Glad to see someone of your generation appreciating Big Star. They always kind of reminded me of Bad Finger. Both bands have a very limited catalog and we're only together for a short period of time but they made great music and their influence runs deep. Both were plagued by mental illness and tragedy but their legacy lives on. I'd like to give a shout out to Shuggie Otis (Inspiration Information) and Love (forever changes) as two albums you could maybe comment on. From one rocker to another, I dig what you got going on here keep it up!
Thanks for sharing. Nice to know there are still folks out there with rock faves from all the decades. Juliana Hatfield and The Who hit home the most for me. Keep up the great work with your videos. Off the cuff is good!
Hello Hanna, always love to hear people's favourite bands. I'm still hoping X will come to England, and play live. My favourite band of all time is Sweet, and my favourite solo artist is David Bowie. Keep up the good work, and stay safe.
Fun to watch this one and I wasn't at all surprised by the bands that you put in your top 10 at all. You number one was a total given and I think everyone is kind of like that when they connect with them that young. They're all good.
Thank you, Paul! Yeah, with all the gushing about some of these bands in my other videos, my top 10 was no surprise! :-) Hope you are well and I hope you get to enjoy spinning some records even with things being so busy for you lately! Peace. ~Hanna
Thanks so much for watching! This Eight Arms pressing is nothing to brag about. It's a collector's item but it's not a good pressing. Veruca Salt forever! Thanks for watching!
Cool list. These things are always fun to watch. It also provides alot of insight into our tastes. Thanks for sharing. I have mad love for Big Star. Those records are just magic. I was lucky enough to see Big Star three times and was at the Levitt Shell Alex tribute in Memphis the year he passed. Was even luckier to have met Alex. He was cool, to be sure. Jody is a sweetheart and all the nice things you hear about him are true. At that tribute show, I spotted John Fry and walked up and shook his hand and just said how much I appreciated what he did. I think he was a little perplexed at my outpouring. He really was a humble dude. I have so many Memphis stories, so I won't go on. Thanks for sharing... TB
Thanks, Tommy! Oh yes, you're also a massive Big Star fan! Hard not to love them. I can't believe you've seen them 3x...and you met Alex?! Geesh! High five. That's very impressive and envy-worthy! And you met the founder of Ardent?! Good Lord! I can't take it! Hehe. Peace. ~Hanna
What a great list. You showed so many awesome artists/bands. There was definitely a lot of bands I enjoy on there as well. I can honestly say I have not listened to a lot of Depeche Mode other than the hits. I should actually look into delving into some of their albums. Shawn
Thank you, Shawn. This was probably the most fun I've had doing a video. I will be doing a Depeche Mode ranking video within the next month if you want to come back and check that out for possible recommendations. Violator is their most popular and many people like starting out with that one. Peace. ~Hanna
Before clicking on the video i was hoping for The Smiths to make an appearance as they are my all time favourite band. I was pleasantly surprised when they immediately appeared! Great video :)
I love all bands mentioned today. Grew up with Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Beach Boys, The Byrds. Love love Big Star, very underrated band Alex Chilton and Chris Bell deserve more fame. Love Veruca Salt and Juliana Hatfield (solo and with Lemonheads and The Juliana Hatfield Three) especially their first two albums I still have them on CD. Smashing Pumpkins is one of the few bands I can't stop listening like The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins, Dad Can Dance, Belly, L7, Sonic Youth, Jane's Addiction, The Darling Buds, The Primitives, or Nine In Nails, among many others I love.
Thanks, Jim! I will be doing a revised list soon since this list has changed a bit. I don't think the Smiths are in my top 20 anymore, sadly! Very cool they are your #1, though!
Great unique list Hanna!!! Top 20 for me. I could go on forever but these are my go to bands. 1. Black Sabbath 2. Blue Oyster Cult 3. Rush 4. Pink Floyd 5. Porcupine tree 6. Alan Parsons Project 7. The Damned 8. Alice in Chains 9. Aerosmith 70s 10.Metallica ( early) 11. Fleetwood Mac 12. The Beatles 13. Golden Earring 14. Genesis/Phil Collins solo 15. Moody Blues 16. Budgie 17. The Police 18. Styx 19. Rolling stones 20. Deep Purple
Hey Thomas! Hope you are well this Tuesday morning! Budgie is a band I need to check out from your list. I've seen a few of their LPs when I'm out shopping. Alice in Chains were so great! I'm sure they'd be in my top 50...along with the Police. I am really digging Deep Purple lately, especially their earlier material. Thanks for watching and taking the time to include your list! Peace. ~Hanna
Love your choices. I’ll have to agree with you on X. Love “Los Angeles” so much. If you haven’t read the book “Under the big black song”, it’s a book about the LA punk scene. Great book and great video keep it up!
I really appreciate you subbing to my channel! Thanks! You have very good taste if you also love Big Star and Veruca Salt! We need more Veruca Salt fans! :-) Glad you're here. Peace. ~Hanna
Nina Gordon's solo work is excellent. Do you know Throwing Muses(Kristin Hersch/Tanya Donnely) Also Blake Babies(Julianna Hatfield) Belly(Tanya Donnely) Pixies/Frank Black solo and maybe Shawn Colvin(solo) a few artists that come to mind. All excellent material
Again, new to your channel and impressed with your list. I honestly love so many different artists and bands from different times and genres that a top 200 list is as inconceivable as a top twenty. Everything in your top ten is essential to me. Stella (of Stella’s Encounters) and I were recently sharing our mutual love of R.E.M., and I was surprised someone so young in China would even know who they are!
Thanks, Steve! Would love to see your top 20 list. Robyn is very hard to find in the wild. in fact, I've only seen one album of his locally and it was too expensive for me to get. I found it on eBay for $4.99 and was satisfied. :-) Peace. ~Hanna
Subscribed! Very awesome list. I have different faves for many of these groups, but that just goes to show how great they are. For example, I was thinking of three other Neil Young LPs when you mentioned his live stuff (Songs for Judy, Weld, Live Rust) only to be stumped. I'll be digging out that Massey Hall album and a couple of your top 20 picks that I'm not that familiar with for next week's playlist for sure. My top 20: Neil Young, Aimee Mann, PJ Harvey, My Bloody Valentine, The Replacements, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Liz Phair, Talking Heads, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Aztec Camera, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, R.E.M., Sigur Rós, The Byrds, Tom Waits.
Thanks Andrew! Really appreciate you watching! Neil Young has so many fantastic live ones. Massey Hall is the winner for me, though. 👍 I ❤️ Liz Phair and Aimee Mann! I’ve been loving Liz’s Girlysound to Guyville box set. Really worth it! I’ve tried getting into Tom Waits but I just can’t. What do you recommend from Aztec Camera? Have a wonderful Sunday!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert That set was a revelation to me when I got it last year. So great! As for Aztec Camera, High Land, Hard Rain is the LP to get. Just about every track is a gem. I can't imagine a power-pop/alternative/new wave fan not digging it. Their other LPs are spotty to say the least, but if you like their debut enough, seek out Knife. The moody title track rivals anything they've ever done.
Thanks so much, Andrew. I've heard great things about High Land, Hard Rain so I will be sampling it soon. Or if I see it at one of the 3 upcoming record shows, I may just pick it up based on your review and all the good buzz about it! Hope you had a great weekend!
Wow, what a great list. All of these artists are excellent one way or another. Depeche mode, REM, MBV, the smiths, the birds, the damned! etc def some of my favs, keep up the great videos!
Glad to see The Damned getting a mention. "Strawberries" is their finest moment and Captain Sensible an underrated guitarist. It was terrific to see "Evil Spirits" being so strong 36 years after "Strawberries" came out.
I think it might have been only the first run of Strawberries but they came with an actual Strawberry scent! Mine kept the whiff for years and I was sad when all the smell finally wore off, LOL!
I too love the 'Strawberries' album! 🤩 I'd first gotten into The Damned via the 'Damned But Not Forgotten' compilation album lent to me by a friend around 1990, and another friend then lent me his 'The Light At The End Of The Tunnel' one 🙂And now my 17-year-old Son also likes them a lot, especially 'Dozen Girls' 😁(not the silly 'thermal underwear' version, though! 😆)
Hi Hanna I enjoyed your video of your favourite artists. It so happens your favourite is my favourite as well. I have been following The Who since 1983. I was lucky enough to have seen them in Sydney in 2002. A lot of your favourites unfortunately I have not even heard off, but it is always interesting to explore different music tastes.
