      There was a comic book series called Jurassic Park: Raptor that had some pretty brutal moments. It was a direct sequel to the origin JP, and I honestly thought it was pretty good at the time. Granted, I was a kid when I first read them, so I may be viewing them with rose-colored glasses.
      I think one of the comics in the series (not sure if it was the same one), contained a short story about dilophosaur eggs getting off of Isla Nublar by way of a large piece of driftwood, which ended up in Central America or Mexico. They grew up, and terrorized a small town. A group of local Latino bikers ended up battling them in the streets. It had a very Cadillacs and Dinosaurs feel to it. I know that sounds corny, but I honestly thought it was a great little vignette, and I think it would make a nice Netflix miniseries or something of the sort.

    I think one of the other things about remaking Jurassic Park to be as graphic as the original novel is the fact that the original movie was much more in line with what Crichton originally wanted. As you've talked about on this channel often, Crichton really only added all the horror elements and graphic imagery into the novel to appease his publishers. His first few drafts of the novel were all about the awe and adventure that children experienced with dinosaurs. So I feel that, considering how you said it was in a way always intended for Spielberg to direct the movie adaptation, Spielberg's decision to go for a PG-13 Rating and severely tone down the graphic imagery was a very deliberate choice to make something more true to a close friend's original vision

It made me remember things like going to the museum in nyc and doing the little Dino digsite they had set up where they let you pretend you were uncovering bones! The casting would probably be different too. Samuel L Jackson would have a bigger roll and would probably say “mother fucker” every ten seconds and the death scenes would have been super gory and drawn out and Quentin Tarantino himself would probably have a minor roll in it as a random dude who gets ripped in half by a T-Rex or his face melted off by Dilophosaurus venom

The way you describe Spielberg's JP horror is interesting to imagine and just awesome even if we know they'd never go that route theatrically. • @ryanfreebody6881
    @ryanfreebody6881 6 років тому +51

    It would have been amazing for me personally, but we must respect the large group of people who can't handle gore.
    If it was R rated, it would have been a big hit given the time it was created, the visuals they had already and compared to what other dinosaur movies we've had before, it would have stood out big time and remembered by the older audiences and I'm sure us at our age now, even before would have seen it and loved it.
    Nothing has been done to the level Jurrasic Park was at, that's another reason why it was such a hit and I totally understand why they didn't go for an R rated version. They see the potential and went for it, put it out to a much wider audience and banked on it, given us in return the much loved sequels.
    But, having the OG Spielberg in charge. People would have still flocked, let's be honest.

      There are some people who think this scene is silly and unrealistic, but the scene is amazing, and people forget that in the book, they explore this more about dinosaurs having DNA from other animals; It's obvious that a tyrannosaurus could not swim, but if it contained crocodile DNA in its composition, for example, just as the tongue of the novel's tyrannosaurus is bifurcated due to snake DNA.

    Screw making these newer JP movies, I want to see that book remake and have it be a dark and horrifying tale. Sure the way they made the original was for the best but shit, a one time remake would be interesting all on its own. I personally think that the original JP was a little soft in the grimdark department and didn't compound the sense of how horrible of a situation that they were in enough. The remake could show more on just how savage these animals could be and show that there isn't anything stopping an easy death for one of them. It could really bring the dreadful feeling of hopelessness and make the audience see the impending doom.

    • @Holret

      I think it would have easily been rated R by adding a few extra dialogue and corpses and the film would have remained the same. Personally, I would have preferred that to show that the film showed these animals belonged to a more brutal era and that as we humans, wouldnt be able to survive.

      SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU DIDNT READ THE LOST WORLD YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED With an R rating it would have been it and the lost world would have been a lot more brutal at the end of tlw the main villain gets GRABED by a trex and dangled over the nest where the babies would jump up and rip parts of him off

    • @davidcolantuono3622
      @davidcolantuono3622 6 років тому +5

      That was sort of depicted in the film version, though instead of at the nest, it was in the cargo hold of the *Venture* (the boat that crashed in San Diego---and a *King Kong* reference). We see Ludlow get grabbed by the adult Rex who then drops him on the floor. He starts to limp away before the adult nudges him back down. Right before the infant Rex pounces on him, we see some blood just below his nose. Maybe not as graphic as the novel depicted it, but it was brutal enough.

