As a former controller, I can only imagine watching you progress to a landing was like watching paint dry ... slooow.! But, I must agree with the better comments here. You called ahead, knew you were tasked with staying as sharp as you could and you had two fully qualified pilots watching and cross-checking one another. Nicely Done. I would guess that your flying into that airport made your skills a bit sharper. Good for you. Again, as a former controller, the fun of the job was getting everyone there safely. Working that other traffic around you would be what I called the 'fun.' You were just another plane. Only a bit slower. They weren't hurt by having to work with a much slower aircraft they they had been used to. Everyone wins here.

I used to spot for a Cessna owner flying in and around of Ohare. Listening to ATC tell a triple 7 heavy to slow down to make room for a Cessna in front of him usually is what brings the house down.

Ernest Lingo easiest way to spot an airport ar night is to look among the lights, and find “dead space” a dark area. Chances are that’s an airport and not a lake or something

MCO is Orlando International (McCoy Air Base originally). ORL is Orlando Executive. ORD is Chicago O'Hare (originally Orchard Field), named after Medal of Honor winner Butch O'Hare...who happened to be the son of Al Capone's lawyer who blew the whistle on the gangster for tax evasion.

Thanks! I had to check what did you mean by doesn't exist anymore and learned that the airfield was demolished in 2002 and now is empty land in the lake.
In Google Earth there is a reference in there: "it was the default airport in Microsoft Flight Simulator software."

Me and two buddies did this at ORD in college. Our landing was at 3am and we did a full stop taxi back. I’ll never forget taxiing next to the 747s running cargo that night.

One of my last flights as a crew member in Coast Guard HH52 helicopter was a routine evening lake patrol flight out of CGAS Chicago (located in Glenview, It was decommissioned and torn down in the late 90’s along with Glenview NAS). It was on July 4th,1972 and I got to sit by the open side door (yes, I was tethered in) and watch fireworks from lots of different suburbs as we flew back to the station.

I was flying into Richmond, VA one day in a 172 and the tower tells me to get in line between 2 heavies that are 2 miles apart. I IMMEDIATELY requested #3 behind the second heavy, because there was NO WAY I was gonna make the airport before him. I know that pilot and everyone on that plane was glad I did.
Be mindful of wake turbulence, even if you cant see it... its there.
great. you want the 'experience' of a class bravo.. the experience of messing sequences up and getting lost on ground. quite the challlenge.. glad they went at night. flying max cruise until the approach end and still land on before brick 1 haha

I'm considering doing this in a Piper sometime next week, but after watching this clip I'm having second thoughts. There's so much prep to do, I had no idea! Add to that the responsibility to your passengers, ATC, and other traffic, and you have a recipe for annoying self-doubt. This is X-Plane also.

It is something you have to "Grow an ear to" and it takes practice but they usually say things in same order and same thing always in same situation. You have to just learn the pattern.

If they’d not called ahead and just filed an IFR flight plan with KORD they’d have gotten in. ATC doesn’t have any right to turn them down. They may jockey them around to fit them in but they’d not be denied service.
Good Job! Very Professional. I am a retired controller. Started my career at Chicago Executive (Pal-Waukee) in 1974 and then went to O'Hare tower in 1977. I worked in the tower until 2004 when I took a job in the offices as a Planning and Procedure Specialist ( I got too old to work air traffic) and retired in 2014. Thanks for making this video it brings back good memories. It takes courage to fly a single engine into O'Hare in the midst of all the jets. Again you are to be commended for your professionalism and Preparation. God Bless You. Thanks again.

