    "A husband is not to look at, a husband is to get!" Declared by the mother with a hard face and fist in the air! Hahaha, love it!!

    She's probably the most flexible role in the whole show - I've seen her played by all types, short women, tall women, with higher or lower voices, even by a few men.

    No, not quite: "Yenta" is actually a respectable Yiddish name that has been used for centuries. Only since the popularity of FIDDLER has the name of this character become a synonym for the nouns "a busybody" and "a gossip." (In use: "Jan is such a Yenta.") Interesting, huh :-)

  • @catherinehazur7336

    It is a fantastic character part. Wonderful monologue. Totally see the late Bea Arthur in that role. Molly Picon a classic Yiddish theater actress. Stellar casting!

    • @littlemarmoset
      @littlemarmoset Рік тому

      I'm sure that seeing such a diminutive actress in this movie playing this part has prejudiced me, but as brilliant a comedienne as Bea Arthur was, I find her larger-than-life stature too imposing for this character.

    • @catherinehazur7336
      @catherinehazur7336 Рік тому

      @@littlemarmoset it's a great part and Yente has one of the best stage monologues ever.......Didn't Molly Picon have that part on the LONDON stage? A renowned Yiddish theater veteran!
      I totally respect your opinion, Scott, but I am glad Bea Arthur was cast in that role. The way I see it, Yente was meant to be a TYPE, a larger than life character. She used to wield a lot of influence in the shtetl community, but in the course of the play, it is drastically reduced.
      Anyway, with or without Bea Arthur, it is one of the best parts ever for an older woman

      @littlemarmoset Рік тому +1

      @@catherinehazur7336 After I wrote that, I found out that Bea Arthur *had* played the part on Broadway, so I stand corrected. I'm sure if I'd seen her Yente instead of the one in "Fiddler," I'd have raved about *that* performance. As I said, she certainly was a *brilliant* comedienne, with one of the best senses of timing I've ever experienced! Thanks for your reply. I'm sure it's a super fun part to play.

    In Yiddish Yente is not a name; it's a term for a meddling busybody, normally referring to a woman. Case in point: she opened up Hodel's letter from Perchik.

    Yente is attempting to set Lazar Wolf up with Tzeitel, but personally, I think I know a much more practical wife for Lazar: Yente herself. Anyone agree?

      It depends on what Lazar Wolf wants from a wife. If he wants a companion, Yente would be fantastic! If he wants someone to give him children (of which he doesn’t seem to have any), then someone younger would be better (from his POV, anyway).
