Great review! As you can see by my own watch review videos, I own the Omega Trilogy Railmaster and with that being said, here are a few ways that this San Martin is BETTER than the original: 1) superior water resistance: 100m instead of 60 2) screw down crown instead of push/pull 3) 20mm lug width instead of 19mm 4) brushed lug tips instead of polished 5) wider, better proportioned bezel 6) darker dial color which makes it easier to read. 7) lumed Arabic numbers! 8) lollipop seconds hand is easier to read than the non-luminous needle seconds hand of the Omega 9) 47mm lug-to-lug is slightly more compact than the 48mm LTL of the original. 10) great price! Of course the original is superior in its a-magnetic movement, but San Martin “corrected” many of the things that bother me about my Railmaster. Thanks for posting!
Thank you very much for your comment! I never thought that an Omega owner would actually agree with my point of view on this one! Thank you for adding more points of comparison from your own experience, this is priceless. Heading over to watch your videos now 😊
Thank you for the thorough review. I just purchased this watch and am waiting for its arrival. Ive had messages with the seller and i have figured out that the watch will fit a wrist to just a bit over 7". My wrist is 7 1/2" so i had to order 2 extra links from the seller at my expense. Something to keep in mind for those with larger wrists. The cost for the 2 extra links plus shipping was only around $10, so well worth the price. I look forward to receiving my watch.
I'm happy to hear that there's a solution for the bracelet length. I just wish they'd put it on a longer one to begin with... Congratulations on your new watch, I'm sure you're going to love it!
Very nice watch mate! As much as I love Omega, they have a tendency of having too many parts of the watch polished. So the brushed upper lugs of this San Martin are certainly a good thing. However, I wish they would use their imagination a little more and extend the brushed surfaces to the outer bracelet lugs and finally: a more inspired font for the dial inscriptions such as "Automatic".
Aviv, this is a wonderful watch, described and judged in a wonderful, clear and to the point review. My only dislike for this and other SM watches is the overbearing logo. I don't like sterile watches, and a beautiful logo can (it seldom does) improve the look of a watch, but this logo is just too much for my taste. It would not be a dealbreaker, but it is just too massive and, despite its size, illegible. Anyway, it's a beautiful watch, especially with the brown strap/yellow stripe, you are showing . Cheers !!! Life is Good ! 🤙🤙 🤙 .
I just picked up one of these a week ago for $215. USD and I'm very impressed with it. Totally agree with you that the brushed case is a preferable finish to the original all-polished style. (I'm not saying it's "better than Omega," just that I prefer brushing to high polish.) It's a great size and I'm getting a perfect fit with the bracelet, with no weird link jamming. I've owned a few San Martins in the past, all were great but I tend to tire of homage watches like San Martin quickly & flip them - but for now I'm really enjoying this simple 3 hander watch.
I have an 8" wrist and I had to order 2 additional links. I was able to purchase extra links from the seller after I got the watch. Also, I do have the issue with the links getting kinked and they wont always lay flat.
Hey Aviv. I really like the brushed finished. Not sure I’d like it if it were all polish. I just bought my first hidden butterfly clasp ( for a different watch), what you mentioned about the fit is exactly why I’ve stayed away from them until now. Hopefully it’ll work out. One thing to take a chance on a bracelet, another to take a chance on a whole watch. Great review.
You are absolutely right Eric. The hidden clasp does look cool, but the gamble on wether it fits you or not is a turn off. Luckily it fits me just fine so I'm happy with this purchase 😊 Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts!
Im glad you like it Aviv. Tbh im not a SM fan, some homages i own have their own spin for the design but thats not the main reason. I just cant get passed the fact they're using nh35 and not nh38. I know its ok and many other brands do that as well. But me personally would rather have an appropriate movement to the appropriate watch. If they would only do the extra step it would justify their prices. I dont mean to shame or disrespect any SM owners but ill stick to other brands for now. Ohh btw the new ORIGINAL gmt design they have is gorgeous! Their best imo. Unfortunately i dont want a gmt.. 😔
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment your opinion, Sivan! I honestly don't mind the ghost date position that comes with the NH35, as one more click doesn't effect my experience. I think their quality and what their watches have to offer are good enough to "swallow the pill". NH35 is much more common and allows them to put more watches out there in reasonable prices.
