  • 43007 is now in Mexico and after an incident on level crossing has sustained damage. Fortunately no one was injured. On initial impact the front bogie on the power car leaves the rails for a brief moment.
It is now back in revenue earning service in Mexico albeit with the damage still on show.
We were lucky enough to travel on the final timetabled Intercity 125 service in the UK with lead powercar 43007 so also included is some footage from the final day in service.
Final service of scheduled cross country running using 8 car HST at 125mph

The US is pretty bad aswell. Not as bad as Mexico, but rail safety (and general awareness) in the US is worse than in most European countries.
People don't grow up using trains, so they don't take rail safety seriously. The amount of trucks and cars that get hit each year by trains in the US is alot higher than you think. In the UK by comparison, it's extremely rare. And when something does happen it makes National News..... especially if there is a fatality, or fatalities.

@@davidty2006 .... it's also because American railways are so 'open'. By that I mean there's no fencing or wire on either side of the tracks to prevent cars or trucks from entering onto the tracks. And there are few buildings by level crossings because America is so low density.
But add these two factors in addition to people not growing up using trains; and you have the situation where drivers continually misjudge/disrespect railroads and railroad crossings.
Incidents where cars get hit by trains in crossings in the UK, do still happen, but they're extremely rare. In America they're much more common.
In the UK we are brought up to respect railways more and recognise the many dangers they pose, at the same time. None of this is evident with Americans.

Note to the Mexican train authorities:- it is possible to improve the frontal collision performance of the Class 43. The Australian XPTs used in New South Wales have additional horizontally mounted steel bars hidden under an additional front spoiler. Contacts in the UK may be able to provide the drawings.

Nice to see Mexico returning to passenger trains- passenger trains have been absent for so long there, our old HSTs will be the first trains many people will have travelled on. 43002: Reliveried to celebrate the 40th anniversary of HSTs and named Sir Kenneth Grange. Retired after the final day of GWR HSTs and donated to the NRM.
43206 and 43312: Reliveried alongside shortened carriage set EC56, did the four day farewell tour and buggered off to Ely. Coaches turned to hotels. Currently, the duo is on a boat to Nigeria and will run there until the end of Christendom.
43312: See 43206, consequently the final result having mismatched powercar set numbers (253003 on 43206 and 254029 on 43312, despite the OTHER powercar of 254029 (43313) still being intact).
43007: Sloppily reliveried into this crooked mess and yoinked to Mexico after a few runs.

The Class 43 specifically isn't suited to running in Mexico, because it's made of fibreglass and has no reinforced crash structures.
