So glad I found this video! With the conventional stance I’ve always felt that at at the top of my backswing the club is too far behind me..and I’m trying too hard to get it all the way back. Tried the open stance and BINGO! So easy to bring the club right down the target line. I’ve since watched and bought Freddy Couples book..he does the same and Lee Trevino. Golf is so much easier now.
I discovered this on the range yesterday and everything you describe is exactly what I felt.
I've played from a somewhat closed stance for 30-plus years, and always aiming right because I hit draws (or hooks) 99 percent of the time. But recently, I've noticed how hard it is for me to turn my hips completely through the shot. They seem to stall out about halfway, then it dawned on me: why not cheat a little and play with an open stance? I'm too much inside out as it is and can't hit a fade when I need it most of the time, especially with irons. This makes so much sense in that with an open stance, I've preset impact position to a degree as long as my shoulder plane works down with the side crunch. The Trevino example was spot on. I think this needs to be my swing model in my advancing age (though I still have pretty good swing speed), which is opposite of what I see from many other instructors for senior players.
age is a bitch
This is incredible…I’m now in my 40s and have been struggling with creating enough room in my downswing…I’ve always maintained my neutral to slightly closed address position with my feet…opening my stance slightly has dramatically improved my move through the ball…and the smothered hook I’ve been struggling with has reverted back to the baby draw of my 20s…thank you!
What a great video, I am an older golfer with limited rotation and distance. I have recently gone to the open stance after watching " Wayne Defrancesco's " video to help with back issues. What I have noticed in your video was that you accentuated having the shoulders in- line with the shaft when coming through the ball. I went back and watched WD"s video again and he also has his shoulders in-line with the shaft on the downswing. I had missed that in his video. I have been more upright shoulders more level and not generating very much club head speed and power. I just grabbed an iron and duplicated your swing , what a difference,. I can see how it will generate more power. I will not be able to bend as much but can still get my shoulders in-line. Thank You so much.
I open my feet and hips to the target. It varies how on how far left depending on the length of shot, slope etc. Weight 60/40 on lead foot. I generally only ever want to hit a fade but if I do need to hit a draw I'll just move my shoulders and ball position. I'm off 1.1. This a very good instructional video 👍🏻
As a senior golfer and not too flexible I find I get to my left side much easier with the open stance ...thank you for this tip...
Excellent tip...
‘You’ve got to admit it’s a great game’. That’s my favorite part of the video. Perfect summary to his advice whereby you essentially need to explore for yourself what works best to get your desired path/face position. No one would probably teach it, but it certainly work for Trevino. Few would argue that he’s one of the best ball strikers ever.
Holy crap finally explained properly
It's a great game indeed, and you're a great teacher!!!
I've played open stance but my shoulders are square at setup and take club inside. On downswing hands are passive and body Pivot hits ball as hips will obey feet line. Pure power and consistency.
Excellent visual and explanation. No question, you Jonathan your details of the golf swing is extraordinary. Thank you. Greatly appreciated.
Thanks 👍
A bit resembled with the Eureka method to achieve inside-out swing path for optimal impact on the ball and through.
Very interesting. I found your video and am impressed with the instruction in it. I have dabbled with an open stance at times but never committed to to it. I don’t have a big shoulder turn on backswing and have typically played from a closed stance to attempt drawing the ball. Does not happen as I tend to push slice a lot. Maybe the open stance will make it happen easier. Certainly, going to give it a go.
Great video Jonathan and I know, for me, I need to master this shoulder plane. Particularly interesting where you talk about bowing/arching of the spine in addition to the side bend or crunch.
I have been working on this for a few months. Despite being a senior and built like Trevino, lots of practice has greatly increased my flexibility. I have focussed on starting my hip rotation momentarily sooner than letting my shoulders or arms join in. That gives me more space and faster lag release than shoulders and hips together.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 top Video Jon!
Super erklärt und eine super Unterstützung für das Training auf der Range zwischen den Trainingseinheiten bei Dir! Schönen Sonntag und LG
Excellent explanation
Thanks indeed. Indepth details.
