  • Kendrick Lamar flew all the way from the west coast to celebrate the announcement of the Summer Jam main stage. He sat with Ebro in the Morning for a good conversation on the direction of his latest album To Pimp A Butterfly, performing in NYC, controlling his own music, and also touched on some of the biggest social issues today.

      Micah Loggins And once again, there is no such thing as an instant classic. In order for an album to be classic, universal acclaim from critics and fans isn't the only thing required. What matters even more is its influence after many years. It needs to drop at the perfect time, and it needs to be influental to many artists. So no, it's not a classic. Look at Illmatic for example, people still buy it, and people still list it as an album that influenced them a lot.

  • @mnket
    @mnket 9 років тому +96

    There's a distinct difference in how Kendrick talks now - he sounds much older than his years. He's still only 27, but some of what he says sounds like a 10+ years artist,or even, an older guy who's been through some things.
    Comparing this to previous interviews, even the Nardwuar interview, you can see the maturity. This is what will stand the test of time ultimately. The album isn't a classic (YET!), but the themes and conversations it has sparked, and will spark, must be reward enough for an artist who cares about "doing things right".

  • @jetrocketboy

    I feel like artists like Kendrick, J. Cole, Joey Bad, Wale, Big KRIT, Lupe, etc are really being true to their art and refuse to adhere to what's on the radio. Honestly, people would sometimes include Drake in a comment like this but I don't get. I have nothing against his music but I just can't get with the lyrics, and I know Drake can go into more deep and thought provoking topics

      HipHopObsession kendrick doesnt even lyrically impress me really.. Its just his genuine energy .. His emotions... His ability to hit you with so many different styles. I see his potential to be bigger than he his if he wanted to compromise to just have hit records... Cole.. He makes dope songs.. Good lyrics.. But his energy lacks in his records.. You can only listen to Cole for a little while in small spurts... But together... Kendrick/Cole style matches perfectly... From Jig is up ... Or Temptation... Or Shock the World... Or They Ready ft Krit.. Great ass songs

      IDK either, but I guess what has happened with J. Cole is had a lot of hype around him when he released his first2 to 3 mixtapes that were among the best mixtapes those years, while he did a pretty well job with some featured verses, but he's a bit too hyped up, he's boringly good to decent.

    Love that they've mentioned J. Cole in this interview. When you think of the best of this generation, most of the time they like to say Drake and Kendrick all the time without realizing that Cole is on that level as well. Overall, nobody from this generation is doing what those three are doing and this is very special. We should all appreciate it and live in the moment, cause this will be rare years from now.
    As for Rosenberg, I think Jay-Z & DMX was the last time we've seen two rappers who were "that lyrical and that dedicated to Hip-Hop." You can even argue Lupe Fiasco when he had the popularity and Lil Wayne from that '05-'08 era when he was in such a zone as well.

    You know what've been cool if he decided to go the GKMC 2 route with this album? In "Wesley's Theory" when Dre called and it made me think what if he did the same concept of GKMC in a way but with his famous peers trying to contact him and we hear the voicemails like in GKMC. Like in "U" he's struggling with depression so what if the whole concept was he was going through depression and his famous peers were calling and whatever they said lead us into the next track.
    I love what he did with TPAB but this was just an idea I had when I really dissected this album.