      It is possible for it to be a franchise and still R-rated. I mean all the Aliens movies were R, the first 3 Terminator movies were R. Personally, I don't think Jurassic Park would be as popular or made as much of an impact as it is today for the reasons you mentioned. Also, there is an element of "hidden details" in the Jurassic Series that I think makes the violence they do include really work. For example, when the raptors attack the cow in the first film, or when Hoskins gets ripped apart in Jurassic World, leaving the audience to wonder exactly what's going on adds an element of suspense and scariness more than having all the violence visible. It's kind of a "it's what you don't see that scares you most" kind of thing.

    James Cameron wanted the rights to the novel. He later stated that had he gotten them, it would've been Aliens with dinosaurs. I dunno about that. but it certainly would've stuck closer to the novel's tone. Curiously I think had Cameron gotten the rights a lot of the same team members would've been hired. Stan Winston in particular as well as ILM since he'd worked with them on The Abyss and Terminator 2. Personally I would love to see an R rated JP someday....when I am like 46 or something

    I honestly don't know what to say, if it was rated R. All I can think of now is that it would be somewhere between nightmare on elms st and Predator. But that's just me. A spin off would be great, but hard and experience. Especially that Netflix isn't gaining alot now.

      A Nightmare on Elm Street via it's dark yet colorful scenery, dreamlike shadows and hazy lighting, eerie fog, and the almost sinister nature of the raptors. Predator for the unstoppable killing machine that is the T-Rex, perhaps a scene or two of the dinosaurs playing with their food in an attempt to lure out more meat, the jungle scenery. Both for the unnerving sounds these monsters make just out of sight, taunting their next meal.
      Now I want this R film. Maybe if I dwell on it long enough I'll end up having a nightmare about it.

    I (like many) saw this film as a kid and was blown away. This movie still has an impact on my life. Even something as simple as an obsession with Jeep Wranglers. I wanted to be there. I wanted to see what happened after the credits rolled. I suppose seeing and liking the movie so young is why I find it difficult to accept any modern sequels. I've been dreaming up what happened next for so long that I don't think anything Hollywood comes up with could ever live up to my expectations.
    My parents were fortunate enough to grow up when the original Star Wars came out. This is our generation's Star Wars. Great video.

    I think sometimes less is more. The film very effectively keeps the dinosaurs hidden for a while. We are introduced to them piece by piece. This works well because it makes the dinosaurs the stars, Spielberg knew he had very good actors to work with, there are no weak links in the cast. However he's an excellent entertainer and also knew that what people wanted was dinosaurs.
    For example the Transformers francise has about two good films, the first and third ones, the rest are appalling. They make money with good marketing and promotion, crap films can make money. One huge flaw of the Transformers series is to focus on the human characters and (Michael Bay's love of expensive cars ad nauseam, and cast members or hot girls near or in expensive cars) not the Transformers themselves. The character Shockwave is a good example, Shockwave is a fan favourite but has less than two minutes screen time in the third film, he should of been very prominent and had much more time. Other Transformers are affected by the same problem.
    My point is when we watch Jurassic Park we want to see dinosaurs, lots of blood could of detracted from this as dead people are gruesome but get lots of attention.
    Huge gore works well in a film like 'The Thing'. A film like that involves body-horror and flesh-eating, flesh-shaping effects. The Terminator needs examples of gore for the simple reason gore reminds us of mortality, The Terminator means literally The Killer. Those films need bloody death to remind us the Terminator/s are actually a threat and not just a new CGI baddie with a special gimmick.

    If JP was rated R, I think it would've been like Aliens or T2. It'd still be incredibly successful. I also think it could've been a cult classic. Since most modern day parents are more open to what their children see, I think it might've even had the popularity it does now.
    Also, one thing i'd like to point out is the idea of Kenner still making toys for the movie. I'm sure you already know about the rated R franchises that got toylines in the 80's and 90's (Aliens, Predator, etc.), so I think it would've been treated the same way.

