THE BEST Senior Golf Swing for Elite Level Play and Competition

  • I'm 62 years old (2019) and have limited trunk mobility due to multiple back, elbow, foot and other surgeries from injuries during my long teaching and playing career. Most of the online instruction catering to senior golfers focuses on increasing the backswing arc by closing the stance and maximizing the backswing turn, while I go in the totally opposite direction by suggesting that the best swing technique for senior golfers still interested in competing who are coping with limited flexibility and continuing back pain is the open stance. My back was fused on 2 levels in 1986. Since then I have played in 8 major championships, 5 on the regular tour and 3 senior majors, won the National Club Professional Championship in 2001, and won 3 Maryland State Opens, all with the open stance. This technique has been proven in elite-level competition. Just recently I scored a 68 (2under) in the 2019 US Open Senior qualifier to miss playing in the US Senior Open by a single shot, and also scored 2 under par in the match play qualifier for my section against fellow PGA professionals of every age, not just seniors. So, when I say I believe this is the best swing for serious senior golfers, you can see why.
    If you are a serious senior golfer and wand to play your best watch the video and employ the technique within. If you need any assistance contact me at my web site WayneD.com for either an in-person or online lesson.

    Bingo! I figured out the same thing just messing around. This set up promotes a lot of freedom in the swing. There are quite a few great ball strikers that use an open stance. My problem was getting the left side out of the way - this solved that problem. Just needed to get a good path and you're all set. Works great for older golfers that have some game.

    Hi Wayne, I’m a 69 year old who loves to play golf,but I was having a lot of trouble getting the ball to go in the direction I wanted. I had a bad front nine, so I decided to just pre open my stance because I have a hard time clearing my hips. The result was I started hitting the ball in the middle of the fairway. So I went to UA-cam to find someone that could explain this method correctly. I will continue to try this now that I found someone that understands that older players can’t swing like the younger players. Thanks

    This is one of the best golf videos on UA-cam. While I’m certainly not a senior (only 32), I am pretty stiff from powerlifting and otherwise sedentary career choice (J.D./law). I generally tend to come from too far from the inside, so this slightly open stance helps me feel like I can get the club more on top of the ball for a nice, push to push draw pattern. Frees me up to aim down the left and just let it fly. Also, because of my back stiffness, I tend to use more lateral movement off the ball and a lot of wrist hinging upward to create my speed. The open stance, again, allows me to direct that speed (and the club head) more on top of the ball to get through it. Well I certainly don’t have the cool and relaxed nature of Fred Couples, I love feeling like I’m swinging more like this. Feels like the game slows down a bit, better flow and less swinging with tense muscles and more with wrist snap and leverage, all the while keeping my back from tightening up the next day. Well done, Wayne D!

    I’ve been doing the closed stance, Rocco/Ballard inspired stuff for years and though it definitely helped some, I always wondered if that was as little pain as I would feel. This has been a revelation. Thank you so much Wayne.

    hello wayne, this was a very helpful video for me.... i am 66 years old and i have some flexibility issues for sure... i tried the closed stance "best senior swing" from eric cogorno and athletic motion golf which gave me a better shoulder turn on the backswing , but stopped my ability to rotate through impact ... your open stance method really helps me rotate better... i am able to get a little more shoulder turn on the backswing by allowing my left heel to lift at the top of the backswing.... since i am rotating better and opening up my entire body at impact, i need to feel that my club is swinging inside out on the downswing ( to avoid an outside in path).... i try to feel my right wrist stays bent backwards well past impact.... i try to keep an obtuse angle (over 90 degrees) at the right elbow on my downswing to keep the downswing "wide and inside" .... it seems to work better for me if i keep my left forearm higher than my right forearm through impact, and i like to avoid excessive counterclockwise rotation of my forearms after impact..... this video was a lifesaver for me..... thanks so much for this video and the many great videos you have done over the years ..... steven vig

    I'm using something very similar to Wayne's. It's a David Toms type pattern w/ an open stance, tall posture, arms stay in front. From the top I just drop my arms and retract my left hip out of the way. Effortless and easy on the body.

