It's nice to see a young person liking some of my favorite music. The 70s and 80s were full of great new music and I saw soo many great shows and loved getting surprised by great new music.
This channel is a real treat. Theres a british band called Scars - their album Author , Author is one of my favourites from this era. Did you mention Gun Club? The Polices first 3 records are smash as well. And the latest Beach House album Once Twice Melody is amazing - reminds me of Cocteau.

I was a building manager in Manhattan and IRS was a tenant that defaulted on their rent. I was able to go thru their inventory and take what I wanted. I took two of every LP and 45. I had a load of British punk. I was always lucky in that respect. Any fans of The Dictators first LP :The Dictators Go Girl Crazy?
@THE LONDON LOU EXPERIENCE The Dictators may have been the first New York punk band playing pure punk In 1975. They booked CBGB before The Ramones. Their first LP was legendary, the others were more metal due to having a connection with Jimmy Boners who helped produce The Blue Oster Cult. Just groove to the first LP " The Dictators Go Girl Crazy" it's all about haircut and attitude. "Crushing in my daddy's car doing my homework in the bar" "four white boys playing with toys" "we knocked them in Dallas, they didn't know we were Jews". Your right they are a fun band with major attitude!
Yeah. But surely most actual Punks were very annoyed to be teens in the late 70s to early 80s? We liked some of the music but at the time we mostly hated those years. It's WHY we were punx. Just imagine having everyone ELSE at your school listening to Chicago, Steely Dan, The Eagles. Or at their most experimental- Blondie, Meatloaf or The Police? While the punks, in most schools greatly outnumbered, sat in the corner of the senior common room sharing mangled cassette tapes of The Clash, The Ramones, Iggy Pop, Devo, Pistols, Buzzcocks,SLF, The Undertones, The Members. Plus some of the bands she's mentioned like Joy Division etc, on a crumby pre ghetto blaster tapedeck. To the derision of the others pumping out their Bob Seger or Billy Joel on the school sound system. I wouldn't mind going back again but I wouldn't want to stay there! Just as I can understand a kid not wanting to stay forever in the Covid / Post Covid era to hear a few good songs. 70s was otherwise beige. 80s - inane greed.
Loved the editing on this one with the zoom ins to make it feel like you had two cameras on you. The album falling in the background was pretty funny and I can't tell you how many times I have had that happen to me. As with any of you videos, you're always exposing me to new things as your are two or three levels deeper than most anyone one the post punk side. Your number two and three bands were ones that I had never heard of. I will have to look into Magazine and the Sound. I remember you featuring the Sound before but I still haven't checked them out. I think I mentioned it before but I love the cover to their Jeopardy album. Before this started, I was wondering where Echo and the Bunnymen were going to fall on the list. I honestly expected them to be your number one but boy was I wrong. Gang of Four has to be on everyone's list. Glad you mentioned Suicide's first album. I love that record. I was also happy to see Devo, the Talking Heads, the Cure, and Bauhaus mentioned. It really would be hard to order any of these bands. An Italian pressing??? Italian pressings of anything can be a bit of a rarity because the Italians generally destroyed any record that didn't sell so older issues of anything are a rarity. Loved this video Hanna.
I also discovered Magazine and The Sound "later" in life and they are both brilliant. For The Sound you can't go wrong with Jeopardy, From the Lion's Mouth, and Propaganda. Love Magazine's first 2 albums especially, Real Life and Secondhand Daylight, both of which were featured by Hanna.
Hey Paul! Thanks, being trying to use a little bit better technique for my editing skills. Of course, nowhere near your level, but baby steps! I love the Sound's "Jeopardy" album cover as well! Fits the feel of the album, too. Yes, I tried doing a top 20 and putting them in order, but it just didn't work out, so I settled on 5 and then did the rest in no order! It took the pressure off that way, hehe! That Italian Double 12" from a Certain Ratio sounds so good! I think that one was released in '81. I think I'm behind on your last 3 videos now. I certainly will be catching up!

Post punk, my absolute favourite genre! The Sound, Chameleons and Joy Division are my top 3. There's quite a few other underrated post punk bands, I recommend you check out these albums.... I absolutely love this video and your amazing collection. You show a lot of my favorite post punk bands (The Comsat Angels, Pere Ubu, etc.) and even a couple I still haven't heard of. I agree with you about some people labeling Television as post-punk. I would almost consider them more of a proto-punk band as they did influence a lot of later punk and post punk bands, but they are one of those groups where genre classification is a bit fuzzy. As far as my own favorite post-punk bands, I would have to mention A Silver Mt. Zion which is an offshoot of Godspeed You Black Emperor. Even though their first album was more post rock (mainly because there are few vocals), once they started to introduce vocals, they tended to come out more as post punk with their unpolished instrumentation and singing. I recommend their albums "Horses in the Sky" and "13 Blues for Thirteen Moons". I also love Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Gene Loves Jezebel, Japan, The Residents (again, they could be considered proto-punk maybe?), Scratch Acid and so on. Great video and excellent picks!