It is the Lee Trevino method. The older I get, my hip rotation (flexibility) is getting worse and worse, I have, so it causes me to drop the club inside (underneath the plane)and hit blocks most of the time because of coming from the inside. If I open up my stance (feet, hips, and shoulders), I just hit the same block, but it shifts my swing plane better down the line. 😂. I have been experimenting with the more open stance for the past few months. I have been reluctant to use it all time because is hard to get a consistent address position with alignment and ball position, but finding out it may be necessary. Might have to go to the Lee Trevino golf method.
Wow a lot of information.
9.9 handicap was 10.7.
I have lower back flexibility problems. I had a lot of problems with slice with driver as most of us do. I can’t really separate. I started to open my feet at address and close my shoulders shot a 74 lowest score ever got.
Love it.. great tip !
Didn't open stance school cover this like ten years ago? I'll look for it. ...
Yes. Right. Open Stance Academy. He was the first open stance guy to hit the Tube. I think I saw this topic in his book as a matter of fact. 2015. Everyone is onto it now that most Tour players have switched.
I would think I would want to strike a balance between how much forward hip rotation I need and how much my backswing has been compromised.
Are you facing the target fully turned or to the left ? Great video 👍 ... i think this will help with my shanks coming too much from the inside with a closed stance 😊
Left of target at the end of my swing
Good 👍 stuff here, Jonathan, but for those of us who aren’t able to just get into this position and who aren’t able to feel it what are some drills to help us achieve it besides just opening our stance slightly? Thanks!
Coming on Sunday:)
open stance , hips open but what about the shoulders .At set up they should point at target or aiming to the left following the path of the open stance ( feets and hips ) ? I feel that if everything feet, hips, shoulders aims to the left with open stance I start to hook the ball
This may sound strange, but what creates problems in the golf swing for most golfer is closing their stance, so what you're saying is with the shoulder swinging on a Plane, our mind is telling us, you're going to hit too far to the right and you redirect your clubpath or coming across your body to stop the slice.
So if you set up the same but with an Open Stance the Shoulder Plane will not change other than a better Hip rotation and maybe clubhead speed, does this make any sense...
Yes😀
Thank you 👊@@JonathanTaylor63
Ditto!
Are you restricting you backswing turn with an open stance?
Yes
At the same time you open your stance, can you flare your right foot to increase your backswing turn?
Maybe a little but that will restrict your hip turn through the ball again. Don‘t worry too much about the loss of speed it is nothing against the ball speed that you gain with increased lag.
@@JonathanTaylor63 Thanks for the tip. I hit my driver better than I ever have today. My playing partners repeatedly commented on how well I was hitting the ball off the tee.
You did Not show where the feet are...is the right foot pulled back or the left ?
Understanding that feet direction is irrelevant frees up the golfer to play golf the way it's meant to be played: with the hands & arms.
For example, the best way to hit a stinger draw is with the ball back in an open stance. 🤯
What's the role of the swing plane in hitting a draw? Seems like steeper shoulders at impact would imply a steeper swing plane. Is that what you're saying?
Your shoulders will influence the plane but only very little compared to your wrists.
@@JonathanTaylor63 what about my wrists influences my plane?
Your wrist will totally influence your plane with more flexion flattening the plane and extension steepening the plane.
@@JonathanTaylor63 Could you give more detail? I always interpreted the photos and pictures of players that had lines through their shaft and lead arm as the indicators of plane. Is there corroboration about the wrists and plane anywhere in writing or media so I can get a better understanding of what you’re saying?
Never mind. I found the guy who knows. Ever heard of John Wright? Open Stance Academy. Apparently, his work predates yours by years…. He answers my questions, too. I’m out.
I have long arms and short legs ...this is more helpful
Nothing worse than clicking on a video trying to learn something and a guy shows up with two fuc-king pieces of sticks trying to convince you to listen to them to learn more about golfing 😢.
Simple as that......NOT!
