    Between 2009 and 2021, Olympus (now OM System) released six premium digital PEN’s: The E-P1, E-P2, E-P3, E-P5, PEN-F and E-P7. As an Olympus enthusiast and a PEN lover ever since the first E-P1 was launched, I have long dreamed of owning this complete line. Now that I have, I thought it was time for a video wherein I take a look at all 6 cameras next to each other, compare their global features as well as share my overall opinion on each of the bodies.

    Hi Bart.
    My first camera was a Pen F half frame with a 40mm f1.4 lens in 1975. It was a great intro to photography.
    Enjoy the rest of your day.

    I have never had any of the premium pens but I had Epm2, e-pl5, e-pl6 and e-pl7 and out of these I really loved e-pl7. It was more than enough - the thing that I missed on all previous ones was the control dial, which 7 has, WiFi was a nice extra. I miss this camera a lot if you can miss inanimate objects 😂

    I started with an ep-1 when it launched. Found the lack of evf a problem out doors. I went through a few Panasonics and EM’s to get to my current em1.2, which is a great camera. Great review, very helpful. I’ll keep an eye on eBay for a bargain EP5, articulated screen or F with its evf.

    I have a Pen-F… It’s great despite its slightly annoying four-way switch on the back. I’ve been using it for years and now I have and OMD em1 mk3, and very new and brilliant OMS5, the Pen-F is so lightweight, small and classy looking, it’s great for casual use, and as a body to my vintage Pentax lenses, and other more outre art lenses, and ultra-wide-angle stuff. It’s an absolute beauty, and attracts a lot of comments and interest from observers and enthusiasts.

    My favourite is the Pen-F. So much that I bought a second one. Unfortunetaly, price is even raising lately since there is no follow-up model. I wish there was a 25MP version. For a long time, besides my full-frame equipment, I used my Pen-F for everything, mostly adapting old manual lenses. I added a cage for better grip and get more weight (imagine me throwing it around after a trip with my full-frame equipment, it weighs almost nothing ;-)). I rarely use the color profiles, but I bought it mostly for the sensor size and vintage looks. Thanks for the video!

    The Pen-F all the way, especially after the firmware upgrade of 2020. I had to add a leather grip through, as the camera is too small and slippery to use comfortably. The grip also extend slightly the camera in height giving some space for the pinky finger.
    Feature wise, with the exception of 4K (but Pens are not made for that), it is still the most advanced Pen camera ever made. the only weak point to me is the rear thumb grip that degrades in time, but fortunately I was able to pick four spares for chips.
    Unfortunately the firmware was in such a poor state when the camera was released that the reviews were harsh and killed any market or the F.
    Olympus blamed the camera while they had only their own idiotic marketing department to blame for rushing out the camera before the software was ready; after the new firmware was released (4 years later!!!) the camera feels like a new product, to the same degree the EM1MkII was reborn.
    I don't like the cheap feel of the EP7, which has worse performances then the elder sibling and a worse battery.

      @@bartjanverhoef MUCH improved autofocus, which was the Achilles heel of the Pen F compared to the EM5mkll when it was launched, and improved colour wheel function: you can now have 16 different custom modes, 1 for each well setting. This effectively allows you to bake whatever film simulation you want and store it, both in B&W amd colour. There are several sites that give you "recipes" to create Kodak, Fuji, Ilford and even Ferrania simulations.
      There are many other small changes in the menu that mirror those introduced with the EM1 mkll firmware. Video got some improvement in 1080p too.
      The Pen F is still my M43 main camera (with a GX9) today, as I did not feel compelled to upgrade further: I bought an X100v in 2020 but I got rid of that after 2 years, as I didn't see the point. It has noticeably better low light performances, but no IS which is a big limitation.

