Ah, the good ol honda element. My parents got one the first year they came out in 03 when i was 10. First car i ever car camped in and it was perfect for it.
I live in northern CA. The area is so RV unfriendly and you answered the obvious question that you can only do this in a personal vehicle that has no suspicion of someone living in it. You're better off staying in Oakland or Berkeley and driving back to the city especially if you have a small RV like a class B type van.
Good stealth! I think of stealth camping in San Francisco as the real acid test: there are so many people living on the streets there, and I would love to (successfully) try to stealth camp there. Ha! funny we were recognized by a lady this morning in SF. Afterwards, V and I were talking and wondering if people recognize our car on the road/ hwy.
I've been full-time urban living in my 93 Dodge Caravan (Nellybelle) for two years in Fort Collins CO and my usual spot is the 7-11 parking lot where I used to work. I plug into the Conoco Gas price sign that runs ten feet parallel to Hwy 287 to charge my devices, aux battery and watch TV on my 32 inch bigscreen. It's also convenient to be able to use my electric space heater but I've got a propane Buddy Heater when I'm away from "home". I recently coined the phrase "urban expeditionary vehicle" for Nellybelle. Feel free to google the phrase in quotes to attest. I'm so used to the hustle and bustle of the city that even though I'm exposed to the the traffic generated by ten gas pumps, a convenience store and a highway LITERALLY ten feet away from my spot, it doesn't bother me one whit. It's a lot quieter than when I was living on the corner of Chelsea and Hyde Park (Google it) in Memphis for a couple months (fifth most dangerous neighborhood in America). The t-shirts hung on crosses in the field across from the auto shop I was holed up in attested to the vulgarity of the place. Good luck. I've got a channel that documents a lot of this if you're interested. Enjoy.
Having worked in the hotel industry MANY years, including SF btw, I can say that the hotels have a lot of security. In SF, the transient population is a big concern and Guests paying high dollar room rates don’t want to see dirty, disheveled people roaming around. So, to not get hassled, one needs to BLEND IN. Keep a low profile, not attract attention, not LOOK “homeless” ... Simple
I find small apartment complexs outside of downtown, park on the street next to it. People think you're visiting a resident. Keep it quiet and dark...no problem
Have you tried stealth camping in Ghirardelli Square? I've left my van there (facing the water) and taken the cable car to points of interest in the city. I think (20 years ago) that parking was good for at least 4 hours during the day - and I don't remember having to pay for it. You've done a great job on becoming invisible on a city street.
hi, new to your channel. can you guys elaborate more on where you usually parked and slept around the bay area? i'm pretty sure you didn't stay in the city a lot.
hi there. We normally do not stay in the city. If we do it would be just outside the city or a more quiet suburban area within the city. We have done outdoor parking garages like at 24h supermarkets, in front of apartment complex because then people won't know if which unit we are staying at. Houses would be pretty easy to guess. We also parked at climbing gyms parking lots A LOT because it's more acceptable among the climbing community.
working on the configuration of how to use my cpap in my E, but it's more of where to put the inverter. Ear plugs and my cpap on makes a sound that reminds me of flying to Europe. Thanks for info,
It's a Phil and Vanessa vlog!!! YAAAASSS! Vanessa, did you get a hair cut? your hair looks gorgeous!!! I'm lovin' it! Thank you guys for the tips for camping in SF. I've always wanted to do that, but it seemed too intimidating before :)
3:58 except for the fact that your car has a curtain, lol🙈 if I had the chance to do this, I would take a photo or even a stock photo of the back seat of the vehicle from the front of the vehicles point of view and blow it up to scale on a visor and place it where the curtain currently is, like a backdrop- so should anyone pass by and glance into the car at night, all they’d see a basic back seat. Maybe even have one for the daytime as well.. Idk.. seems less obvious than a curtain🤷🏼♀️Lol
If it's a hot summer night or warmer day when ya'll are sleeping at night, what do you do when opening the windows isn't enough? Do you ever just leave the car on hours at the time with the AC on sometimes?
I was in my car for 2 mins, i thought i was gonna die. Do u have fan inside. I rolled own the window for 2 inches since i have rain guard. But i cant roll it way down. I have mosquito net too. I cant breathe in my car lol . Help me!!!
Your curtain set up really gives you a lot of privacy. Absolutely no indication that the light was on inside when you were outside, Phil. But for me, having to walk around to trying to find a bathroom in the middle of the night or first thing thing in the morning...that would be a dealbreaker. While I almost never stay in cities (just rural/wild boondocking), if I did I would be thankful for my "On board" options.
The loud noise at night is why I didn't want to live in the city. In San Carlos, up on a hill, it's completely no noise. Parking in the city is also big chance of getting your windows broken. And we all know that happens a lot in San Francisco, even in broad daylight. Wow, I didn't think there was a 50 cent an hour in the city anymore. I thought Crissy Field was the cheapest, and I thought that was a buck an hour and it use to be only on weekends (not no more). I remember when there was no meter at Crissy.
I'm no longer in San Francisco, but I'm sure there are places you can park like in neighborhoods, although parking spaces are a premium and it's best to not advertise you're sleeping in the car because automobile is easily targets for fines in the city, tax fees and fines is a big boom for a broken city. The buses have 3 cameras and it's automated with people in rooms with the video popping up cars parking at times when they are not allowed to park, ie. street sweeping, do not park time zones, etc. The best, easy parking areas is still Outer Sunset (relatively safe), but, I would move it around so it's not too obvious. I paid a friends two hour tow once and it was $950.00. If you wait to pay, it's an added $250.00 per day.
It might pay for you to spend a nigh in a hotel there that has a parking garage learn how they regulate their parking structure and perhaps you could get away with parking in a garage.
I dont know how you guys do it Im in my suv maybe 3 days a week,....in the past it was money problems now its just aimless traveling since I can work off the computer,....But I need a nice hotel once a week and a hostel twice a week
we do rent a nice airbnb with some friends once in awhile. Or sometimes we do use our friend's house for cooking. But we found sleeping in the is really comfortable.
Pool the folks who live in vans and open gated parks that you have security card key entry and have restroom and laundry facilities. For around 40 bucks a month that you can have acess to any gated park in the USA? 😊
I could be wrong on this, but I saw on another website or UA-cam video, that in California, it is not illegal to sleep in your vehicle. But you cannot do it in an RV and your vehicle cannot be higher than seven feet. Supposedly you cannot appear to "camp", but there is nothing illegal about sleeping in your vehicle. Supposedly this was a recent court ruling. No idea if this is true or not.
My wife and I (along with our 10 month old) are looking to move into a van so that I can attend school in the Bay Area. Do you guys get harassed in San Jose? I'm looking to go to De Anza
Never had any problems Lucas. We got caught by a parking lot security once out of the whole year and a half. All he did was just knocked on the window and told us to move. No biggie.