Hanna - Young Marble Giants (from Cardiff) their one and only album 'Colossal Youth' (1980) is a classic together with the 'Final Day' and 'Testcard' EP's. Stuart Moxham of the band went on to form The Gist ('Embrace The Herd' LP - 1982) all excellent. Swell Maps 'A Trip To Marineville' (1979) and ...In 'Jane From Occupied Europe' (1980) also brilliant👍

There's the Live At The Hurrah DVD included too😎 I was 15 years old when the orig Rough Trade LP came out, bought it and rapidly became obsessed😅 One more Hanna, I never really thought of them as post punk but 1980's band Felt were fantastic. I have The Splendour Of Fear on as we speak (1984 - Cherry Red)😎

Speaking of enlightenment, I want to say that one important reminder I get from your vids is that a band can fall into several different genres over the course of its career, or even on the same album, so one shouldn't let genre labels limit your listening interests. One should always be open to new stuff. It might be more enjoyable - and familiar - than you think. Looking forward to the next one!

My first Magazine album was 'the Correct Use of Soap' which had "Song from under the Floorboards" on it, one of my favorite songs. You have inspired me to look for more albums by the Sound & early Adam Ant. [BTW, not many people are hip to Red Lorry Yellow Lorry; congrats!]

Wow, Hanna. What a collection of brilliant bands you covered! And I will definitely be checking out Chameleons and Au Pairs. As for The Sound, definitely check out the album Propaganda. 1979 recordings released in 1999. It is what Warsaw is to Joy Division, a more raw version of The Sound. You did perfect on the pronunciation of Pere Ubu. If you like them, check out Rocket From the Tombs and their album Barfly. Features Pere Ubu's David Thomas. As for New Model Army, they are one of my all time favorite bands. They got much, much better after those two early albums you featured. Better production, better songs and lyrics. And they have a lengthy and diverse discography. They really started to blossom on the album Ghost of Cain. Would also recommend their crown jewel Thunder and Consolation, Impurity, Today is a Good Day, and Winter. Winter has some dark themes and has thunderous drums and bass throughout. 154 is my favorite from Wire, but I also really dig The Ideal Copy. Also wanted to give a shout out to Joy Division's great collection of songs,, Substance. Lastly, Devo's second album Duty Now For the Future often seems to get overshadowed by the debut but is so creative and unique. My favorite from them. Sorry to ramble on. Thanks again Hanna!

Hi Hanna, I think Post punk continued the revolution of punk but was a reaction to punk itself too. It established punk as art and social expression, while at the same time going against it, and in the process created someting unique and different. It's the best and most influentioal rock genre in my opinion but even went beyond rock, influencing the electronica and latin rock movements in the 90's as well as other 90's and early 2000's rock genres like early indie, grunge, shoegaze, brit pop, alternative metal. Goth, Industrial, new pop and synth pop could be consider sister genres or part of it. The genre really never died inspiring second and third post punk waves like the one in the early 2000's. Maybe talkin about PP could inspire record companies to reissue some of this stuff like the Chamelons, the Fall, the Sound, Wire etc, so yes we need more videos like yours, it's a good thing you are making this cause I still see a lot of people raving about classic rock like the MoFi people, the prog fanatics or the audience for the Sea of Tranquility channel. I think a lot of those people still don't understand what post punk is. I have a theory why some rock people might not like it, could be that the emphasis of the music is on the rytmn section insted of, on the vocalist and lead guitarist, the lack of traditional solos or the weird keyboard and guitar noises in the back, who knows. Also the bass player and the keyboards drives the melody of the song in many cases and the rythmin is based on non rock music like reggae, funk or world music. For example Roberth Smith has said he gets inspired by gregorian and buddhist chants, Gang of Four is almost pure funk and Suicide or Throbbing Gristle sounds like disco from hell :). Well I'll stop right here or you won't read it all lol.

I love the driving bass lines in post punk especially. So many styles coming together for this glorious genre!

Great video! I would say my top post-punk bands are Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Cure, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, and Chameleons. Other favourites: DA!-Female fronted band from Chicago; Volcano Suns, Swell Maps. I would also have you check out new bands: False Brother, and Lowlands-Lover's Blessing LP. Lowlands have a fantastic Sister's Of Mercy vibe.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert it is one of my treasured teenage memories of walking out of a record store with the first killing joke album and magazines play, and being rather pleased when I got home to find they were both absolute belters. I saw killing joke twice, the first time in Manchester with Peter Hook in the audience. Amazingly enough, I'm finding some of their very recent stuff really rather good. I might argue that our present times require a punk attitude to the b******* we get on media more than ever.

Have so many of those albums along with fab memories of a great era. My favourite of all is The Monochrome Set. Formed 1978 London first album Strange Boutique. Sardonic lyrics, insane drumming, fabulous guitars, bass, key changes, influences from everywhere. Just brilliant fun.

I consider Joy Division ➗️ / New Order & The Cure to be at a different level. Excellent presentation 👏 ! Killing Joke had songs covered by both Metallica & Foo Fighters & toured with Tool so they are clearly respected by musicians. Robert Palmer was a big Comsats fan & got them a deal on Island 🏝. The resulting album from 1986 Chasing Shadows is quite good. Hope you do a part 2 ! ✌️

I'm a 1990's kid, but when I first encountered Joy Division as a kid, I instantly knew I resonated with them, and Unknown Pleasures is definitely my personal pick for a must listen. This channel is awesome. Subbed.... Entertainment! is also in my daily rotation for the last decade. I think that album deserves a lot more love. It influenced so much of the punk scene, but I feel like it gets looked over, almost tragically. It was insanely ahead of its time.

