Try going to the object properties tab and changing the "display as" option under the viewport display menu. That can be used to switch your domain to a wireframe view. If your bake button isn't there, your cache type is probably set to replay. Try changing it to modular or final mode. Cheers!
The idea is great, but from a physical stand point it's a bit weird to see lava melt stuff instantly. Ideally one should have the lava gradually melt the object but I guess it's a mess with the order of the modifiers
Yes, it definitely needs some more refinement. I'm thinking that more gradual melting could be possible by using a lower alpha on the dynamic paint, and multiplying it gradually.
