Uh, Grace, Furiosa in Fury Road wasn't devoid of hope. She was so optimistic that she dragged Max and the wives with her halfway across the desert in the hopes of finding a home that she hadn't seen in years. Also, let's not forget it was Max who said, "Hope is a mistake," to which Furiosa responded by walking away in disgust. Even after losing her home, she remained optimistic and tried to start a new one.
Something George miller has done since the beginning, in the first mad max where his wife and kid are run down, we don’t really see it happen, just the aftermath. The aftermath can feel just as powerful.
If you have an eye for it, the Green Place was actually shown at the end of Fury Road, when the massive tanker truck crashes at the barren stone arch. The same stone arch is shown at the beginning of Furiosa, but instead it is a paradise. It is the Green Place rendered lifeless. Which leads one to think, even if Furiosa wasn't kidnapped, she would have still lost The Green Place. Also, here's an interesting Easter Egg: MadMax is watching Furiosa from atop a cliff, after she stumbles and wanders to the Stone Citadel.
Saying this is 'not a work of art' is a ridiculous and insulting thing to say, even more-so when comparing it to Sin City and Watchmen (two beautiful, highly artistic films - elevating the standard of comic/graphic novel adaptations). Even if you don't like it as much as Fury Road, it doesn't make it's style and artistry any less impressive.
She’s saying there’s no substance in the movie like most action blockbusters. It fails to be an artsy film because there’s no depth to the movie, but it also fails to be a blockbuster movie because its graphic imagery will turn away a lot of people.
@@maxyorke2453 it is so frustrating hearing someone use an insult as an explanation. If youre going to criticize, explain yourself. Otherwise, you become your own insult.
I loved Hemsworth as a villian. He was amazing and disturbing. It was kinda weird looking at some of the CGI during some chases. It still makes Fury Road more memorable as it blends in better. I hope Miller wraps up this trilogy with a sequel featuring Hardy. 🙏
0:55 I don't think that attempt is the lead up to the events of Fury Road, but instead her first attempt to escape. In Fury Road, Furiosa says she's tried to escape with the wives before.
They should have brought back Charlize Theron for at least an extended cameo at the end, have her transform during a montage from Joy to Theron (glimpses of other battles, etc.) and have her lead the brides out. Having Miller take that moment at the end from her portrayal feels like a disservice to Charlize.
To expensive and gain nothing. The people who love the movie will go, Theron or not, and paying her a fortune to get nothing makes no sense. If they are planning another one is even more important: you don't want to be paying for Stars that bring nothing in terms of money.

I think the brutality served the story. It was part of the reminder of what world we were engaged in. I liked that there were so many characters, not JUST Furiosa. Hemsworth was brilliant. I noticed a lot of the time the music completely disappeared and the sounds of the scenes took over, and I appreciated that.
exatly my thoughts, that world is dangerous, MAKE IT FEEL THAT WAY! The stakes are high, people are insane they will do insane things, it's just an animal world.
I think it was in service of the story as well. The Mad Max movies have always been about how our hero hangs on to their humanity as the world around them loses it. Like in Road Warrior, Max is a man struggling with his humanity as the two tribes lose their own.
I am not so sure if I can share the same critiques and sentiments about this movie. It is evident that the movie abandons the action packed scenes turned to 11 for more slow paced story telling, but the end result is a very compelling and enjoyable story of loss, survival, revenge, and implied redemption. I loved it, i thought it was quite fantastic, and getting caught up in little details that can be easily implied is silly. Like, i get the map thing. But we know from Fury Road that Furiousa knows the Green Place is somewhere east(?) she just can't find the exact place because, spoiler, her map arm is gone. But... She had that map tattooed for years, I'm sure she sort of memorized part of the location but without great detail. Moreover, losing her arm can be implied as her abandoning her idea of home for something else. The small holes and inconsistencies you are finding are also the aspects that allow more poetic, creative, and free interpretation. Did Max save Furiosa and therefore met her before the events of Fury Road? We dont know, but what if... Great movie! Totally recommend it.
I so loved seeing Max on the cliff face just like the start of the 2015 video game which is nice as that game is a prequel to Fury Road and this movie is set before that. (it was some options menus background shot)

It is important to point out that the scene where Praetorian Jack is being dragged behind a motorcycle was also done in the 1979 original Mad Max movie.
I agree with Grace about Dementus being the best thing and the comparison to Waltz's Landa. I'd also compare him to fellow Aussie Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight. The signature character in the movie for sure.
