I met John Prine 50 years ago at an after the bar party in Chicago. He and Bonnie Koloc were playing a dive bar and an old high school buddy of mine was one of the bartenders. After the bar closed about a dozen of us hung out with John and Bonnie and had a great time.
So glad Sturgill has recovered! What an old soul with a new perspective. I get the sense that Sturgill is grounded in tradition with a true artists drive to push boundaries to keep the work alive. I loved John Prine and see him as a visionary songwriter. Met John once and he was the most down to earth guy. Loved him so.
It seems almost inevitable now that a guy like Sturgill Simpson would meet a guy like John Prine .... 2 guys that just know what moves people, know how to tap into folks' souls, know what sounds great, know how to make us laugh and feel better about life, and know what the human race seems to need at any given time. Their music will last Forever !
“That’s pretty good. You wanna get some meatloaf?” The man made lifelong friends just like that. John just seemed like the easiest guy to grow close to. I hope he’s resting easy.
hey john the piano man your fade out tag sounds like you are channeling the late kenny kirklamd I could listen to you doing that for an hour you rock the monk too keep it up you and your band are quite fine!!!!!!
The Dead Dont Die...... pretty good movie, So the Dead Trully Dont Die, they live on in our hearts and it doesn't surprise me he gave sturgill the car.... John once received a Beautiful Jukebox for co writing a song for shits and giggles with Steve Goodman..... You dont even call me by my name... Prine was a true lyrical words smith and a man that loved the music way more then he ever lived for the hype..
Kiwi in Nepal here. Sturgill, you are what I like in America. RIP John Prine. I so liked that my countryman Marlon Williams covered The Speed of the Sound of Loneliness with the beautiful, the talented, Pieta Brown. Keep safe, all the best in these turbulent times. ua-cam.com/video/7ANJTU7Fll8/v-deo.html
@Ata Kurt Yeaah, there are more things I like about, or in, America. I'm guilty of superlatives in my compliment but hope it hasn't caused undue concern to the other 320 million Americans. And the redwoods. I like the redwoods. And the Grand Canyon. That goes without saying. Yeah, it's a pretty good place overall. Anyone living there is pretty damn happy all day long I bet.
I MET JOHN PRINE BACK IN CHICAGO. WE SPOKE ABOUT THE DIRECTION OF MUSIC, AND WHERE HE THOUGHT IT WAS HEADED. WE AGREED ON ONE THING, THAT IT'S NOT AS EASY AS IT WAS...
Watsonville CA is the strawberry capital of the world. So this hippie delighted in listening to "Strawberry Fields forever" Beatles played by a blue grass band. Destroyed all stigma about the banjo and banjar.
Hey Steve, thanks for giving Sturgill some attention, but you shouldn't have introduced him as a "country" singer. He talks a lot in interviews about how he hates to be pigeon-holed in that category.
2:29 2021 me is super freaked out by this. Licking fingers, audience laughter, and touching food with our hands? Did people actually used to live this way?
From what I’ve read, Sturgill had to fight just to get treated for his covid. The doctors didn’t think it was possible he could have it and pretty much dismissed him. He’s been somewhat critical of the US response to covid. John Prine also died from covid, and I’m sure that didn’t escape either of them.
Sturgill would hate to hear someone say this, and would probably slap me in the face because he would feel it is an insult to John Prine...but I have to say it anyway. He (among a few others) are continuing to carry out the mission John Prine set out to accomplish: write meaningful songs. I feel like we owe as much gratitude to them (and obviously Prine too), as they owe to John. Not only did John help these treasured songwriters find their stride, their voice, and their vision; but their unbridled respect for him has undoubtedly made a few new fans for him as well, posthumous or otherwise. John Prine might have left us, but if you tell me Im wrong about people like Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Margo Price, Brandi Carlile, etc. keeping John alive through the music every single day...I'd wager Sturgill might slap you instead of me for making this comment.
It was quite easy to catch covid-19 in Europe in early March. And it sounds like it sure was covid-19 that he had, in spite of the poorly informed doctor.
"Always treat others as you would like them to treat you" and "Love your neighbour as yourself." This is the Law and the Prophets of the Lord our God... “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbour as yourself. I am the Lord.” - (at Leviticus 19: 18) - “Cease to do evil and learn to do right, pursue justice and champion the oppressed; give the orphan his rights, plead the widow’s cause.” - (The prophet Isaiah 1: 17) - “Administer true justice, show loyalty and compassion to one another, do not oppress the orphan and the widow, the alien and the poor; do not contrive any evil against one another.” - (The prophet Zechariah 7: 9-10) - Continued below...

You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (at Matthew 7: 15-16) - “Any plant that is not of my heavenly Father’s planting will be rooted up. Leave them alone; they are blind guides, and if one blind man guides another they will both fall into the ditch.” - (Matthew 15: 13-14) - “Do not call any man on earth ‘father’; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” - (Matthew 7: 12-14) - “I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe. He shall go in and out and shall find pasturage. The thief comes only to steal, to kill, to destroy; I have come that men may have life, and may have it in all its fullness.” - (John 10: 9-10) - “I am the resurrection and I am life. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and no one who is alive and has faith shall ever die.” - (John 11: 25-26) - “I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) - “Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) - “I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” (John 14: 6-7) - “The disciples came and asked Jesus, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. I'm grateful that Stephen asks his guests about John Prine every chance that he gets. That was a tough one for me personally.
Me too. What a loss. Loved John Prine so.
We lost one of the best.
I met John Prine 50 years ago at an after the bar party in Chicago. He and Bonnie Koloc were playing a dive bar and an old high school buddy of mine was one of the bartenders. After the bar closed about a dozen of us hung out with John and Bonnie and had a great time.

I'm 10 years old again, back in the pickup truck at night with my Dad taking me home :")
I believe that picture on the motorcycle was taken outside of Big Al's Deli in Nashville.
Can confirm. Street view shows the two telephone poles and the brown house in the background.

Nothing like feeling like a bucket full of buttholes! Sturgill seems badass to kick it with.
Speaking of heroes...

Hey Steve, thanks for giving Sturgill some attention, but you shouldn't have introduced him as a "country" singer. He talks a lot in interviews about how he hates to be pigeon-holed in that category.

Now I want waffles.
If you're gonna go to the Awful Waffle, wait until about 2 or 3am. Like Sturgill said you'll meet some pretty interesting people.
King sturg
What a rich life!
💕
I love how Stephen totally avoided to let this poor man know that Rona was in Europe from January.
Sturgill's point was that his doctor was clearly wrong.
From what I’ve read, Sturgill had to fight just to get treated for his covid. The doctors didn’t think it was possible he could have it and pretty much dismissed him.
