Well this is absolutely awesome. Love Brad and Megans input into the Bond discussion and I didn't scream "Stop getting Bond WRONG!" once
Brutal 'to be continued' edit! I nearly got whiplash!
A surprise to be sure but a welcome one
I respect that Duncan has [the odd watch party not withstanding] largely stayed off Bond for a while so It's nice to see this video and hear a relaxed discussion on the series. Great to see Brad back and nice to have input from Megan too.
The bit about Connery being frisked is so true. I always found it hilarious! Good stuff!
Also, just gotta say I love Brad's passion for films. I was lucky enough to be in Brad's presence at the TTYB meetup and the dude LIVES for film - and he got a round in at the pub afterwards so you know he's a solid bloke.
I'm SO here for this. We're doing a Bond-athon with Duncan, Brad and the lovely Megan. Hopefully Duncan has allowed time for Sunny Delight, fishcakes and dump (allowing for complications).
Put the roast on when the moonbuggy appears!
I only JUST now realised that a Gremlin was flashing us through the entire video on a second watch through. THAT'S how good this was because I was so focused on Duncan, Brad and Megan talking about Connery and the boring Australian lad who wot done a Bond.
Can't wait for the next part
In a parallel universe, Brad directed a Bond movie called "Barrel of Skellingtons" starring Duncan as 007 and Richard as Nick Nack.
Brad Watsons "No Time to Only Live in a Barrel of Skellingtons" would be class. And I think Richard would need to be cast as "Dix Abundant". No reason why the Bond girls shouldn't be the only ones to get punny nicknames
@@stevena488 An even better name, Lou Skhunt.
I've only watched some of classic bond at the age of 14, while nursing a scorching sunburn, so I won't chime in since I'll get Bond all wrong. Bit of bush, what was that, oh too late. Glangalang, alangalang.
🎶"BAAAABY, YOU'RE THE BEEEEST!"🎶
Duncan keeps a pistol on the coffee table. I'm choosing to think it's in case his secret mutated brother breaks out of the cellar. Great Bond discussion btw.
Not my coffee table 😉
Coffee table shaming. Love what you guys do.
Excited for this series, sean connery is 007!
He's one of them.
Can't wait for Part 2.
I'll throw my two cents if anyone cares: The rights to Casino Royale were sold separately years before the EON series started which lead to the infamous 1967 'comedy' film.
Dr No: Pretty much 'the pilot' for the series to grow from given the low budget. Dr No and Honey are not actually in that much of the film but it's a good start.
FRWL: Quite different from later Bond's [with Bond not on screen for the first 20 minutes] and is an excellent thriller. Robert Shaw is a great villain and the train fight is a classic for a reason. Until Madeline Swan, Sylvia Trench was the only 'Bond girl' to appear in two films [for about 5 mins each].
Goldfinger: Sorry guys but this is a classic for me! Oddjob and Goldfinger are excellent adversaries. The fort Knox set [a location not actually visited in the book] is magnificent.
Thunderball: Adjusted for inflation it's box office wasn't actually beaten until Skyfall. Does have pacing issues but is entertaining [with the jet pack being a highlight].
You Only Live Twice: Behind the scenes tensions seeped into the production as Connery looks disinterested. Aki and Kissy should have been one character and Helga is a lesser Fiona from Thunderball. Worth persevering with [including a cameo from the Rock's grandfather!] for the excellent climax but would be remade and improved later.
OHMSS: Agree it's overrated as Lazenby [out of his depth, was hard to work with and jumped before he was pushed] and director Peter Hunt [who's 80's directorial efforts are poor] are hyped up a lot in the fan base now. Diana Rigg and Telly Savalas do lift the film above it's star.
Diamonds: Did set the tone for Moore to follow and saw a bump in the box office from OHMSS so did keep the series going but the production+ supporting actor quality is poor due to Connery's pay check and a rushed filming schedule.
Fantastic discussion guys and gal looking forward to Richard's Trek talk too
Only seen Goldfinger but I understand points raised.
"Bond, only Bond"
My thoughts on these Bond films are as follows.
Dr. No: A very vanilla film (but considering that this was the first Bond film to be made, it can be excused for that) but as soon as Honey comes out of the ocean, the film suddenly becomes really good.
From Russia with Love: My personal favourite Connery Bond film. It's without a doubt the most Cold War-esque Bond film we'll ever get and it has a really great cast and story.
Goldfinger: A great movie that really cemented Bond as an icon of cinema with the villains, gadgets and spectacle, but it does have its moments where it does lull a bit. The golfing scene is quite boring (then again, I'm not a fan of golf in general) and the Kentucky ranch part feels very slow. Great film, but it wouldn't be in my Top 10 Bond films list.
Thunderball: Or as me and my parents call it, ThunderBORE. I've always found this one to be really slow and meandering, even though the plot of the film is to hunt down two nuclear bombs before they are detonated. The underwater fight sequence is so tedious and the final fight between Bond and Largo is so laughable because of the choppy editing and the film being sped up. This is meant to be the Bond film at the peak of Bondmania and yet, I just can't see the hype around this film at all.
You Only Live Twice: I've often felt that this film deserved the hype that Thunderball was getting. It's my second favourite Connery film and I have a lot of fun watching it. The whole Bond becoming Japanese had always made me laugh because when I watched it as a kid, I honestly couldn't tell that he was meant to be in disguise. And Donald Pleasence's Blofeld maybe one of the most iconic villains in history, but I've often found his performance to be a bit meh.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service: I think this is one of the most beautifully shot Bond films with great cinematography, great directing and great acting from the likes of Diana Rigg and Telly Savalis (who's my personal favourite Blofeld). I know it's very popular to ridicule Lazenby's acting, but I honestly like him in this film. And you've got to give the guy props for bullshitting his way into landing the biggest gig in film history.
