
