    When my elderly grandmother was moved to assisted living at ~85, her only concern was how unfair it was for her to still be alive after my 49 year old father had died of pneumonia (not covid - this was 20 years ago). With all due respect to the very elderly, who should of course be cherished and better integrated into the rest of the world - the mental health and future of children, and the ability of their parents to support them financially, is a more important consideration than prolonging the lives of people who can't survive a moderate virus.
    - If you ask me, governments were all scared into action by the media and pharma lobbyists (I include the Gates Foundation and pharma-funded universities in this), and once they acted had no way of retreating as it would open them up to an avalanche of wrongful death lawsuits. Same way they quietly retreated from using ventilators - they knew it was wrong and the cause of mass death, but couldn't admit it. This has been the stupidest period in human history.

      I dont think there was anything deliberately scary. It is just that the media focused on China buildijg a hospital in 5 days. The Chinese feared something like the first SARS, and then there was the images from Italy. They had a big influence. From there it just took off.

      I got lost when you called it moderate virus. As compared to Ebola? We are on our way to losing 200,000 deaths. If our bodies didn't respond so severely and it wasn't causing all age ranges I would agree. I lost a 17 yrs old patient. I lost a 24 yrs old patient. I lost a 43 yrs old patient. My co worker in pediatrics lost a 7 years old patient. Its moderate to you till it happens to you.

      @@arezooshaytoon According to WHO, seasonal flu causes 250-500,000 deaths per year. I don't know what country you're in but the US CDC publishes statistics of deaths from seasonal flu, and there are many more deaths of young people each year of seasonal flu than there are of Covid-19. Life is tragic, but you can't lock the world down or everyone goes broke and starves.

    My son had a weird cold during the last week of January, and just for grins got tested for antibodies a couple of weeks ago. Turns out he did have the ‘Rona and was probably infecting tons of other people since he serves beer at a microbrewery. All his co-workers and lots of customers were sick during that same period, but everyone recovered without problems. So we’re probably closer to herd immunity than the experts want to admit.

      MrDandaowen The current reported number of active COVID-19 cases in Australia at May 20 was about 600. And even if we’ve only diagnosed one in every ten people currently infected, this still represents less than 0.03% of the population.

    • @marcusdavis2208
      @marcusdavis2208 4 роки тому

      MrDandaowen While we’re still establishing the specificity of tests for SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19), early evidence suggests an estimate of 99% or greater is reasonable.
      However, following the same calculations as in the example above, at a prevalence of 0.03%, even a test with 99.9% specificity would mean only 30% of people who test positive actually have the condition. This means more than two-thirds of positive results would actually be false positives if we were testing asymptomatic people with no increased risk.

    He's absolutely right about assigning C-19 as cause of death. Here in the UK it's felt like we're desperate to get to the top of the league table. If C-19 was present at death, even if that's not proven to be the cause, C-19 goes on the death certificate as cause of death. The death toll specifically due to C-19 has been estimated by some to be more like 15k which is well in line with seasonal trends.

    • @johnforde7735
      @johnforde7735 4 роки тому

      "Here in the UK it's felt like we're desperate to get to the top of the league table. " I would doubt that is the case.
      Different countries count deaths differently and it would be good to have a global standard. It's consistency that we want, not necessarily an absolute exact number. And it is not an exact science. Counting patients with C-19 even if it hasn't been proven to be the cause of death probably paints a more accurate picture than not because there is no way to prove any cause of death, but it is reasonable to assume that C-19 played a role in the death. This may not always be the case, but on balance will get a more accurate number. Not counting such cases or not testing for C-19 would result in an undercounting.

    Though I think he's hopelessly naive when he says he'd like to see a world government. Most of us aren't as brilliant as Professor Levitt, but we can jolly well see what would happen if they started publishing global deaths like the Stock Market, every time there was the hint of a crash the politicians would start running about like headless chickens, as they have done on this occasion (and as John obviously thinks in that point in the interview!)

    Saturation at 20% could be occurring because our innate immune system is able to prevent detectable infection without ever getting the adaptive immune system involved. If this is the case then indeed we would not expect to see a second wave in those areas that reached 20% but we will in an area that didn’t. In fact in those areas where far less than 20% was reached we would be seeing a first rather than second wave.

      Agree. It's a man made virus made in China, funded with US dollars by Dr Fauci (since gain-of-function research was shutdown because it was too dangerous). As expected with many things man-made the wheels are falling off C19 as many reports coming in from around the globe that it is becoming less deadly. Australia with just 0.22 days death to C19, whereas influenza last season saw 2.2 death days (and that is with a vaccine and tamiflu). But instead of looking at excess mortality - the 24/7 news cycle is focused on cases. Why? The Australian goverment should have followed Sweden's approach- instead we have cut off both legs to remove a tumour from our big left toe.

    Agree with a lot he says but using the term Global warming kind of demeans his credibility, as in my opinion I view global warming in the same way as I do Covid1984

    Perhaps the outcome will show that medicine has hijacked our health concerns and that most people heal anyway so that in the future people will take more responsibility for their health leaving medical establishments free to treat those who truly need medical intervention.

    There are counter examples to his theory: Israel, New York, so he gives various explanations that don't add up.
    Of course there is some truth to what he says, but somehow it is not the whole picture.
    There are many many questions.

    I would be interested in hearing if Professor Levitt has some opinion on how Norway and Sweden can be so different. Have they simply managed to avoid reaching 500 deaths per million? And correct, face masks as is common curtesy in Asia, is surely the way to avoid lockdown hysteria.

    • @stupidas9466
      @stupidas9466 4 роки тому +1

      Gustav Skans Norway managed to avoid 500/million because they took distancing measures seriously. Sweden has, so far, because some people took distancing measures seriously, but they will soon pass 500/million and continue upward because of their failure as a country as a whole to take distancing measures seriously enough. Sweden at this point is having more deaths than it's nordic neighbours combined are having new cases. Norway is in an okay position economically and a fantastic position going forward with minimal suffering and death. Sweden is in an okay position economically and a poor position going forward with a large amount of suffering and death. By every measure, Sweden's handling of this pandemic has been an abject failure.

    This man said Covid-19 "had a different name back then, SARS". This man has zero credibility in virology, immunology, and epidemiology. That is tantamount to saying an aardwolf and a chihuahua are the same thing. Please don't listen to a thing he says. If he does say something accurate it will only be coincidental. Get your information from respected virologist, immunologists, and epidemiologists.

    22:10 ? The lockdown didn't work in countries like UK and US that had non-unified leadership, didn't close the border. In other words people didn't "allow" government to control society for a short period. In all other countries however it worked well, Denmark is better off than Sweden for a far better public health outcome, despite the fact Sweden is further north and more geographically isolated from mainland EU.

    I do think this professor has a good grasp on the finances of the effect of Covid. I do feel that Covid has killed people with limited lifespan. And I hope that this will reflect in a lack of deaths for elderly next year. I think that the ventilator issue should be ignored as ventilation is a do or die action. Think of it as saving 25% if you can do it and pay for the aftercare, so be it.