Hi Andrew! Thanks for checking out my top 20 favorite bands video! So glad you're a fellow Who fan! I did a Who ranking video as well as a Pete Townshend one if you want to check those out from my channel. I also saw The Who for the first time in 2002. Unfortunately, John Entwistle had died just before the tour. I was bummed. I've seen them 3 times total. Long live rock!
Hanna, good top 20. I quickly scribbled a list last night. Now, in the light of the following morning I am "thinking" about my list and starting to edit it. This could go on for a while. Makes me think of you just going off the cuff comment! Thanks, Chris
Thanks, Chris! I realize I already made a mistake on my list and would have swapped out one band for another, but hey, it was off-the-cuff and was a blast doing this! Lists can change frequently, too. Best to just go with what you have and do a video! Don't overthink it! The easy part was picking the 20...hardest part was putting them in order! Looking forward to seeing you possibly doing your top 20 video! Peace. ~Hanna
Thanks, James! I've always had a mental list of my top 20 handy, but putting them in ranking order was the most difficult part! I had a great deal of fun with it, though! ~Hanna
Hi Hanna. I really loved this run through and your personal take on the artists. It's always a pleasure watching you and hearing your appreciation of the music. You can always see the passion is real and heartfelt. Some of the music you showed has obviously moved you emotionally and been a real source of inspiration, comfort and strength and connected with you on a deep level. Beautiful stuff. Alan
Thank you so much, Alan. I'm really glad my passion for these artists/bands came through in the video. They truly mean a lot to me. It would be awesome seeing who would make your top 20! Have a great weekend! Peace. ~Hanna
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I am sure that took a lot of time. Since you are excellent at expressing yourself, it was easy to understand why you liked each album.
Hi Hanna new subscriber! Greetings from England! I found you via James Griffiths’ channel. Totally agree with you on R.E.M., those first five albums are totally flawless. I picked up my vinyl copy of Fables on a visit to Athens last year, great thrill!
Hey there, Paul! Thanks so much for subscribing. Oh, James Griffiths has a terrific channel. Glad you're here. Oh, you visited Athens last year - NICE! I've only been to Savannah, but not the Athens area. Yes, their early albums are gold! Peace.
Great bands and artists on this top 20 list. I love that you showed Veruca Salt. I have 3 of their albums on vinyl. They are both great songwriters and sound amazing. I have not seen them live yet. If they tour again I am definitely checking them out ! Awesome video !
Thanks so much, Gil! Yay, another Veruca Salt fan! I've been lucky enough to see them live twice - once in '97 and once on their reunion tour in 2014. Someone else here mentioned the Church and how could I forget them?! They would also make my top 20 and I would most likely swap X out for the Church! I know you're a big fan, too! Oh well, it was an off-the-cuff video! Hehe. Would love to see your list! Peace. ~Hanna
Came across your vids under the “recommended for you” links. And when I saw that 7 of your Top 20 are also in my Top 20 I had to hit the subscribe button! Jimi, The Doors, The Who, Beach Boys, Pumpkins, REM, and Veruca! I’m an American living in Sweden now, and am so blown away at all the great new rock bands here in Europe. If you like female fronted bands with killer guitar check out Pip Blom from Holland. She would’ve fit in perfectly in the 1990’s Alternative scene. They (her band is also called Pip Blom) do not even make their U.S. debut until March at South By Southwest and their debut album doesn’t come out until May. They’ve released several singles and a kick ass EP so far and they are one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen.
Wow! You have wonderful taste then, my friend! I'm so glad you found my channel. Oooo, I'd love to visit Sweden someday, as I have some Swedish roots. I indeed love female-fronted bands and I always appreciate recommendations. I will for sure check out Pip Blom! I have written it down in my notebook. I'm sure she's up my alley if the music has that classic alternative 90s sound. Much thanks! Do you like Letters to Cleo? They're another favorite of mine from the 90s.
The Omaha Introvert Of course I’m a Letters To Cleo fan! Saw them a couple of times in concert back in the day. Kay Hanley has been jamming with Belly (another of my faves) a lot in 2018 which really made me happy to see. Pip Blom also has a female drummer (who is one of the hardest rocking drummers there is now) and Pip’s little brother is on rhythm guitar (and I’m convinced he’ll be a solo star someday, too since he’s so wild onstage)!
High five, that's awesome! Kay has one of my favorite voices in rock. Oooohhh, Belly are superb as well! Okay, I'm not going to hesitate too long in sampling Pip Blom now that you say they have a kickass female drummer! I'm a drummer as well.
The Omaha Introvert Glad to hear you like Belly, too! So happy they’ve reunited after 23 years apart and released a phenomenal new album! They were just as good in concert last year as they were in the ‘90’s. I tried to find some good Pip Blom footage with Gini Cameron on drums (she’s only been in the band for a few months...most UA-cam footage has their previous male drummer). This Dutch TV footage from a couple days ago is pretty good: ua-cam.com/video/kmx72YrwFb4/v-deo.html I was so blown away with Gini’s drumming when I saw them in Dublin in November that I immediately ran up to her as she left the stage after their encore just so I could tell her how awesome I think she is! I wound up talking to Gini for an hour then talked to Pip herself for about 30 minutes after that...much to my wife’s chagrin! 😄 (I married a Swedish woman that’s why I’m living here now.) The fans in Dublin even chanted “Gini! Gini!” in between each song, which is something I’ve never seen for a drummer in the thousands of concerts I’ve attended. Needless to say, I am counting down the days until I see Pip Blom again in Paris next month.
Wow, that clip you shared of Pip Blom is amazing! I'm going to become a big fan...I already know it! They rock and her voice is amazing. The drummer definitely kicks ass! Lots of power. Very sweet that you married a Swedish woman! :-)
Wonderful list. Great musical minds think quite alike. Although I have all the albums and bands/artists you mentioned, not all of them would make my top 20, but several of them would certainly make the call. It's especially nice to see Robyn Hitchcock (an all time favorite of mine) and The db's get some love out there in the world. Thanks for sharing your favorites.
Thank you for your kind words, Stephen! Great to see another fan of the dB's and Robyn! Hard to find those who appreciate their music! Thanks again. ~Hanna
Great list of fantastic artists and bands! I lived in Chapel Hill for 7 years and saw so many shows at Cat's Cradle concert venue with several of these artists. I'm a musician and was a regular at the cradle and got to meet several of the artists you've listed. A few stories you might like - saw Big Star Third show years ago. This was a show recreating Big Star's third album (obviously) including Jody Stephens, Mike Mills, Chris Stamey, Mitch Easter, and others. Jody Stephens is a very sweet guy and generous with taking photos with fans - such a genuine smile he has! X played a show at the cradle also - fun fact: John Doe is one huggy guy. He loves to wander around after a show and hug the fans and have photos taken. Seen Robyn Hitchcock many times (with the Venus 3) - super nice guy and enjoys chatting with fans and signing records (as does Peter Buck). I used to run into Chris Stamey at the local multiplex where he would be taking his daughter to see the latest Disney-Pixar movie. Very genuine guy and a local record producer. He produced records by my guitar teacher. Peter Holsapple is a kinda quiet guy but very kind. He was coaxed up on stage to play The Ballad of John and Yoko with the Minus 5 when they were playing at the cradle. Saw the dBs just once - great show. I spoke with Chris Stamey after the Big Star thing and he said "thanks for coming out - and come see the dBs in a couple weeks." The cradle also hosted a tribute night to Alex Chilton featuring several local musicians. Such a wonderful night and such reverence for the man by all in attendance! Side fact: the Depeche Mode show at the United Center in Chicago during their Spirit tour was one of the best shows I've ever seen!!! Crazy crowd and Gahan was on fire that night. Wish I could relive that one. Don Dixon is an incredibly nice guy and has an amazingly powerful voice. Mitch Easter plays shows around the area and produces records at his studio outside of Winston-Salem. One Halloween night (I was dressed as the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland) I walked up in costume to help Mitch and his band load his equipment into a venue, and he kind of freaked out when I grabbed an amplifier until his wife said "Oh, that's Kevin." I was such a fan boy of R.E.M. and their early records produced by Dixon and Easter - it was such fun to hang out with Easter and Dixon and even help them load in and out of shows. Any way - great list again. I'll have to check out Aimee Mann solo stuff, more Veruca Salt, and Julia Hatfield. Thanks!
Hi! I appreciate you being here and leaving a wonderful comment! Isn't Jody Stephens amazing? You have been to so many INCREDIBLE shows! I'm quite jealous! LOL didn't know that fun fact about John Doe being "huggy." Bet he's really hated the pandemic, then! I appreciate you sharing all of these awesome stories! Hope to hear from you again!