Very fortunate to have seen Joy Division live, supporting The Buzzcocks, at the Bournemouth Pavilion in 1978. Ian Curtis had an epileptic seizure at the gig and had to be helped off stage and was rushed to hospital. Pete Shelley got very upset and stopped the band mid “Orgasm Addict” to ask the audience to stop spitting at him ! A very memorable gig for me - it was one of the first few I ever attended and has stuck with me for these particular gig events.
I missed out on that. Was living in Portsmouth at that time, but none of my mates was prepaired to make the trip over to Bournemouth, so I thought I'd see them at a later date. Til today I'm still kickin' me ass.

I snagged all the deluxe releases that came out. A couple bands I think is worth mentioning for post-punk/post-hardcore is Quicksand and Fugazi I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these bands for those that haven't heard of them. Fasciinating that you should be listening to music from the late 70's/early 80's. I saw many of these bands way back when. I have some trepidation to go back and listen to some of them again, as I associate many of the songs with that dangerous era. lol Too many memories. It would be interesting as I have changed a bit since then. But I'm so glad that this stuff hasn't been forgotten because it was a great time for experimentation and creativity
Hi Omaha, another superb list of post punk albums. As you mentioned, this genre is not always easy to define and one band that came out of that period that deserve a mention are the Only Ones. Their first two albums are particularly good with great, dark lyrics coupled with Lou Reed- esque lyrics.
Hey Andrew! Love the Only Ones as well and showed their Special View comp in my best vinyl haul video a month or two ago and I also have a fab CD comp of theirs with their 3 albums on it. Peter is like a cross between Lou Reed and Robyn Hitchcock!

I love your videos being that I was in my mid 20's when these LP's came out and was lucky enough to be hanging out at CBGB and other "punk" bars in Manhattan. I thought my love for post punk ended with Wire's Chairs Missing and 154 . I felt that Wire had quickly jumped from punk (Pink Flag) to post punk with Chairs Missing (an album that Eno wanted to produce). But your list made me realize that I continued with post punk due to me buying and loving Magazine, Joy Division and Gang of Fours Entertainment LP. When I was making these purchases I thought they were punk albums, it took years for listeners to realize the change or where punk ended and post punk began. In retrospect I think Wire's Pink Flag was Punk and Chairs Missing was post punk, the addition of producer Mike Thorne had much to do with this as he added synthesizer and took some of Eno's tools to expand the sound of the instruments- Mike was great at filling in the sound between the notes. Again GREAT list and thanks for bringing me back to my youth when everyday was a Saturday .

Killing Joke are all the original members since sad loss of bassist Paul Raven in '06 (I think), leading to original bassist Martin Glover(alias superstar dj YOUTH) rejoining. Still releasing great records!
Raven passed in '07. I was lucky enough to jam with him a couple times when I lived in LA around '99 or so. He had these 2 huge Rottweilers and was the sweetest person. RIP.

Author!’ by a Scottish post-punk band called Scars. Based upon what you have covered in this video and the favourites you cherry-picked, I really think you will love it. Your collection is very impressive and contains so many post-punk essentials ☺️
Pretty comprehensive coverage Hanna. I'd definitely include XTC in there, particularly stuff like Drums and Wires. Two other albums that you may or may not know are Fiction Tales by Modern Eon and Sound-on-Sound by Bill Nelson which are both arguably post punk too

For me post-punk isn't a particular sound as such, it's just by definition 'after punk' and needed punk to have happened to exist. Of course, bands like XTC & Talking Heads even contradict that definition lol. Loved that Magazine were number 2 in your list, what edition of Real Life is that? The cover is different.
Great video about the golden age of post-punk bands, Hanna! For me, Joy Division is my favorite band of all and I think JD, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Devo and Echo & the Bunnymen are the most famous here in Brazil. By the way, nice black shirt from the Liverpool-England band that aren't the ''Fab Four'' but Echo & the Bunnymen. Interesting to watch this and a great list of bands...Some faves of mine would be Big Black, Nick Caves' early band Birthday Party, Cabaret Voltaire, Hûsker Dü (maybe more punk than post punk), Theatre of Hate who later changed their name to Spear of Destiny...they have an incredible songwriter and singer called Kirk Brandon..damn I love his voice, Throbbing Gristle which I would describe as industrial chaos but it makes sense after 20 listens:-)...another one could be XTC, one of my fave bands of all time
Hey Thomas! I showed 2 or 3 Spear of Destiny albums in a video earlier this year I believe. Great band and I love Brandon's voice as well! I guess I always considered XTC more in the power pop realm and I featured them in that series, but they definitely are post-punk as well! Husker Du to me are definitely punk. I'm still trying with the Birthday Party. Chris has a couple of their albums but I'm just not sure I will ever get on board. Cheers!
one reason I love your videos is you seem so much like me! except I was originally collecting most of this music between 1981 and 1983. I had so much fun getting into post-punk and it was still happening during that time, for example I remember ordering Virgin Prunes If I Die, I Die in 1983 from Rough Trade's San Francisco mailorder dept. and on one fave early shopping expedition in December 1981 myself and friends drove up from Sarasota Florida to Clearwater, where I bought Unknown Pleasures, Closer and Red Mecca all at one store! but the story doesn't end there as even today I'm still picking up records I missed, plus doing a lot of gapfilling. for example, I bought those Suburban Lawns and Au Pairs albums (in your display) recently. and even though I've owned From The Lion's Mouth since the early 2000's, it wasn't until this year that I got around to picking up their other releases like All Fall Down & Shock Of Daylight. still need to pick up Jeopardy and to re-buy PiL's Flowers Of Romance, the latter of which which I somehow traded in during the 1980s. this music will continue to thrill for many years to come, especially if you keep exploring all over the musical map so each genre stays fresh. I'm so happy for you :)
Great episode! I am not the biggest fan of post punk, more of a punk fan. With that said, some of the albums you showed are among my all time favorites, like The Sound Jepardy, Magazines debut and The Wire’s three first albums. Totally outstanding stuff. Marquee moon with Television is also an all time fave, but I can’t see them as post punk, but it doesn’t really matter what label is put on a record, if it’s good it’s good. 😀👍🏽