    I would love an official JP netflix series that details how they got the park back up and running between JP3 and the opening of JW. I think it can investigate Syngen more, maybe have the whole Syngen Amazon rainforest park explored, with the dino breakouts leaving them thriving in the rainforest (largely unnoticed). I think there is just so so much that the films have left out that could easy be bridged to fill in between the franchise change over from JP to JW. And a cool way to do a season 2 is to pick up the events after the new JW3 movie finishes - because you know it isn't going to tie up everything nicely with a bow! And I really really loved the battle of big rock teaser! I think another one or two of those shorts thrown in between now and the finale will really build up the hype!

  • @supergamer5121
    @supergamer5121 7 років тому +16

    Hm, I think it still would have been revolutionary due to its effects, despite an R rating. It might still be a pop culture phenomena since other R films are still considered classics (the aforementioned Aliens and Terminator movies). Definitely wouldn’t have made as much money, the extreme gore would definitely be off putting to parents considering showing it to their kids.
    It would be interesting to see a faithful adaptation of the Jurassic Park and Lost World books. Seeing as both films took a lot of liberties when making the movies, which basically took key concepts and made their own stories with them. Would be interesting to compare them to the movies we got.

    Jurassic Park (both novel and film) are my favorite novel and film respectively. I was ten when it hit theaters and begged my parents to let me see it. They finally caved and took my family. It never would have happened had the film been rated R. That said, I wouldn't mind a more faithful adaptation to the novel. The book (and its sequel) are each nearly 400 pages and I always wanted to see them break both books in half and release four R-rated films that closely resemble the novels with each two-hour film depicting around 200 pages of each novel. It'll never happen, but the kids that grew up on the original films would love it.

  • @lucasaimar6427

    Greetings from Argentina. Yes, sir. I totally agree. I was 8 when JP came out, and I'm so thankful my parents allowed and even encouraged me to see it. Before watching it I was so afraid of T-Storms that could not sleep at night; after watching that T-Rex in the rain, I eagerly awaited the next T-Storm. It is to this day that I get the most rest during a storm. At 12 I went to The Lost World Avant Premiere and even got to talk with Jeff Goldblum, ah what a nice memory, thanks. Back to this video; Michael Crichton gives a lot of information to let the reader get a true grasp of the story, he does the same with every novel to make our imagination terrify us (The Andromeda Strain comes to my mind) without actually seeing. Spielberg shows us a lot more but gives space to the imagination as well, our imagination will lead us to a more terrifying outcome if we let it. Take The Lost World's Compy attack where you see the start and middle, but a light one. What happens behind that tree trunk we don't see, but we let our imagination thrill us and scare us, and that blood running downstream... oh my!!! Some things are better left untold. We need to imagine things, use our brains some, we might go stupid otherwise. Very nice vids, keep up the good work.

    I'd really like to see a Netflix series of Jurassic Park, but not rewritten, just a sort of spinoff series that happens alongside/before/after the movies. Something like what Agents of Shield was to The Avengers movies.
    I actually think they could make it very well and keep up the high standard by two things:
    1) Use animatronics like they used to. The great thing about these, is that they can be re-used easily in multiple episodes. They can just top it off with some light cgi work to make the animatronics shine that little bit more and really come to life. It would be much easier long term than having a full cgi team work hard on every episode.
    2) It would not need to have these major set pieces like in the movies. Instead, they could revolve around expeditions or smaller camps etc, or maybe make use of some of the existing set pieces from the movies to tie them together even further.
    I think a series would be an epic way to keep life in the Jurassic Park franchise between the making of the movies. It could keep people interested in the lore, and introduce more characters and dinosaurs that otherwise would take up too much screen time in the movies. Now that I think of it, I have no idea why this isn't a thing yet. Series like Terra Nova, Primeval, and The 100 are popular, and they have a similar style as a JP series could have, so there could even be a big viewer base lurking outside the existing JP fanbase.
    Where can I find a petition for this series to be made? I need to sign something now ! :D

As for your question about the hard R rating on the original, I'll just say I'm incredibly happy we ended up with the movie we got. I think if it was a movie that hadn't been made UNTIL now, it probably would be R rated, given the source material . To me it feels sort of like the era of book adaptations and gritty reboots after all.