Hi Hanna... love this video ! So many great bands ! The Smiths is always a band I have wanted to check out. I love Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac also . I have to check out Juliana Hatfield. I have never heard her stuff. You know I like Depeche Mode and The Who. I saw Depeche Mode last year and I’ve seen The Who twice and Roger Daltrey do a solo show in recent years. I can’t wait to see your Depeche Mode ranking video. I’ve been getting into The Kinks more lately especially their stuff from 1975 onward. I love rediscovering older bands that I might have missed out on before and right now it’s The Kinks. Your video has given me some more to check out. Great stuff! Thanks Hanna. Chez
Hey Chez!!!! Thanks so very much for watching! Juliana has such a sweet voice! Very cool you love my top 2 favorite bands!!! Depeche Mode was my favorite concert ever...even though I’ve seen The Who 3x live...just not in their prime and the Ox and Keith Moon were gone. Glad you’re looking forward to my Depeche Mode ranking video! I love the Kinks! They would definitely make my top 40. There are still few more albums I need to hear from them. Thanks again! Peace. Hanna
Greetings Hanna, just discovered this video from your "archives".Love your list. Because of the passage of time, perhaps your current top 20 has a different look. For my list I have omitted some bands with small discographies: Suburban Lawns, Joy Division, Big Star, Jellyfish. My top 20, in reverse order: 20 Dead Can Dance 19 Mazzy Star 18 Talking Heads 17 Pink Floyd (pre 1980) 16 New Model Army 15 Stan Ridgway/Wall of Voodoo 14 The Damned 13 The Church 12 The Smiths 11 Siouxsie and the Banshees 10 Sonic Youth 9 Fish Karma 8 The Jesus and Mary Chain 7 Nina Nastasia 6 The Doors 5 Robyn Hitchcock (plus Egyptians and Soft Boys) 4 The Billy Nayer Show 3 X 2 Sparklehorse 1 XTC Honorable mentions: Magazine, Wire, Laurie Anderson, The Sound, Dirty Three, Mercury Rev, The Residents, Alice Donut, PJ Harvey.
Hi Todd! Thanks for joining in the fun here and providing your top 20 list! Damn, I love Jellyfish, too and wish they had a bigger catalog (Andy, come back!). What's your favorite Dead Can Dance LP? So far I just have a compilation of their early material and Anastasis and Spiritchaser. I'm totally unfamiliar with Fish Karma, Nina Nastasia, and the Billy Nayer Show, so you gave me some bands to explore here! Yay on the honorable mentions, too, especially with Magazine, the Sound, and Dirty Three! Whoop whoop!
Hi Hanna, very enjoyable video. I have a lot of time for your descriptions here, you do very well in summarising your artists, I can tell it's coming from the heart and shows a lot of time and thought spent in the music. A real labour of love. Couldn't agree more with you on Hendrix being in everyone's top 20. Love seeing the db's in there (actually, love how you go for solo/ band works as well). Yes, Pumpkins! Big star are starring high, and it just gets better... great video, cheers- Dean
Thanks, Dean! My top 20 hasn't changed a great deal over the years, so it was somewhat easy to quickly jot them down. I had the most trouble with putting them in a ranking order! I'm glad my passion for these bands/artists came through! That's always the goal. Glad you agree with me that Hendrix is required in these type of lists! Would love to hear about your top 20 sometime! Hope all is well. Peace. ~Hanna
Love this top 20, Hannah. A few i'm not familiar with, but i trust your gut...except for Neil Young. As a Canadian i should probably be shot, but i can't do that whiny voice.
Aimee Mann!!! Kool list. I’m not sure about my top twenty. But my top two are Love and the Small Faces. BTW, you shouldn’t have to defend your choices. My friend Mark and I were talking today about why it’s uncool to run down music. Somewhere in the world it’s somebodies favorite record. You did good.
Thanks, Bo! Yes, I really like that you are a fellow Aimee Mann fan! Love and the Small Faces as your top 2 - awesome! I'm going to get a reissue of Forever Changes sometime before Christmas! Yeah, it's a shame I have to put that disclaimer before I start a list, but I have to remind people that it's just my personal list and of course they won't agree, but they don't have to bash it! After all, I did this for fun! Thanks for watching and I'll let you know if package #3 made it. :-) Peace. ~Hanna
Recent convert and subscriber to your channel and am enjoying it. I have a similar passion and desire to share. I have gotten several bits of input and have been checking some bands out, so thanks Always happy to hear of another Big Star fan. A little surprised I haven't heard you speak of Sleater-Kinney (great band), but I am a newbie. Thanks again.
Hi Bill! Thank you for subbing and I'm so glad you are enjoying my videos! Ever thought about sharing your passion for music on here and starting a UA-cam channel? I like Sleater-Kinney as well but I would just consider myself a casual fan...so casual that I don't own anything by them. I should probably change that! Thanks for the reminder! Be well.
Hey Hanna, Well I quite enjoyed this, even though I'm not a rock person for the most part...it of course doesn't matter....I have the same passion for my own top 20 if I were to ever make a list. :-) Hard not to appreciate Jimi, whatever one is into. Quite a striking cover on that first REM! I seen a documentary on them once and found them to have quite an interesting story. As soon as you showed Neil Young, I thought of our sister Lis coming in with a 'Wooo!' ;-) I actually have always liked Neil very much and have 5 or 6 of his albums. My personal favorite is 'Prairie Wind'. My best buddy growing up was obsessed with The Doors, and I guess I got into them a bit at least vicariously through him. Nothing at all wrong with off-the-cuff videos. :-) For sure, bring on the variety of topics. Always enjoyable. -Carm
Hey, Carm! How's it going?! Yeah, my list may be limited in scope, but this is what I really love. At least you understand. Hehe! Lis is definitely a fellow lover of Neil! Wow, Prairie Wind is one I've forgotten about and haven't listened to in a very long time. Thumbs up that you are also a fan of him! Thanks, Carm! I'm sure you could easily pull off a video like this of your own top 20. It's fun! Peace. ~Hanna
Great list of bands/artists. Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Everybody Knows album still sounds fresh. So many highlights on the album - I love the mysterious intro to Cowgirl in the Sand. Every song is killer. Big Star No 1 record. That album is just so good. I listen to it often. When Alex Chilton died, they played The Ballad Of El Goodo on BBC Radio Two. A song of such power. Great stuff.
Thanks for stopping by! Glad you liked my list. I can play the Ballad of El Goodo over and over without getting tired of it. Oh yeah, "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere"...a classic LP. Thanks for the kind words! Peace. ~Hanna
Thanks, Steve! I appreciate you watching that long video. It was really fun for me to do. Ooo, I look forward to hearing about your list! Peace. ~Hanna
Hey, thank you so much! Oh yes, the Doors were one of a kind! So cool they’re your #1! I noticed you did a top 20 Metallica list I’ll have to check out and a CCR video! CCR would most likely be in my top 30! I love them! Peace. Hanna
I never expected to see X in your top 20. What a nice surprise Hanna. I’m from Australia where they’re almost unknown. I did pick up the first three albums on vinyl about 5 or six years ago and love them to bits. I since bought one of those 5 classic albums in a cheap box CD things. I still like the first three best. The new one Alphabetland is very good and it is nice to see Robbie Krieger guesting. It took me a few listens to get what X were up to with the vocal harmonies but it’s actually quite extraordinary at times and grew to love it very quickly. Have you ever listened to all female band The Raincoats? Their first three albums were released 77-84 and then they reformed in the 90s and released another album. Your top 20 list I’d guess you’re a fan already and if not you may like them. Kurt Cobain was a big fan. It was a treat to see Juliana Hatfield as a pick as she was well known in Australia in the early/mid 90s and had a bit of airplay. I’m sure you knew X were an early ‘life changing’ influence on Hatfield too. The Lemonheads album It’s a Shame About Ray was very popular here and Juliana Hatfield played on it. I’ll have to check out some of her albums as I haven’t really heard her since the 90s. There are a lot of other artist I like in your list and could talk about but I’ll leave it there for now except I love Big Star, especially Radio City. Sorry for responding to older videos. Cheers!