I can’t disagree more about the notion that this isn’t as “artistic”. Fury Road was loud and bombastic often drawing you in on the visuals and mayhem. I love that the approach here was to pull back and be thoughtful about how to approach the action. When Dementus’s gang is attacking a vehicle and the camera is behind him watching them, no music, just the far away sounds of the attack going on, that was such an inventive way to show the action
I agree with you on most of this, definitely suffers from coming after the magnificent Fury Road. Couldn’t help but laugh when you said how you couldn’t believe Dementus had the will (a giant bulletproof off-roading vehicle with massive tires) to catch up to Furiosa and Praetorian Jack (in their little car designed to hold dirt bikes)
Furiosa could have added ten or fifteen minutes of character scenes that also clearly demonstrate how much time is passing for Furiosa. Parts of the film felt fast forwarded through. Leading Furiosa directly into Fury Road seemed rushed to me. A full HBO mini-series of this Furiosa story is the character arc vibe I prefer but HBO series don't show up in IMAX theaters (yet).
Saw it last night and it was awesome. It was so Brutal too. I also have a couple of VERY small picky issues, but I'm so pleased that George Miller is giving us these epic wasteland films. No one else does. Hooray for Australian cinema. I really want Mad Max : Wasteland now.
One of the most jaw-dropping moments to me was when Dementus and his gang were getting sniped by Furiosa and he pulled one of his men in front of him to get shot, human shield style. Then, while she was reloading, he fired the RPG at her. Such a unique way for his character to act and was such a one-up on her. SO GOOD!
That scene , and how he was able to discern that killing the decoy war boys would increase their chances to have the gates open. He was a great villain.
Fury road was definitely better in my opinion. Furiosa had too much going on with characters other than furiosa. Too much getting captured escaping, going back by making stupid decisions. Rinse and repeat. Bad CGI. Didn't like helmsworths comedic tone. The voiceovers at the end to speed up the story. Movie felt like it dragged on. There's some cool scenes and parts of the story didn't come together for me. It's like 6 out of 10 for me. Not bad but not good.
Did you have see HOPE AND GLORY - A Mad Max Fan Film? 275 filmmakers from 5 continents gave their all with real stunts, a real orchestra and most importantly, real heart.
I felt exactly the same about the ending. Leading right into Fury Road really bothered me. Showing adult Furiosa so late into the movie, Charlize easily could have played her or cameoed at the end. Miller saying the de-aging fx aren't there yet enough to make it convincing, but then using the same fx to make young Furiosa look more like Anya, just seems like an excuse now to not have Charlize back for whatever reason. It felt like the same thing in Fury Road where Mel Gibson could have easily played that Max and nothing would have been different. The arm felt like something that was leading up to a bigger way of her losing her arm. I thought either Dementus or Joe were going to cut it off to use the map. Wasted opportunity. Praetorian Jack felt more like Max to me than Tom Hardy did. He was great for the little bit hes in the movie. I hope Miller makes one more and it doesn't take another 10 yrs.
6:44 The movie did not need to indulge itself in such attrocities and horrible people but it can't shy away from them entirely because that would feel cheap and disingenious due to the setting. If you wanna put your story on a setting like this, you cant shy away from such elements entirely
Just got home from the IMAX witnessing. I want to inform the audience that MAD MAX and DOOF Warrior are both in the movie. This was an achievement of epic proportions. Anya is wonderful. Ayala Brown was wonderful. Praetorian Jack, absolutely awesome. Dementus absolutely, awesome and demented (In an intelligent way). Who cares about Charlize Theron Grace? She has her own movie called Fury Road. Judge a movie on what it is Grace. Not based on other predeterminations. 10/10 I cannot recommend this movie any higher. This was AWESOME! Furiosa!
The movie was to fixated with its feminist vision, showing a female utopia in the first half and - later leaning in to the cruel and demented behavior of the evil men in the other half. That's why it was more brutal than fury road. Snd unnecessarily so, it was fueled by feminist anger.
I do feel mislead by the Furiosa trailer. A lot of the elements in this movie would belong in a horror film, but the trailer does not show ANY of that at all and makes it look like a pure action flick. I liked it, but a lot of the people I brought to the theater were traumatized.
Also, Dementus’ white clothing reminded me of paratroopers, who sometimes used their parachutes as shelters and such after landing. The SpecOps museum in NC has a wedding dress made from a parachute a trooper carried across Europe.
WOW, to fall so low after Fury Road.. there were hints on that after the trailers but I was shocked how bad this movie looked like comparing to Fury Road. It got 6 Oscars for f*** sake... and this one? Not only so much scenes were shot on a green screen, they couldn't even edited it out nicele - like wtf? CGI looked better 20 years ago... And what's with that weird speed up movements in many scenes for characters and vehicles? I enjoyed the story for what it is, but this movie lost like most of the artistic flair Fury Road had.. which is weird, as it is made by the same people... it looks like Hollywood bosses told Miller to cut corners and he went all in with this.. so disappointing..
The audio was horrible I could barely hear the dialogue. I was waiting for epic road battles with roaring metal, the stuff that made fury road so memorable! Let alone the lack of story and depth..I could care less about any of the characters even Furiousa!