      I totally agree that it would have contradicted Alan's point that the raptors are more closely related to birds. I have a question though. Why wasn't bird DNA used instead of frog DNA? It would make much more sense considering that the whole bird connection is stated so early in the film.
      Also, I wish they could have fleshed-out Nedry's motivations a bit more clearly for the people in the audience who are not familiar with the reason Nedry was going to Biosyn.

    I can't explain how much i love this franchise, and how much i appreciate the content you make! (The stop motion old school explanations kept me staring at the sceeen with open mouth, my GF needed to kick me out of it)
    So HELL YEAh any new content will be seen, looked for Easter eggs and play out the nostalgic cord BUT- and that's exactly why it should've been made by someone who's a fan and not only offering a more gore approach.. although- i would love to see just a clean remake of the first movie, added with added gore and new scienery add in between them, and the upscale needed for the 4k transfer more smoothly.. (especially in the dark blak areas- that was part of the cover for the lack of the technology at that time)
    And i have to agree with you on the rating fan audience potential-
    Lets just put it this way- i watched Jurassic park on 5-6th grade after major convincing to my parents that i will survive, still- couldn't sleep and had nightmares and imagined a Trex showing up at the window- but it was worth it!!
    30 years later- Watched it at least 50 times and i have a 1.5m original trex replica in my living room 😆
    P.S
    Red the book both in Hebraw and in english, and the english version was moch more gory and descriptive then the Hebrew one..

    Carnosaurus (sp?) Was rated R and came out the same year and was a flop. Granted it wasn't directed by Spielberg and didn't have the budget it had, but it was an R rated dinosaur movie which spawned 2 more films. So I honestly feel if directed by Spielberg with the same budget and same special effects it had but rated R, it would still be considered a classic BUT no doubt would've suffered at the box office, I'd say anywhere from 300 to 400 million. I haven't I found both your channel and Terrordome's channel like 10 years ago already this is some real good shit it's blowing my mind. And I'd pay money to see hard R version of the film even tho ik they wont cuz it'd hurt them financially.

    Something else I just thought of. In the first Jurassic Park film, Alan Grant tells a very graphic depiction of a Raptor's hunting tactics to a boy at the digsite early on in the film. Included in this depiction is the mention of a Raptor slashing across one's belly, *SPILLING HIS INTESTINES.* That's much like the novel version of what happens to Dennis Nedry, though from a Dilophosaurus instead of a Raptor. And, this is in a PG-13 film. Had it been rated R, I don't think it would be much different, though I'm sure a bit more on-screen gore would have been shown.

      @KlaytonFioriti  7 років тому

      Totally! Dr.Wu also gets his stomach slashed open by a raptor and the dinosaurs eat him alive so I think thats something we may actually get (not as graphic) in a future Jurassic World hopefully!

    First and foremost. A pleasure to meet you my fellow Jurassic Park fan! And secondly. Thank you for taking the time to make this fascinating video.
    I know this has been a question that has been on the minds of the most dedicated fans of the novel ever since it's release back in 1990. It's a fair one at that. I can not blame those who were (and still are) such mega fans of the book to be so dissatisfied with the film adaptation that came out. I understand where they are coming from in a sense. Not because I am a fan of microscopic descriptive graphic/bloody content. On the contrary. In fact I confess to being quite a pansy. (Insert shame face here)
    However I know what it is like to see a novel you love so dearly be altered drastically. To the point it doesn't even feel like it holds any relation to it's source material. So everyone out there who is angry about the film adaptation's censorship and massive edits. I get it. And could never blame you for holding onto your anger over this franchise. I grasp from your perspective why it feels like you were let down. And why so many still wish for a faithful film adaptation to happen at some point.
    Now that being said. As a person who grew up with the film and didn't even read the book til her mid-20's. (Yeah, as a sensitive pansy it was quite a struggle to push through) I truly love the film as it is! Now I didn't catch it on the big screen back in 1993. I was too young and found the trailer alone too intense to watch. But later found myself addicted to it once my parents purchased the VHS.
    This wasn't a kiddie phase either. I'm almost 30 and this remains a huge favorite of mine. In fact, when I heard that Universal Studios was going to re-release it in 3-D in 2013 for it's 20th anniversary. I WAS ECSTATIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the best days of my life was catching it at the cinema. And I have to say. The 3-D effects were pretty great overall.
    I love that Steven Spielberg and his creative team designed an atmosphere of terror. Without it ever having to go explicit. Then again, as I confessed before. I'm very mainstream. So the techniques to create the dread of being stalked and/or eaten alive by prehistoric predators without having to show the details was perfect for me. It was thrilling and frightening without pushing the envelope. That day at the cinema of it's re-release was a day I cherish. This movie really is that special to me. So I commend the filmmakers for everything they did.
    Now some people love their films unfiltered and uncensored in every shape and form. To them, creating imagery of content that is pretty much unbarable to watch is what makes it so honest. PG-13 or less makes it feel watered down. If not outright cheesy.
    I have never been one to be apart of a group who wishes to discourage filmmakers and screenwriters from pushing boundaries. On the contrary. I believe that is an artistic right. As long as the rating is properly enforced. Why shouldn't they be allowed to go as far as they desire? So if that led to somehow a filmmaker in the future earning the approval of the Crichton estate to remake Jurassic Park into a genuine faithful film adaptation of the novel. I would say congrats to the film's creative team and all the novel fans.
    Would I go see that film? No thank you. It's just too much for me to handle.

