    It never occured to me that "whooping" referred to the sound the inhale makes rather than the cough itself, which was quite confusing, so this is pretty helpful.

    I found a record doing genealogy research that my great great great grandfather had a niece who died at the age of 7 from whooping cough in 1896. I found this video on UA-cam and listened to the child sound. Can’t imagine the suffering of the parents. It almost brought tears to my eyes.

    I have whooping cough and it’s a nightmare. I wasn’t diagnosed until I’d had it for 4 weeks so the antibiotics did nothing to help. Steroids helped a little but the coughing attacks and choking /gasping for breath were terrible and really scary. Sitting up in bed at night helps a little but once you feel the cough coming on, there’s little you can do.
    My GP has reported it to PHE. I’m now in week 8, still getting a very sudden cough but not the choking. Cold air makes it worse so I’m being really careful here in the UK in March.
    I’ve sort of forgotten what it’s like to feel well to be honest. Very tired but just able to do a gentle dog walk now.

    im about a month in but mine has significantly decreased in frequency and id say the best advice for people suffering from this is to just stay calm usually i would panic and i would make the “whooping” sound really aggressively i learnt to control my cough and stay calm whenever it happened especially in the night when it was usually worse for some reason also drink lots of water as it usually helps with bringing out the phlegm 👍

Interestingly I've had a cough for about 2 weeks now with some of these sounds (not at the time) but doctor's have not tested me for whooping cough but given me the same antibiotics to treat it. I'm surprised about not being tested given the advice from PHE and the fact that it's so contagious. • @TmHudsonArt

    I had this at 13 into 14. It literally lasted most of the year. I recall getting what i thought was a cold with a cough in early March as it was just after my nan died end of Feb and that likely didn't help. It wasn't until June that this cough turned into the periodic coughing fits that caused choking and spluttering and sometimes vomiting. The whole experience was truly traumatising and just seeing footage of people having these attacks over 30 years later can set me off in tears. I quickly learned to sleep propped up into a sitting position as I was too terrified to lay down but it would still wake me several times each night. The stage with the coughing fits lasted about 2 weeks then it was just a gradual improvement from there. I recall in the summer holidays about August we were walking in the peak district and the physical exersion climbing hills was making it bad and some other hikers mentioned about it to my dad. The worst thing was that it was never diagnosed. I never had a coughing fit at the docs so he never got to see it. I got antibiotics and an inhaler as he was trying to guess but i knew it was not asthma. One of the halmarks is that your chest sounds clear when they listen to it with this cough. I recall having a coughing fit in the chemist when waiting for the prescriptions and a bunch of other people waiting for theirs were all looking at me in shock horror. I'd say it was back end of the year when I was having the final remnants of that dratted cough. We lost my grandad that November and I was also bullied and beaten up at school at the end of Oct so it was a pretty rubbish year for me.

      💯 Your chest feels clear too, not like "normal " cough, but when the attacks, bouts, fits come you're done. It's a NIGHTMARE. BUT extremely hard to explain to others. Nobody who's not had it can understand our condition. It's not like a regular infection that can be treated easily by medication either. It just lasts a long time, goes on and on. That's scary because cough and cold are not usually like this at all. The time period from infection to cure is so long. You crave natural sources of healing like ginger, you're body craves it, cough syrup helps suppress the SCARY fits lasting hours, which prevents rib damage, muscle pain
      I'm still recovering, started coughing in July, undiagnosed

    I have had it for 2 months now in my 50s , it’s frankly the worst cough I have ever had and the choking part is the worst where momentarily you feel like you could stop breathing and die ! Thankfully it is a brief moment but it is persistent. This video is great wish I’d seen it and gone to the doctors in the 1st week of having it and would advise a swab test to be done in 1st week.
    Cough gradually becomes less violent, choking feeling went after about 4-6 weeks, worst was waking up in night in 2-3rd week and coughing.
    4-6 weeks had a really painful feeling when swallowing behind Adam’s apple. Also horrible tickling feeling in throat for a few weeks but not wanting to induce a cough to avoid choking, yawning, laughing after 4 weeks caused coughing.
    Am now 2 months in and coughing much rarer now but have developed for a week or so very tight asthma (which I suffer from mildly during certain times of the year) would be interested to hear if anyone developed asthma symptoms after 2 months ? Ventolin works to calm it.

      Hello there, I'm 34, have had whooping cough since late July, August 2024, undiagnosed, but learnt about it today.
      I guess since the "most violent of episodes" ended day before and lasted over a month , I'm in recovery /last phase now, will get tested for asthma after this because of your comment.. but don't feel asthmatic issues as of now, fear of another coughing fit is the only obstacle to normal breathing.. Deep breathing, cough syrup, ginger intake, and sitting up really help prevent and cure muscles damage caused by fits of severe coughing

    I'm two months in and while still getting coughing fits the whooping part has just about finished. It was scary as it was hard to get a breath and there was a fear of inhaling mucous from the mouth. I had to sleep sitting up in bed a lot for the first few weeks and poor sleep meant fatigue in the day. Rang the GP's surgery early on but couldn't get an appointment. They offered a respiratory check due to shortness of breath but I'd have to travel to another city for it so I declined and like most other people who've got it just struggle on and wait for the '100 day cough' to work itself out.