Hi John! Thanks so much for catching my top 20 bands video! It hasn't changed much, although I'd try to add the Church in there somehow! So glad you are a massive fan of X, too! I still need to pick up Alphabetland. Their first 4 albums are favorites of mine! I'm behind on the Raincoats, but thanks for the reminder that I need to investigate and sample them further! And I love that you also love Juliana. Yeah, she's been a longtime fan of X. What do you think of her recent covers albums of the Police and ONJ? I prefer her original material, but nice to see her nail these covers so well! Hope all is well and keep spinning the great tunes! Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Hi Hanna. Thanks for your reply. It's really great to watch your videos as your ears are so open to many different types of music as your top 20 bands video showed. I haven't heard Juliana's later albums at all, just the first three solo records and the Lemonheads album. I too prefer originals. I like the odd cover on an album but generally don't buy albums of covers. I am a big Matthews Sweet fan and bought some of those Under the Covers releases, they were ok but I prefer his own songs. I will check these out however, they're on UA-cam music so I can try before I buy. Great you like The Church! Being an Aussie I grew up with The Church hearing songs from them right out of the gate with The Unguarded Moment in 1981 It did well here and had a lot of airplay. Great band and consistent. You may be interested in one of Australia's best kept secrets, The Underground Lovers. I think you'd love them. GB3 is a side project of The Underground Lovers and Steve Kilby from The Church collaborated on one album, Damaged/Controlled. The single, 'Nectarine' is wonderful. ua-cam.com/video/zYI8XbbkiP0/v-deo.html I highly recommend Dream it Down and Cold Feeling by The Underground Lovers - Genres covered: Dream Pop, Shoegaze, Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Alternative Dance, Indietronica. Apologies if you're already on to them but they are in my top five Australian bands of all time. The Go Betweens and The Triffids are great Aussie bands too. Glad you like The Go Betweens. Stay safe and well, John
Just listened to the ONJ covers album. Juliana does a great job and although I'm no fan of the originals I enjoyed her take on them. Immediately afterwards I listened to Bed which I think is fantastic. I hadn't heard it before and can see why you mentioned it in one of your videos. Great album. I particularly like Hatfield's guitar playing and tone and her thoughtful approach to the instrument really stands out. I kind of knew this but had forgotten how good she is; it really struck me with the two albums played today. Cheers.
Very cool list! A few of those artists appear on my top 20, but for the most part it is different. What’s not different is The Who at number #1, greatest band of all time! The Who is the reason why I found your channel. Anyway great list, really enjoying the content!
Hey, Will! Oh, I’m so glad you found my channel because of a Who search and how awesome that they are also your favorite! Means a lot that you are enjoying the content here! Long live rock! Peace. Hanna
Happy Tuesday morn to yee! Having a cuppa ☕️ and enjoying your top 20 list, my list would be a rotation from day to day or maybe sitting down an listening to an album that I haven’t pulled for awhile and go “ dang!!! That’s in my top 20! Heehee but kudos to you and your collection my friend. My fav Doors is Soft Parade, love Days of The New...they did 2 covers on the Stoned Immaculate covers album, The End and LA Woman they have the wow factor on those two! Cool seeing ya have a great week ahead- Lis
Happy Tuesday to you, Lis! Thanks for sitting through my long video! Hehe! Yeah, I realized that one band on my list I would swap out with another - swap out X for the Church! Hehe. Oh well. Lists change. Oh wow, I haven't heard those Doors songs that Days of the New covered in so long! Really sad story about Travis Meeks. He's had lots of problems with drug use. Such a shame. See you later, my friend! Peace. ~Hanna
Andrew, thank you for subscribing! I appreciate that! :-) Don't think I would make much changes to this list except try to squeeze the Church in! Cheers!
I clicked on Amazon Music to check out the DBs. Turns out I have heard their Katrina fundraiser song but was surprised by how well recorded their stuff was. I like them. thanks! Now I will continue the video.
Thanks, Mike! Yeah, the dB's are so underrated. Those first 2 albums are gold to me! Yeah, they had wonderful production. Scott Litt produced their 2nd album.
Killer top 20 Hanna! Several that would make my list. One band I need to get into is X. I have a couple of John Doe cds. You know how I feel about The Who.
Thanks, Lou! You really can’t go wrong with any of the first 4 X albums! John Doe has some good solo albums, as does Exene! Feel free to do a top 20 video, too! I know your #1! 😉😉 Peace. Hanna
Veruca Salt was one of my first shows in a "nightclub". That would have been the American Thighs tour I believe with the Muffs and Triple Fast Action. I also went to the Eight Arms tour that you speak of with the same openers :)
Great taste you have there!! Curious if you’ve seen “Storefront Hitchcock”? Great stripped down video of him live in New York. Does a version of Glass Hotel that will blow your mind. Also, couldn’t agree with you more about REM. My fav album is probably Reckoning, but Murmur, Pageant and Fables are all great. Actually, I really love “Up” too, a highly underrated album. It was just after Bill Barry left the band and was a very deep, thought provoking record, including some of Stipe’s best lyrics. Fun fact, my first REM show, Robyn Hitchcock opened for them. That’s how I got turned onto him and also the DB’s. Peter Holsaple was playing with REM for the tour as an additional backing musician. Several years later the band I was in opened for Hitchcock at a small club in So-Cal. He was a very cool dude, chilled at the bar during our set, and was just as humorous in conversation as his his lyrics reflect. Really enjoyed this rundown!
Thank you! Always wonderful to meet fellow fans of these bands. I have seen Storefront Hitchcock. I absolutely love that performance! Hard to beat those 80s R.E.M. albums! I haven't given "Up" a listen in many years. Perhaps I should revisit it. Wow, Robyn opening for R.E.M....what a dream show! Peter Holsapple rules! I hear he's very down to earth. Thanks so much for checking out my top 20! Peace.
Hey Hanna, first off I am afraid that I lost touch for a while and I have a lot of catching up to do. But I'll get there. Anyway, The dB's on your list was very surprising and very nice to see them recognized. You must be aware that Chris Stamey is also pretty much responsible for Big Star's Third (the band) and, next to the real thing, are amazing. Juliana Hatfield is a cool choice as well. I think the Blake Babie's cover of Temptation Eyes is just about perfect. Interesting list. Take care...
Great to hear from you, Tim! I almost thought you were done with my channel! I know you've been going through a lot of stuff and I'm very sorry you've had to deal with flooding, etc. I hope it's all resolved soon so you can get back to things you love. Yeah, Chris Stamey's ties to Big Star are quite impressive. The dB's have been a favorite for quite a while. I'm also going to pick up that Death of Rock LP being released next week with Holsapple and Chilton early recordings. Very cool you know of the Blake Babies, too! Yes, I love their covers of "Temptation Eyes," "Severed Lips," "Walk a Thin Line," and "I Wanna Be Sedated." Thanks for stopping by, and catch ya later! Peace. ~Hanna
You're going to be joining the VC 1K club soon Hanna...nice list, always tough to do these kind of things, might change from day to day so sometimes off the cuff is the way to go. Think maybe the only ones here I haven't heard anything by are Veruca Salt and maybe the Damned. Oh and Big Star, for all the hype I've never owned anything by them. Cool list, cheers!
Thanks so much, Doug! I appreciate your comments on this video. That would be cool if I reach 1,000 subs! :-) Yes, lists can be tough but I have more fun with them if I don't overthink it! I already realize I forgot one of my favorite bands that should have been included here, but oh well! Oh, you're in for a treat if you haven't really listened to much Big Star. Wish I could listen to them for the first time all over again! Their music never gets tiring, though! Hope you're having a great Tuesday! Thanks. ~Hanna
Cool idea for a video Hanna, when you think about it it's strange that not that many people do favourite band/artist countdowns, although plenty do album rankings. I Often Dream Of Trains is the one Robyn Hitchcock album I know really well. The DB's is one band whose name I've discovered through watching your videos and will now be looking out for their records. It's nice to hear someone saying something nice about Pet Sounds for a change. Speak soon, James
Hey James! Yeah, I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen more basic videos like this in the VC, to be honest. This was the most fun I've ever had doing a video. Whoa, is there a lot of hate for Pet Sounds in the VC?! That's actually an album I wouldn't mind having various pressings of! I did experience a bit of negativity when I showed my Duophonic pressing of it, but didn't know many people disliked that album overall. It's a sad world... Kudos again for being a Robyn Hitchcock fan, my friend! Thanks so much. Peace. ~Hanna
I'm so happy to have discovered your channel because I'm getting sort of bored listening to guys talk about vinyl. Since you mentioned Juliana Hatfield I wanted to recommend watching the Christmas episode of "My So Called Life" where she plays an angel.