Hey Hanna! Wow! Kleenex! Pere Ubu! Suicide! This is all so great. You got the Ubu pronunciation right (actually I once played the lead and directed two of Alfred Jarry's Ubu plays). This is like a compilation of the best John Peel era. Of course you missed This Heat and The Residents, but that's forgivable, and you mentioned the obscure Tuxedomoon and Chrome, who were on the Residents' label. Snakefinger, a fabulous talent who was never really captured in the studio, was the missing link between all the Stiff acts and the Residents - look out for his live performances, they are amazing. One obscure band which I think you'd love is PragVec - they're so raw and elemental, especially their song 'Wolf'.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert There's too much Residents to explore, but their post punk masterpiece is Duck Stab/Buster'n'Glen, and then Eskimo and The Commercial Album. I'd also recommend Not Available - all these were released from 1978-80. But I should also mention Third Reich'n'Roll, and their version of Satisfaction, recorded in '76 but pure post-punk, in fact an inspiration to many postpunk bands (see the great Cabaret Voltaire from Sheffield, Gand of Four contemporaries. Sheffield was as important as Manchester and Liverpool at this time, but I think it's wonderful that there was such cross-pollination between these northern English cities and places like San Francisco and Ohio). You're so great Hanna!
Howdy, Hanna. That's my planet of sound (though I rarely listen to post punk these days having grown up with its rain-on-concrete smell). Your Fall collection is growing nicely. Wow, you name-checked just about every group that matters. The only bigger acts missing in action I can think of: The Pop Group, Prefects, Subway Sect, Scritti, Skids, Young Marble Giants, Cabaret Voltaire, TG, Swell Maps, Delta 5, Basement 5, 23 Skidoo, This Heat, ESG, The Passions (who I always mention) & ATV (who went good & weird after their debut). I'll be checking out Red Lorry Yellow Lorry though because I haven't heard a note of their stuff. Have you dipped a toe into messthetics? It's a mixed bag - post punk that in most cases never got out of the bedroom. Ciao till next time.

Messthetics is a subgenre, Hanna, & a series of CDs. O Level & Danny & The Dressmakers probably represent its 'biggest' names - & they were obscure enough. It's a ragbag of the bizarre, the inept, the terrible, the badly recorded & the wtf-but-kind-of-interesting.
Fun, informative video, with several choice suggestions for me. Also, the comments on your videos are always great, with good information. I think including Pere Ubu and Devo as "post punk" is a stretch, though. "Pre punk"??? I have always considered them being in their unique corner of the "new wave" world.

I think "Talking Heads 77" is post punk. It was just the four members for that album, but after that all hell broke loose. I was fortunate enough to see them at Oberlin College Finny Chapel in the early winter of 78. Just the four of them....

Many great groups emerged in the post punk era and became the giants we all love. For me the the first two Smiths albums and REM Murmur are amazing and quintessential post punk records.
I guess I lumped the Smiths and R.E.M. in my jangle pop series but there indeed is some crossover into post punk territory as well! Thanks for watching!

A great live album to track down is Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape from Bauhaus. The first four albums from the Cure are their best imho. Mark Burgess did the art for all the Chameleons albums. I always veered more towards melodic power pop, punk, jangle pop, and psychedelia than post punk, but plenty of stuff in here that I like or am curious about. Like you, I have a hard time calling Television post-punk since, chronologically speaking, they are kind of pre-punk? But I can definitely see the musical connection between them and a lot of the moodiness of so much post punk. Whatever genre we want to call it, doesn't change the fact that Marquee Moon is a masterpiece! Enjoyed the video. Thx for sharing it. 🤘✌️

Very nice collection. I haunted record stores in the late 70's/early 80's, and I'm familiar with most of the albums you present. Definite fan of Au Pairs (also had their live album and some singles), Siouxsie (JuJu is my favorite), Wire (really dig "Map Ref. 41° N 93° W"), Gang Of Four, and The Fall. I remember "Metal Box" being quite expensive then. Also listened to Pylon, The Cramps, X-Mal Deutschland, The Passions, Bush Tetras, Mo-Dettes, Microdisney, and many others. And I lived outside of Omaha in the early 70's (Bellevue).

I’m a bit late in responding to your video, but I just had to weigh in. Love the British goth and Post Punk scene from ‘77 through ‘87. Although I’m familiar with The Sound, I don’t own the one you mentioned. I think you’ve sold me on that one. And it’s hard to come by anyone who’s into both Wire and The Fall. Those are my two favorite punk bands ever. I discovered Wire through ‘ 154 ‘ and was blown away by its original, industrial style. Also, I can’t say enough about ‘ Strange Times. ‘ That album is just absolute ear candy and loaded with treasures. The Chameleons are WAY overlooked, as well as ‘ Echo ‘. Love your shirt, by the way. And wow, you’re even into Tuxedomoon ? Your taste is impeccable ! I would be hard pressed to find anyone who digs THAT highly unique act. You’ve impressively covered the whole genre. I’m glad I tuned in 👍.
You can also throw Mission Of Burma into that category. Great band from Boston that reformed in the early 2000s and put out music that was almost as strong as their early 80s work.