Diamonds Are Forever: This is by far the greatest Bond film...
to watch on a Sunday afternoon.
Yes it's rather tacky, it's very cheap, the action is about as epic as watching some elderly person trying to find a parking space in an Asda car park and lacks the elegance and style that Bond is known for, but I can't help but enjoy the characters and the dialogue. This is definitely my guilty pleasure Bond film and I'm not ashamed to say that.
I agree with Duncan about Goldfinger. Always loved Thunderball and You Only Live Twice, particularly YOLT. OHMSS is up there as perhaps my favourite of the entire lot. As for Diamonds… I love it. It was my dads favourite when he was a kid and it’s not a classic film but it’s top entertainment and it’s nice watching Connery having fun in it - which is also why I like Never Say Never Again.
Great vid 👌
I enjoy listening to Val Verde Broadcasting talk about pretty much everything, but I am especially enjoying your Bond coverage. I rate Dr No very highly, YOLT very highly, and OHMSS. I don’t like FRWL as much as you do. I agree with you about Goldfinger, Thunderball, and mostly Diamonds (but it’s still fun).
Dr. No has gone way up in my estimation over time 👍
Is Duncan evoking Bond or is he evoking Logan Ash from No Time To Die with his outfit?
I’m evoking me in the balmy British heat, dear fellow
@@chumpey I know, I just found it a funny coincidence.
I adore From Russia With Love it's made its way up my list without me realising it.
Its a wonderful spy thriller.
As this has gone up on my list Goldfinger has dropped. Though i do still love tbe golf scene. Connery is having fun and it shows
I wasn't expecting Yuzo Koshiro to break out at the end.
OHMSS - don't agree. I think it has far more going for it than just a 'gritty ending'. Lazenby's weakest scenes are at the beginning (which I think hurts people's overall impression of him). He's not good at the suave charmer stuff, but later during the more sincere moments with Diana Rigg he does well.
I actually think his best scene is with Tracey in the barn during the snowstorm (rather than the final death scene).
That film also has a fantastic extended chase sequence (ski chase etc) that's brilliantly paced and edited.
From Russia with Love is easily in my top 5 but it peaks at that amazing train sequence and the rest is kinda going through the motions. Goldfinger suffers with Bond basically hanging out with the villain for half of it. Thunderball actually has improved for me over time, despite the Benny Hill finale. The poisoning scene in YOLT definititly made an impact on me as kid. Lazenby had such big shoes to fill for 'OHMSS' with much more of a demanding role, so I'll always give him credit. The film itself is also one of the best best Bond plots. And the final scene is such a gut-punch. Diamonds is basically shit... just shit, the worst Bond film of all.
The post train bit in FRWL is very clearly inspired by North By North West and is shoe horned in to add more action as it isn't in the novel.
Interesting discussion Sean Connery is my favorite bond I'm with Megan Lazenby doesn't compare to Connery he's the worst part of a decent movie
Hey great discussion guys but what’s going on at 39:00 to the end? Was this a mistake in the edit? I’m not entirely sure what’s going on there.
It’s a very abrupt end to this section of the discussion. But don’t worry… we’ll be back with Moore👍
Not just the abrupt ending, that’s fine, but if you scroll through the Patreon credits, you’ll see you and Richard talking and the credits being adjusted. Not a huge deal obviously, just my amateur editor brain being autistic and couldn’t help but bring it up :)
Wait a minute, please. So, OHMSS is silly - but You Only Live Twice is not? I'll need a few days to get my head around that logic.
Who said that?
@@ValVerdeBroadcasting Both Brad and Duncan spoke about the overal plot of OHMSS being silly - which, granted, it is. However, is it any less so than You Only Live Twice's volcano lair or general story? And let's be honest, most Bond storylines are just silly. It's part of the franchise's charm when done right. That said, I do look forward to watching Part 2.
@@LeeHutchingsdrumsUK I don't think we said that it was silly by comparison to You Only Live Twice. And yeah: they are all rather silly...what's your point?
@@ValVerdeBroadcasting The silly villain ploy aside, OHMSS is worthy of the praise given to it these past years. But that's my opinion - which could have been more clear. No offence meant, and I'm glad Brad likes You Only Live Twice.
Always a pleasure to lead a virgin through the Bond bush. I've bagged too myshelf. When I watch DAF, I like to think that Connery is playing a Bond who's out of it cause his wife has just been murdered, but he's trying his best to put one foot in front of the other. I also thought Lazenby was great. There are many roles where a better actor doesn't make a better performance. I think Craig often over cooks it.
I really don't like Lazenby but each to there own [we'll never know what an experienced actor could have done with the OHMSS script]. Roger Moore was a good example of what you say though in that he by his own admission wasn't the greatest/most versatile actor but Bond [and similar role in the Saint and Persuaders] played to his strengths and his charm/charisma helped him be very successful.
Video just cuts out 42mins in. What happened?
Check the title 😉
@@ValVerdeBroadcasting when’s part 2?? 😄
Timothy Dalton, FTW.
One tiny bit of criticism here: two of your three mics were way to low.
It's almost like you get what you pay for innit?
@@simonkramer9463 👏 👏 👏
OHMSS is brilliant and still my favourite! Sorry to disagree.
don't be!
The audio and video is out of sync
