Do wires sound better than PC boards?

  • Audio equipment used to be hand wired in a process known as point to point wiring, but now most everything is without wires using thin strips of copper clad to fiberglass instead. What's better, point-to-point or PC boards when it comes to sound quality? Have a question you want to ask me? Go to www.psaudio.com/ask-paul/

Paul please put those interviews out so we may listen to that slice of music history and they are preserved forever. Thanks for all your great info.

Aim is to keep Resistance(R) and Inductance(L) to a minimum, this means keeping length(l) of wires as short as possible and diameter/width as large as possible. So wires are prefered unless you can keep paths as short as possible;in which case a PCB is prefered-such as linking two surface mount components together.

I enjoy your talks and appreciate the common sense you bring to subject matter that can be a bit murky.

I modded a rat pedal by replacing the clipping diodes with a white led in parallel with a 5158, and and a red led in parallel with a 5158. I tested it by clipping the original diodes and soldered the new components on to the remaining leads. It sounded awesome so I proceeded to desolder the original leads and replaced them with the new leads. When I plugged it in it sounded totally different, I tried everything but eventually extended the leads and did it up the way I did before and the awesome sound returned regardless of how idiotic it looks the sound is what matters to me. I never use to believe the hype but in some cases it does matter.

As I know there are several uses of wires on PCB.

It is quite understandable that most companies would not want visitors in their R&D labs, at least not without signing an NDA. I might like to visit PS Audio someday (I live in Farmington, NM but have relatives in Colorado Springs and Denver) not to see development labs but to see and hear products in demo rooms.

Paul, in analog electronics, a well-designed circuit board can outperform a point-to-point wired circuit because you can optimize and shorten the lengths of conductors. Remember that every wire or circuit trace is an antenna. For example, when McIntosh redesigned its Mc275 with a single circuit board, they were able to achieve a much improved signal-to-noise ratio for this reason. The new model performs far better.

Paul, we would love to hear the tapes. I think you would know how to digitize them. :)

As a guitar amp enthusiast and collector, Point/Point or Eyelet/Turret board is preferred for Tube amps. The reason isn't really isn't sound related as much as it is durability. Tube socket pins on PC boards crack too often. The ONLY guitar amp company I can think of that did PC boards correctly in mass was Peavey, and they thickly tinned many of that boards traces to help it stand up to the road. In a guitar amp, a thick solder joint on a wire wound on a turret just outlasts a component in a PC board. For a home stereo, I don't think it's as big of a deal.... as long as the Rise/Fall of temperature is compensated for in the design to avoid failure at the solder joints.

Hi Paul, thanks for such another informative video. Have you thought about putting your old radio interviews online via podcast or UA-cam? Depending on copyright issues I am sure many people would enjoy listening to them.