Thanks so much, Maria! I'm glad you're here. Yeah, the vinyl community is definitely male-dominated. I love that Christmas episode of My So-Called Life! She was also in Pete and Pete! :-) I appreciate you watching!
You bet, John! Oh, I did a whole fangirl video on Depeche Mode. "Just can't get enough" of them. Pardon the silly pun! This was a fun video for me to film. Some of these have shuffled a bit, no doubt!
Wow. So many overlaps with my own top 20, if I had one: Byrds, Beach Boys, Damned, Smiths, MBV, Neil Young, Robyn Hitchcock and Depeche Mode would all be in there. The Doors and The Who are pretty great too. You have convinced me to give some of these other acts a go. Take care. Stephen
We have very similar music tastes it seems! :-) Thanks so much, Stephen. It was really fun to do this. Neat that you're going to check out some of the others! I would have included the Church in my list instead of X, actually. Peace. ~Hanna
Wow Hanna, you got some awesome bands on your list girl! I must own light at the end of a tunnel. I am a big Dammed fan. I agree about captain sensible guitar playing. I have seen Hitchcock in new york in late 80s early 90s. Fegmania with the Egyptians is my fav album. His song writing and musicianship is brilliant. He tells amazing stories live in concert. DBs as we have discussed before are great. you go girl for havingbthem on your list. The Smiths and Morrissey are def. In my top 20. Meat is Murder one of many my fav. The queen is dead another one. I just ordered the Smith tee shirt that has meat is murder album on tee shirt. Coming in mail. I have seen REM 3 times. first 4 REM albums are my fav. That includes your ep. I was getting nervious you would leave out Neil Young. Great list! Have a great week. Cheers.
Thank you, Gordon! I bought that Damned compilation on Discogs a while back. The CD version was actually how I became a big fan in the first place. Fegmania is a terrific album. I must own it on vinyl. I do have a Robyn Hitchcock album to show in my next finds video that I got for $4.99. I still need to get Meat is Murder on vinyl, but I agree it is awesome. Very cool you ordered a T-shirt of that! And you have great taste with REM - we both adore their early albums! Oh hell no, I would never leave out Neil! Hahaha! Thanks, man! Looking forward to your next video! Looks like my friend Robert NYC Raised on Records will be sending you some VCLT soon! Very generous guy. One of my best friends here. Can't wait to see what he sends your way! Peace. ~Hanna
Hello Hanna; I like your list very much, concise and to the point. The albums you picked showed a wide range of musical styles and genre's. I believe this way to be better than a narrow listening range. Congrat's to you on your list. Independent thought in opinion is the way to go. Let those who disagree make and post their own list. As much as I will admit I am not knowledgeable with all the artists you showed. I couldn't agree more with the classic rock artists and albums. Damned, Hendrix, Byrds, Doors, Neil Young, Big Star, and The Who. Great picks. Good Luck, Till next time. Your friend Tina !!!!
Thanks so much, Tina. This was a blast to do...in fact, probably the most fun I've had with a video. Yeah, I felt the need to put a disclaimer in here because it's my own personal list and not based on some list Pitchfork or Rolling Stone came up with. Glad you agreed with some of my picks! :-) Rock on. ~Hanna
Great top 20 Hannah. I’ll give you my list. We only have a couple in common but most of yours are at least in my top 50. 1. The Beatles 2. R.E.M. 3. The Kinks 4. The Pixies 5. The Rolling Stones 6. The Ramones 7. The Church 8. Elvis Costello 9. U 2 10. The Velvet Underground 11. Bob Dylan 12. The Replacements 13. Bruce Springsteen 14. The Smiths 15. David Bowie 16. The Strokes 17. Wilco 18. The Cure 19. Husker Du 20A. The Psychedelic Furs 20B. The Hoodoo Gurus
Hey Dave! Thanks for watching. The Beatles, Kinks, Ramones, Replacements, Bowie, and the Cure I'm sure would all make my top 50. Oh, DAMN IT! The Church! Okay, I would swap out X for the Church. How could I forget them. Well, that's the first flub I noticed. Not too bad. Hehe. I have nearly all of the Church's catalog on CD except for maybe 3 or 4 titles. I absolutely love them. Great list you have there! Peace. ~Hanna
@@TheOmahaIntrovert - Oh, I didn't realise this list is now at least 4 years old! 😅 I just clicked on it when it was among the recommendations after the previous video of yours I'd watched, and its title spoke to me 😄 Greetings from NZ! 😀🎶
Hi, thanks for taking the time and effort to do this video. It was interesting seeing your choices. Out of the twenty artists you showed i have music by seventeen of them in my collection so i can see why you chose those specific artists. Personally i don`t think i could do a favourite top twenty list or even a top hundred list because i like so many artists and different genres of music. And it`s all of equal importance to me that i couldn`t choose one over the other. Two artists that would definitely be in a top twenty list of mine are the Sex Pistols and The Cure. You mentioned Jazz. Personally i`m not the biggest Jazz fan but have you heard Shhh - Peaceful by Miles Davis ? I find a lot his music a bit directionless but Shhh - Peaceful from his album In A Silent Way is a really deep, lush sounding track. It`s quite relaxing and beautiful. You mentioned Harvest Moon by Neil Young. The track Harvest Moon from that album is so beautiful it actually made me cry the first time i heard it. Completely random question, but has a piece of music ever made you cry ? I`d love to hear your favourite Depeche Mode songs lists. Thanks.
While doing lists sometimes is difficult, I find the challenge very fun at the same time. It's true this list will change a bit over time, but that's okay. It's already slightly changed because I forgot about one of my favorite bands that belongs in the top 20 - the Church. I haven't heard Shhh from Miles. I'll look it up. I actually don't believe I've ever cried from a song. Doesn't mean I never will! The Cure would definitely be in my top 50. Yes, stay tuned for my Depeche Mode album ranking video. I will also include favorite songs from each album when I do that. Thanks for an awesome comment once again! ~Hanna
Enjoying your top picks - unfortunately most of which I never heard of but I am a decade or two older than you. As you can see from my picture I am holding a copy of Procol Harum’s Grand Hotel. I am a fan of Fleetwood Mac but prior to Stevie Nicks - like Then Play On. Neil Young and Crazy Horse did some wonderful material - Cinnamon Girl was a great song. Anyhow, I watch these videos to learn about different music so “Thank You”. I got the Doors first album when it came out. Opps! That really exposes my age.
Procol Harum are great. I have their first album on vinyl with a Whiter Shade of Pale. I like both Fleetwood Mac lineups, but am still more of a fan of the Lyndsey/Stevie era. I have 3 early Fleetwood Mac albums on vinyl. Keep spinning the good classic rock. It's some of my favorite stuff. Peace.
Hey Hanna , I am discovering your back catalogue ! My Top 20 The Comsat Angels , The Chameleons , The Sound , The Cure , The Talking Heads , XTC , Siouxsie & The Banshees , The The , Big 🌟 , The Doors , The Hollies , X, Wall Of Voodoo , Gang Of Four , Depeche Mode , Til Tuesday , Big Black , Killing Joke , The Dream Syndicate , Massive Attack , Portishead , Cocteau Twins and The ⛪ ! Great vlog. Repercussion by DB's is classic , as you like them I bet you would dig Mitch Easter's Let's Active. I omitted Mazzy 🌟 and Love !! I must stop ! See ya 🎸
Wow, our music taste is so similar! I don’t think I’ve ever listened to Wall of Voodoo or the Sound. What do you recommend from them? I hope to get more Portishead on vinyl sometime this year. So good! I love nearly all the bands you mentioned. I love Let’s Active! I have Cypress and Afoot on vinyl. The dB’s are so underrated!!! You rock! Thanks so much for watching!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Thanks for the great channel ! ✔ out Dark Continent by Wall Of Voodoo and From The Lions Mouth by The Sound. Also glad to 👀 you liked 16 Tambourines by The Three O'clock . " A Day In Erotica " & " Jetfighter " just incredible song's ! See ya.. Stay 😎
Hey Hanna! Nice top 20 ! :) i also love rock, actually when i started collecting i mostly went for Rock, mostly 70ies rock ( Nazareth, Deep Purple, Ac/dc, Rare Earth, STeppenwolf, Titanic..etc) and slowly opened to other genres.. I have to say i was not so much into Jazz, but i am sure you could really enjoy some nice jazz stuff. try out Nubya Garcia, Yazz Ahmed or Christian Scott, they are Uk Based players and their stuff is awesome and not too conventionally jazz ;) cheers! David.
