SWANSONG for Total Colas Ribble Rail Oil Tanker moves 56049 20/1/25
Morning spent chasing Grid 56049 on the Total Colas - Ribble Rail Oil Tanker empties moves starting with the last ever tanks arrival across Strand Road.
We then follow the 56 to the sidings on Preston Docks to run around the freight with the Ribble Rail Sentinel doing some shunting too before departure of the Grid with a different tank set then back across the level crossing.
With the train scheduled to be at the next location in the same time as it would take us to get there we chase it over to Blackburn to see if we can catch it going up the bank! The train was then heading to Eastriggs M.O.D. for storage of the tankers.
Grand morning out and good to see fellow enthusiast Luke aka Francis up in the Northwest again enjoying some Class 56 action! No tandem today sadly but a spot of running down the road like us for more shots as you’ll see. Is running with a camera an official sport yet?
Location 1 - Strand Road, Preston
Location 2 - Colas Ribble Rail Sidings, Preston
Location 3 - Brownhill, Blackburn
Apparently the last tankers are due to leave next month so if you fancy a trip to Preston to catch it we’ll do our best to keep you posted!

Bro did you rob them
Those Sentinels are nippy little things
Aren’t they just!
However gratfull I am of the HSTs being used in Mexico and Nigeria I personally think they should all still be in use here in the UK. They are more comfortable, have better luggage racks, manual doors and are on the whole better than the Class 800 series. The only drawback is they only pull 9 coaches max but in theory two sets could be coupled to each other. But I think they look and sound great :)
Completely agree! Thank the Department for transports daft aims of making everyone suffer for the sake of a few disabled passengers who may or may not chose the travel and the crackpot idea of chasing net zero
The guessing comments on here from those outside of the industries employment are hilarious. Oh dear. JG.
If you have the knowledge on these things buddy please let us know what’s what as we’d be very interested 👍🏼
Done quite a bit of work with the lads who work at Ribble steam , Martin and paul . Two cracking railwaymen .
Grand chaps I’m sure cheers 🍻
Shame to see these go, ribble rail will keep this branch active though
Nice horn from that Class 56 as well.
Must be the widest half barrier crossing I have seen. The barriers stayed down a strangely long time after the train had cleared the crossing, which doesn't help convince drivers to be patient at level crossings!
There's railway guys in the road too and enough noise and lights really. Ironically they've just spent a load of money doing the crossing up and now it wont get a lot of use sadly
@@RailwayTavern That sounds like the UK's fragmented transport thinking to a 'T'!
Great video I saw this wasn’t sure it was still in use but saddened by the news which leads me to getting out my soapbox out. It’s systematic of this Country to stop using the bl****y obvious method of moving large volume freight across distances and put it into the road haulage system ; clogging up the roads, wearing out a poorly maintained infrastructure. Then 60+ years later comeback with let’s encourage more rail use, politicians quite simply aren’t fit for purpose. So why is it that around the world, railways would seem to be working efficiently. If the current govt wants prosperity and growth then invest in the infrastructure and make it so as railways carry the bulk of freight.
Give it 10 years and we'll be putting all this stuff back again. Much like the royal mail train last year and the old story of closing lines and demolishing railway stations or trams systems, someone then realises it was actually a good idea and we spend lots of money putting everything back. In the meantime yes enjoy the extra road traffic sadly.
Second to last I believe there is another rake of wagons down there that will be moving shortly so keep an eye out for that!
2 rakes I believe, depends if they will leave together I guess once they're cleaned up
Pictures paint a thousand word. Don't need music.
I’m disappointed that freight trains on this line are coming to an end. I hope the heritage railway will be allowed to run trains to just short of the West Coast Main Line, and keep this section of track in use.
I think movements in and out of the museum there will still use the line but I don't think theyres allowed across strand road otherwise with fare paying passengers.
Very nice, thumbs up :)
SAD. got the whole journey on DVD . riding the COLAS OIL TRAIN PRESTON TO LINDSEY with colas class 60 60095 which I Think has changed hands
Nice one Ian. In the 1980s I worked at an office overlooking the Strand Road crossing. Traffic was controlled by a man with a red flag. I remember double headed 37s powering up the incline towards Preston - great noise from an open window. Later there were some 56s. Happy days 😊
Now those were the days! Much as I like a 56 I'd take a few 37s any day! How many days a week did the crossing get traffic in those days?
@ I can’t say as I wasn’t in the office all day / everyday. I seem to remember one at around 8-8.30 on Friday morning, but it’s a long time ago. I remembered the 56s as they were quite new and very different than the shabby 37s. 🤔😊
@ end of feb I think for the last move if you want to reminisce!
Impressive haul there, 12 tankers, just shows those "shifty fix,s" still have what it takes...interesting shunt moves as well, that shunt loco was very nippy, much quicker than a "gronk"...😁
Yea the pickup on the shunter was really something!
I live opposite the swing Bridge and often watch the trains from my home office. I thought they were brilliant. I'll miss them...
