Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I think Fieldy's tone is sick, and Korn certainly wouldn't be the same without it. So here's a Fieldy-ish tone I just threw together and the process I used to get there.
Here are the plugins I'm using:
Markbass - overloud.com/products/mark-st...
Neural - neuraldsp.com/plugins/darkgla...
Fresh Air - slatedigital.com/fresh-air/
I love his tone to death. MASSIVE props to you for playing Oildale!!
Thanks dude. Props for noticing it haha, such a forgotten banger! 🤘🤘
@@RichiiWainwright you’re very welcome! My ears are trained across nearly every octave so I can recognize every single KoЯn riff there is.
I love his bass tone. I'm not even a bass player but it stands out to me a lot. I think it would work really good for a funk genre too.
IMO fresh strings are a big part of that Fieldy sound, you have obviously been able to achieve it with older strings but in my experience, simply installing fresh strings will get you that Fieldy sound much faster, like 75 - 80% of it, and also helps cut down on the adding too much treble in the processing stage becase new strings are naturally more clanky. Anyway, good video, don't see too many people appreciate Fieldy's tone these days
I'm about to change mine and I can't wait to jam with this tone after 😆 it does make it easier, I wouldn't personally say 80% of the sound but it's definitely a key ingredient 🤘
If you’re listening on a phone, bear in mind this tone’s gonna sound like shit through the tiny speaker. I’d recommend headphones or something. Links for the plugins I’m using are in the description. Thanks for watching!
Loved this video, man! You nailed it!!! Thanks a lot for the info!!
one of the best bass tones ever in my opinion theres just so much anger and grit to it i love it!
Love your videos man
hell yeah bro this is exactly what I needed! thank you!
Glad this helped dude! 🤘
I personally use a Darkglass b7k ultra pedal. Just crank the bass and treble, make sure the growl and bite switches are on, and you're pretty much set.
It is a super versatile pedal and you can definitely get pretty close using that and nothing else, I just wanted to keep going after using it to see how close I could get 🤘
I've been hearing the Darkglass name for bass for a while now. I'm not a bass player per se but I do record all of my own shit so definitely gonna check that out.
The second you started playing the bass i was like, HOLY FREAKKK!
I don't care what others say. Other than Primus Fieldy's bass is the only one I hear that doesn't bore me. As far as bass guitar. Bass synth is a whole other story.
Holy shit, was playing this straight off the phone and thought wtf is that x'D
Then popped my Pro Buds in and holy shit, that tone is GODLY
I use a fender squier 5 string, and I’m honestly happy with my tone but love fieldys and I’ll often adjust my amp to sound closer to his tone but I don’t have a digital Amp to anything, so yeah
Hey man awesome video i want to buy ibanez sr305E-PW do u think i can get fieldy tone on it?
I have a total love-hate relationship with Fieldy's bass tone. What I hate about his tone is how the complete lack of midrange really buries the actual notes he plays, considering how much his use of insanely dissonant intervals really adds to Korn's creepy atmosphere. But at the same time, the lack of mids is also genius considering that's where the guitar lies, so that way the bass can be absolutely CRANKED up with less worry of burying the guitars in the mix. I don't know about you, but I love me a present bass track.
100% agree with everything you're saying. Cutting all the mids gives a cool sound but it means losing note definition which sucks. That's one reason why I love the Untouchables album - there's way more mids in the bass, but without it sounding any less fieldy-ish. Such a powerful bass sound on that album
It's difficult for him as well, because Head and Munky take up so much room frequency wise. I hate the mixing on the albums from the mid 2000s to Paradigm Shift for how buried Fieldy is in the mix, that being said Korn add a lot of stuff to further fill up the space now, where as classic Korn left a lot of room for Fieldy to do some interesting grooves. I've loved Korn forever, but I do miss when Fieldy was showcased on a song more. I think it's because Ray is just not that drummer. Technically a much better drummer, and great for what Korn is doing now, but not so great for that classic Korn groove.
Great video man. Can you do some demonstrations of Les Claypool and Justin Chancellor?
Thanks dude! I've done a tool bass tone video and will probably do a les one if I ever get a Primus style tone I'm happy with 😆
Fine! Really close to the original. Have you got please, an analogic solution too.
Thanks! You should be able to get pretty close with whatever gear you have by following the steps I've detailed in this vid. Like I said in the video, you don't need to use the plugins Im using here. You just need the understanding on what characteristics you're listening for and the things you can do to get closer to recreating it 👍
Nice job, normaly i used zoom b3 to get this sound even with the K5 i got, i used two heads one with only valves, another with transistors and a drive pedal without the blend and drive, you can check this out in my channel, thanks for the video!!
Is that a SR305EB model by Ibanez or something simmilar??...just curious because it looks like that model. However, I may be mistaken. Nice vid by the way.
It is yeah. You have a good eye haha. And thank you!
@@RichiiWainwright It just looks fammiliar..I have the same one lol :) it is a great bass.
@@renemosny6235 oh cool! Agreed, absolutely amazing instrument for the price
I’m new to bass. What gauge do you recommend or consider “light”? I’ve been using NYXL 5 string set.
I'd say 45 - 125/130 is ideal
really helpfull
Glad I could help you out!
why dont they ever play Oildale live? Haven't played it since 2010 it seems
What bass are you using?
Ibanez SR-305!
How is called the First song you played 0:52
Clown, off the first album! 🤘
Nive tutorial but I have a question, for a Take a look in the mirror kind of tone how much should I set the gain nob and well the rest of the nobs as well hahaha, that's my favorite bass tone of all time and I find it so hard to replicate
Agreed. Tastiest bass sound all time. I've gotten super close before but only by doing really weird things like running the signal through guitar amps and bass amps at the same time. From what I can tell that tone is basically fieldys usual tone but with more distortion and some high mids. But the distortion is a specific crunchy af sound which is so hard to get so I'd experiment with different amps and pedals if you have the means to
@@RichiiWainwright yeah it's like the usual tone he used to have but something different about that tone is what makes it perfect, and it wasn't just turning the volume up like a lot of people say xD, i'll experiment with the stuff you've told me to do, that mixing guitar and bass amp sounds interesting, I have no idea how you do it but i'll try it out to see what can I get
@@RichiiWainwright if you get that bass tone please make a tutorial, that TALITM bass tone is a tasty one 😆
@@Killerman551 I may do that! It's gonna be a complicated one if I do though 😅
Now I just have to get a bass
😆😆 Do it! Nice profile pic btw 🤘
What is the program that you use to combine effects from different prgrams?
cubase!
@@RichiiWainwright Thank You very much!
I will say Fieldy is playing a tuning. Some of the stuff he does on record is really hard to tell just because the wall of guitars with his tuning the human ear cannot hear. I love Fieldy but it can be a chore to get his rhythm and sound correct. But you did a great job on this video friend
I'd like to add, I think his tone is musical genius born of musical ignorance. Not a slight against him, he just figured out how to be audible without ruining the mix. Conversely, he's enhancing their mix, and he just figured that out organically.
Absolutely agree. Great point
what daw do u use?
Cubase!
Fieldy's playing only really makes sense with the drums.
Only fieldys bass #1 carved in it can sound like him..its the bass...not fieldy
It's just glorified percussion at this point
Fieldy himself views him as another drummer for Korn sort of.
the bass sound of Fieldy is crappy for a reason. It leaves room for the guitars. All the bass is doing is hitting subs for bottom and clanky highs for definition. By itself its trash.
For sure, and their engineers did a great job of scooping everything and making tons of room for each instrument. You can hear every member clearly and it really thumps with a good sound system.