    As a senior golfer myself I came to realise that I needed to adapt my swing to one that would see me through a full round of golf without back problems. Frequently I could start well and be fading by the 10th tee as the back stiffened up, playing every day was out of the question. As much as I liked to play with a more rotational single plane action the body doesn't allow it. A slightly open stance, arms elevating on the backswing and the exit point more out in front has enabled me to play pain free, plus hit it better and straighter than before. You provided a great explanation and thanks for sharing 👍

We need to rally around the experience of age and not let the bones dictate when we quit, but rather, get those bones moving in a fluid motion through impact. Thanks

    Excellent instruction! I have had back surgery and struggled playing golf pain free. I was a 7 handicap in my 40s but now i am satisfied if I can break 90. I have tried several types of swings with some relief. I found the easiest swing (Mellor) and eureka swing (Johnson). Johnson recommends an open stance to ease pain and to generate more swing speed. Then I just saw your video and it clicked - the open stance is the key. Plus my hips open easier so I can extend my swing after impact. Thanks!

I had a big slice and every teacher I went to said close your stance and open the left foot. That equated to more grinding on the knee and lucky me I developed back on hip issues as well. One day on the 13th hole I could hardly walk and said f this. I stood wide open and swung, BAM!!!! I hit a beautiful little cut. This stuff works! Playing 5 days a week and down to a 4. Thanks, man....

    Wayne, this is great stuff. Your comment about how the neutral or closed stance creates an "inability to clear the lower body heading into impact leaves the right arm back and behind the body, resulting in a “flip” or “throw” release." This is me, me, me. I was surprised trying it that I can still make a full swing (to parallel) and yet the clearing part --- well it is almost all done at address. I find myself finishing way more facing the target and up and level. Definite back saver. Can I say thank you enough?

    Great demonstration. This is essentially the Lee Trevino method, particularly the way Lee moved in the later stage of his career. It's good to see your adaptation with a more erect finish (to save the back). As a youth, I adopted the Trevino swing as, for some reason, an open stance always felt more natural to me. Over time, however, I suffered back issues (as did Lee), and so went on a quest for something that would save the back. I turned to Jimmy Ballard's method (as employed by Rocco Mediate, another victim of "golfer's back"), but after a few years working on it I just couldn't get my mind to accept the closed-stance approach. Your demonstration gives me hope that I can adopt my trusty old open-stanced swing without fear of wrecking my back!

I do suggest you tell them to be careful of rolling the wrists and causing a pulled hook or cutting the ball with a giant slice. Thanks for thinking of us seniors, and I have forwarded this to many of my friends.

Helps with my difficulty in getting my right hip into external rotation through impact and follow-thru. Absolutely flushed it. I have moved from a 25 index down to 14 in the last year, but noticed most of my bad shots are double cross left shots. The open stance has allowed me to continue to hit draws, but start right. The key seems to be that alignment to the target has more to do with the shoulders and its actually easier to clear the hips and get impact with forward shaft lean (aka lag). Its helped my ball striking a lot and I am hitting more draws than ever, with fewer outright hooks to the left, that presumably were from casting the club due to improper clearing of the hips. Anyway, I am a believer and the 270 yard draw I hit today was with an open stance (historically I drive about 230).

    Sorry Wayne, I frankly prefer the Moe Norman single plane swing. Using the principal of a wind turbine, you stay farther from the ball, this produces more speed... And everything being straight (stance, shoulders, arms), it's a lot easier to hit it straight and be consistent at impact. I'm 66 and play since I was 10.

    This definitely makes me a better driver of the golf ball, but i start the ball down my foot line and hit a little consistent fade. Are you shoulders square to the target at address or more in line with your feet? Do you try to exaggerate the downswing (magic move) like your swinging to right field? Also, I also struggle with ball position with this stance particularly the irons.

  • @mpb1472

    Complete opposite of what I have viewed or have done. I am 63, poor flexibility, with shoulder issues. For years , I have setup closed, thinking I have to turn more. I don't get the draw I want anymore and often feel myself coming out of the shot with a push/slice. I do feel restricted on the follow through, spinning left foot open. When I have tried to adopt an open stance, I hit pulls but it feels so solid. I may have to revisit the idea, after seeing this video.