    I enjoyed watching this. I've accidentally managed to collect four Pen digitals. I bought the original E-P1 back in 2010 and while it's no longer my daily carry it's still one of my favorite cameras ever. Until pretty recently the prices on early M43 gear were ridiculously low, so over the years I also picked up an E-PL1, an E-P2, and an E-P3. The EPL1's point-and-shoot feel is fun in its own way. The E-P3 is definitely more refined and responsive. But I find happy familiarity keeps taking me back to the E-P1/E-P2. The resolution and speed are both still ok. Even with a manual focus lens it balances nicely and that big vertical thumb-wheel on the back works really well for me.

There is one thing they all share in common. I own (not acquired in that order) an E-PL1, E-PM2, E-M10, and an E-M5 MkIII. They all take the BLS-5/50 battery. Both the Pen series cameras take an external viewfinder, of which I have two. I certainly do not need, but would love to acquire, an E-P3 in silver!

    Thanks, that was great to have a walkthrough of the E-P line 🙂 I had the E-P1 years ago in 2012-13. I liked it but did not love it. I remember in 2013 I wanted the E-P5 but instead I got the GX7 instead, cheaper and with a built-in swivel EVF. I once owned an E-PL5, which I enjoyed, although it was not always easy to hold. The E-P line is better for ergonomics. When the E-P7 came out, I was tempted, but I found a great deal on the GX9, so I got that, more features including a swivelling EVF and cheaper 🙂

      I've had a very similar journey, I did love the E-P1 (and still do) but when it came time to upgrade the GX7 offered a more compelling package than E-P5. I've since also got a GX9. I've managed to pick up an E-P5 along the way also. Of the four, the GX7 is the one I love the most, followed by E-P1. Performance wise, the GX9 is clearly superior to all the others.

A few weeks ago I won an EPL 1 on an auction site for an insanely cheap price, even this one can take an external EVF, so I cannot understand why Olympus/OM systems didn’t continue this option with the EP7, EPL9 & EPL10

    Nice summary, apart from the E-P2, E-P3 and the E-P7 I own all of these too. Some of them in multiple colors (white, black E-P5, silver, black Pen F). The Pen F is in a class of its own compared to the other Pen cameras.
    It's noteworthy that the E-P7 is not worth owning, especially how expensive it still is - unless you REALLY want 20MP in a Pen and you cannot afford the Pen F. The E-P5 is a better camera in every aspect. It has a better shutter, that goes to 1/8000s, it can sync flash at 1/320s for the built in flash and 1/250s for external flash. It has 5.5 stops IBIS compensation, it has a faster frame rate, it has the accessory port - it's BETTER than the E-P7 in about EVERY way when you put the specs of both cameras next to each other. Nobody is going to notice the difference between 16MP and 20MP, megapixels don't matter. When the E-P5 came out, it even was better than the OMD E-M5, including the external viewfinder which was much better than the built in viewfinder in the E-M5. Of all the Pen cameras, the E-P5 is the best one to get today in terms of quality for asking price - I just bought the white E-P5 (it's ****ing GORGEOUS) for USD200 on Ebay. The Pen F is essentially selling used for what the new retail price was when corrected for inflation, it's already a collector piece.
    With the JIP acquisition, Olympus cameras went down the drain. They basically maintain exactly one camera, a flagship targeted at the niche market of wildlife and outdoor photography, everything else they produce is watered down reruns of older, better models - same with the OM5 which is a light version of the E-M1 III. It's just sad.

    • @RyougiVector
      @RyougiVector Рік тому +1

      The Pen-F is basically an OM-D in a Pen-sized body, so it makes sense that it stands on its own. I am somewhat anxious as to what Olympus will produce entirely under new management. @@RyougiVector I am very curious what OM System will do with the PEN line in the future. Tbh, it wouldn’t surprise me if they will focus mostly on the OMD line as a niche product aimed at outdoor/wildlife shooters and maybe only do an E-PL style continuation of the PEN’s rather than a more premium offering in that area. But who knows, they might announce a PEN-F mark ii next week and I’d (happily) be totally wrong :).