Great location to live! You'll still get the stuff at the weekend but only a few more crosses of the tankers for now
Nice vid love the class56s . Hope it will not go to road trans has there is a shortage of hgv driver . Let the train take the strain.
Very interesting, did this branch on a rail tour a few years back. Thanks for posting.
Nice one, what was pulling the tour you were on?
Love 💕 videography
cheers buddy
What a great vid, nice to see a 56 on tankers..Was that an illegal move by the white van man at 2.37 who pulled out from the left crossed passed the traffic island whilst the barriers were down and just went on his merry way .
I wondered that too, unless it was one of the groundstaff for the train?
Not sure about the legality but, if you look on Google Maps, there isn't a road there. Looks like the van was parked on a bit of ground between the railway line and a property boundary wall, near the gate where the railway heads up towards the station. So probably was a railway employee.
Ahh yes, silly me , I realised that myself on watching again , thank you though for clarifing that. Good day to you .
Yes the van is part of the Colas setup and was heading to the next location to change the points I think
@ Shame they don't paint their vans in the same cool colour scheme as their locomotives! 😁
Very interesting information
Nice footage
Thanking you most kindly from English England
@@moormoor4281 thanks
Hi. The tonnages have dropped dramatically since before covid and VTG the owners of the tankers where wanting to considerable increase the leasing charges making using rail no viable to Total.
thanks for the info, there was still a good 2 or 3 trains a week going in with circa 8 tankers I think? That's a lot to go on the road and pretty daft by VTG business wise if there are no other immediate takers for the tankers. Is it going by road now to the same location do you know? Cheers 🍻
Super coverage, nice to hear a few tones too. 56049 has been a regular on this run, just saw it today light engine through Preston too. 👍👍👍
Cheers buddy, nice one 🍻
Great footage thanks for sharing 👍
Cheers buddy 🍻
So why did it stop running then ? Is it switching to road ? ( as I heard somewhere else ) Which company ran this train and which company decided to switch it to road transport ? I want to make a complaint ! If Rail freight can't make it work over that distance there isn't much hope for other flows is there !! Rail freight should be subsidized to keep it off the roads
Totally with you buddy. Ironically Total was the customer using the tanks but apparently the owner of the tanks put the price up making it cheaper to go by road. Yes makes no sense does it but such is the UK at the moment! Cheers🍻
Too uneconomical this ran to Lindsay oil terminal
Don't know how the capacity of the rail wagons compares to road tankers but the loss of that train alone will add quite a bit more traffic to our already overcrowded road network.
@@RailwayTavern Well, presumably, they put their price up because their costs increased.
Didn't know u had to run around the tanks and go out the opposite way?
I am lead to believe that the tanks taken to Ribble Rail Preston are to be steam cleaned out and then taken for storage at Eastriggs some time in February 2025
Yes your intel is the same as mine at the minute, not sure what the plan is for the tanks after, hopefully we can find some work for them. Cheers 🍻
@ the information did come from a colas driver, so could be reasonable accurate, with tanks being left for cleaning.
brilliant footage mate just sad that this has now ceased but what a nice way to end with a 56 lovely
Yes was hoping for a 56 and we got one! End of Feb still we think for the last tanks leaving, maybe another 56 if we're lucky! Cheers 🍻
a 56 on oil tanks what a site
Yes, often a weekly sight until last year, check out some of our previous videos with them in action if you want another hit! Cheers buddy 🍻
Lovely ex Lms black 5
Very nice indeed, shame it has to end, but great captures, cheers . 👍
Thanks Steve, yes bit by bit I kinda feel we're chasing one 'last' thing after another at the moment. Its a shame but maybe we can turn it around and get some freight back on the rails soon if some changes are made. Cheers 🍻
No more trains on this line? Or no class 56
The bitumen plant (total or lanfina) are using road haulage going forward so I believe.
One more at the end of Feb we think then that's all for the moment unless rail freight gets some changes made to make it more financially viable
Excellent footage! I must have been stood just further along from you at Brownhill! I'm led to believe that there is one last Preston - Eastriggs movement, rumoured to be around the end of February.
Cheers buddy, yea I was the last to arrive, lucky it was delayed a tad leaving Preston else I think we'd have been struggling! 28th at the moment i think but could change before then. See you next time 🍻
Blue shunter had a bit of pep!
haha didn't it, and driving it like just like his hornby model i reckon!
@jdemmz Good old Sentinels , surprising how a 0.4.0 without connecting rods can get so much traction especially when working a heavy train but they were great industrial locos and up for the job .
Nice touch with the headboard❤
Drive it like you stole it!
Excellent footage 👍
Cheers 🍻
Excellent video. Were you wearing a Bob Inn hat today?
Cheers buddy, plenty of action today!Alas that’s not a hat I have in the headwear armoury, black hat and body warmer with red fleece on underneath today! Lucky the rain stayed off!

Less crashy I imagine too!
The attention to detail is incredible. And beautifully shot and edited. I would love for you to add natural outdoor sounds to your amazing overall, well produced production. This was nicely done.