I really enjoyed this film but there definitely seems to be a missing ingredient from this film, but it’s still a great film to watch! And surprisingly funny
I liked the reveal of how she lost the arm but I too was expecting to see her have to get rid of it to protect the location because it had the map. George subverted expectations there. But I also think there is an emotional beat missing at the end. But maybe that’s just where Fury Road comes in to take the story from there. Chris stole this movie just like how Charlize stole Fury Road. We’ve come full circle lol
I feel this movie has the "prequel for streaming" vibes, it had a strong start but having to end right at the beginning of Fury Road really hurts the finale, it's like they didn't know how to end.
Also, how secret and remote the green place was in the first place to the point where dementus and the immortal had no knowglege about! They freaking ruled the the desert but never ever stumbled upon it even by mistake?
Chopping her arm off instead of losing it the way she did would've been a lil too "mary-sue". Glad they showed Furiosa going through hardships and coming out the other side stronger and wiser.
Could not agree more with your review & critiques. Just saw it this afternoon and your arm take is great. The story aimed to be epic, and fell short - as there are just too many side scenes that don't serve the story. And the abundance of CG really stood out vs Fury Road, where it the CG was woven in with great care and style. I've rewatched Fury Road over a dozen times and I still love it - but Furiosa, as much fun as it is in spots, might be a one and done for me. Cheers.
Just watched last night. LOVED IT!!! Was so blown away and woke up immediately thinking of and laughing at recollecting Chris Hemsworth’s role. I do agree- they missed a good plot point with the map on the arm. It was became nothing after being a focal point for so long. Otherwise- violence and all- I absolutely loved this flick!
It was boring, not rewatchable status! I loved Fury Road, but these characters were forgettable and could relate to anyone. I couldn’t wait until it was over.
Something "deep" like perhaps good seed vs bad seed - it depends, on the good soil or maybe a good seed does grow out in bad soil...The Australian Aboriginal culture and with its big chunk of desert, is already very unique - those are the vibes characters are producing I guess!
Deserves more theatrical viewers and box office! I hope they find a way to do another. I throught doing a prequel was a mistake, and maybe it was. A sequel with Fury Road characters seems unlikely dt the reported onset drama btw Hardy & Theron & this movie's lack of BO success (so far).
Pretty sure some amount of time passed between the war on the wasteland, Furiosa capturing Dementus and what she did to him and her deciding to sneak the wives away from Immortan Joe later on that leads into "Fury Road". However, they did show a cameo of Max watching Furiosa drop to the ground, after Jack's death and losing her arm. 😵💫
I think mad max was super chaotic and very action packed in there, here it’s more like an exposition, like I can’t put my finger on it yet but I kinda feel these movies compliment each other (scene wise) like mad max was super artistic and epic because all the men were crazy about that, being epic and fight, but furiosa just wants to go back home but has to do what she has to do to return with her mind clear and cool
because they do that to movies and entertainment all the time specifically video games tv shows comics, books they do that to entertainment and the like the match all the time it is not that mad max is in there or that he has to be in there it is in the mad max universe that's why they call it that with that that is why they say that with that the name is is in there with the universe that is why they call it that with that the name is not in there for the character to be is in there that is why they call it that with that
I gasped when Grace revealed how the movie ends... despicable that they would end the movie like that (side note, that very moment was covered in a prequel comic)
There has to be time passing because Immortan Joe has a completely different set of wives at the beginning of the movie. It would have been nice for Charlize Theron to be in the last shot but Idon’t think it was necessary.
I think the tree and arm dismemberment are both symbolic of furuiosa lost hope. She demented her homes mementos just because she wants revenge more than
Good film, just too long. I fell asleep during some parts. Will watch again when it's on streaming. First hours was solid but I think the film got a little to ambitious.
I never watched Fury Road, and I must say this movie was alot to take in and adjust to, and not always in the best ways. It’s definitely an experience!
Well its a post apocaliptic world. Why would people respect each other and think that the world would not be a disturbing screwed up place at that point. When civilisation crumbles, so does humanity. We revert back to our dangerous and primitive instincts.
While I enjoyed the film the most comedic aspect of the whole series is the fact that although it is framed around a society void of resources and food they are all so wasteful and foolish in relation to those scarce resources most especially the fuel to power all those motorcycles in their multiple mad dashes across the desert wasteland and that lengthy torture scene of Praetorian Jack.
Both Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are prima donas that’s why George Miller replaced Charlize for not trusting in him. Who knows if Tom Hardy is going to come back?

ANYA IS A STAR!
Did you have see HOPE AND GLORY - A Mad Max Fan Film? 275 filmmakers from 5 continents gave their all with real stunts, a real orchestra and most importantly, real heart.
FURIOSA WAS SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In Fury Road, she didn't really need a map. She just drove east. In the general eastern direction. Just drive east for a very long time.
