Its worth mentioning if you tick the "realistic" setting for the HUD pipper in special settings (im unsure what its called specifically but you know the one I mean Im sure) you lose the ability to lock a target with the radar, you have to manually guide it in per the mention in the intro.
Right, which is how it would function with an MF (the bis' radar couldn't support the beam-riding missiles it has in DCS, while the MF couldn't support the R-3R, so our bis gets a concession so it can do both). This is also part of why the weapon wasn't popular and wasn't widely used, while the Kh-23 (MCLOS) and Kh-25 (various guidance methods, including laser) were and still are. Worth noting that as it was the first third party module and was originally an FC3 mod, the 21 has a lot of features that don't quite work right, or aren't actually realistic for a bis. The above is only one of them. The CCIP is another - it should only work for guns and rockets, not bombs, and it uses QFE and the aircraft's gyros to work out the slant range much like the Viggen does. In DCS, it instead has an invisible, always-on laser rangefinder (possibly also why the Grom behaves like a Kh-25L when 'locked') and this can be confirmed by Ka-50's LWS freaking out when a 21 flies near it. The ASP in general needs a lot of work to be realistic or in some cases functional. With all that said, it was the first DCS module I actually flew, it's still my favourite, and I'm somewhere up around 1500 hours into it. I've learnt a lot about both the way it works in DCS and the real aircraft along the way.
Nope, you still CAN lock targets for Grom ) But HUD will not react to locking anymore (green "Lock" bulb will still shine and radar will track). And you gonna need to put your sight into manual mode and set "Intercept angle" (the dial on the right) to 2.5 degrees. HUD pipper will slide down slightly, indicating real direction of fixed radar beam. Also you have to set "СС/ГИРО" то "CC" - and you are ready to lock and fire Groms. Enjoy)
Did you drop your centerline tank when pulling out of that attack run on the ship, or did it yank off because of pulling G's all of a sudden? :D #yeeeet
@@wraith444 Seems like at least some version of 21 could and did. "The resulting weapon used the body of a K-8 (AA-3 'Anab') K-5 guidance and propulsion systems but increased the warhead from 13 kg (29 lb) to 100 kg (220 lb).[5] This had the big advantage of allowing the new weapon to be fitted to any aircraft capable of firing the K-5.[3] Design began in 1966,[4] so the project was known as Kh-66 or Izdeliye 66 ('Article 66'). The Kh-66 was a beam-riding weapon that was tested on a MiG-21PFM[4] and entered production in 1968 for that aircraft. The Kh-66 was only an interim solution as it required the launch aircraft to dive towards the target to maintain lock on the target. Flight testing of the Kh-66 began in 1967[1] and it entered service on 20 June 1968.[1]"
OP - to your question: you can tick the realistic setting in the options and lose the ability to get a radar lock, instead you have to aim your reticle manually in order to guide the missile to your target.
@@tomaszwota1465 The thing is, it uses the grid's small X marker down below. The pipper is not used. Also you are still free to use both modes, lock the radar on target or steer the plane to hold the "X" on target.
@@alexandervoigt7313 I'm gonna have to refresh that one in-game, I believe you lose the automatic guiding on radar lock with the "realistic" setting, but I'll have a look at that in the afternoon.
It's one of the latest updates, with "realistic HUD pipper" special setting on. It will not react anymore. And you have to set "intercept angle" manually as well.
The intro is soo cinematic! And your tutorials make it looks easy and simple to learn. Glad you share some love to the Mig21, thats my DCS favourite.
Love that intro man, guess I do need to learn the fishbed properly.... - Caster

Thanks that explains one of my issues. They just seem to shoot forward and drop into the ocean well short of my target. Will change that setting. ;)

@@pack_rat yeah this was a long time ago, the second X on the net gunsight also designates the point of aim for the radar beam.
Lovely tutorials! Short, simple and to the point!!
Really enjoying your videos, thanks for putting them out. I also am enjoying the Mig-21 module, such an interesting aircraft and challenging to learn!
Great vid. Try the rocket assisted, runway bombs. I love using them against blue airfields in the Cold War Server.
MiG-21 will always be my secret love, useless in modern warfare but a blast to fly
best dcs mig series on youtuve thanks for this. Ive found grom to be very good at taking out sam sites as its basically finger of god.
Such a cool jet! Getting more into it and your guides help a lot. Thanks, mate!
Your videos are pure gold! Congrats and thank you!
Not gonna lie, the intro gave me goose bumps :D
Glad you liked it.

lol that center fuel tank going bye bye on the pull away ;)
Yup 🤣🤣🤣
Nice!
Great video and channel. How well do you like flying the Mig 21bis? Looks like it is tempting a little spending on my part.
It’s one of my favourites, along with the F-5 and Spitfire
Mig-21 is the best multirole fighter
LoL
Music is awesome!
Which skin is this? Love the blue cockpit!
Nice one ! Well done !
Hey, thanks for the video! Out of curiosity, what are the differences between real life and DCS employment?
The MiG-21bis can't carry it at all IRL.

Trying to learn the Mirage but I am beginning to wonder if I need a mig in my life🤓
Or if you can handle it
i like to use AGMs on choppers😂 air to air kills with ground weapons are satisfying
Can’t wait for the Apache hunting to start. In Q1
They dont lock on anymore it seems you just have to guide it I dont even have the special option enabled
Tutorial on mig 29 and su 30
i cannot for the life of me get my pipper to stay locked on when i press target lock, my beam is on, radar on, and switches set as yours is.

your loadouts are always wack.
Define “wack”? Did you consider that the load outs are there for demonstration purposes of the weapons I’ll be using.
@@TacticalPascale three fuel tanks ain’t for demonstration purposes, and the skin isn’t either. Those are wack as hell. Wack meaning stupid
