  • I began my rebuild when I did a compression test and noticed I had poor compression in cylinders 2-6 (about 142 psi, the bottom of the service limit). Cylinder 1 had 160 psi. A leakdown test showed leakage into each adjacent cylinder. Of course my engine also had the oil consumption problem (1 quart every 1000 miles) that every M54 engine has, which is caused by the oil rings which wear down prematurely (the M52TU used different oil rings which did not have this problem). There was also coolant loss, which I didn't measure precisely.

    i'm from Brazil. I would like to thank you wholeheartedly for everything you do for us, the owner of BMW. I have an E46 325. I learn a lot from your videos. Even without knowing English. just for your visual explanations. I did everything on it. Now I'm making the engine completely at home. I had never done anything like that. But thank God and your videos, I'm doing it. thank you very much, you have no idea how important your videos are to me. I am using a translator to send you this text.

    Hey Jason, this is a great video and the one thing I enjoy is that you cover the things that went right and the things that went wrong. Anytime we wrench it is an iterative process and we hopefully learn from our mistakes or wrong assumptions. You handle it as a teacher and help us all learn. Thanks for the effort!

    50sKid, great video, but having built various engines for 40 years a couple of things I would have done differently. First when cleaning the cylinder bores of a freshly bored or honed block ALWAYs use engine oil, not solvent. The oil will float any debris off the bores. I obtained a brand new Toyota OEM 22RE short block from the dealer for my pickup and disassembled it to check all the clearances...you wouldn't believe the dirt that came out of the bores using an oil soaked lint free rag! Also when installing oil seals in their carriers or a timing cover I use a light skim coat of gasket sealer on the outside of the seal...Toyota black FIPG is the best...NOT RTV! The seal goes in the housing easier and it won't leak around the perimeter. Finally I wouldn't touch those Chinese eBay master kits with a ten-foot pole...too many unknowns in metallurgy and as you saw the rear main seal was crap. Just my 2 cents as a fellow shade tree wrench!

    Good video , small tip for assembling piston clips is to put it in like you did but have the endsticking out next to the dent , then use a small flathead or one end of a c-clip plier to lever the clip in to the grove.

    Hey, so, I received two sets of those same Glyco bearings (6:45) and had the same issue with both packs! Be sure that if you order the Glyco bearings, whomever is shipping them CHECKS THE PARTS! The company I ordered them from replaced my order with OEM main bearings for my rebuild. Hope this was helpful.

      The bottom end is very similar--I mean, an engine is an engine at the end of the day. But it's made from cast iron instead of aluminum. The cylinder heads are very different though. The S54 does not have hydraulic lifters.

    Hey 50skid. Working on a rebuild m54b30. I been looking at the piston rings sets but I notice you have the 3rd oil rings separate. Where did you bought just the 3rd rings?. Or if you bought the whole set of the m52tu which model and year did you use to buy the piston ring set. I'm planning on using the piston ring set of the m52tu and reuse the 1st ring from the old pistons. I measure them and they are within specs.

I heart about the m3 needing rod bearings at 100k as a maintenance e requirement, I see everybody just popping in a set of bearings and thats it, ggod to go. Is it advisable to replace e the bearings on m54 engine without grinding the rank ot rod caps assuming that the 2 surface aren't chewed and do u just pop in a set of off the shelf factory bearings? Thanks for the help and prompt answer! Happy new year

    I can appreciate your logic for reusing main cap bolts but why were you reluctant to extend that same logic to reusing connecting rod bolts? You indicate in your video that the max torque was 45-Nm which I would think is below the torque that would result in stretching the bolt?

    • @86andyw
      @86andyw 4 роки тому

      David V fuck no. You’ll spin a bearing doing that. Never oil the back of any main, cam , or con rod bearing. I prefer engine assembly lube to oil. It will stay in place longer. Oil tends to run off eventually. Also it won’t effect the oil. You can confirm this with an oil analysis

Before I do, please advise me if I can be able to incorporate the M52TU oil and piston rings to my ordinary M54 engine in place of those M54 ones. Also, for the gaskets, should I also look at the M52TU ones as well? - as from what I have gathered, they last a lot longer. What other replacement parts would you recommend that are more durable for my rebuilt engine to last longer than the OEM.

    Cant spin crankshft bearing caps on correct side...any ideas what problem might be?I am replacing crankcase and using original internal engine parts (crankshaft and main bearings). The original crankcase had green paint dot and replacement crankcase has yellow dot. I was able to spin crankshaft with ease with engine belts and pulleys but after relocating crankshaft I can no longer rotate crankshaft. I have not polished crankshaft or changed bearings. Do I need to do this? FWIW... I placed crankshaft and main bearing back into original crankcase and was able to easily rotate crankshaft. The only obvious differences is that the original engine block has green paint on it whereas the newer block has yellow paint on it. I have ordered yellow bearings...Hoping this works....ThanksPS....I made sure to install all the bearings in the correct orientation and placed bearing caps in the correct locations.

    • @tonycopelyn8730
      @tonycopelyn8730 6 років тому

      The answer...when the engines are manufactured...tbey are aligned bored witb the bearing caps installed..the ock and caps are unique to each engine so as in my case tbjs block did not come witb any caps. I am using the caps from my original block and that is why their is binding. So I have to have the new block with its new caps aligned honed as one unit and they mah need to vrind the caps down to bring everything in spec....fortunately I have my orifginal block and they can copy the specs

    • @tonycopelyn8730
      @tonycopelyn8730 3 роки тому

      The problem was that each engine block and main caps come designed as one unit...The main caps are not interchangeable....I had to get the donor block and main caps had to lateral bored or whatever in order to get crankshaft and main caps to fit together.....$750...I had no idea...so if you use a different block...make sure it comes with the main caps...

    You put made in china products in your rebuild? You know that they only pay lip service to see international standards right? You cant beat quality machining. Then you double check work done by American tradesmen on your block? Amazing, but its your car.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  6 років тому +2

      You gotta understand that:
      a) there are no american made aftermarket pistons available for an oem M54 block (only for the S54 which is the M3).
      b) I was making a series here that is supposed to show other people what they should do with their builds and it's always a good idea to double check the work that is done by your particular machine shop because there are bad ones out there. I've seen blocks that were not decked flat, etc.
      c) six OEM pistons at $350/each plus all the rest of the money I spent on this job would have cost more than the car is worth so Chinese ones were the only option available to me.
      d) everything turned out great and the engine is going strong.