Thanks, David! I appreciate you giving me some jazz recs! I've been into rock since I started seriously getting into music 22 years ago or so! It'll always be my first love. Hope you are well and thanks for being here! Peace. ~Hanna
@@TheOmahaIntrovert let me know if you like any of these jazz albums : La Saboteuse by Yazz Ahmed, Nubya's Five by Nubya Garcia, and Stretched Music by Christian Scott. Have a great day and listen ;)
well done on your top 20.....mine would change daily, in fact i think it would be impossible for me to pick a top 20, i am hearing 'new' music all the time, and checking out 'new' bands, when i say new i mean new to me.....there is so much i havent heard yet, cheers
Hey Susan! Thanks for stopping by! Oh yeah, there is so much music out there to explore. There are tons of classic rock albums I still haven't heard. Makes it hard to do lists like this, but I had a blast doing this and didn't think too hard. I realize I left the Church off my top 20 and they should have been on there! Oh well! Peace. ~Hanna
It is sad... but i know why we have to give a disclaimer like you gave at the start. We all know that everyone has their own opinions and that they should be respected and we should use it as a starting point for discussion... But there are so many knuckleheads out there that do not get that and we need to "remind" then to not be douche's! It is a sad world we live in! As I am writing this I am listening to the Beat Street soundtrack you gave me... It is soooo 80's old school! Love it! The one record you gave me that I got the best discovery of was the Judith by Judy Collins. I literally teared up listening to a few of the songs... So emotional and beautiful. Send In The Clowns... ..magnificent... Long story short.. All of the records played good enough for me and I am still enjoying them.. another thank you!
Yep, I've experienced some ridiculous, negative comments before when I do ranking lists, so the disclaimer is necessary. Have to remind people that it's my list. It is a sad world! Oh, I'm so glad you're enjoying the vinyl I sent! 80s old school with Beat Street. Woo hoo! Judy Collins has a beautiful voice. I'm so glad they weren't all too destroyed to be enjoyed by you! Peace. ~Hanna
Not at all! They were all in better shape than I expected... You have high standards...lol Then again.. I like crackling and popping.. and the occasional skip is fine... so.. Maybe it is just because I am a weirdo!
Very nice eclectic list. Can't beat THE WHO. Since I live in Memphis, love to see THE BIG STAR thumbs up. I'm sure you know that they named themselves after a grocery store in Memphis called ....wait for it...Big Star!! 😊
Is that really where Big Star's name came from? LOL!!!! Very cool you are in Memphis. We visited there briefly for the first time last year on a road trip. Didn't think much of Goner Records but we were very impressed by Shangri-La. Cheers!
Nice video, lady! I had a feeling Who would make it to #1 but I was waiting with baited breath incase something crazy happened LOL!!! :) I can't even make Top 20 lists yet....still discovering music at this point, but maybe in time that will happen and I will follow your lead :) XO -Ambie
Great List - we like a lotta of the same bands - dB’s, X, Veruca Salt, MBV, Big Star. Sure you’ve heard - Nina Gordon’s version of Straight Outta Compton?!
Hi there! Thanks for checking out this video. I'm thrilled you like many of the same groups! Yes, I love Nina's version of Straight Outta Compton! It cracks me up and I'm so glad she did that! Hehe! Peace.
i just got The Humpty Dance single , original 1989 , and John Mayer Heavier Things , in the mail to day , its always fun having packages waiting for you
Yes I remember Days of the New! - sorry, I just had to say that. I bought that album with the lightening tree (as my friends called it) on the cover, when it came out.
Hei, Hanna! I'm not a big fan of "lists" especially if I would "have" to make them by myself but I find it interesting to watch other people's lists. Your list included some band that I like very much. The Doors are very high on my "list". :) As a some kind of guitar player myself, of course Jimi Hendrix is something else. Maybe I should make some kind of list someday, Jarkko / MyVinylBar
Hey Jarkko! Great to see you here. I love lists! They can be challenging, but I like the challenge and it lets me think about why and how much I like certain bands. Kudos that you are a big Doors and Hendrix fan as well! Hope you do make your list someday! Peace. ~Hanna
I've watched 2/3 of this vid but still have to finish the rest. Kudos to you for pulling off this difficult task. I was going to post one of my own but when I started to compile a list I got stuck and then I was like "I can't do this, it's too hard" Whaaa…. lol After talking to you (in the comments) and watching your vids I knew we had some things in common musically- that's what first drew me to your channel. After watching your Top 20 I realized that there might be more differences in our tastes than I first thought. But that's okay variety is the spice of life, as they say. Great job and I'll be back to finish....
Thanks, Brett! I already have one regret with my list and would have swapped out one band for another I forgot, but this list was purely for fun and was a spur-of-the-moment thought I had, so I just ran with it close to the time of inception! I think we differ in our likes with a lot of 80s bands. I go for more of the alternative and synth pop/goth side of the 80s like Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Love & Rockets, the Cure, etc. and you go for more of the pop side of the 80s, which is totally awesome, too. Variety is the spice of life and its what makes the world go 'round! ~Hanna
Hi Hanna, love the start, this is my Top 20 so damit dont be a hater lol. Loved that. Nice job doing a video without new stuff. I had 19 of 20 of your bands. I am missing the db's but it is on my list to find. Peter Buck had a "jangly" guitar sound. I have most all of the stuff by REM but they came out when I was in my 20s. Harvest Moon was my first Young album. Frankly I was not a fan of his until I heard that album, it is one of my favorites. My kids also heard that one a lot lol. I have thought about videos of my top artists but man it changes constantly depending on my frame of mind. I really have a hard time committing. Talking Heads, Cramps, Jethro Tull, Miles Davis would be there but I have such varied taste. Very difficult to do. Glad you managed it. Great job saving money and making a interesting video laced with some personal stories ( always a favorite part for me). Steve
Hey Steve! Wow, we definitely have similar music taste. Must be in the Nebraska water. Hehehehe! Yeah, had to get a bit creative with some video ideas since the money is tight! Although I may be going to the record show this Sunday. Bringing a set amount of cash (great tip). So awesome that Harvest Moon is also one of your favorites. There's just something about it. So timeless. Yeah, lists can change frequently, but still fun to just take the plunge and do it! I know I already made one flub. I would swap out X with the Church. How could I forget the Church?! I have nearly all of their stuff on CD. They are still terrific! Thanks for the kind words, Steve! Peace. ~Hanna
I love The Damned. A band that I think are under appreciated on the VC and in Rock History in general. Have you ever seen them live? Every time I try to see the live something bad happens and I can't go. Great Video.
Hey there, Mark! Thanks for being here. Unfortunately I have not been lucky enough to see the Damned yet. I would love to, though. Glad you enjoyed the video! Peace. ~Hanna
Wow. Seems like it''s all the rage to be posting up ones' "Vinyl Hit Lists" up in this joint lately...but yours are the most interesting not least of all because of our general common tastes. We are joined at the hip with the Doors (1st and all), The Smiths (per your previous post in "Hatful Of Hollow" and this ones' "Queen Is Dead"), X's first two releases specifically and Neil Young's second solo effort). We respectfully but vehemently part company with Pet Sounds, The Byrds, and to a lesser degree The Who. It feels like you and I lose each other in the turn when you take a decidedly more folky route and I tend to curve into psychedelic/alt--(Were this my compendium. I would throw something like Love & Rockets' "Express" in the mix somewhere). Going to give My Bloody Valentine a shot--your tastes are well secure enough for me to take you at your word (ear) on this. Thank you for your posts, interesting and thought provoking as ever...it's so important to keep an open ear and you are a great template!
Love the diversity of taste here, but all being melodic music. Some off beat ones that would make mine are The Pretty Things (a 1964 band who did power pop with Cross Talk), Sloan, The Zombies/Argent/Blunstone, ELO, Melanie, The Easybeats/Wright, Jellyfish/Faulkner, The Marmalade, Love, Blue Oyster Cult, Big Star and The Move/Roy Wood (got their box set and the Big Star twofer at Amoeba in SF.)
Top 20: 1. The Byrds 2. The Beatles 3. R.E.M. 4. Pearl Jam 5. Juliana Hatfield 6. The Lemonheads 7. Depeche Mode 8. Flying Burrito Brothers 9. Gene Clark 10. The Cardigans 11. Kraftwerk 12. Fleetwood Mac 13. Supergrass 14. The Strokes 15. The Cranberries 16. The Kinks 17. Kings of Leon 18. Beach Boys 19. Nirvana 20. Weezer That’s probably my most listened to artists - some of them I’ve really gone off and some I love as much now as i ever did (Juliana!)
