@ Tim, A month ago had to rebuild my ford ranger engine because the cooler before the egr valve had a leak and sucked all the coolant through the engine. It was a barely noticeable coolant loss at first and pressurerising the radiator system showed no leak. Cost me a couple of thousand bucks. You might want to have an eye on that.
The main thing about camping in the cold is getting something between you and the ground. You need some type of insulation or the ground will suck the heat out of you. If you are going to ground tent, you need some type of air mattress or something to act as insulation. Also, jumps like that with temp can indicate air bubbles in the coolant. The sudden temp spike is the sensor reading the air.

I miss the san Luis valley. I lived on highway one sixty. Man the places that valley has to offer are so beautiful. Thank you for the revisit. You guys look like you had quite an awesome adventure. It really was some very beautiful country and I thank you for bringing us along. Be careful out there guys 👍☮️🇺🇲
Fantastic trail. I went to the sand dunes with my son in 2020. We took road 559 which I think turned into the trail you took to the dunes. FYI we have been seeing 2nd gen 3.6 with head/ bock issues. It’s just like yours it’s normally cylinder #5. We pull the head off and find a small line between cylinders 3@5 . We take a picture of the line submit to powertrain and replace the engine.
Very beautiful scenery. Loved this video. The Mount Blanca / Lake Como trail was not on my wish list of trails for Colorado, it is now. Looking forward to the next episode. Thanks for sharing.

I love your Colorado trail series! These videos brought back a lot of memories of my childhood. Rode most of these trails in the back seat of my dads brand new 78 CJ7, 304 V8, 3 speed. Tons of trips up and down Medano creek with dads jeep club. My boy and I are watching every episode! Thanks for the great bleeping jeep entertainment.
Matt, I think you should put out a calendar with photos of the various scenery that you can only see when off-roading, because not all of us are able to go out and see those things.
I have been watching (lurking) you guys for a while now. I really enjoy your content, both of you. I just wanted to tell you I appreciate that you guys really enjoy this stuff as opposed to some other guys that do this for a living. Thanks again.
@@bleepinjeep You earned that on the first view months ago. I can just feel your passion when I watched these Deadliest Trails videos, good stuff. Back to lurk mode - lol.
wheelin' a broken rig is an even bigger challenge. I came out of the cascade Mt. range in the middle of winter at 1 am on 7 cylinders and a steering box that ripped itself off the frame rail once. Sounded like a bloody CanAm and had less than 50% steering and no headlights. At one point I said "screw it" and floored it to get up an ice coated hill. I drove up a fallen tree for traction like a stripper on a pole on dollar beer night, seesawing the steering back and forth for traction on the trunk to the top. I got up and out somehow.
That is interesting you mention Rick Russell at the start of the video. Back in 1992 I partnered with Rick and was responsible for shooting, editing and duplicating of all his videos. Our partnership lasted for 15 years and it was an amazing experience. After the first year with Rick I bought my first Jeep and am now on my 4th. I remember videoing this trail plus and many others in Colorado for a two part series we were doing. Your videos of Colorado bring back some great memories. Keep up the good work.
I went up the Mount Blanca trail about a year after the deadly accident you talked about. We rescued someone that was sliding off of the Jaws 1 or 2 obstacle. Got them back to a safe place and headed back down the hill while we continued up. My friends Amigo lost power steering but he chose to continue up, about 1/2 way up he dislocated his thumb when the steering wheel turned violently on all of those rocks. We had to turn around and get to a safe place so we never made it to the top. I wish we had as it looks gorgeous up there. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.
We hiked/backpacked this trail 8 yeas ago and hit all three 14ners. Based camped at Blanca lake (great camping spot) and caught a bunch of trout. We started in my ‘08 JK, but no other rigs with us and didn’t want to risk going as a single rig. Turned out to be the move with huge fall down trees blocking the trail at the time. Loved it, need to go back and run my rig to the top.
A cot tent is the best. The ground gets cold fast at night. Thanks for taking us on your journey, thus us something I have always wanted to do Love your channel ❤️
Awesome views, very beautiful places. About engine issue on JL - unfortunately I had the same issue on my Toyota FJ - firs it was just missing spark in one cilinder and then when I drive to the mountains temperature starts going up and down. As the result - head gasket said goodbye and hello the engine rebuild. But Toyota brought me home that time!!! But it’s cost me not just gasket replacement but total engine rebuild. Because of overheating couple times. Good luck with that, and waiting for the new adventures!!!!!
Did anyone notice the mountain lion? 25:06 Just to the left of the pine tree up in the rocks. I had to rewind like ten times, definitely a lion! Love the channel guys! Love the new content! Matt I meant it when I said you inspired me at the Dixie Run a few years back. I've been following your channel since day one brother. Got 4 jeeps now! LOL You guys have to do the Dixie Run this year! Please! Meet me at the first Holler!!
2nd Jeep shows what lockers could/would do in these situations. I have always said that the JK/JLs run waaaaayyyyy too hot. Heat wrecks engines especially head gaskets like you said. If I owned a 3.6 (mine is an LT powered JK) I would modify the program and set a 185F thermostat in there.