The only issue I had with the arm was that I thought Hemsworth’s character would have seen the map and have an ah huh moment.
The map was gone by that point. Road rash
what disturbing stuff?
The maggots & cannibalism scenes
Furiosa!
8/10 for me. Very entertaining. 👍 Mad Max fan since early 80s.
The movie was to fixated with its feminist vision, showing a female utopia in the first half and - later leaning in to the cruel and demented behavior of the evil men in the other half. That's why it was more brutal than fury road. Snd unnecessarily so, it was fueled by feminist anger.
Despite the all the criticisms of Furiosa, my opinion of Chris Hemsworth as an actor has quadrupled 👍
Agreed, he's fantastic in the film - and thank you!
Charlize Theron was the problem. Not Tom Hardy. Even Zoe Kravitz admitted thus.
This is FURRiosa weekend....
Garfield and Furiosa Mad Max Saga
Mad Cat Saga.
THEY SHOULD MAKE MAD MAX THE WASTELAND NOW!
There were sped up movements in Fury Road as well
It felt like a very different movie I agree.
Loved it!!!! The ending was shocking
Didn't have the epic action chases like in Fury Road. Like you can tell George Miller didn't even try to top them. That was disappointing.
Excellent balanced and nuanced review Grace.
You really delved more into the psyche and motivations than others that I’ve seen .
I ENJOYED THE MOVIE!
We’ve come full circle lol
hated that the end went right into fur road- love that the recast made no sense and its the first thing you said. It didn't make sense
I feel this movie has the "prequel for streaming" vibes, it had a strong start but having to end right at the beginning of Fury Road really hurts the finale, it's like they didn't know how to end.
Hemsworth’s nose 👃 prosthetic was the best part of the movie.
They didn’t show how the green place was destroyed. Wack
Its the wastelands...nothing lasts forever here. Especially after 20 years or something.
We already know what Happened to it from Fury Road
Cheers.
Seeing it at lincoln sq dolby on sunday. Can’t wait!
Why are you seeing the Spoiler review, you just spoiled the whole movie for yourself
@@johnnynepa2000 bc i don’t give a fuck
@@onikasvaccine3207 sheesh why so aggressive, anyways I’m the same I could care less about the Mad Max franchise
I just came from there and saw it in IMAX my hearing is still ringing
@@MarcusSinclair2 hope you enjoyed it
The movie felt like a fever dream where we were in and out of consciousness… but in a good way.
19:22 She looks like Lena Headey's Sarah Connor
they should have brought back Charlize as Furiosa in Act 3 and she meets the "Anya Furiosa" and we learn this is a MULTIVERSE story.
Tom Burke has the lead role in the CB Strike series on Cinemax, if interested in more of his work.
Why put mad Max in the title if these movies have nothing to do with mad Max. Just call it something else
because they do that to movies and entertainment all the time specifically video games tv shows comics, books they do that to entertainment and the like the match all the time it is not that mad max is in there or that he has to be in there it is in the mad max universe that's why they call it that with that that is why they say that with that the name is is in there with the universe that is why they call it that with that the name is not in there for the character to be is in there that is why they call it that with that
This movie takes place in the Mad Max universe
Because marketing
I’m very angry that they didn’t cast Charlize Theron
I just watched the movie. Furiosa was not able to go home after defeating Dementus because she lost her map arm.
But she knows immediately where to go in Fury Road anyway
I gasped when Grace revealed how the movie ends... despicable that they would end the movie like that
(side note, that very moment was covered in a prequel comic)
well, it was expected. She doesnt die 😄
@@RadicalValkyrie lol but to actually replace Charlize with Anya? dumb, so very dumb
@@JoseBraghiroliI swear that was a Charlize / Anya cgi hybrid or something
@@b.a.carroll2111or a stand in? We never saw the face
@@kp1x understand sarcasm?
Just saw it yesterday night and my theatre was full 😊 which added to excitement. Had a good time.
I thought it was Charlize at the end with the wives. Also, mangling her arm she also lost her map home.
Well its a post apocaliptic world. Why would people respect each other and think that the world would not be a disturbing screwed up place at that point.
When civilisation crumbles, so does humanity. We revert back to our dangerous and primitive instincts.
Facts.
so what happened to mel gibson? 😂
Well, he buried Mad Max in 1985 with Beyond Thunderdome.
Totally agreed!! Great review!
A lot of time must have gone by in order for the he Gas and Bullet towns to be rebuilt by Fury Road.
It's a masterpiece, imo. This movie made me cry, because how good everything crafted and paced.
FURY ROAD IS ONE OF THE BEST MAD MAX MOVIES!
The losing arm is one the coolest things I ever seen
Both Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are prima donas that’s why George Miller replaced Charlize for not trusting in him. Who knows if Tom Hardy is going to come back?