@@stevenmccart5455 I saw them once, at the Siren Music Festival in 2002. They impressed me enough to go over to the merch table and add OnOffOn, their comeback album, to the 80s releases I owned. Their whole catalog is good-to-great.

You've covered the ground pretty well on post punk - there's a few others that could be included, two of my favourites I don't think you mentioned are Basement 5, their album 1965-1980 is great, it's basically reggae rock music headed by Dennis Morris, Sex Pistols photographer, get it, if you can find it; and Theatre of Hate, anything by them is good I think, they were quite underrated in the early 80s but I've always liked them... Thanks, I do enjoy punk and post punk nostalgia.

I was a building manager in Manhattan and IRS was a tenant that defaulted on their rent. I was able to go thru their inventory and take what I wanted. I took two of every LP and 45. I had a load of British punk. I was always lucky in that respect. Any fans of The Dictators first LP :The Dictators Go Girl Crazy?
@THE LONDON LOU EXPERIENCE The Dictators may have been the first New York punk band playing pure punk In 1975. They booked CBGB before The Ramones. Their first LP was legendary, the others were more metal due to having a connection with Jimmy Boners who helped produce The Blue Oster Cult. Just groove to the first LP " The Dictators Go Girl Crazy" it's all about haircut and attitude. "Crushing in my daddy's car doing my homework in the bar" "four white boys playing with toys" "we knocked them in Dallas, they didn't know we were Jews". Your right they are a fun band with major attitude!

We liked some of the music but at the time we mostly hated those years. It's WHY we were punx.
Just imagine having everyone ELSE at your school listening to Chicago, Steely Dan, The Eagles. Or at their most experimental- Blondie, Meatloaf or The Police?
While the punks, in most schools greatly outnumbered, sat in the corner of the senior common room sharing mangled cassette tapes of The Clash, The Ramones, Iggy Pop, Devo, Pistols, Buzzcocks,SLF, The Undertones, The Members. Plus some of the bands she's mentioned like Joy Division etc, on a crumby pre ghetto blaster tapedeck. To the derision of the others pumping out their Bob Seger or Billy Joel on the school sound system.
I wouldn't mind going back again but I wouldn't want to stay there! Just as I can understand a kid not wanting to stay forever in the Covid / Post Covid era to hear a few good songs.

Loved the editing on this one with the zoom ins to make it feel like you had two cameras on you. The album falling in the background was pretty funny and I can't tell you how many times I have had that happen to me. As with any of you videos, you're always exposing me to new things as your are two or three levels deeper than most anyone one the post punk side. Your number two and three bands were ones that I had never heard of. I will have to look into Magazine and the Sound. I remember you featuring the Sound before but I still haven't checked them out. I think I mentioned it before but I love the cover to their Jeopardy album. Before this started, I was wondering where Echo and the Bunnymen were going to fall on the list. I honestly expected them to be your number one but boy was I wrong. Gang of Four has to be on everyone's list. Glad you mentioned Suicide's first album. I love that record. I was also happy to see Devo, the Talking Heads, the Cure, and Bauhaus mentioned. It really would be hard to order any of these bands. An Italian pressing??? Italian pressings of anything can be a bit of a rarity because the Italians generally destroyed any record that didn't sell so older issues of anything are a rarity. Loved this video Hanna.
I also discovered Magazine and The Sound "later" in life and they are both brilliant. For The Sound you can't go wrong with Jeopardy, From the Lion's Mouth, and Propaganda. Love Magazine's first 2 albums especially, Real Life and Secondhand Daylight, both of which were featured by Hanna.
Hey Paul! Thanks, being trying to use a little bit better technique for my editing skills. Of course, nowhere near your level, but baby steps! I love the Sound's "Jeopardy" album cover as well! Fits the feel of the album, too. Yes, I tried doing a top 20 and putting them in order, but it just didn't work out, so I settled on 5 and then did the rest in no order! It took the pressure off that way, hehe! That Italian Double 12" from a Certain Ratio sounds so good! I think that one was released in '81. I think I'm behind on your last 3 videos now. I certainly will be catching up!

My favourite Fall album is Slates. (A mini album, actually). Heard it?
I absolutely love this video and your amazing collection. You show a lot of my favorite post punk bands (The Comsat Angels, Pere Ubu, etc.) and even a couple I still haven't heard of. I agree with you about some people labeling Television as post-punk. I would almost consider them more of a proto-punk band as they did influence a lot of later punk and post punk bands, but they are one of those groups where genre classification is a bit fuzzy. As far as my own favorite post-punk bands, I would have to mention A Silver Mt. Zion which is an offshoot of Godspeed You Black Emperor. Even though their first album was more post rock (mainly because there are few vocals), once they started to introduce vocals, they tended to come out more as post punk with their unpolished instrumentation and singing. I recommend their albums "Horses in the Sky" and "13 Blues for Thirteen Moons". I also love Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Gene Loves Jezebel, Japan, The Residents (again, they could be considered proto-punk maybe?), Scratch Acid and so on. Great video and excellent picks!