I pulled the trigger on the Watchdives version of this which swaps out this railmaster dial for an Aqua Terra inspired dial (think it's SN0113W v2). Damn it looks gorgeous. Can't wait for them to ship it to my door. This will be my first experience with a butterfly clasp. 7" wrist so the bracelet should fit. If I can't get a good sizing I might stick it on a mesh bracelet or dark blue FKM rubber strap.
As an engineer, the Railmaster and the Milgauss are very sought after watches in our profession. Its a shame that they are so expensive but this is a very good alternative! The strap is the only thing that might be a problem for my 8" wrist and I am not fond of the clasp...I prefer fold over clasps with micro adjust options... That being said this watch is beautiful! Hope you have a great day Aviv!
Someone commented that they ordered extra links from the seller so apparently there's a way around the bracelet issue... I would really love to own a Railmaster, but this San Martin is good enough for now! Thanks for watching and have a great day too 😊
@@johanvandersandt8904in addition to asking for additional links you can probably also order another bracelet from San Martin ... and they also now sell a glidelock - doesn't hurt to ask if it would work.
SM watches are well made and well finished. The only gripe, but it's a major one for me, is that the black dials are almost all a dull dark grey / charcoal. I have just kept the very dark blue Rolex-something homage SM.
Go for a SM with an enamel dial - they are very dark and glossy. Also look at the Watchdives store, who tweak San Martin watches with different dial options. They did this case with an Aqua Terra dial instead of the dial featured here. I ordered one today (white dial) so can't wait to see how it goes.
A handsome, classic style watch, but why, on a Swiss homage, use an NH35? A PT5000 or similar higher beat movement would be much preferred, especially over 200 USD.
SM have so little competition when it comes on quality and value for the price. Even the Omega is on another universe, maybe it’s not worth the x price compared to this SM but if you like the Omega and can afford it go for it.
Great review 👍. I've seen this watch before and not liked it, I'm not a fan of the original, particularly the hands. Then half way through, you showed it on that two piece khaki nylon strap.......WOW it looks fantastic, the lume colour looks great with that colour and the brushed case 😍 . They should bin the bracelet and just sell them on that strap!
The railmaster is a wonderful watch, in my mind it has only one negative which as you highlighted is all polished....i prefer the opposite and would choose all brushed finish everytime....the only concern i have on here is the clasp, i really dont like butterfly clasps, not a deal breaker just whip it off straight away....just focusing on the watch itself, its an absolute winner....id happily add one to my collection....🏴⌚🏴⌚
Great review and I've just recieved mine. 7 1/4 inch wrist, one link removed and it fits perfect. I'd like to know where you got the alternative steel bracelet and the straps you showcased. Thanks
The bracelet is from a random eBay seller. The khaki nylon one is sold by San Martin, the black rubber one is from DIY Watch Club and the NATO style one is from CNS watch bands. Thanks for watching!
Read the comments, someone wrote that they asked the seller to buy extra links separately. Turns out you can, so that's a way around it if you really want this watch 😁
Broooo I was really keen to see this one because I really expected to totally disagree but man I'm shocked. I actually agree. The brushing and that chamfer is stella and a much better fit for the type of watch (field) watch. Love the review as always.
Nice watch. But I wish they would have removed the logo and text on the dial. Or at least made it a different color that matches the patina of the indices.
I’m not normally a fan of San Martin but I like the look of this bit pricey but I think if they drop a bit in the sale due shortly it will offset the extra charges to the UK
Great watch, have one, like this one. Only problem the bands only come in Hobbit size, normal dutch wrist is 24 to 25 cm, San martin sells 19 cm. Tried to buy some extra links, San Martin does not want to sell those...How hard can it be?? Customer service any one? So NATO?
