For snare, I take thestutter out of global and put just on the snare, and put Time just above zero, and depth up to just before you hear a retrigger. Set decay long on the snare, and the sound gets choked by the stutter retriggering. Layer that with the clap and you hve a really nice snare sound... snappy as!
Wow, dude! This is by far the best walkthrough/review I have seen on the Volca Beats. I have been an avid fan of the Volca series ever since they came out... They were the perfect companion to my brand new MS-20 mini and afforded me an education in electronic music that would have been previously impossible. Anyways, I don’t wanna ramble here but did wanna give you a quick ‘high five’ regarding this video. I hope you pick up more Volcas and do similar videos for the them - I know the internet is not lacking content or reviews on these things, but you really do these little machines justice here and it’s nice to see a concise review that hits all the relevant points. Congrats!
When you have speed + stutter selected you can hold record (I did it with my pinky) and turn both the pcm speed, and stutter knobs to get some funky sounds out of it.
Hey Nu-Trix... cool vid, man! I use a LOOPER for recording my 8 memories... The snare I pair with the hi-hat, thus it becomes a lot stronger... Thanks for Uploading! All the best!
Good stuff man, yep it's not the ultimate beatbox but it's a super fun and affordable tool. The motion recording can yield super cool results. Just picked one up yesterday for less than 100 bucks, it's still a bargain at full new price
I like the snare on it, but I think people come to it with odd expectations. It's not a TR-808 clone, but an homage to Korg's late 70s/early 80s drum machines like the KR-55 and KPR-77, which the analog sounds a very consistent with in my opinion, particularly the '55, which basically has the same snare and kick.
the odd expectation that Korg could have soldered on the missing transistor? really, how can people expect to get something that's not broken^^ With the mod/fix everything's alright.
O ideal para a snare soar melhor, seria diminuir o volume de todas as parts mantendo a snare mais alta, mas ela volta para o volume de fábrica toda vez que é desligada/ligada... (Portuguese)
The one thing that REALLY pisses me off about the KV Beats is not the Snare or the absence of accents or panning (although these shortcomings are annoying). The main problem I have with the Beats is the ridiculously limited memory of eight one bar patterns. Only eight pattern slots!? The workflows on all Volcas is so addictive that you just want to keep on doodling and coming up with ideas but there's nowhere for your ideas to go once you've filled up the limited memory. I hope Korg bring out a KV Beats mkII with 100 chainable pattern slots. That would make the box perfect for me.
I agree, it's the biggest failing of all the Volcas and really limits their live use, but at the price point they're great. You can always use them as sound modules controlled from an external sequencer to expand their memories, but you don't get all the cool motion record features (unless you use the VSTs through Ableton or somesuch to control them - I think they might handle all interface controls over MIDI). Your alternative is to pick up an Electribe ER-1. Loads of great analogue drum sound design and a decent number of patch memories, plus full MIDI support. There is a snare fix for the Beats if you're brave enough to handle soldering SMCs, or can find someone who can do the fix for you. There are guys who advertise this as a service on ebay if you look. It makes the snare truly snappy and more 606ish.
i dig the volca beats and i did the snare mod to it sounds much better, but my beats doesnt record ,led blinks tempo blinks, you can play live but no recording,it was like this when i got it,anyone out there know a fix for it,i cant find anyone that will troubleshoot it
How do you sync the stutter to tempo as mentioned in this video, I might be stupid and have just missed the part where you demo that feature but I haven't been able to figure it out? Any help would be appreciated :)
It should be automatic. when the Voice receive MIDI clock info it switch to slave to Midi Clock. But it only sync when in play mode (If I remember well)
The snare isn't really bad at all. It's different. I think people poorly sculpt it and use it incorrectly. I just wish that the active step wasn't global and that you can have the stutter effect on all the parts your heart desires rather than just globally or one at a time. Distortion should also have been added.
Thanks mate :) That sounds fairly arduous! O.O I wonder if Korg are properly aware of this shortcoming? (I've been for a long time looking across a crowded room (of sexy equipment) at these cute Korg kits XD - can't make up my mind)
pretty cool little machine,i bought it used, unfortunately the step sequencer doesnt work all i can do on it is play live,i havent seen any trouble shooting vids and the manual doesnt help,i sent korg an email, but no response,it be cool if its an easy fix,
gonna try that with a korg ddd-1,but im a newbe to midi, have a microkorg and an alesis sr-16 ima try out to ,have you heard of the sequencer not working,id like to fix the volca so i can take it camping and such,i added an external speaker cuz the stock one sucks,lol@@Nu-trix
Thanks for the great video! I try to sync my Volca Beats with Ableton, sync sims to work but the problem comes when I push the play button. 16 step is played within 2 measures, to say in other words, my 16 steps are played with a speed of 1/32. How could I control step division (don't know how to call it). Please, give me any hint. Thanks!
Hidden feature : hold 'Function' while you turn the 'Stutter Time' knob for tempo-synced stutter divisions.

