Good video for people learning the Mig-21. The one thing I would add is that you do not need to change the pylon if you are firing the same type of missile. I typically take 2x Radar based missiles and 2x IR missiles. If you just switch from IR and SAR, then just as long as your pylon is selected on anything from 1-4, it will fire off the missile based on your IR/SAR selector. I think the pylon selector is only useful if you are carrying two different versions of the same type of missile (R-60 vs R-55) or if you want to do a salvo shot (I don't know anyone who does that). I was pretty surprised when I found this out because everyone told me you had to change the pylon selector but it doesn't seem to be the case. I think it was a change that the Mig-21 module went through whenever they reworked it. Kind of a nitpicky comment but I only mention it because it's much more easier to manage than having to reach over and turn that nob around. A+ video.
@@TacticalPascale Yeah I was pretty blown away when I found out because all of the documentation that I used/found when I learned the Mig-21 said otherwise. Just take 2x R-3Rs, 2x R-60s, put your pylon selector on anything between 1-4 and then just flip back and forth between SAR/IR mode and fire and you will see the right missiles come off the rails. Kudos to Hadwell because he was the one that taught me that trick. Anyways, sorry for the nitpicky comment, I very much do not like being nitpicky but in this regards it makes life much easier so I just wanted to mention it.
@@Enigma89 It is like so when we were talking about the Bis with the pilots. The config was changed at some point in time when they realised that in a fast chaging combat situation pilots often forget to move the switch to another position and even cannot realise why they cant fire on target.
The horizontal marks are actually your range indication when locked on a target (for the range gates, when the target is centred in the scope). It's not really clearly documented in most places online, so depending who you ask it's either degrees off (which doesn't make sense as the scan zone is +/- 30 degrees in azimuth) or km lateral separation at that distance (which is what I originally thought it was, until I ran the maths to check it), but referencing the pilot's manual along with some testing has enlightened me. In search mode they're meaningless, although you could read them as "10" and "20" for degrees off the nose instead of "5" and "10" for km range I guess. As for the ASP pipper moving to track - this will probably get fixed at some point, it isn't supposed to do that. The pipper is just a simple gyro with no capability of tracking objects, unless you have the realistic option turned off, but tracking the radar-locked target while in missile mode is not something it should do at all and is buggy anyway since it only tracks the vertical plane.
MiG-21bis, together with F-14, Viggen and the new Mi-24, is the most satisfying and enjoyable aircraft i experienced in DCS - they are all Cold War legends. Thanks for the tutorial.
@@macieksoft Actually ducks fly quite well, just like the MiG. The more challenging the better. The worst are full computer control FBW Care free flying iPads when there is no pilot but a system manager inside and flying itself is full automated and trivial.
@@bazej1080 I have tried F-14 for free 2 or 3 times and liked it so much. The only problem was that my PC can barely handle singleplayer so MP was impossible. I have used my secondary touchscreen with Helios software to control RIO buttons and stuff and I was able to fly without Jester at all. That was whole lot of fun of switching between seats and doing 2 men work. Plenty of radar modes to play with and many switches to flip.
Btw for the editor, you can give awacs, or any plane for that matter, an orbit command to make them circle without needing to make a bunch of waypoints. It’s towards the bottom of the aircraft page that comes up when you go to spawn one. “Start enroute task” I believe is the name of the button.
A clarification , if the server is setup to use realistic sights the pipper will never move over the target. To keep the target on your nose you use the a-scope and put the target in the dattum , plus sight, in it.
That was excelent. Don't have the Mig-21 but it's tutorials like yours (not so many like that on the 'tube) that help decide on a DCS module. Keep it going! *subscribed*
Nice video! Saved me a TON of reading and fiddling to figure it out. I have the M21 but haven’t flown it much. Now I need to get back into it! Great tutorial thank you for that! Love your vids!
I think the weapon selector selects first pylon to launch when one single pylon is "selected". But if you keep pressing the weapon release it will select next pylon and launch after a second or so. Similarly if selected pylon is empty it will select the next one and launch if you keep pressing long enough. I need to check again but this is what I remember now through some fog of oldness :d .
I'm om mig21 now and confirm it's doesn't need to be rotate, It's just preferred pylon to start. you can leave it at 1 mean search pylon in sequence 1-2-3-4 until found selected weapon and fire. only problem is 2X R60 in single pylon will fire from selected pylon twice then switch to other side,
Thank you so much for making this. Bought the module yesterday specifically for the Enigma Cold War server where I like to fly my MI-24 and occasionally SU-25A. Can't get into my Mig-29 as you need points and wanted something I could do some A2A in as sometimes there isn't enough Cap on Redfor. The module is gorgeous but I must say. I wasn't impressed with the lessons. No voice, text tries to be funny and also dissappears too quickly. Glad I found a UA-cam video which has lessons on it which I can understand. Easy sub for me
Didn't know locked beam was a feature, thought you always needed to manually lock with the radar cursor. Well now I can really troll the F-18 pilots in my Mig-21 and continue to make content :D :D. Nice video btw. Even I learned a couple really useful things here and there and I've been flying the Mig-21 for a while.
Also you can put your flaps to take off position when over -800 kph and they will stay up cause of speed but if you merge and you have to turn hard in burner as soon as the speed drops they come down and it gives you better and tight turns without you having to remember to deploy them ...
Really good . . . In DCS I cant find how to move the radar target reticle ? And the "Continues" Radar button (sp?) on the radar buttons in the DCS assignment menu is ECM , i thught that is Electronic Counter Measure . . . lots to take in
I have one question I hope you guys can help me with. Whenever I try to lock a target with locked beam mode it seems my plane locks the sky or anything else but the aircraft in front of me every time I put a target in the center of my hud and press the lock button. I realized in the video Tactical Pascale mentions the target designate button, is that a different button or it’s a synonym?
you dont look at the HUD as such you need to position the target on the radar scobe between the two horisontal brackets in the middle and than lock it up with the lock up key . You also need to bind the target designator buttons for up and down and than you can move that bracket up and down until the plane you try to lock falls in and than just press lock :)
Enigma is probably the one you want as it limits the later cold War aircraft. This way stuff like Mig-21s and F-5Es are the mainstay which means you can theoretically play and not get absolutely hammered (I've only just got the Mig-21 and got hammered but that's because I've had it a day and don't know its systems... Hence I'm here watching this video)
Think that locked beam air target lockon isnt possible in rl. Its a leftover from enabling ground lockon for Groms, which isnt possible in rl too. Radar comparison to the western ones at the end is bit silly. Just look at F5s radar.
I'm not saying what's possible IRL, but what we can do in game. I also compared it with the F-18 or F-16 as that's what most players in MP servers fly or are used to. The MiG21 is very different from those modules, with their relatively easy to understand, systems.
The day I choose to learn the MIG-21 I've had and haven't touched for a year, I find this gem. Easiest sub of my life.
Thanks for the sub. More stuff coming soon