    • @wdefrancesco
      @wdefrancesco  3 роки тому +2

      There are a few things you can try to increase clubhead speed. 1. More backswing extension. Start the swing with the upper trunk and feel the left shoulder stretch and the ribcage wind up. You probably have more in you than you're using. 2. Create more handle torque in transition by going for a "hard catch" where the change of direction kicks the club back into your hands as your hips make an aggressive move forward and left (while staying deep). Try to feel a second stretch of the left side. 3. Snap the hips as fast as you can into and past impact while releasing the energy that has been stored up in the hands, just like you feel when you make a hard throw with a low sidearm motion.

    When I started playing golf (50 years ago) my Instructor said I had to play all shots from an Open Stance. When I mildly objected he told me firmly "if its good enough for Harry Vardon its good enough for you". The only thing I would add is a Tip I got from Tony Jacklin. When you feel the weight of the clubhead at the top of your swing - Don't go further (in my case a 3/4 Driver Swing short of parallel) He also said if you don't feel the clubhead you're not swinging in Tempo. My original teacher once asked me can I drive my Car in Reverse Gear as fast as I can going forward - I said NO - he said "so why are you trying to do that with your golf swing".

    I think the classic "swing" ala Flick is an easier way to generate decent SS as you get older. The only caveat is to not reverse-c, but to finish nice an upright spine. As it is, no real need for it anyway, the modern ball and clubs do a fine job of launching high enough.

    Thank you Wayne. I’m 55 years old, I love the game of golf so much but my body is beat up pretty good. Too many years shovelling grain and throwing bales of hay on the farm in my early years. I’m 5’10.5 and 220lbs with a big upper body. Great for manual labor, not so much an effective golf swing. I use to be a 10 handicap in my late 30’s. Now more like a 14-15. I discovered the very open stance mostly by luck while down in Palm Springs in 2019. My Back was killing me, but wanted to golf for that was the entire purpose of the golf trip. Anyways, found I started making more solid contact with wide open stance. It actually felt more natural for me and allowed me to fully clear the left side of my body. My question for you is shoulder position. Should the shoulders be square to the stance or to the target? Also, with the driver where do you recommend the ball and hand position be at setup.
    Thank you!

    • @wdefrancesco
      @wdefrancesco  3 роки тому

      Hey Rick: Your shoulders can be pretty much anywhere but closed. When you open your stance a lot you have to be careful with ball position. You should have a set up routine that makes certain where the ball is in relation to your body. I like to keep the ball opposite my left heel but you can experiment with that. I don't like the feeling of pushing my hands forward to line up the club with my left arm so I just let the hands and the shaft sit back a bit.

    Thanks for the video, Wayne. I am trying to go for the open stance. Looking at your video, with an open stance, you are still bringing the club in-to-out. Isn't it opposite to the benefit of open stance? I thought, with an open stance you swing along the target line to get straighter ball flight. Also, how many inches you pull back your left foot? Do you keep the ball at your left in-step for driver before pulling back your left foot?

    • @waynedefrancesco4423
      @waynedefrancesco4423 2 роки тому

      Trying to swing "along the target line" is not a good idea. It's always an arc with the club closing and the clubhead approaching on some kind of inclined plane, which means it's never going straight. I don't promote an in to out path, just a shallowing move that kicks the club flat before it steepens to be more on plane. Ball position and amount if openness are open to experimentation

    Heay Wayne, i started working with this type of swing after watching highlights of Trevino vs Nicklaus match(when they were both seniors). The most interesting effect is improved swing path...the most confusing issue is ball position. Any thoughts on the nuances of ball position for this type of swing?

    Wayne, we are same age and I’m a bit beat up myself… I’m working on the same set up to pre-open my body at impact.
    My question is, do align my shoulders along the line of my feet and just throw the club out along the target line or align my shoulders a little right (right handed player) of my feet? Thanks.

  • @ScottyPeabody

    Are you able to work the ball right to left at all from that position (as much as we can given how straight most of the golf balls fly & anti-twist shafts & heads will allow)?