    • @RyougiVector
      @RyougiVector Рік тому +1

      @@bartjanverhoef if they figure out a way to make a Pen lineup with built-in EVFs, then as long as they can provide supply then I think they'd make a killing in the market. Just purchased the Pen e-p7, rather than the F. These reasons : 1.All dials buttons can be used holding camera with one hand. 2.There is one dial compared to two on the f at front next to finger grip so my fingers have more space. 3. The screen is flip rather the twist type which is faster to use and more useful with street photography. 4. The body is smaller than the f. 5. I don't use a viewfinder so that is not an issue. So it comes down to ergonomics and specific individual preferences, which specs you can do without or which are essential to how you use your camera. And you can find mint SH online slightly cheaper than the f becouse the f is now becoming a collectors item. Finally the build quality is very good, all dials click and feel excellent. I won't be bashing it around, and its small size makes it less exposed than my OM-D mkiii when walking.

    I remember when my cousin first introduced me to M43 with his Panasonic GF2. I thought it was amazing with lens being smaller and overall systems just being cheaper. I decided to buy a brand new camera in college but ended up with a FujiFilm XA2. I regretted it because though the images were kind of cool, dreamy. I couldn't get the colours I wanted and Fuji...lens was EXPENSIVE. Years later around 2020 I decided to pick-up an EPL2 from lady with a 14-42 and a 75-100. I was lucky because the 14-42 kit was faster than the original E-PL1 and E-P1 ones. And I was finally able to create the colours I wanted. But ultimately, I moved onto a EM10 mk II, because of the Electronic View Finder. There were some E-P5 sitting here and there but they were just too expensive where I am from. The EM10 Mk II I have is a little beat up with some scratches on the body but overall it is built pretty well. I think it uses the same hardware as the EP-5 so I think I am going to stick with the EM10 for a while. (Though lately I wanna dive into older Four Thirds -> The E300, maybe I'll make a video one day haha. But I am no good photographer.)

Also very curious about the Ricoh, I’ve never tried one so far, but there’s so much good stories about it!

    As someone who never have experience with Olympus, the ideal camera that I want amidst the premium PEN would be the E-P7. Newer processor for better auto-focus and write speed, very light, tilting LCD that is more convenient for waist shooting (my preferred style, nice for candid street photography), a teeny tiny bit better battery life, decent amount of physical controls, and of course it's drop dead gorgeous looks; sharper edges that are closer to the original analog Olympus PEN cameras (sorry E-P1 to 5 fans, the rounded shape is somewhat unappealing personally).
    Unfortunately the price is outrageous. I can find a used Fuji X-Pro with a larger sensor and weather seal at that price within my region.
    I think the E-P5 is the unanimous winner here for cost per value, but if we include the PEN Lite series I think I'd rather go with the E-P5's little brother, the E-PL6 announced in the same year. Significantly cheaper (nowadays) yet nearly the same performance, it's lighter and smaller but have a tad longer battery life, it's the last PEN Lite camera to support external EVF, once again a neat tilting LCD, and lastly it's utterly beautiful look in full black color with red copper accent.
    If ever get into the Micro Four Thirds ecosystem, I'll probably look for the E-P5 or the E-PL6/7/10; the full black ones kind of hide the softer edges and I like that.

    I have the E-P5 with the attached OVF, and, with a Pro Grade Lens it does a good job if you just want to go out and shoot some cityscape photos. I would recommend getting an Olympus Lens to go with them over a Panasonic because you do get sharper images. If I could have, I would have purchased the PEN-F, but, the E-P5 is a Classic. The E-P7 is hard to find and the price would also be up there. I have never come across one on KEH for sale and that is where I normally want my used gear to come from. My E-P5 was purchased new. I bought a E-M5 Mark III, which arrived yesterday, and the sharpness over my E-M1 is out of this world with a Panasonic Lens.