Another Juliana fan?! No way! Juliana fans are hard to come by! I saw she just got her hair cut super short! Love that you put the Cranberries in there! R.I.P. Dolores. You have excellent taste in music!
The Omaha Introvert I would love it if you would do a ranking of Julianas work - she is so prolific though it’s crazy. One of the only artists that has improved with age in my view - her work continues to be more consistent for me. Really enjoyed your Depeche Mode video - I actually live in Essex so they are my local boys!
This video was a nice suprice Hanna ¡ Have to say all those artists are favorites of mine and I have most of their discographies on vinyl, except for 3 artists. I know them but I'm not too familiar with their records (Juliana Hatfield, Veruca Salt and Aimie Man). The Smashing Pumpkins I have all their stuff on CD cause 90's vinyl is too expensive. Hard for me to do a top 20 of favorite artists cause I like too many but I'm going to leave you a top 10 of my favorite genres in rock: 1. Post-Punk 2. Proto Punk, Punk and Hardcore 3.Alternative Rock 90's 4.Alternative Rock 80's 5.New Wave and Synth Pop 6.Goth and Industrial 7.Metal and extreme metal 8. Prog 9Jangle, Power pop and Brit Pop 10.Noise, shoegaze and Dream pop. I also like non rock music like funk, soul, jazz, world music, hip hop, and lots of electronica. If you are a little short on money and want to keep buying records (who can' stop, right? lol) a great band to get into is Renaissance, 70's prog without the excess that sounds like alternative rock to me, really melodic with an amazing female singer, all their records are great and really cheap like $2.00 each on discogs
Hey Alejandro! I had to pull your comment out of the spam bucket. Not sure why it ended up there. Very cool you listed your favorite subgenres in rock. I'm not sure exactly what proto-punk is. What bands would be examples of that? For electronica, I really like Massive Attack, Portishead, Morcheeba, and Moby. Oh, thank you for bringing up Renaissance. I've heard of them, but haven't actually listened to their music yet. Since they have a female singer, they are going to the top of my list of bands to check out! Thanks, my friend! Peace. ~Hanna
hi Hanna, that's just the way I classify my collection, not sure if that's the right way to do it, I put there the influnces of punk and alternative like Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Modern Lovers, Stooges, Patti Smith, things like that. Have a weird system to classify my records, first in 3 big groups both LP's and CD´s, then in genres and subgenres, and also have a "B Section" that complements the main section, my apartment's walls are made from records and books lol. I like those electronic artists and Trip Hop is one of my favorite electronic genres like Portishead, Massive, Tricky, DJ Shadow, and like Moby, have their CD's cause they're 90's artists, 90's is maybe my favorite era in music. Think you would like Renaissance, the only thing strange about my message was this part "5 New" marked in blue, have no idea why that happened but maybe that is why ended on the spam bucket :( ok, take care Hanna ¡
thanks Hanna, maybe I should do a video about it, still dont know how You Tube or editing videos works or if I would be able to speake in english, have a new laptop, maybe I could use that, I have that "system description" written in english somewhere, I'll post it here in the meantime
I'd heard (of) them for the very first time only last year, on Fran Capitanelli's channel; Not bad at all! 😀👍
Nice list, Hanna. Solid variety of styles and eras. An exciting watch. Cheers!
Thanks, Jeff! Glad you liked this video. These are the most fun videos to do! Peace. ~Hanna
Who are this new band Coronavirus I keep hearing about.Apparently they started in China but they are getting big all over the world 🌎
Fun to watch this one and I wasn't at all surprised by the bands that you put in your top 10 at all.
Peace. ~Hanna
Hello from France.
I love Veruca Salt too. Never saw Eight arms to hold you in vinyl before ! Wow ! Lucky you! Thanks for showing.

Peace. ~Hanna
I think this is one of your best videos, Hanna. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you so much, Matt! :-) Maybe there is a top 20 list video you'll be doing in the future?! ~Hanna
Before clicking on the video i was hoping for The Smiths to make an appearance as they are my all time favourite band. I was pleasantly surprised when they immediately appeared! Great video :)
Thanks so much, Callum! Woo hoo, another Smiths fan! Couldn't leave them off of there! Hehe! I appreciate you watching this long video! Peace. ~Hanna
The Smiths are my favourite band of all time. So, it's great to hear you talk about them first (even though they're 20th on your list!
1. Black Sabbath
2. Blue Oyster Cult
3. Rush
4. Pink Floyd
5. Porcupine tree
6. Alan Parsons Project
7. The Damned
8. Alice in Chains
9. Aerosmith 70s
10.Metallica ( early)
11. Fleetwood Mac
12. The Beatles
13. Golden Earring
14. Genesis/Phil Collins solo
15. Moody Blues
16. Budgie
17. The Police
18. Styx
19. Rolling stones
20. Deep Purple
Peace. ~Hanna
A lot of diversity here, strong artists from top to bottom! But......no Zeppelin? Cheers.
Love your choices. I’ll have to agree with you on X. Love “Los Angeles” so much. If you haven’t read the book “Under the big black song”, it’s a book about the LA punk scene. Great book and great video keep it up!
Ah, cool! I definitely need to check out that book. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I appreciate you checking out my top 20! Peace.
New subscriber...I really enjoyed your list, especially seeing Big Star and Veruca Salt get some well-deserved love.
Stella (of Stella’s Encounters) and I were recently sharing our mutual love of R.E.M., and I was surprised someone so young in China would even know who they are!
it is always fun to see and hear others favorites.....as your list is nice and unique. I still never seen Robyn’s Dream of Trains vinyl. cheers, steve
Thanks, Steve! Would love to see your top 20 list. Robyn is very hard to find in the wild. in fact, I've only seen one album of his locally and it was too expensive for me to get. I found it on eBay for $4.99 and was satisfied. :-) Peace. ~Hanna
I love lists!! Favorite bands, favorite albums, best of (fill in year), and especially when people go into details on each selection. Thank you!!
Lists are so fun, right? Sometimes it is hard making them, but so worth it! Thanks, Mike!
Thanks so much! Glad you liked my list and my videos! It means a lot. Peace. Hanna
Glad to see The Damned getting a mention. "Strawberries" is their finest moment and Captain Sensible an underrated guitarist. It was terrific to see "Evil Spirits" being so strong 36 years after "Strawberries" came out.
I love, love, love Strawberries as well! I treasure my copy. Brilliant band! Captain Sensible forever!
I think it might have been only the first run of Strawberries but they came with an actual Strawberry scent! Mine kept the whiff for years and I was sad when all the smell finally wore off, LOL!
It's called The Who icon
I think you are a beautiful rocker chick to
I too love the 'Strawberries' album! 😆)
Hi Hanna
I enjoyed your video of your favourite artists.
Peace. ~Hanna
Great list Hanna. Not sure I could decide on a list of my own top 20. Stressful, all those decisions! 😁
Thanks, James! I've always had a mental list of my top 20 handy, but putting them in ranking order was the most difficult part! I had a great deal of fun with it, though! ~Hanna
You've got me thinking about though. Might have to work on it.
Thanks
Peace. ~Hanna
Really cool list, thank you for the video.
So glad you liked this video! Making lists is super fun, but sometimes a bit challenging!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I am sure that took a lot of time. Since you are excellent at expressing yourself, it was easy to understand why you liked each album.
Thank you! Glad my passion for this music comes through! That's my goal!
Awesome list of bands, Hanna! time to check some of them out!
Thanks, Tony!!! All rock except for Depeche Mode! I appreciate you watching! ✌️👍🎶😊
Another great list. Thank you. Definitely going to check out Veruka Salt (sp) and The Damned. And Julia Hatfield.
Awesome, James! I don't think you'll be disappointed with those bands/artists! Happy sampling!
Peace.
I love your list! So good! Thanks for the video. Great taste! Goodness....
Thanks so much, Glenn! We do have very similar music taste! :-) Hope all is well. Peace. ~Hanna
Peace. ~Hanna
@@TheOmahaIntrovert oh yes I love The Church ! I think my top 20 list would be to predictable..lol
I guess I need to watch more of your previous videos then, because I’m not sure who’d all fill your top 20!
This Dutch TV footage from a couple days ago is pretty good:
ua-cam.com/video/kmx72YrwFb4/v-deo.html
I was so blown away with Gini’s drumming when I saw them in Dublin in November that I immediately ran up to her as she left the stage after their encore just so I could tell her how awesome I think she is! I wound up talking to Gini for an hour then talked to Pip herself for about 30 minutes after that...much to my wife’s chagrin! 😄 (I married a Swedish woman that’s why I’m living here now.)