I've done Blanca peak a few times. It's absolutely stunning and hair-raisingly adventurous. Highly suggest this trail to anyone who is experienced and wants to hit a very crazy trail.
Cool upload thanks! You're warmer in the tent off the ground because the ground is cold. It's the same reason you want an insulated air mat in the winter. I'd take the raised over the ground any day. I use a bivy and mat when hunting elk in Colorado, sometimes just a tarp an mat.
Nice to see y'all hitting a trail I recommended 🤙. For the tent question I sleep in a ground tent but if I was in a wet area and there could be standing water I would have to go with the tent off the ground. Oh and if you look in the distance not far from that Gator farm you will see a good friend of mine's farm 😂
9:55 Colt, my Dad always told me the two areas you lose body heat the most, is your head, and laying on the ground. I recently tried out a Crua Koala Maxx with the rain fli, and I got a great night sleep.
I am the great cornholio! I need tp for my bunghole. Lake Titicaca! Nicaragua! Matt really had me laughing with that one, brought back some memories lol 😂
Love your channel! Thanks for the awesome information and sharing your adventures. Bleeping Colt is a great guy so hate to pick on him but having lived in Colorado for close to 68 years & coming to the San Luis Valley since ‘68 to hunt I have yet to cross the continental divide before Wolf Creek pass over 75 hwy miles west of La Veta pass over the Sangre De Cristo range. I’m nitpicking so shame on me! lol I’ve thought about sharing UA-cam vids of Como Lake road with Trail Recon, Lite Brite or other UA-camrs to have an episode of this road but you’ve done an awesome job! My wife & I love mountain rides! It’s awesome to see your wives tagging along & enjoying trips with you!
20 years ago, Medano was a lot of fun. Now with all the traction mats in the sand, it's kind of boring. Been up Blanca many times in my 76 full size Cherokee. I was up there as well the week before the guy rolled off of J2. I myself put my Cherokee on its top at jaws 3 in 2005. Flipped it over and drove out on it's own power. As far as jaws one goes, my favorite line was the third one the red jeep took. Cool vid for sure.
Cot tent less crawlies and not having to get off the ground is better, but just being up there I'd settle for the piece of tarp and a swag, glad you all had a great time, all the best to yous and your loved ones
Man even on easy trails, when you get that lean towards the edge it definitely makes you pucker up. Couple years ago when were were out there and my niece's cousin rode with me, she had to look away from the edge like Hope was doing 😂.
Great job on the videos, You are by far my favorite to watch on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing your experiences out there on the trail and the informative how to’s
I have a Cot tent and forgot who makes it,but it's the single person model, and I'll take that over a dome ground tent anyday, got down to the low 30's a few nights in Colorado and I stayed nice and warm with a plus 30° sleeping bag!
My wife and I were hiking Blanca on 8/3/02, heard the crash on Jaws 2 and were on the scene within minutes. There was a boy scout troop also on the trail that afternoon. In that unfortunate fatality the Jeep didn't go over the side but end over end backwards down the road and continuied off at the switchback. The jeep without a hard top (can't rember if it had a bikini top) came to rest on it's side with a tall aspen tree threaded through the roll bar. I assested for a bit, there was nothing to be done for the driver. The Sherif who responded was absolutly flying up the trail driving a scrambler to get to the accident.
Ultimately the use of a self inflating Thermarest/insulating cushioning foam mattress is the warmest and most comfortable. The cold air cannot flow under it like it can with a cot or hammock. It is also cooler in hot weather, because the ground will be cooler than the hot air flowing under a cot or hammock. This tip is from my many years of camping in all weather conditions during wilderness kayaking trips.
There’s a story that in the 1800’s there was a hotel at Lake Como. The tourists were transported in horse drawn wagons. It’s an exciting trail for sure.
I really enjoy your videos! They are fun and informative. I just have one question, why would somebody buy your nylon trash bag instead of using free grocery sacks? I also noticed a Wyoming plate. It would be nice to see a series on Wyoming trails.
Good question! The BleepinJeep trash sack is, bigger, much tougher, can be hung outside on the tire or roll cage, is reusable, can be washed out, and doesn't fly away and create litter.
Wow guys you certainly get to some of the most picturesque places and interesting trails to say the least, thanks for sharing cheers for now, and I think Colts tent would be better sorry Matt.
Matt, in the winter if your sleeping on the ground you need some type of insulator, a half inch thick pad works great, between you and the ground. The ground will suck your bodies warmth out and you can easily become hypothermic. Seen this first hand in the Mojave at Fort Irwin Nat. Training Center when one of our guys had to be medevac'd after sleeping on the dirt with just his sleeping bag. Hypothermia can creep up on you and your body can reach a dangerously low core temp. which can become deadly if not treated in time
When I woke up this morning the first pop up on my phone was Medano pass One of the deadliest trails in Colorado. My first thought was this guy smoking too much of Colorado wacky weed. You had me hooked I had to watch. The guy wearing the oxygen was right we never aired down only in the dunes. We never air down anywhere on trails. But Medano does have deadly spot on the east side not far after you get into the national Forest there’s a plane crash. You’re about the same age as my middle son and you’re right we used to drive in the creek on the backside of the dunes I was just looking at those pictures the other day. For us that was our favorite spot back in the mid 80s all the way up to the 2000s. Every year at the first of summer we made that trip and then we head north to Vila Grove eat a bowl of chili then head back over Hayden pass and head home. Anywhere on the Sandy’s is home.