    I have owned EP1 EP5 and PenF. PenF is the best and closest to EM5 class without the bumped EVF. Beautiful but somehow still something missing. I will feel sad if OM won’t have another PenF. But maybe the time for Olympus is gone soon. Now it’s Fuji’s world. Now I don’t see many young photography enthusiasts talking about Oly, mostly Sony, GR and Fuji. It's a shame you don't mention the brilliant and very capable little Olympus E-PM2. I have one of these and it is almost my perfect pocket camera. It's the exact same size as my Ricoh GRD4 (and probably the GRIII also). I wish OM-SYSTEM/Olympus would keep making these tiny cameras. I keep erring over getting an E-P7 because unlike the E-PM2, the E-P7 has an electronic shutter making it extremely quiet and unobtrusive to use. But if you don't mind the sound of a mechanical shutter, the E-PM2 has it all. Paired with my DJILeica 15mm 1.7, the E-PM2 is a Ricoh GR killer and for a fraction of the price.

Also, I haven't found adjusting the manual controls to be that much of a problem as like with any camera, you get used to working with limited functionality after working with the camera for long enough. Reaching for exposure compensation or to change the aperture/shutter just comes now as second nature.

  • @jeffslade1892
    @jeffslade1892 Рік тому +1

    The PEN-F is just crying out for the tilt screen, the flip screen is for video and it is really not a video camera. Tilt screen is great for waist level, I do use the compensation dial, a lot. Then Olympus shot themselves in the foot (they have a habit of doing this) by deleting the AP2 port. The E-PL7 and its facelift E-PL8 were the last to have the AP2, which is not just for the EVF. After which they cheapened and dumbed down the Pen-Lite range and the E-P7 has followed suit.
    Certainly from the E-PL7 onwards (I don't know the E-P5) the image quality can be every bit as good as the latest mft models. The latest 20Mp have slightly better noise and DR but you would have to pixel-peep. The PEN-F 20Mp sensor is unique to it, backlit, and still as good as the latest offerings, E-M1iii, OM-1 and Lumix G9. The E-PL7 was sibling to the E-M10ii and both borrowed from the E-M5ii which was sibling to the PEN-F. The PEN-F is probably more complicated than an E-M1 but does have the cool feature of minimum shutter speed, and is probably the only Olympus that can reproduce the violet colour of a bluebell out of the box.

      @@bartjanverhoef I really wonder if OM Systems is dedicated to building this kind of quality. I think all of these cameras will all be collectors items soon. Surely, I won’t be parting with any of mine!

    I used the E-P7 for about 5 months, but I had to send it back due to a defective IBIS system. The headline feature of the E-P7 is that it is the lightest DSLM camera capable of 4k video with IBIS and full-sensor readout unlike anything from Panasonic (GX800/850/880). Had they put a mic jack, it would have financed their future for many years IMO. In the end, Olympus couldn't replace my E-P7 and they sent me a E-M5 iii instead. I still miss the E-P7 though... I never really use EVFs anyway and the flip-out screen takes too much time.

      Totally agree with your mic jack remark. I really don’t get why that wasn’t included in the E-P7. Als for the E-M5 mark iii screen, I actually like it. I use my E-M5 mark iii for these youtube video. Should I use the E-P7 and put it on a tripod, the flip down screen becomes unusable. Flipping it to the site (or top, there’s not gonna be a mic or evf on there anyway…😊) seems to have been more practical. Well, at least for how I’d use it.

      @@bartjanverhoef You can always attach the tripod to the E-P7's hotshoe instead. Filp the video in post.

    E-P5 is still best. It is not without drawbacks, like the power On/Off switch is in wrong place, but it is OK.
    The front is missing 1 or 2 of the Fn buttons, like E-M1 had. That would have made E-P5 amazing.
    And then the left side was lacking couple Fn buttons too.
    If Olympus would have made every single button, knob and switch to be possible configured for any wanted feature or shift, it would have been ultimate for all.
    Sadly no...
    Regardless of all that, E-P5 is best there is. And sadly Olympus failed in PEN-F with the side swiveling screen, size and horrible bad AF performance and very slow sensor readout speed.
    It is just amazing that how they managed to do that... Maybe the only m4/3 body I regret to buy, maybe because it is a silver and not black.

    The ep 6? No opinion?

      There is no E-P6; Olympus went from the E-P5 to the E-P7 (because of a connotation issue with how E-P6 is pronounced in some places, or so I read somewhere).