Set decay long on the snare, and the sound gets choked by the stutter retriggering. Layer that with the clap and you hve a really nice snare sound... snappy as!
Also, it sounds great through a compressor
Great tips thanks!
I'm gonna try this
How to make stutter only on one part?
Justin Saunders turn off global stutter by using func + global stutter then use the part buttons to arrow over to the part you want to stutter
I've had this thing for years and I've always thought it's pretty boring and simple machine, but this video gave me so many ideas!
Best vid yet been searching for days

Thanks a lot for this. I'm new to beat making and this is my first machine. Very enjoyable review.

All the best!
Seems like a great buy for a first drum machine. Really cool stuff
Midi out is three clearly marked and easy to solder points on the board. I personally only use it as a sound source not a sequencer.
Thanks very much for sharing your tips in this video 👍

I also did the snare-mod plus added midi-out which makes it more useful with other stuff.

Didn't know it has Solo.
Very useful, thanks!

Thank you! This was very helpful compared to other videos on the subject.
No había visto esa etiqueta de puede ser dañino para su salud, jejejeje, buen review.
time to subscribe..this guy is good

Eyebrow ring, haven’t seen one of those in a minute. I used to have two of them ;)
Thank you, thus machine is beyond awesome
The snare needs to be modified. I just bought this last month and like it a lot
Dude, so much fun hey? 👏😎🎛🤘🤘🤘
Yep, the Volca are “instant gratification” devices.
Thanks, I just purchased one...
Hey, I own the Roland TR08. Do you think the Volca is also worth buying, or is it close to the TR08?
Gracias amigo
you explain so clearly, thanks!
All musical instruments are toys to Play with and have fun 👍
That is why we PLAY music 😉
@@Nu-trix Exactly 😁
So regarding your only complaint - is there a unit at a similar price range that does allow you to save/record your beats?
thanks - great vid, got me started
Very good, informative video, thank you!

The snare layered with the clap at a high pitch and the high tom with a short decay is actually really nice.
Should I buy for first time
It is a good easy to use first drum machine. ( and affordable)
Hi what is the best korg volca for hip hop beats???? By the way Great video
Probably the volca sample or volca drum?
Good video
Thanks
Is there a sneaky workaround for the memory lack? (12:35)
Write down on piece of paper the paterns and record the audio of every instrument in solo.
Thanks mate :)

Buy more than one Beats. Particularly now that they're 'old' gear and are pretty cheap! Haha
How do you record this in logic?
Hey! Could you tell me how you recorded the volca for this video? I see the 1/8” out but what is it going into?
I'm using a Roland Go Mixer audio interface for my iPhone like this one : amzn.to/2FYirBU
pretty cool little machine,i bought it used, unfortunately the step sequencer doesnt work all i can do on it is play live,i havent seen any trouble shooting vids and the manual doesnt help,i sent korg an email, but no response,it be cool if its an easy fix,
odd h , don’t forget that you can trigger it using MIDI and use an external sequencer.
gonna try that with a korg ddd-1,but im a newbe to midi, have a microkorg and an alesis sr-16 ima try out to ,have you heard of the sequencer not working,id like to fix the volca so i can take it camping and such,i added an external speaker cuz the stock one sucks,lol@@Nu-trix
Nice Video
Okay today is your day, Sir. Show me n i will brag about ya. #pie
Does it work without batteries and does it come with power cable?
first last name , it can work without batteries but the power supply is not included.
Thanks for the great video! Do these boxes have any type of swing function?
Sadly no.
You can use the Korg SyncKontrol app or an external midi clock to add swing with the volcas
You could add some sort of swing feel with triplets from stutter mode as a (limited) workaround (use func+time knob)
definitely not warm ...
Sad but too limited
Hopefully not more than $50 or so bucks - Can NOT imagine spending more than that on this toy.
ok but dont cry over it
