Alright folks, I’m dropping the mic on how to hire A players. 🎤
“How do you hire great people?"
This is by far the most common question I get from other entrepreneurs.
You can’t grow a great company without great people.
But how do you find the good ones?
That’s what I’ll be covering in this video!
Our hiring process is one of the things we do best at Self Publishing School…that’s why we have such great people that work here!
Unfortunately this isn’t something I can explain in 3 minutes... 🙃
This is probably the longest “Principles” video I’ve recorded, but it’ll cover everything you know to setup a great hiring process (remember, I’m attempting to drop the mic here).
In the video I cover 3 things:
1. How to source great candidates
2. How to structure the application / interview process
3. How to select the best candidate and get them to work for you
I also talk about the fatal flaw most people make before even starting the hiring process.
Buckle up, grab some popcorn, and watch this thing to the end if you want your mind blown in a way that will completely change your hiring process.
-Chandler
P.S. know a fellow entrepreneur who’s hiring…or that might find this process helpful? Share this video with them!
P.P.S. "Who" by Geoff Smart and "Topgrading" by Brad Smart are two great books on this topic that I reference in the video.

super helping tips!
I am amazed at the value you give us in your content. Thank you. It’s a little scary though, how everything I’ve clicked on in the last 20 hours since happening onto your school, addresses every single thing I need to get addressed. Your marketing chops are a thing of beauty, Chandler. Thank you for sharing your amazing skills. I was in the consulting business a long time. Hiring, onboarding and training was always one of our top priorities - even in an up-or-out environment (that’s how long ago that was!). I learned early to use the standard process without fail, and then to trust my instinct about the fit. If my instinct was pro or con - didn’t matter. What mattered was thinking critically about WHY I had that instinct - trying to figure out what was driving it. Was it the candidate or was it my bias? My instinct was always right in the end. Where I could get into trouble was dismissing my instinct because everything looked good on paper, and I didn’t have time to “think on it.” Those hires always failed in the long run. So interesting.
Hi Chandler Great information! I’ve been self-employed and an entrepreneur pretty much my whole entire life and as I listen to you I realize I need to evaluate and apply these to myself so I would even know who to hire if that makes sense! I’ve always try to juggle all the different hats myself.... I actually took the personality profile test a few months back when I was considering applying for one of your openings ..that helped me so much by showing me my weaknesses and my strengths and why I struggle in different areas. Thank you so much for everything that I have learned and continue to learn and be encouraged through your ministry 😊
I don't think hiring family members or close friends is a great idea. But if you do, I would lay down the rules and personal expectations from the very start,..at day one.. so you don't have a difficult task to correct later and lose the relationship. Like making it clear, On the job, I am your boss, our personal relationship starts after 5pm..but while on the job its strictly professional and corrections etc should not be taken personally, don't expect exceptionally favors, and not take advantage of close relationship treating other staff less or coming to work late or taking too much time off etc.
Great content & hiring tips! I don't see the documents referenced.
Every video you do is not only a game changer, but a lifechanger!
Thank you Chandler for guiding me on what I should do when hiring so I have my mission and purpose clear to find the right person for the job

Good day Chandler, thanking God that I just discovered you. The tremendous value you provide in these videos are unbelievable. You laid it out. That job scoreboard - yesssssssss! Tried to access the template you referred to, but it's no longer working. Is there a link where I can gain access to the template?
Very insightful information and teaching! Great principles that can be applied not just to hiring but other areas of business as well: have a system, stick to it, be consistent and punctual, maintain a good work ethic, and investing in time and effort up front in preventative practice to avoid mis-hires. To paraphrase, a pound of prevention is truly worth a ton of cure. This video exemplifies this maxim so well. Great presentation, Chandler, and thanks so much for your generosity sharing these golden nuggets of wisdom. God bless you.
The video is really a big addition! Love it.
Helpful criteria for both employers and employees. Thanks Chandler!
Always gain a lot from your videos! Thank you!

