JamcalX _ I agree, but I felt Ava and her Mentor Oprah intention is what ruined the film before people even saw the film...it's unfortunate, it's like you walk past a crime coming home from work and the police arrives and grabs everyone...lol...
I think if Ava had other talented people involved, maybe some unknowns...it probably "Artistically" would have came off different.. without her mentor in her ear...it has that agenda juice out the gate, and people are like I see it, just because they see a group of women and especially the times we're living in...
it's just unfortunate, and not fair.. but I guess in time

Oh look the movie with terrible trailers is actually really terrible, what a shocker! I know trailer quality =/= movie quality but bad trailers are a really good indicator. If they can't make an exciting/intriguing 2 mins then feature length can't be much better. Shame though, the book seems really good, I'll probably give it a spin sometime.

savangray The movie changed practically everything about the book. Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which aren’t even in the book. The whole book ties God in a lot and uses angels and such. The book was written by a Christian author but I’m very upset they changed everything about the book.

The book had nothing to do with self love, and in fact, eschewed the subject, making it clear that the message of the story was about family and faith. If Madeline L'Engle weren't dead, she'd be mortified by this film. It is the existential murder of her work and message.

People always forget that the book really wasn't very good to begin with. It became acclaimed because of it boldness, not because of the quality of the story or its execution. It's really no surprise that in a day and age when the story is not particularly original, theres nothing (outside diversity of course) that makes it a draw.

This breaks my heart. L'Engle's "Wrinkle in Time" was the first science fiction I was ever exposed to as a 4th grader. It was a thrilling read and a departure from the fantasy of Oz books, Narnia, or Dahl. There was a lackluster TV version a decade or so ago, but this sounded so promising - until now. I am a firm believer that books need to be freely adapted into films and live on their own steam -- but the dread I felt seeing Mrs. Whatsit, Who, & Which looking like cast-offs from "The Wiz" seems to be accurate (remember poor Lena Horne decked out like a blue Xmas tree?) Alas.

That somehow the father returning (maybe after his mid-life crisis fling was over) was "her doing". She imagines this fictional adventure as her coping mechanism. Maybe?

Perhaps what's really missing is the reasons that would sustain a love of self and an explanation of what it means to be a truly good person, not just a nice person. From what I remember reading the book, the resolve of the plot felt very unearned, as if all you have to do in life is show your good intentions and eventually evil will succumb to it. And that is not the way it works in real life.
    Good review GR.

I haven't seen it yet, but my biggest problem was when they announced the runtime. I hoped it would be longer, but I was still hoping they could pull something off regardless. Now it does seem that the runtime does hurt the movie, and I'm even more sad it couldn't have been longer. Why did they want to make it so short, when it sounds like it should have been longer?

I didn't want to watch this movie because of Oprah, not happy how she treated Mo'Nique.

Waited to watch this on streaming on the basis of your review, Grace, and I have to say, I’m glad I saved my ticket money. It’s not a *bad* movie, per se, but the director’s ambitions were clearly greater than her vision. And I have a feeling part of it is the same *apolitical* criticism you’ve had for Kathleen Kennedy: she wasn’t a fan of the source material, so she felt too free to change it.
A Wrinkle in Time has a lot of devoted fans (including my wife, who considers it one of her favorite childhood books) and has felt robbed by *both* of Disney’s adaptations.

Sometimes you just get a certain feel about a movie; I think we all knew it was going to be well intentioned but not hit the mark. Also, Grace, haven't seen your videos in a while, not sure how long you've been going with this current look, but it's great!

From what I've seen and what you've said, it definitely seems like this was meant to be a TV show. A full TV season being squeezed into a movie would explain the pacing issues and cut scenes.

I reread the book recently (it was one of my favourites growing up) and as soon as I finished it, I had a feeling this movie wasn’t going to turn out well. It’s an amazing book, in my opinion, but I just don’t think it translates well to screen.

I've stated this before and I'll state it again, from the very first trailer it just seemed like one of those NBC two/three-part specials (e.g. Merlin, The Odyssey and Gulliver's Travels). I just never bought into it being an actual film.

So in the book and stage play, the main villain's name is IT. Considering the current pop culture, that would have been a ballsy yet amazing crossover for Disney had they dared to go that direction. The villain even has red eyes like Pennywise!!

Omg you’re right I didn’t even notice that when I watched the movie! The scene with Meg explaining 5th dimension with the string was cut out. Gah, that’s disappointing...

I wish they kept the science aspect that the book had, the characters that Oprah, Reese, and Mindy play, in the book, were supposed to explain thought processes, and how to think in terms of broad abstract concepts, like Physics or Chemistry.
The book was more of a promotion of being creative, this movie feels like the opposite.

Wow this was scathing!!! An excellent analysis, but scathing nonetheless. I did say last week to a friend that this movie looked wrought with trite themes and sappiness from the trailer, but you really took it to task. I’ll see it for myself to form my own opinion, but this kind of validated some of my worst suspicions.