COOL! I once landed a Cessna 172... VFR at SFO...(my friend had a flight out of there)
So I called ATC from over Monterey, told them destination SFO...Expected a curse "NO CESSNA". Was
shocked when they approved and told me to report over Moffit Field...a long straight in final approach....switching to the Tower,
1 mile final I started to put in 1 notch of flaps...Tower said "Keep your speed up Cessna"
So went in, NO FLAPS, power dive at over 120 knots. landed smoothly...as per tower instruction made turn off....then taxied about
3 miles to General Aviation...Experience I will never forget.... taking off 2 hours later was a challenge.
This reminds me of my own training. We flew into O'Hare IFR, sharing airspace with monsters. I remember being asked for an "expedited" approach because there was a jumbo jet behind us. I flew the approach at cruise speed and took a high-speed taxi off the main runway, a speed that my Piper retractable could damn near have flown.
Taking off was also interesting. We were surrounded by air-breathing, fire-screaming creatures it was best to avoid. I remember looking in my rearview mirror and seeing titanic landing gear waiting to run us over. It was a relief to get a midfield runway takeoff assignment and a quick getaway.

@@gstone3148 Several C-152s and 172s I've flown have had a (practically useless) rear-view mirror. The Citabria I did tailwheel training in had one, too. Try again!

There's almost nothing more beautiful than a big city at night.
I got to fly into O'Hare once but it was during the day. My Instrument Instructor thought it would be a good idea. We did it in the clouds, approaching over the lake from the east and breaking out of the clouds at maybe 1000 feet AGL. Suddenly there was a huge runway in front of me, hundreds of feet wide and 2 miles long. The tower said there was a 747 behind us and we should "expedite approach". I asked my instructor what that means and he said to fly the approach at cruise speed.
Gulp! I'd never done such a thing but shoved the airplane into a 130 knot descent, jamming it on the runway and taking the first exit at (normal) flying speed.
We had lunch and departed VFR sandwiched between airplanes so huge that the one behind us was just nose gear in the mirror.
What was your aircraft? I have seen situations like that at ORD and ATL. Mooney, fast Piper, fast Beechcraft between two B747s. Since the B747 is supposed to have a visual on the GA aircraft it is stopped far behind due to the sight angles from the B747 cockpit.
That's a high pressure landing for sure haha. Probably good experience though. Do that a few times and nothing would phase you

That front camera view was awesome. One reason you avoid Class B airports is the Facility Fee. Just to land at Miami International and park on Landmark Aviation's ramp would cost me $220

@@Aviation101 I live in McKinney about 5 min drive to McKinney airport. Live 5 min from the small one that had the mid air collision last summer, not sure the name of it though. See lots of personal aircraft fly out of that one and over the house. The 1 plane crashed about 2 blocks from the house the other was down the street at the Home Depot

In late 1991, I was touring the Western USA in my 1954 Cessna 170BM. I got a wild hair one day, and decided I would attempt to land at SFO. I was East of the field about 10 miles, and when ATC asked for my type, I could almost hear the "are you kidding me??" after I replied.
The tower did ask me to keep my speed up, and as I lined up on long final for 27L, there was a B737 just off my right wing, and I was able to wave at the curious passengers looking over at my small bird. I told the tower I would only be using the last 300-400 feet of the runway, and to bring any other traffic in close behind me if need be. I hangared at the FBO on the South side , and if I recall correctly, the landing fee was about $75.
It seems that San Francisco is not really worth visiting any more, so I'm glad I got a chance to see it almost 30 years ago.

Was just in North beach the other week. Still the hippest place, packed with tourists from all over the world. Europeans say its their favorite place to visit, american hillbillies don’t seem to like it though, but they know best. Please stay away. You can’t afford SF anyway so its prolly best. You sound like a douche telling the controllers to place traffic behind you. Its their job to decide that. Are we making things better again yet?

Beautiful ATC work - I'm sure Center and tower were all very appreciative. Aircraft handling was precise for both the GS and Loc. ATC kept the heavies and fast flyers separated off your tail. This was truly a joy to watch and listen to. Definitely not something I would want to attempt without my trusted CFI in the right seat. (lovely photography too.)