    • @wdefrancesco
      @wdefrancesco  4 роки тому +3

      Sure. When the shaft flattens and approaches from the inside a bit of left wrist flexion and left forearm supination will close the face and a draw can be the result.

      I’m very late here, but this occurred to me - his physical problems started “in college” @ perhaps 20 years of age ? I don’t know, but this seems wrong, in that traditional golf teaching caused a young guy to have back problems. Seems to me to be a problem with the biomechanics of what was being taught as the “ correct” way to swing a golf club. Maybe that is ( or was) what is (or was) wrong…. college-aged young people don’t deserve to be taught stuff that will impair them physically at such a young age.

    Will this swing work for irons as well? if so what would the ball position be? Also are you swinging along your shoulder and hip alignment or down the target line? Thanks.

    • @wdefrancesco
      @wdefrancesco  4 роки тому +1

      Sure it will. Just move the ball back a bit (the setup routine is key to getting consistent ball position) and the flattening move with the pivot crunch should bring the shaft toward impact on plane. I feel like the takeaway is slightly toward my shoulder and hip alignment (a bit away from the body) but the approach is more from the inside where the shaft is just above the right forearm.

    thanks wayne. one suggestion: I love all the insights and analysis but seeing everything in micro bits and pieces is good but would like to see more full swings where you put everything together at the end. For me, only by putting it all together in one swing sequence is the way that I can start "feeling" all that you are saying and integrating. Imagine watching Lee Trevino over and over and you mostly only see bits and pieces of his swing in fits and starts...but there is something about seeing Lee's open stance, then backswing, then transition into the attack sequence where the clubs drops in and eventually through the ball -- all this is what allows all the individual pieces to "soak in" to my mind so that I can then try to emulate the feel of how all these pieces come together. just a suggestion and thanks for your insight and advice. much appreciated

    Where do you play the ball in your stance wood's and iron's?

    • @wdefrancesco
      @wdefrancesco  4 роки тому

      When you start square and then open as much as I'm suggesting (remember that your right foot goes forward and left while the left foot goes back and to the right) the ball will appear more forward than usual. If your stance width is normal and you play the ball off your left heel with the driver and 3-4 inches inside the heel for irons (left of center) you will find after opening correctly the ball will be appear to be closer to your left big toe with the driver and off the heel with the irons. Of course, ball position is worth experimenting with as everyone has different release and impact conditions.

      @wdefrancesco  4 роки тому +3

      If I'm feeling decent and have a good session with a launch monitor I can get it to 105. That still gets it out there enough to compete on golf courses less than 7000 yards long, which means it's either an old style course that maxes out under 7K or I'm playing from one box up. Most club pro senior events are played from 65 or 6600, but the bigger events like the National Senior Championship are more like 68 or 6900. Senior majors are over usually over 7000.

      I wonder why he didn't continue to do that. The square stance is more mechanically sound, while the open stance messes up all the angles and it becomes more about feel. When Sam Snead was asked "how do you fade it?" he replied "I just think fade". (btw- Snead set up well closed, pretty much the opposite of what we are talking about here). That used to be enough of an answer, but now we have to know how every muscle (and be sure to know the anatomical name for the muscle) and joint are moving at every moment. I like to set me feet well open and then eyeball the face and try to aim it to where I want the ball to go. I think that engages you more toward the target than a mechanical moved based on everything being square to the target where you depend on parallels and perpendiculars, which, by the way, is much easier to teach.

    Would you say this works well for heavy/thickset players , like Trevino?

    • @wdefrancesco
      @wdefrancesco  4 роки тому +1

      Yes. Having the left arm move more up in front of the chest offers the thicker players a bigger arc than if the arm tried to go deeper across the chest. Then if the hips deepen and the lower body is able to open more (it's already open more due to the stance) the right arm will have space to approach from on plane or inside with right upper arm adduction, right forearm supination and right shoulder external rotation.

    You are not covering the ball well. The swing is made with the body not the arms. Even Hogan in his later years…70 as a matter of fact…squared the back foot to the target line and opened the front foot to allow for clearing. Seniors would be far better off using a connected body swing….for that matter ALL golfers should. Good luck!
