Most common source of bore scoring and why the nr. 6 cylinder is affected, has to do with cooling, the original thermostat opens to late, and the nr. 6 cylinder is the last wolf in the cooling chain..... i m not an expert and there is lot of information on bore scoring problems on the internet. I have used my 997.1 3.8 as an research laboratory the last 6 years, i installed the third radiator and Low.temp. thermostat when i bought the car in 2015 with 62000 miles on the clock, unopened engine, i have since abused the car hard on track and on the german autobahn, my OCI at 6000 miles, the car have now passed 105000 miles, i have done oil analysis at every oil change, almost no wear metals, and consistent readings across the board, aluminium have stayed low at 2 to 3 PPM . Experiment continues ! Awesome Project 997 DAD ! You got yourself a new subscriber !
Repairing a Porsche engine and drinking German beer . This job is done in style. Well done so far and I wish you a lot of success. Saludos from a German 997 owner in Panama/ Central America.
Nice experience you are sharing. Take your time when putting it back together. You only have one go this time... looking forward to following the next ones!
Hi 997 dad i have just taken on 07 977 4s and it's starting to show some symptoms and i am enjoying your work and iam fully prepared for What s to come .it's the only way of getting a 911 for my self
I really admire the work you are doing. I did a similar project with my son 35 years ago on a 914. He was 15. I am considering getting a 996 and your project is removing some of my hesitation. What service manual(s) are you using?
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words 🙏. I used the Porsche service manual (you can dl from links the many 996 997 forums). The build of the engine cannot be done with the service manual though. I'd recommend Jake Raby's video class. About $600 on Amazon. Worth every penny as he will save you more than that in tips and shortcuts. A boxer engine is one of the hardest engines to reassemble. Lots of gotchas. You'll see some in my upcoming videos.

The wake of a tragedy. Dreams, deceit (fraud) ruin - recast into aspiration. Conquer the machine. Dad will not fall
I like the poetic summary. Maybe they'll cast Ryan Reynolds in the movie version. Oh wait this is the movie version 😂
Looks like cylinder 6 had bad fuel injector probably dumping too much fuel bcz piston been washed off
This is a theory, but fails to explain why cyl 6 has the highest fail rate, all else being equal.

You shouldn't be levering those machined cases apart with a pry bar, you will damage the machined faces.
Yup. I got lucky.