During instrument training many years ago, my instructor told me we would be flying into LAX late one evening to pick up a pilot who worked for the company (which provided FedEx contract service--this was back in the seventies before FedEx owned their own feeders). We landed on 24R (with full CATIIIa lighting), taxied to the south complex, picked up our passenger and took off on 25R. While holding for departure on what I assumed would be 25L, a 727 departed ahead of us. I spent several nervous seconds wondering how I would phrase my request to hold for wake turbulence, but the controller cleared us to takeoff on 25R, which was free and clear. We followed instructions to remain at or below 1000, and follow the shoreline north for the trip back to BUR. Although a little nerve-wracking for a 200 hour pilot, it was an incredibly interesting and educational experience, and I will never forget the local controller's willingness to consider my safety without me having to pry it out of him, even at a busy airport like LAX.

Just watched your video and I really enjoyed it because I've done the exact same thing, also in a 172 and about 9:30 pm, albeit many years ago when it was called a TCA. Working on my Instrument rating at MDW one evening my CFI asked me if I'd like to go to ORD. He said "you fly, I'll handle the radios" and it worked perfectly. Everything you said about flying in ORD airspace with much larger and faster aircraft is absolutely true. Calling ahead, being professional, ditto. To taxi among airliners, with their nose wheel headlight at about the same height as the rear window; it was light the sun. Every controller we talked to treated us just like everybody else, very professional and courteous. Thanks for posting, I'm glad I found it; I'll watch it again and again. My experience was WAY before personal video!

***** as a follow up regarding having a camera go down at a cool time on a flight: Same thing happened to me arriving at Osh - 2/3 of my GoPros (including the one getting audio) died IN THE PATTERN arriving into Osh this year. like all I needed as ~5 more minutes. One was a dead battery, the other a full card. Anyway - even though I was flying right seat, I was in "100% pilot mode" at that that point, as you were when landing in Chicago; so it's good to know we do what we say we do, and ignore the cameras when flying critical phases.
***** And that's exactly how it should be! Set it and forget it. I was so in the zone that I didn't ever glance at the camera once (or else I would have noticed the "REC" was off). Aviate, Navigate, Communicate - nothing about fiddling with cameras in there!

Absolutely amazing. I have flown in and out of O'Hare over 100 times and each time was different. Spring time at night is beautiful. Getting to travel for business and having a family who is adventurous is a blessing. This past summer, 2 of my college age kids and I spent the month of June in Berlin and Dubai. On the way home, I promised my kids to see the Dodgers at the cathedral of baseball, Wrigley field. My son asked me why we were flying into O'Hare at night since our hotel was minutes away from Midway. I just said " wait and see our approach to O'Hare"... Thanks for sharing !!!!

In a boat or ship it is always best to use starboard and port. Two people facing each other will look in opposite directions when you tell them to look left.
They will look in the same direction when you tell them to look to the port side.