      Red - Then I foresee a bidding war between filmmakers Lars von Trier and Pascal Laugier happening.
      With their resume. I'm sure they'd be thrilled to take it on and happily shake the world to it's core. It's what they thrive on.
      But I'm with V- Pony on this. Mainstream movie goers are not even ready for an adaptation of this franchise rated R. An NC-17 edition?
      I honestly think only a tiny fraction of people would legit sit all the way through on their own accord. I can't even see a large chunk from the art-house/indie movie circuit willing to agree to this.
      But hey, since when has a small turn out ever stopped brash filmmakers from pursuing their dreams?

    haha dude we were just talking about this last week, I didn't realize you made this as a video. Good "What if" man. Exactly! a big impact on my passion for earth science and becoming a geologist were things like space, animals, and dinosaurs. Dinosaur movies, which lead to dinosaurs toys and games and eventually expanding curiosity of dinosaur textbooks ect. Much like John Hammond said in his first appearance "Jurassic Park is for everyone to enjoy" (13 and older or accompanied by a legal guardian lol)

    You probably might know this information, but Jaws was originally going to follow its novel more closely, with the exception of changing the characters to make them more likable. However, the reason to why it didn't end up doing so was because the animatronic shark built for the film would constantly break down. Because of this, the filmmakers did other ways of showing the shark such as showing only its fin out of the water and doing underwater shots. This changed the movie from being a horror film to more of a suspense thriller.

    Carnosaur, despite all its flaws, is pretty entertaining due to its level of dark gritty gore.
    Dinosaurs Attack! needs an adaptation like you described. Tim Burton needs to get off his ass and hire a director that can handle that level of sci-fi horror.

    • @chaoticiannunez2419
      @chaoticiannunez2419 7 років тому +4

      Actually, did you know That Carnosaur was based on a book? It predates the JP novel by seven years. It also dealt with genetically engineered dinosaurs although the setting was in England. The film and the movie had very little in common and in fact the author John Brosnan (pseudonym Harry Adam Knight on the cover of the book) was less than pleased about it. It was a somewhat trashy novel (compared to the JP books anyway) but overall a good read. Highly recommended. And definitely better than the movie. And yes I love the movie and it's sequel (which was a total Aliens rip off)

    I'm not sure if they should go for the hard R, but there's definitely opportunity to do what would be titled "Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park" - where at least in terms of story events and outcomes, follows much more closely to the books. I was actually really disappointed with how they strayed from the second book. The scene with Dodgson in Jurassic Park was really memorable, and bringing him back and expanded with his Biosyn cohorts would've just felt natural and had a more direct-feeling follow-up from the first movie.

I wish they would make a stand alone film following both books (maybe a two part film to get it all in) it would be one totally epic and I wouldn't really see it as a cheap easy quickbuck remake,I'd watch it as a separate film but also like a new chapter to the whole story.

      I think it's not necessary to show everything. In the book there was much happening on the mainland and that was creepy; great! I would love to see a movie or a miniseries totally based on the book, a miniseries would be better as there is so much stuff happening in the book that time vice a full 6 hours of show might work.