Hanna - Young Marble Giants (from Cardiff) their one and only album 'Colossal Youth' (1980) is a classic together with the 'Final Day' and 'Testcard' EP's.
Stuart Moxham of the band went on to form The Gist ('Embrace The Herd' LP - 1982) all excellent.
Swell Maps 'A Trip To Marineville' (1979) and ...In 'Jane From Occupied Europe' (1980) also brilliant👍

Speaking of enlightenment, I want to say that one important reminder I get from your vids is that a band can fall into several different genres over the course of its career, or even on the same album, so one shouldn't let genre labels limit your listening interests. One should always be open to new stuff. It might be more enjoyable - and familiar - than you think. Looking forward to the next one!

Wow, Hanna. What a collection of brilliant bands you covered! And I will definitely be checking out Chameleons and Au Pairs. As for The Sound, definitely check out the album Propaganda. 1979 recordings released in 1999. It is what Warsaw is to Joy Division, a more raw version of The Sound. You did perfect on the pronunciation of Pere Ubu. If you like them, check out Rocket From the Tombs and their album Barfly. Features Pere Ubu's David Thomas. As for New Model Army, they are one of my all time favorite bands. They got much, much better after those two early albums you featured. Better production, better songs and lyrics. And they have a lengthy and diverse discography. They really started to blossom on the album Ghost of Cain. Would also recommend their crown jewel Thunder and Consolation, Impurity, Today is a Good Day, and Winter. Winter has some dark themes and has thunderous drums and bass throughout. 154 is my favorite from Wire, but I also really dig The Ideal Copy. Also wanted to give a shout out to Joy Division's great collection of songs,, Substance. Lastly, Devo's second album Duty Now For the Future often seems to get overshadowed by the debut but is so creative and unique. My favorite from them. Sorry to ramble on. Thanks again Hanna!

Hi Hanna, I think Post punk continued the revolution of punk but was a reaction to punk itself too. It established punk as art and social expression, while at the same time going against it, and in the process created someting unique and different. It's the best and most influentioal rock genre in my opinion but even went beyond rock, influencing the electronica and latin rock movements in the 90's as well as other 90's and early 2000's rock genres like early indie, grunge, shoegaze, brit pop, alternative metal. Goth, Industrial, new pop and synth pop could be consider sister genres or part of it. The genre really never died inspiring second and third post punk waves like the one in the early 2000's. Maybe talkin about PP could inspire record companies to reissue some of this stuff like the Chamelons, the Fall, the Sound, Wire etc, so yes we need more videos like yours, it's a good thing you are making this cause I still see a lot of people raving about classic rock like the MoFi people, the prog fanatics or the audience for the Sea of Tranquility channel. I think a lot of those people still don't understand what post punk is. I have a theory why some rock people might not like it, could be that the emphasis of the music is on the rytmn section insted of, on the vocalist and lead guitarist, the lack of traditional solos or the weird keyboard and guitar noises in the back, who knows. Also the bass player and the keyboards drives the melody of the song in many cases and the rythmin is based on non rock music like reggae, funk or world music. For example Roberth Smith has said he gets inspired by gregorian and buddhist chants, Gang of Four is almost pure funk and Suicide or Throbbing Gristle sounds like disco from hell :). Well I'll stop right here or you won't read it all lol.

I love the driving bass lines in post punk especially. So many styles coming together for this glorious genre!

Great video! I would say my top post-punk bands are Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Cure, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, and Chameleons. Other favourites: DA!-Female fronted band from Chicago; Volcano Suns, Swell Maps. I would also have you check out new bands: False Brother, and Lowlands-Lover's Blessing LP. Lowlands have a fantastic Sister's Of Mercy vibe.

I saw killing joke twice, the first time in Manchester with Peter Hook in the audience. Amazingly enough, I'm finding some of their very recent stuff really rather good. I might argue that our present times require a punk attitude to the b******* we get on media more than ever.

Have so many of those albums along with fab memories of a great era. My favourite of all is The Monochrome Set. Formed 1978 London first album Strange Boutique. Sardonic lyrics, insane drumming, fabulous guitars, bass, key changes, influences from everywhere. Just brilliant fun.

I consider Joy Division ➗️ / New Order & The Cure to be at a different level. Excellent presentation 👏 ! Killing Joke had songs covered by both Metallica & Foo Fighters & toured with Tool so they are clearly respected by musicians. Robert Palmer was a big Comsats fan & got them a deal on Island 🏝. The resulting album from 1986 Chasing Shadows is quite good. Hope you do a part 2 ! ✌️

I'm a 1990's kid, but when I first encountered Joy Division as a kid, I instantly knew I resonated with them, and Unknown Pleasures is definitely my personal pick for a must listen. This channel is awesome. Subbed.... Entertainment! is also in my daily rotation for the last decade. I think that album deserves a lot more love. It influenced so much of the punk scene, but I feel like it gets looked over, almost tragically. It was insanely ahead of its time.

Very fortunate to have seen Joy Division live, supporting The Buzzcocks, at the Bournemouth Pavilion in 1978. Ian Curtis had an epileptic seizure at the gig and had to be helped off stage and was rushed to hospital. Pete Shelley got very upset and stopped the band mid “Orgasm Addict” to ask the audience to stop spitting at him ! A very memorable gig for me - it was one of the first few I ever attended and has stuck with me for these particular gig events.
I missed out on that. Was living in Portsmouth at that time, but none of my mates was prepaired to make the trip over to Bournemouth, so I thought I'd see them at a later date. Til today I'm still kickin' me ass.
Great video. Post Punk is my favorite genre. I like all music, but my go to is Post Punk/New Wave. Echo and The Bunnymen are my #1 for sure.