Another CFI and I flew in from DuPage to O'Hare in a new F35 Bonanza back in 1979. We worked at DuPage Aviation, the largest Beechcraft dealer in the Mid-West back in the 1970's. We would sometimes pick up new planes from the Beech factory in Wichita. Anyway, to O'Hare, the Approach controller asked if we could keep our cruise speed up to around 160 as long as we could until short final. He wanted to sequence a jet in behind us. As young men, we got a real kick and we had little fear. Now, I'm a different person. Anyway, January 1979 was one of the coldest winters Chicago had in many years. Also, the snow drifts from plowing on the sides of the runway must have been at least 10 ft high. I recall as we were cleared for take off to the Northwest, the tower asked us to make a right 270 degree turn as soon as possible. We complied. I recall a long line of "heavy" jets waiting in line for us to depart. As soon as it was safe, we raised the gear and made a steep climbing right turn to the West. It felt like we broke ground in a few hunderd feet because it was so cold outside. Someone watching from the taxiway said "give that guy a Kewpie doll". My buddy in the right seat said "we'll take it", and we were on our way. I'll never forget that experience. That was 38 years ago.
i recall taking off out of Riverside enroute to Hollywood/Burbank to shoot ILS landings on a clear VFR day. While under the hood and with an observer aboard, we were cleared for takeoff by Riverside tower with the instructions to switch to Ontario Radar at about 2000'. I was getting ready to request direct transition to Victor 26 thence direct El Monte when departure control, in a very hurried voice, instructed "Arrow one niner one two tango turn left 180 immediately". I immediately complied without acknowledgement when my observer said "HOLY -HIT". I immediately whipped the hood back and there in my cross path at maybe 500 higher than me was a C-5 Galaxy heading approximately 270 to the Norton transition. I immediately chopped power and put the nose down waiting for the wake turbulence to hit us..........it never came. We got lucky. I continued heading 180 directly towards the Cleveland National Forest mountain range waiting for departure control to vector us back to Victor 26.....and waited....and waited...and waited...finally I said "Ontario departure control Arrow 12 Tango"...he responded "12 Tango go"...I responded "do you intend to vector us back to Victor 26 or do you want us to continue into the mountain". Needless to say I cancelled IFR, flew directly to Ontario VFR and filed a near miss report.
I too Have been into Ohare in a 172, a C210, and our Family Aztec. Its always been fun, especially with the older Taxiway names,,,,,Inner/Outer/Lake Shore drive, ect......Plus Butler Aviation used to be where the United terminal was built. $5 to park all day! They used have a stub Runway 18/36 next to the VOR. You always landed 18....and departed 36....no matter what the wind was!

This seams so calm and peaceful, at first it seemed stressful but as it went on I realized it is a very peaceful place that high.

This is a great way to demonstrate just how complex and difficult landing a smaller GA plane in a busy Bravo airspace is, and why avoiding one if possible is a better option, but planning ahead is essential if that’s your plan, because the accident at Dallas Hobby Airport with the task saturated and overloaded single pilot simply falling from the sky in the end is one that haunts me. Enjoyed the ride with you guys.
Wow, that's one kind of an experience! I once flew into San Diego VFR and was impressed by the calmness of the controller - as long as you comply with their instructions. The had us flying parallel to IFR traffic, then quickly asked whether I was ready for a short approach, and in I went, with a 757 coming after me!
As you said: be prepared and be precise, and they will not yell at you!
On the way out I had to climb to 12,000 feet due to clouds. The northerly winds pushed me close to the Mexican border, but when I refused to turn north due to clouds, all they said was: ok, maintain VFR!
Wow how times have changed! Did this back in the 70s at age 19 in a C-150. I was lucky enough to have trained at BWI in Baltimore so the radio did not intimidate me.
Very cool video, I'm glad to of randomly run across it. Thanks for posting. This brought back some great memories. I learned to fly in and around ORD airspace out of what was then PWK (Palwaukee Airport) right next to ORD. It's a complex, crowded, windy and exciting airspace to be sure.
Neat video.....love the city lights. THat's one of my favorite things about landing in large airports when I travel:-).
As a controller, I don't understand why private pilots would think it's a big deal to fly into an airport like ORD. The controllers there almost all came from smaller terminal facilities as well as probably work smaller aircraft into satellite airports, so working a skyhawk is just not a big deal to them. There's also no need to go fast (like the one guy said, 100 versus 90 knots doesn't make a difference -- we just add extra space behind no matter what your speed). The uploader is right though, altitude and heading is critical to adhere to but it is anytime you fly IFR.
Good radio skills by the uploader by the way, that's the only thing that might irritate a controller (a little) if you take forever to read something back.

