  • In this video we take you over Medano Pass into The Great National Sand Dunes of Colorado. From there we make a pit stop at Zapata Falls (A waterfall in a cave) and then onto The Deadly Mount Blanca, a under rated jeepers paradise that brings everything a legit mountain trail has to offer including water, hard obstacles, narrow roads, cliff climbs, wildlife and three 14,000ft+ mountain peaks!! This is definitely a video series you want to stay tuned in for, so sit back, crack open a cold Dr. Pepper and enjoy this trip on one of Colorado's Deadliest Trails!!

@ Tim, A month ago had to rebuild my ford ranger engine because the cooler before the egr valve had a leak and sucked all the coolant through the engine. It was a barely noticeable coolant loss at first and pressurerising the radiator system showed no leak. Cost me a couple of thousand bucks. You might want to have an eye on that.

When you went to bonanza you went west, next time in villa Grove. Turn east to go back over the sangre de Cristo mountains and head for the royal gorge. Man Minnesota is such a change for me. I went up the Mount Blanca trail about a year after the deadly accident you talked about. We rescued someone that was sliding off of the Jaws 1 or 2 obstacle. Got them back to a safe place and headed back down the hill while we continued up. My friends Amigo lost power steering but he chose to continue up, about 1/2 way up he dislocated his thumb when the steering wheel turned violently on all of those rocks. We had to turn around and get to a safe place so we never made it to the top. I wish we had as it looks gorgeous up there. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.

It's all about the r-value for staying warm while sleeping. The ground will for sure sap heat from your body. Most likely Matt's tent was way thinner than the cot that Colt has. Adding an air pad or more layering between you and the ground will help you stay warm

About engine issue on JL - unfortunately I had the same issue on my Toyota FJ - firs it was just missing spark in one cilinder and then when I drive to the mountains temperature starts going up and down. As the result - head gasket said goodbye and hello the engine rebuild. But Toyota brought me home that time!!! But it’s cost me not just gasket replacement but total engine rebuild. Because of overheating couple times. Good luck with that, and waiting for the new adventures!!!!!

You're warmer in the tent off the ground because the ground is cold. It's the same reason you want an insulated air mat in the winter. I'd take the raised over the ground any day. I use a bivy and mat when hunting elk in Colorado, sometimes just a tarp an mat.

The main thing about camping in the cold is getting something between you and the ground. You need some type of insulation or the ground will suck the heat out of you. If you are going to ground tent, you need some type of air mattress or something to act as insulation.
Also, jumps like that with temp can indicate air bubbles in the coolant. The sudden temp spike is the sensor reading the air.

When I woke up this morning the first pop up on my phone was Medano pass One of the deadliest trails in Colorado. My first thought was this guy smoking too much of Colorado wacky weed. You had me hooked I had to watch. The guy wearing the oxygen was right we never aired down only in the dunes. We never air down anywhere on trails. But Medano does have deadly spot on the east side not far after you get into the national Forest there’s a plane crash. You’re about the same age as my middle son and you’re right we used to drive in the creek on the backside of the dunes I was just looking at those pictures the other day. For us that was our favorite spot back in the mid 80s all the way up to the 2000s. Every year at the first of summer we made that trip and then we head north to Vila Grove eat a bowl of chili then head back over Hayden pass and head home. Anywhere on the Sandy’s is home.

In the Army in Germany, we had a big squad tent. It had facilities for a kerosene stove. But we only had the stove on one outing. I remember one time, I don't remember where I first tried sleeping, but I think it was outside. It was too cold there. There was no one sleeping in the squad tent when I entered. I thought just sleeping off the ground on a cot would keep me above the cold. But my feet got cold and I couldn't sleep at all. I finally got an air mattress, but was too tired to air it up. Still it did a good job keeping the cold from coming through the canvas of the cot, even without any air. An air mattress would not work without air on the ground for sure.

Great vid Bleepin' folks...... you have very brave wives!!!!! I think Matt did a little more surfing than Colt. As far as the question of tents go Colt said "best for everything" I would not choose to be elevated for everything. I dont want 20 degree winds blowing below me as well as over me let alone the added chance of the tent launching in high winds. Matts tent needs a proper rain fly so it can breathe and condensation escape. BUT for car camping Colts is probably better. Thanks for the videos keep them coming. 👍

Rick Russel is a legend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I have all his videos on DVD, and still watch them. What cool, classic, simple 4x4s they drove. I actually emailed him one time with a comment on poor audio in a scene, and he actually replied. I felt horrible, as that was long before GoPros and wireless mics. He's who got me into off roading. I hope Rick you're doing well!

Colt mentioned Rick Russell's videos. Fun fact, I was in a few of his videos in the Colorado series. My Jeep was not in the videos as Rick thought it was too ugly (and he was correct). So, I rode as a passenger with one of my friends. The Mt. Blanca was one of the trails I was riding as a passenger.
Another fun fact about Rick's Colorado videos regarding Mt. Blanca and the Rattlesnake trails. At the beginning of the Rattlesnake trail video you can see a rattlenake striking towards a stick. That rattlesnake was actually found at the trail head of Mt. Blanca where people usually air down their tires. So, be careful as you may not think at that high elevation there would be rattlesnakes. This particular rattlesnake surprised a driver as they were airing down their tires. They heard a weird noise from what they thought was a tire. It turned out to be this rattlesnake warning the driver. The driver was practically squatting on the snake. Thank goodness they were not bitten. I safely relocated the rattlesnake away from the vehicles and watched it until the convoy move out. The snake was safe, the driver was a little freaked out but safe, and we all had an awesome day on the trail!
BleepinJeep, thanks for the videos and stories!

wheelin' a broken rig is an even bigger challenge. I came out of the cascade Mt. range in the middle of winter at 1 am on 7 cylinders and a steering box that ripped itself off the frame rail once. Sounded like a bloody CanAm and had less than 50% steering and no headlights. At one point I said "screw it" and floored it to get up an ice coated hill. I drove up a fallen tree for traction like a stripper on a pole on dollar beer night, seesawing the steering back and forth for traction on the trunk to the top. I got up and out somehow.

Ultimately the use of a self inflating Thermarest/insulating cushioning foam mattress is the warmest and most comfortable. The cold air cannot flow under it like it can with a cot or hammock. It is also cooler in hot weather, because the ground will be cooler than the hot air flowing under a cot or hammock. This tip is from my many years of camping in all weather conditions during wilderness kayaking trips.

My wife and I were hiking Blanca on 8/3/02, heard the crash on Jaws 2 and were on the scene within minutes. There was a boy scout troop also on the trail that afternoon. In that unfortunate fatality the Jeep didn't go over the side but end over end backwards down the road and continuied off at the switchback. The jeep without a hard top (can't rember if it had a bikini top) came to rest on it's side with a tall aspen tree threaded through the roll bar. I assested for a bit, there was nothing to be done for the driver. The Sherif who responded was absolutly flying up the trail driving a scrambler to get to the accident.

20 years ago, Medano was a lot of fun. Now with all the traction mats in the sand, it's kind of boring. Been up Blanca many times in my 76 full size Cherokee. I was up there as well the week before the guy rolled off of J2. I myself put my Cherokee on its top at jaws 3 in 2005. Flipped it over and drove out on it's own power. As far as jaws one goes, my favorite line was the third one the red jeep took. Cool vid for sure.

If you have to keep adding coolant, and there’s no visible leaks anywhere, it’s usually a head gasket, if you have the V-6 that’s usually what it is. Safe travels home. Good luck