Great vid Bleepin' folks...... you have very brave wives!!!!! I think Matt did a little more surfing than Colt. As far as the question of tents go Colt said "best for everything" I would not choose to be elevated for everything. I dont want 20 degree winds blowing below me as well as over me let alone the added chance of the tent launching in high winds. Matts tent needs a proper rain fly so it can breathe and condensation escape. BUT for car camping Colts is probably better. Thanks for the videos keep them coming. 👍

Thanks for lurking hopefully we earned the bell click and follow😉👍
@@bleepinjeep You earned that on the first view months ago. I can just feel your passion when I watched these Deadliest Trails videos, good stuff. Back to lurk mode - lol.
Great job! We run this trail at least, Two times a year. The rocks, the view, and the camping and fishing is amazing!!
Great video love it. Up there with some of your best. Thank you for letting us tag along. God bless you guys take care can’t wait to see your next one
a canvas tent with a heat source good fer any weather guys!! nuff beer ill be sleepin on the ground anyway lol ! love the shows
wheelin' a broken rig is an even bigger challenge.
Ms. Bleeping Matt, you are an awesome passenger! I'd have to drive or hop out and walk it.
I used to ride my dirt bike up Blanca Peak Trail when I was a kid. Beautiful trail.
Gazelle T4 tent with a cot inside. Best of both worlds! Its my favorite setup other than sleeping in thr back of the truck
Absolutely beautiful, looking forward to seeing the rest of this series 👍😎
Thank you for sharing.
A cot tent is the best.
The ground gets cold fast at night.
Thanks for taking us on your journey, thus us something I have always wanted to do
Love your channel ❤️
Righteous ride. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Fab waterfalls. Great sand dune. Cot tent.
If you put a skirt around the raised tent it would keep an air pocket under the tent and would be warmer than the one on the ground.
I love Hope. Thanks for the adventures 😊
I've done Blanca peak a few times. It's absolutely stunning and hair-raisingly adventurous. Highly suggest this trail to anyone who is experienced and wants to hit a very crazy trail.
I'm from Colorado and used to do all those trails on my dirt bike. For some reason they're just not scary on a dirt bike.
Great adventure guys! Also I'm going with the colt cot tent all day XD
The views are mind blowing
Very cool for your dad's commentary
Cool upload thanks!
You're warmer in the tent off the ground because the ground is cold. It's the same reason you want an insulated air mat in the winter. I'd take the raised over the ground any day. I use a bivy and mat when hunting elk in Colorado, sometimes just a tarp an mat.
I loved hearing from your dad Colt. That was cool.
Thank you!👍
WOW! Amazing.
Really enjoy your videos.Good learning material...Keep up the great work your doing...👍😊
Very good video with the drown and explanation of the different sections. Look forward to more.
9:55 Colt, my Dad always told me the two areas you lose body heat the most, is your head, and laying on the ground. I recently tried out a Crua Koala Maxx with the rain fli, and I got a great night sleep.
Almost lost a camera on that journey. Epic placement between rocks saved it. Love the trails.
I vote for the Cabela's tent. Much more comfortable than laying on hard soil!
Great video I just climbed Mt Blanca couple weeks ago very fun trail we camped at lake como
I Love this channel!
Absolutely beautiful!!!
Yes she is.
Man even on easy trails, when you get that lean towards the edge it definitely makes you pucker up. Couple years ago when were were out there and my niece's cousin rode with me, she had to look away from the edge like Hope was doing 😂.
You got that right!
what a great time.. thanks for sharing .
Great job on the videos, You are by far my favorite to watch on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing your experiences out there on the trail and the informative how to’s
a very awesome video thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
I have a Cot tent and forgot who makes it,but it's the single person model, and I'll take that over a dome ground tent anyday, got down to the low 30's a few nights in Colorado and I stayed nice and warm with a plus 30° sleeping bag!
Wow what an amazing trail you should get Matt's morvair and fabrats fj to do it again with you great series keep it up
My wife and I were hiking Blanca on 8/3/02, heard the crash on Jaws 2 and were on the scene within minutes.
Cant beat a good old swag for cold weather camping.
Looks like a fun trail. keep up the awesome videos.
You bet!
Hypothermia can creep up on you and your body can reach a dangerously low core temp. which can become deadly if not treated in time
My hat is off to you guys that's a gutsy ride
Beautiful scenery!
You guys seem like so much fun 😊 I really need to go driving in the Pryors soon :)
we forgot to mention folded size, mine is large but flat and colts is large and refrigerator like, lol😆