      Yes, the urination caused by fits of coughing is THE WORST. There is literally 0 awareness on this infection at present. It takes so long to simmer down. The chocking, the episodes, the loss of sleep because you're up coughing, sleeping in a sitting up posture
      I learnt about it today, till yesterday I thought I'm about to die soon
      Take care

    I’m on week 4-5 now. It’s gotten slightly better and the green phlegm has now become a clear, thick phlegm. Starting to get really bad headaches from coughing so intensely now. General breathing is fine though despite being asthmatic. A crazy infection for sure.

      Thank you so much for watching the video and taking time to leave a comment. Unfortunately (and I know this will be frustrating for you), I am unable to give individual medical advice out on this channel. This is because of medico-legal reasons, not knowing your full case, circumstances, and it would be unethical of me to do so otherwise. I have included the general resources I used to make this video in the description box but I have to advise that you speak to your own health provider (e.g. doctor, nurse) so that they can properly assess your case. This is the safest and most ethical advice I can give since this is just intended as a general educational resource. Thanks for understanding.

    Hi doctor, Can't whooping cough be diagnosed with a blood test? Is it only through throat culture?

    • @novaduh
      @novaduh Рік тому

      Then you’d be testing for bacteremia and/or possibly other types of non related infections/diseases.
      This is a respiratory disease hence why we culture it out via nasopharyngeal . Not blood…then it wouldn’t be respiratory.

    • @barrymorgan4858
      @barrymorgan4858 3 місяці тому

      Yes can be tested by blood test - I did a test after 4 weeks of having it and it couldn’t say whether I had had it, I believe it will only show if you have the test in the first week or so of having it, otherwise I would recommend going down the swab in nose / throat route to get a more definitive answer

    I had a long bout of Whooping cough as a child on top of Bronchitis. Through the years my kids were in school and I worked, the bronchitis would return and when it was bad enough, that distinct cough would return as well; does this mean that the Pertussis can be contracted more than once?

    Pertussis seems to be misunderstood, at least when I look at this paper. Only 0.01-0.1% are symptomatic, and up to 10% of the population (netherlands) get infected. Ie almost nobody gets the cough from it, and there is no 'vaccine herd immunity'. Because for one, the childhood vaccine wears off after about 5 years. Given the super high asymptomatic cases, almost certainly the symptomatics are severely malnourished. No studies are done, other than they found most cases were someone having mutations in the vitamin D receptor.

San diego USA,and Tijuana mexico , share a border, millions crosss daily back and fort. I used the trolley taht week returne here to mexico oct 17, 2023 , with some bad cold, but it develop next day. or maximun 3 days prior I used trolley earlier. in less then 5 days catched an odd flu like cold, then the couging turn badly for weeks , I stayed home 20-25 days, when I went to see doctor, I was told What I had was an acute FAringitis, but the sounds were like the ones here on this video. Doctor check my lungs, NO bronquitis all clear. I told her before, exhaling was in phases, I got tire just talking, so I stop talking, I slowly then exhale, to relax the muscle, sleep sittting down , with lots of pillows. Also the wind felt cold always, I kept covered.

    Is it possible to have whooping cough with milder symptoms? I was vaccinated as a baby but didn't get a booster. Now I think I have it, but the symptoms are milder and short-lasting. I had a dry cough and runny nose for about 1.5 weeks, which I initially thought was allergic asthma. Inhalers and antihistamines gave slight relief, but I then developed severe coughing fits, especially when lying down, with no vomiting but difficulty breathing and gagging. I was coughing exactly like in the video, making the whooping sound. I started antibiotics in the third week, and after four days, the symptoms are less severe. I'm curious if this could be whooping cough, as it seems milder than typical cases, and I can't find another illness with similar symptoms. I haven’t gotten tested as I understand after 3 weeks it is not very detectable, especially in adults.
    FYI the one week that I had this paroxysmal coughing it was probably one of the worst experiences I felt like I would die from choking. Also I was so isolated as I couldn’t do any physical activity cause they triggered the coughing and couldn’t go out with friends coughing every 10 minutes. I got a lot of worrying looks too.
    My heart goes out to anyone experiencing this, even if my case is unrelated. Coughing is quite literally the worst.

My guess is I blacked out, when I woke up I was tingling and didn't feel like I was in my own body, I felt lost and confused and my girlfriend was so worried she sat watching me all night. I have had a lot of thick white mucus on my chest the last week

    I use a spoon of pure honey it’s sooth the throat and remove mucus in the chest it’s work I give it to my 2 Malteses before bed and they walk up in the morning the whooping cough are gone . In winter keep the house warm the right temperature. A freezing house will make it worst . Keep warm many in Australia walk around with gym clothes especially legging and light sport shoes when they should be wearing thick winter trousers , jumpers , jackets and boots like the old days to go outdoors and to work not walk around in gym clothes. You wear winter clothes all winter not only when it too late you are sick you grab only a jackets or scarfs it won’t work keep warm in winter , Autumn and Spring not only when you are sick. A freezing house will make your family sick all winter .

    I'd put money on me having whooping cough about 10 years ago. I've never had a cough like it. I wasn't particularly unwell but would have awful coughing fits out of nowhere that would last a good 2 minutes or so and have me ghasping between coughs. Like to the point I'd be walking down the street and would have to stop to have a coughing attack. It went on for weeks. Such a dry cough that eventually went away thankfully but damn.