Fasciinating that you should be listening to music from the late 70's/early 80's. I saw many of these bands way back when. I have some trepidation to go back and listen to some of them again, as I associate many of the songs with that dangerous era. lol Too many memories. It would be interesting as I have changed a bit since then. But I'm so glad that this stuff hasn't been forgotten because it was a great time for experimentation and creativity
Hi Omaha, another superb list of post punk albums. As you mentioned, this genre is not always easy to define and one band that came out of that period that deserve a mention are the Only Ones. Their first two albums are particularly good with great, dark lyrics coupled with Lou Reed- esque lyrics.

I love your videos being that I was in my mid 20's when these LP's came out and was lucky enough to be hanging out at CBGB and other "punk" bars in Manhattan. I thought my love for post punk ended with Wire's Chairs Missing and 154 . I felt that Wire had quickly jumped from punk (Pink Flag) to post punk with Chairs Missing (an album that Eno wanted to produce). But your list made me realize that I continued with post punk due to me buying and loving Magazine, Joy Division and Gang of Fours Entertainment LP. When I was making these purchases I thought they were punk albums, it took years for listeners to realize the change or where punk ended and post punk began. In retrospect I think Wire's Pink Flag was Punk and Chairs Missing was post punk, the addition of producer Mike Thorne had much to do with this as he added synthesizer and took some of Eno's tools to expand the sound of the instruments- Mike was great at filling in the sound between the notes. Again GREAT list and thanks for bringing me back to my youth when everyday was a Saturday .

I could've given you original presses Playing with a different sex, Porcupine, the entire Gang of 4 discography ... so much stuff that I had that has so much value now. Whoever bought the stuff I dropped off at the Salvation Army is damned lucky!

Awesome choices. I love that you picked The Au Pairs Playing with a Different Sex, Pere Ubu's The Modern Dance/Dub House and Comsat Angels Waiting for a Miracle/sleep No More. Those three bands are usually overlooked in the post punk lists. Also love so much Tuxedomoon's Half Mute (I've been listening to it quite a lot lately, lol) and Suburban Lawns. One favorite of mine is The Passions first album, Michael and Miranda.

Killing Joke are all the original members since sad loss of bassist Paul Raven in '06 (I think), leading to original bassist Martin Glover(alias superstar dj YOUTH) rejoining. Still releasing great records!
Raven passed in '07. I was lucky enough to jam with him a couple times when I lived in LA around '99 or so. He had these 2 huge Rottweilers and was the sweetest person. RIP.

If you haven’t heard it before and you ever get the chance to acquire it, I highly recommend ‘Author! Author!’ by a Scottish post-punk band called Scars. Based upon what you have covered in this video and the favourites you cherry-picked, I really think you will love it. Your collection is very impressive and contains so many post-punk essentials ☺️
Pretty comprehensive coverage Hanna. I'd definitely include XTC in there, particularly stuff like Drums and Wires. Two other albums that you may or may not know are Fiction Tales by Modern Eon and Sound-on-Sound by Bill Nelson which are both arguably post punk too

For me post-punk isn't a particular sound as such, it's just by definition 'after punk' and needed punk to have happened to exist. Of course, bands like XTC & Talking Heads even contradict that definition lol. Loved that Magazine were number 2 in your list, what edition of Real Life is that? The cover is different.

Interesting to watch this and a great list of bands...Some faves of mine would be Big Black, Nick Caves' early band Birthday Party, Cabaret Voltaire, Hûsker Dü (maybe more punk than post punk), Theatre of Hate who later changed their name to Spear of Destiny...they have an incredible songwriter and singer called Kirk Brandon..damn I love his voice, Throbbing Gristle which I would describe as industrial chaos but it makes sense after 20 listens:-)...another one could be XTC, one of my fave bands of all time

I guess I always considered XTC more in the power pop realm and I featured them in that series, but they definitely are post-punk as well! Husker Du to me are definitely punk. I had so much fun getting into post-punk and it was still happening during that time, for example I remember ordering Virgin Prunes If I Die, I Die in 1983 from Rough Trade's San Francisco mailorder dept. and on one fave early shopping expedition in December 1981 myself and friends drove up from Sarasota Florida to Clearwater, where I bought Unknown Pleasures, Closer and Red Mecca all at one store! but the story doesn't end there as even today I'm still picking up records I missed, plus doing a lot of gapfilling. for example, I bought those Suburban Lawns and Au Pairs albums (in your display) recently. and even though I've owned From The Lion's Mouth since the early 2000's, it wasn't until this year that I got around to picking up their other releases like All Fall Down & Shock Of Daylight. still need to pick up Jeopardy and to re-buy PiL's Flowers Of Romance, the latter of which which I somehow traded in during the 1980s. this music will continue to thrill for many years to come, especially if you keep exploring all over the musical map so each genre stays fresh. I'm so happy for you :)
Great episode! I am not the biggest fan of post punk, more of a punk fan. With that said, some of the albums you showed are among my all time favorites, like The Sound Jepardy, Magazines debut and The Wire’s three first albums. Totally outstanding stuff. Marquee moon with Television is also an all time fave, but I can’t see them as post punk, but it doesn’t really matter what label is put on a record, if it’s good it’s good. 😀👍🏽