This is fantastic! I've been wondering for a while how you managed to create such a solid team of like-minded people who genuinely get along really well. This makes it super obvious!
Thanks Bella! You're definitely one of those people and I appreciate having you on the team
You have the best tips! Thank you!
As a solopreneur, I’m not often hiring for my own company, but I coach both A List candidates and those who hire them. I’ll be sharing this with both audiences. Thanks for the great video.
I loved the video! Very informative.
Great advice! I used to work as a business manager so this video brought back memories lol
Chandler you have changed my life with this video. I was beginning to doubt whether I could continue on with this business. You’ve given me hope! Thank you for such a great, well presented video.
Great to hear! Are you hiring currently? Biggest takeaway?
@@ChandlerBoltOfficial I absolutely love your teaching style. It's so well-paced, kind tone, and easy to understand. I'm interested to know how old you are. You've got so much wisdom. Either way, you definitely deserve my sub. From this video, I learned that hiring doesn't have to be a guessing game. It can be process-driven. Those 4 steps are gold bro! I also am so glad that I now know that hiring for sales is probably one of the most important first hires a company can make. I've been going around in circles trying to figure out what skills I need to hire first, especially with very little capital. I like how you said that good sales-people need to feel like your role is a step up from their previous job. I did try Indeed previously but got a ton of spammers. What other sites are your go-to options?
@@GeekArts great to hear! Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/oSkHgragNWE/v-deo.html

Amazing Chandler! Thanks so much
Glad it was helpful!
This is so helpful!
Thank you for all of this amazing wisdom! #GOLD #LEGEND
Thanks guys! Glad you found it helpful. Good luck in your hiring
Many great points made. I am a firm believer that organizations should take more time to select whom they hire for their team (I work in sales) because it saves time and money in the long run. As someone that has a great deal to offer an employer, I look forward to seeing a video from the potential employee's perspective i.e. how to weed out toxic employers when interviewing. : )
Great video Chandler!
Thanks!
Great info Chandler!
Sounds like a good steps here, well covered to achieve success.
I like how clear it is for the prospective employee.
For entrepreneurs not ready to hire staff I guess we can apply similar principles to hiring the best outsourcers/ other sole traders . I love your videos.
Very Helpful!
Even is 4 years old video, I think back to basic is what I really need. Great sharing, thanks Chandler!
Timeless principles! We still use them today
@@ChandlerBoltOfficial hey Chandler the link no longer seems to work, any other place I can download the resources?
I agree here. I tried to download as well and the links are spam now. Would love to download information. I’m literally binge watching your channel trying to help rebuild my team
Always jam packed full of nuggets!!!
I had no ideas how to hire or even if I needed to now I know!
Grrrreat hiring tips!
Great information!
Definitely an intense process that i enjoyed listening to. However, when you don't own the company and can't just afford anyone, you have to compromise somewhere. That said, the scorecard process was my favorite. Though I don't necessarily have a set process, I like to focus on what skillset I am looking for and the execution methodology the candidate can freely express. Like you I am not into checkboxes. I like to keep it fair and give everyone a fair chance from a cautionary perspective. I just want to end and say I love your videos.
Awesome info!
Great video!
Helpful advice for hiring and being a person worthy of hire.
I'm hiring an executive assistant. This is going to be a HIGH LEVEL team member who has to be an A+ player - and is going to wildly important to my organization. Thanks for this video. Very important information on what I need to be looking at during the various stages of hiring!!!
Glad it was helpful, Scott! Can't wait for you to get a great assistant
Not hiring team YET... but this definitely gives me some things to think about as I get to that phase...

Interesting advice - I will try applying the steps Chandler uses into my department's hiring process.

Not hiring, yet.. Haha. Good insight man, thanks. 💙
Great video !! Thank you for that !!! I’d love to download the hiring process but the link doesn’t work….any way I can get that?!
I'm interviewing with SPS soon and scheduled my appointment early in the day to set the bar for the other candidates. I hope I didn't shoot myself in the foot with the Recency Bias... 😉
Thank you!
Interesting very helpful when a bit side track with thoughts on what to write
Having a detailed after-hire plan (job score card), is a fantastic idea!
check out my video on how to create job scorecard?
This will be great when I finally start my business and need to hire someone. Thanks.
thanks Ramsey!
Good advice!
Nice templates, thanks
This was so helpful!! Thank you for this awesome content. I tried to download the PDF and unfortunately the link is dead. Is there another place I can find the templates you talk about in this video?
Very good information.

Chandler Bolt there's a problem with the link to the A Players information. It won't go through. Can you please fix it for all of us! We love the training you do here.
This was great do you have an updated pdf? I wasn’t able to get it to open . It took me elsewhere thank you
Very good....impressed and nervous
A great resource to hire A player. Thank you.
Please make the download link to work.
As I am a writer and don’t have a staff this video would be useful only when I start outsourcing my formatting of books.
Good information 👍
Good Video, thanks
