- At least 125 people have died in a crush at an Indonesian football match that has become one of the world’s worst stadium disasters
About 180 were also hurt in aftermath of home team Arema FC's loss to bitter rivals at the overcrowded stadium late on Saturday in Malang, East Java.
The crush took place after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch.
Fifa President Gianni Infantino said it was "a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension".

The stadium is just few miles from where I live and later in the morning I found out there are five people in my neighborhood were the victims, one of the kid who is still in the elementary school lost both of his parents in the tragedy, and later that day I saw dozen of ambulances drove the streets across Malang. So heartbreaking, so many innocent life just taken away. My deepest condolences to the families affected. 🥀

But when the person starts distrusting another nationals or minorities due to their nationalist belief, or use violence to protect “hurt national pride”, and even say that they nation is better than the rest of the world, then it become problematic. You get things like jingoism, ultranationalist, fascism, and in this specific case, that riot on that stadium.

Yes, " no one should die over a damn game". But I noticed that for many people, a football team is an extension of themselves. If their team wins, they fly over the moon and if it loses, they get severely depressed. Under those extreme states of mind, people do become irrational.

I live in that city and have heard many first account story from the surviving victims (neighbors and acquaintances). Sure some of the fans got overly emotional over the match and run towards the field. But they got subdued quickly. The police fearing that the situation got out of hand quickly, shot the tear gas at the sitting audience. Causing mass panic and people rushing out to get away from the shooting range. What's worse the doors were locked, with only few that are opened. Most victims ( young ones and women) are dying to asphyxiation or gets crushed since the entry/departure doors gets blocked by people rushing to get out.
The police were also shooting the tear gas outside of the stadium, causing riot breaks and people burning the police vehicles. The doctors were dispatched hours after the incident (74 doctors), since they couldn't get permission from the police immediately. So far, there are 174 people passed away since they couldn't get medical treatments in time. Many are still injured and hospitalized in 3 different hospitals.
No matter where it is in the world, Cops usually make things worse.

I am a lover of Indonesian football, often watching live at the stadium but avoiding watching derby matches. Truly a sad tragedy. They watch football with their families on Saturdays for entertainment, not expecting it to end in grief. Things like this often happen, but only condolences and hope will not happen again without concrete steps from the relevant parties to overcome this problem.

I'm an indonesian. This kind of things happened alot in here but there is not alot of victims. But what i think is the one that kills is the tear gasses and it makes them asphyxiated. And alot of the cops in Indonesia is untrained. It's not because of the training but they just pay to skip training and that also makes it corrupt.

It didn't seem like anything new when they were fighting and there was a clash every time there was a match but this time was really scary. Since middle-aged fans do not come, only arema fans are watching in the field but are the victims of hundreds of deaths. All Indonesian football supporters always be too .. too fanatic since many years ago but this is the biggest riot tragedy ever in our country and maybe in the world. Almost 130 people died including children and 188 ppl got injured and maybe some of them also died now. Our police department doing deep investigation now bcs most of people died bcs the tear gas killed them. Not by fighting with others. They could not breathe in the crowded when they tried to come out of stadium . Their family are doing the protest abt their lost. Pray for us! Hope this thing won't happen again!

@@garyspruce7736 my daughter and I were accidentally tear gassed when the wind blew tear gas into our area of a concert. Police were doing crowd control two blocks away but we still felt the affects. It wasn't pleasant and it scared my daughter terribly.
Most of the people who died are because of the stampede that happened after tear gas was fired
Well indonesian fans when lose sports game..esp football..they make riot or chaos its common for them..as their neighbour country it witness by us..terrifying..we didnt have problem play football game with other southeast asian country..but not with indonesia.Many time they behave like that..i think fifa should banned them from joining football games..if they didnt fix their behaviour.

I feel so lucky that I cancel my tickets last minute because the match schedule clash with my night class schedule. I've been an Arema fans since elementary school and often come to the stadium to watch the match in person. Now I attend a college in Malang which is where Arema originated, and the stadium is only 25km away from my dorm. One of my neighbor is died in this tragedy and I swear, I'll never come to any match again 🎗️
I mean there is a vice video about Indonesia football like a few years back. It is quite common in Indonesian football.I am surprised that this accident is the only one reported worldwide.
The problem with this particular incident is the sheer amount of death. Like, this is literally the deadliest football match incident in the first half of the 21st century so far.
Beacause in this case 187 death and most of them are teenagers.

This has happened in so many soccer games throughout history it’s insane.. Never EVER follow a panicked crowd towards the exits because this is exactly how you get crushed to death by the sheer force of hundreds of people all pushing in the same direction. Or you could just avoid large crowds like this in general, not worth the risk in my opinion.

The actual stampede that led to the deaths was caused by the police firing tear gas into the seated area whilst the exits were locked. This caused the major panic that sent people stampeding everywhere. They treated everyone like rioters in a street uprising. The police escalated the situation and now we have scores of deaths instead of arrests of the relatively few troublesome fans.

my friend studied in Malang, She drove pass the Malang FC crowd on the street on her way home, her car got viciously attacked by what She described like massive zombie invasion from all direction her car got wrecked by Malang supporters...
Why? because her car's license plate was from Surabaya.
the Police didnt do anything about it at all when She filed for report.
She was an innocent struggling college student just few blocks from her flat, to cover the cost of such damage was brutal.
Ive never seen such wrecked car, It was worse than high speed car crash.