Hey Hanna! Wow! Kleenex! Pere Ubu! Suicide! This is all so great. You got the Ubu pronunciation right (actually I once played the lead and directed two of Alfred Jarry's Ubu plays). This is like a compilation of the best John Peel era. Of course you missed This Heat and The Residents, but that's forgivable, and you mentioned the obscure Tuxedomoon and Chrome, who were on the Residents' label. Snakefinger, a fabulous talent who was never really captured in the studio, was the missing link between all the Stiff acts and the Residents - look out for his live performances, they are amazing. One obscure band which I think you'd love is PragVec - they're so raw and elemental, especially their song 'Wolf'.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert There's too much Residents to explore, but their post punk masterpiece is Duck Stab/Buster'n'Glen, and then Eskimo and The Commercial Album. I'd also recommend Not Available - all these were released from 1978-80. But I should also mention Third Reich'n'Roll, and their version of Satisfaction, recorded in '76 but pure post-punk, in fact an inspiration to many postpunk bands (see the great Cabaret Voltaire from Sheffield, Gand of Four contemporaries. Sheffield was as important as Manchester and Liverpool at this time, but I think it's wonderful that there was such cross-pollination between these northern English cities and places like San Francisco and Ohio). You're so great Hanna!

Howdy, Hanna. That's my planet of sound (though I rarely listen to post punk these days having grown up with its rain-on-concrete smell). Your Fall collection is growing nicely. Wow, you name-checked just about every group that matters. The only bigger acts missing in action I can think of: The Pop Group, Prefects, Subway Sect, Scritti, Skids, Young Marble Giants, Cabaret Voltaire, TG, Swell Maps, Delta 5, Basement 5, 23 Skidoo, This Heat, ESG, The Passions (who I always mention) & ATV (who went good & weird after their debut). I'll be checking out Red Lorry Yellow Lorry though because I haven't heard a note of their stuff. Have you dipped a toe into messthetics? It's a mixed bag - post punk that in most cases never got out of the bedroom. Ciao till next time.

Messthetics is a subgenre, Hanna, & a series of CDs. O Level & Danny & The Dressmakers probably represent its 'biggest' names - & they were obscure enough. It's a ragbag of the bizarre, the inept, the terrible, the badly recorded & the wtf-but-kind-of-interesting.
Fun, informative video, with several choice suggestions for me. Also, the comments on your videos are always great, with good information. I think including Pere Ubu and Devo as "post punk" is a stretch, though. "Pre punk"??? I have always considered them being in their unique corner of the "new wave" world.

I think "Talking Heads 77" is post punk. It was just the four members for that album, but after that all hell broke loose. I was fortunate enough to see them at Oberlin College Finny Chapel in the early winter of 78. Just the four of them....

Many great groups emerged in the post punk era and became the giants we all love. For me the the first two Smiths albums and REM Murmur are amazing and quintessential post punk records.
I guess I lumped the Smiths and R.E.M. in my jangle pop series but there indeed is some crossover into post punk territory as well! Thanks for watching!

A great live album to track down is Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape from Bauhaus. The first four albums from the Cure are their best imho. Mark Burgess did the art for all the Chameleons albums.

I always veered more towards melodic power pop, punk, jangle pop, and psychedelia than post punk, but plenty of stuff in here that I like or am curious about. Like you, I have a hard time calling Television post-punk since, chronologically speaking, they are kind of pre-punk? But I can definitely see the musical connection between them and a lot of the moodiness of so much post punk. Whatever genre we want to call it, doesn't change the fact that Marquee Moon is a masterpiece! Enjoyed the video. Thx for sharing it. 🤘✌️

Very nice collection. I haunted record stores in the late 70's/early 80's, and I'm familiar with most of the albums you present. Definite fan of Au Pairs (also had their live album and some singles), Siouxsie (JuJu is my favorite), Wire (really dig "Map Ref. 41° N 93° W"), Gang Of Four, and The Fall. I remember "Metal Box" being quite expensive then. Also listened to Pylon, The Cramps, X-Mal Deutschland, The Passions, Bush Tetras, Mo-Dettes, Microdisney, and many others. And I lived outside of Omaha in the early 70's (Bellevue).

I’m a bit late in responding to your video, but I just had to weigh in. Love the British goth and Post Punk scene from ‘77 through ‘87. Although I’m familiar with The Sound, I don’t own the one you mentioned. I think you’ve sold me on that one. And it’s hard to come by anyone who’s into both Wire and The Fall. Those are my two favorite punk bands ever. I discovered Wire through ‘ 154 ‘ and was blown away by its original, industrial style. Also, I can’t say enough about ‘ Strange Times. ‘ That album is just absolute ear candy and loaded with treasures. The Chameleons are WAY overlooked, as well as ‘ Echo ‘. Love your shirt, by the way. And wow, you’re even into Tuxedomoon ? Your taste is impeccable ! I would be hard pressed to find anyone who digs THAT highly unique act. You’ve impressively covered the whole genre. I’m glad I tuned in 👍.
You can also throw Mission Of Burma into that category. Great band from Boston that reformed in the early 2000s and put out music that was almost as strong as their early 80s work.

@@stevenmccart5455 I saw them once, at the Siren Music Festival in 2002. They impressed me enough to go over to the merch table and add OnOffOn, their comeback album, to the 80s releases I owned. Their whole catalog is good-to-great.

You've covered the ground pretty well on post punk - there's a few others that could be included, two of my favourites I don't think you mentioned are Basement 5, their album 1965-1980 is great, it's basically reggae rock music headed by Dennis Morris, Sex Pistols photographer, get it, if you can find it; and Theatre of Hate, anything by them is good I think, they were quite underrated in the early 80s but I've always liked them... Thanks, I do enjoy punk and post punk nostalgia.