The fans in Dublin even chanted “Gini!
~Hanna
Nice top 20 list. Glad to see Robyn Hitchcock on there, of course! And I couldn't agree more with your #1 pick. Great stuff, Hanna! Take care.
Thank you, Jeff! Appreciate you taking the time to watch this long-ass video! Looking forward to your next one. Peace.
20 Dead Can Dance
19 Mazzy Star

16 New Model Army
15 Stan Ridgway/Wall of Voodoo

13 The Church
12 The Smiths
11 Siouxsie and the Banshees
10 Sonic Youth
9 Fish Karma
8 The Jesus and Mary Chain
7 Nina Nastasia
6 The Doors
5 Robyn Hitchcock (plus Egyptians and Soft Boys)
4 The Billy Nayer Show
3 X
2 Sparklehorse
1 XTC
Honorable mentions: Magazine, Wire, Laurie Anderson, The Sound, Dirty Three, Mercury Rev, The Residents, Alice Donut, PJ Harvey.
Great video. Lots of ideas for me to look out for.
Thank you so very much, Mark! Would love to see who you choose for your top 20! Peace. ~Hanna
Solid list. I was on board with a number of them.
Thanks for watching, Brandon. This was my favorite video to do.
Peace. ~Hanna
Big Star records sunk like a lead balloon in the US when released. They have been very influential with hundreds of bands the last 40 years.
Hi Hanna, a good list. Has me inspired to make a similar list. Have a good week. - Steve
Thanks, Steve! I appreciate you watching that long video. It was really fun for me to do. Ooo, I look forward to hearing about your list! Peace. ~Hanna
You have impeccable taste. Big Star, Doors, Byrds, REM, X, are some of the greats. Strange Days is the best Doors record. Great channel.
So glad you agree with me that Strange Days is the Doors best record! Love it to pieces! I appreciate the kind words on my channel! Be well.
Great video Hanna, really enjoyed it. The Doors are my favourite band of all time. The Who are a great band also.

I highly recommend Dream it Down and Cold Feeling by The Underground Lovers - Genres covered: Dream Pop, Shoegaze, Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Alternative Dance, Indietronica.
Peace. Hanna
Really interesting selection of bands,.
Thank you so very much! This was just a blast to do! Thanks for watching. Peace. ~Hanna
I don't think I could do a list like that. But I enjoyed watching your list. Many of the artists are new to me. 😊
You could do it, I'm sure, Carsten! Just don't overthink it! :-)
Yeah, that could be the way to do it, because I definitely WILL overthink it 😁
Happy Tuesday morn to yee!
Peace. ~Hanna
New subscriber. You have great taste in music Hannah. Keep up the good work.
😉😉 Peace. Hanna
Hi Hanna.. You put a lot of thought into your picks.. You made me proud with Jimi Hendrix, Doors, Byrds, Who and a few others from MY era..
Thanks so much, Garen. Oh yeah, I love those 60s groups. 👍👍👍👌😊
I Like Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Sugar and the Replacements as well. Glad you know about Kleenex/Lilliput, Raincoats, Slits and Roches too.
Veruca Salt was one of my first shows in a "nightclub". That would have been the American Thighs tour I believe with the Muffs and Triple Fast Action. I also went to the Eight Arms tour that you speak of with the same openers :)
That definitely would've been a kickass American Thighs show with that lineup! Right on! Cheers! Veruca Salt love!
Great list, depeche mode great band one of my favourites
Oh, how I love Depeche Mode. They are still my solid #2! Thanks for watching! Peace.
I only know a few songs from Depeche Mode , so I must look more closely at their catalog . The same with the Damned . Thank you for the suggestions .
You bet, John! Oh, I did a whole fangirl video on Depeche Mode. "Just can't get enough" of them. Pardon the silly pun! This was a fun video for me to film. Some of these have shuffled a bit, no doubt!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I will enjoy the silence of Depeche Mode ( now that really is a bad pun )
😂😂😂😂
1. The Beatles
2. R.E.M.
3. The Kinks
4. The Pixies
5. The Rolling Stones
6. The Ramones
7. The Church
8. Elvis Costello
9. U 2
10. The Velvet Underground
11. Bob Dylan
12. The Replacements
13. Bruce Springsteen
14. The Smiths
15. David Bowie
16. The Strokes
17. Wilco
18. The Cure
19. Husker Du
20A. The Psychedelic Furs
Peace. ~Hanna
Thank you for reminding me that I'd wanted to check out Robyn Hitchcock already a while ago! 😄👍
You bet! By the way, I might be revisiting this topic in a future video pondering if I still have this same list!
See ya.. Stay 😎
Thank you so very much for those recommendations! 👍🙌 Yeah, I really enjoy the Three O’clock. Criminally underrated! 🎶😊
The 1983 The The LP! Uncertain smile !
Good to see the Smiths on your list. I like them too. I would have them higher on the list but at least they’re on there. 👍
I need to take a nap before work so I will watch this tonight at work. I'm thinking of doing something similar.
Perfect!!!! I don’t know what it is about lists, but I really like making them! Oh, I hope you do a top 20 video, too! Rest up! Hanna
It is always cool to hear peoples personal favorites and the reasons why.
I love that “Black and White” is your intro song
Thanks! I appreciate you watching this older video! Cheers, Adam!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert bear with me, I’m watching the occasional old video in between my deep diving into classic albums. Your vids are fantastic.
Damnation. An authentically eclectic list.
If you love Loveless, Darling Buds' Erotica has some serious bangers on it.
I picked up Erotica recently on CD and showed in my last video. I have much more from the Darling Buds coming soon! 😊😊
well done on your top 20.....mine would change daily, in fact i think it would be impossible for me to pick a top 20, i am hearing 'new' music all the time, and checking out 'new' bands, when i say new i mean new to me.....there is so much i havent heard yet, cheers
Cheers!
That Aimee Mann is 1995, but I'm stunned you chose that. I bought that disc not long after it dropped. I still visit certain tracks.
Hey Kev! Thanks for watching! Oh yeah, I love Aimee's I'm With Stupid album. It's a really solid, overlooked release from her. Peace. ~Hanna
Thank you, my friend! No worries on not feeling comfortable about making any lists yet. It's just a fun thing to ponder when the time is right. :-)
Awesome channel Hanna
You are so nice! Thank you!
Hehe! Peace.
i just got The Humpty Dance single , original 1989 , and John Mayer Heavier Things , in the mail to day , its always fun having packages waiting for you
Yes, getting packages in the mail is one of the highlights of life!
Yes I remember Days of the New! - sorry, I just had to say that.
I bought that album with the lightening tree (as my friends called it) on the cover, when it came out.
Hey Richard. Yeah, really sad story about Travis. He couldn't seem to get his act together. Hope he's sober now but who knows...
Hei, Hanna! I'm not a big fan of "lists" especially if I would "have" to make them by myself but I find it interesting to watch other people's lists.
Your list included some band that I like very much. The Doors are very high on my "list". :) As a some kind of guitar player myself, of course Jimi Hendrix is something else.
Maybe I should make some kind of list someday,
Jarkko / MyVinylBar
Peace. ~Hanna
Smash It Up!
My Aimee Mann's fave is Charmer Album, She was missing her green-nail-polished right pinky toe in what
movie?
Charmer is fabulous. We need vinyl reissues! Big Lebowski, right?! :-)
@@TheOmahaIntrovert yep! Thanks
Nice list, there’s a lot I’ll have to look up.
Thank you, Michael! I appreciate you watching! Enjoy sampling some of the bands/artists you were unfamiliar with! 😊 Hanna
Will definitely have to make my own list
Please do! That would be awesome! Looking forward to hearing who is on yours!
Already got my list! I might even surprise you with who is on my list!
Woo hoo!!!! When will the video be up?!
Unsure at the moment. I'm waiting to hear back from a DJing job. If I get it, the video won't be up until after the weekend probably!
Cool! Hope you get the job if you really want it! 😄

Hey, you have a cool system of organizing your music collection. Sounds like it works very well! Wow, would love to browse through your collection!
thanks Hanna, maybe I should do a video about it, still dont know how You Tube or editing videos works or if I would be able to speake in english, have a new laptop, maybe I could use that, I have that "system description" written in english somewhere, I'll post it here in the meantime