There's nothing legally wrong with far as i understand other then just a rare sight, the only thing is in some cases if you do happen to fly something small in at a really busy time, ATC may hold you back for the until they are able to put you in the traffic,
I worked at O'Hare long time ago, the ATCs sometimes would get bent....I was sent in to "unbend" them

I love this, I was returning from Eugene Oregon heading back north to harvey airfield (s43) when they cleared me through the class Bravo surrounding seatac Int. I asked if they would be able to squeeze me in for a touch n go at seatac and it wasnt an issue, ended up doing 5 touch and goes :) (this was at 3am)
Brought bake some good old memories for me.
I took flying lessons back in the 70's and got my Associate Science Degree in Aviation Tech from a local college. Got my instrument and multi-engine rating.
The airport I started with and learned to fly in and out of was Cleveland Hopkins Airport.
Not as big as Chicago but still not a small airport. Cleveland does have parallel runways and I just never really thought much about it. On one flight I had a passenger film a United flight landing to the my left at the same time I was landing.
I never did fly into ORD but didn't feel intimidated by it ether. It just never came up as a destination.
Some other notable airports I flew in and out of were TOL, CVG, ATL, and MCO.
Good memories... Life is good!

This reminded me of when I was doing my training out of Colorado, my trainer had me do several touch and go's at Colorado Springs to get the practice of dealing with real air traffic control without having to deal with DIA. Course that was before we had electronics in the aircraft to guide us. All laminated maps, checklists, aluminum flight computers. Nostalgia.
Back during the Vietnam War I was flying freight into Chicago ORD carrying everything from mail to ammunition casings in a Cessna 206 with a beefed up engine and a feathering prop from our Rapid Air base in Milwaukee. Most of the three to five landings, five days a week,were after dark checking in over waypoint Northbrook for a straight in approach at full speed until reaching the freight ramp about three quarters down the left runway to a screeching tuck onto the ramp leading to the Continental freight hangers. Return trips to MKE commenced after being granted an “immediate left hand turn-out, which means taking off from the taxi way. Absolutely glorious memories, even under IFR rules.

I fly in/out of o’hare as a passenger a lot and it’s one of my favorite to be in at a dusk and/or dawn the view is beautiful with Lake Michigan
That'll be $3500 landing fee for sticking your landing gear onto our runway.

@@sdcoinshooter The really funny part is in Canada. John Pearson International Airport in Ontario charges over $5000 for landing fees. Most expensive landing fees is Narita International Airport and Tokyo international airports charge over $6000 for landing fees.

From the air, the LED replacement campaign that the region is going through is remarkably apparent. You can see the line very well where they have yet to replace the sodium vapor lights. I go to Chicago every week, and on the ground it's a whole different experience with the LED's now.
+Michael Tovar Grew up with the orange streetlights, it was practically as bright as daylight all night long. Chicago lights are still more yellow than the surrounding suburbs. Makes it easy to find your house on the video if you live under the flight path like I do : )

I flew a Cessna 172 into ontario international airport to take a radio to an electronics shop just off the very end of the runway. I asked my old instructor if he had any advice for the trip (I was flying VFR) and he said it's a long long runway and if you land too soon, ground control will hate you so touch down at least half way to three quarters down the runway. Touched down right on the line!

They're not super pricy, the flight school near me does the trial flights at $90! That much to taxi the airplane, take off, and fly around for 30 mins with an instructor next to you is a good deal!

When I did my long cross country for my PPL I needed to divert at the end (a long story...), and one of my options was Vancouver International. I would have happily paid the landing fee ($35 for a light single) to have CYVR in my log.

Just completed my first night landing this evening in a 172 M. My home airport (KPBG) is the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base which is uncontrolled airspace and is 11,000’ long. Almost had an anxiety attack watching this !!! Great vid. Thanks for sharing. A good learning tool for us newbies to experience the work load, concentration and attention to detail needed for traveling in class B airspace.
So late a night, It didn't sound like he was too busy. Earlier in the day though, and if they were IFR, simul ILS approaches would have been a lot of extra work to make a hole and slow down the arrivals behind. Surely would have reduced the arrival rate by a few aircraft. They gave you a good time to fly in, as they were still landing at least 2-3 runways. That looked fun. Good job.
