V8 Quattro Rally: Audi's Ultimate Send-It Machine | RadVentures

- The name ‘Quattro’ has been synonymous with rally and ski communities since the early 80’s. On the world stage, Audi changed rallying history forever when they developed the Quattro driveline.
When Stig Blomqvist claimed the driver and manufacturer world rally titles in 1984 for Audi, it rendered rear-wheel-drive obsolete in competition, and opened up a new future for the Quattro driveline on a consumer level. Audi marketed heavily to outdoor adventure enthusiasts, so growing up, Ryan lusted after the adventure car with four circles on the grille.
The Audi 4000 Quattro was the test mule for their all-wheel-drive platform. Ryan takes a trip down memory lane, driving a stock 1986 4000CS on a snowy day. The Quattro easily plows through the rough road conditions to a secret parking spot where Ryan accesses his favorite mogul runs.
But it’s not just all historic Audi in this one. The Quattro platform is still alive and well, and robust enough to handle some modern power. Ryan drives a proper Audi 80 Rally Car recently imported from Latvia. It’s secret: There’s a 1998 A8 V8 motor under the hood and, boy, does it rip the gravel roads!

I love what Hagerty has done with their channel. This is properly good motoring content!
Little bit crappy.
@@elczupaqbre wtf you mean? These videos are incredibly well made! And they are 100% free
@@realkilju Bro these are some of the best car videos on UA-cam and this channel gets no views. I just stumbled upon this channel a few weeks ago
@@SwisherNoSweets these vids are so good, the first one i saw was the mercedes sedan video
High quality video for sure
Another awesome film! I love how Hagerty was like "hey remember when /drive was awesome? What if we just hired all of those people to do the exact same thing?"
Great comment. Hagerty is killing it right now!
Hah! Was thinking the exact same thing during this video! :)
thumbs up from Latvia!
You know your quattros up there
Confirmed: That is the most 1993 skiing since 1993.
Hahaha! I put a lot of effort into that bit to make it look 'RAD' :)
@@RyanSymancek That part was great!
fax
Audi’s Inline 5 engine and sound can never be beaten, it sounds orgasmic.
Dear sir can I bring your attention to the 3.2L in-line 6 S54 with a carbon intake on the E46 M3 CSL. Pure induction noice.
@@ronyjameson8798 the exhaust notes tho 😬
My Fiat Coupe 20vt disagrees
As someone who had one back in the late 2000s (it’s actually my dads car)
I agree. I say it was the best sounding one. I need to upload that video one day.
2.1 with a scorpion Exhaust= 👌
The production quality is off the charts! Loving the fact that you can hear the sound of the engine so well, and that's on top of the beautiful shots. Fantastic video!
Once he opened the hood on Cheeto it was nostalgic for me. First car in high school was a 1998 A8 Quattro 4.2. Best car I’ve ever driven. Spent my whole summer in 2014 with my dad getting it running cherry. I took it up the mountains in the snow and it handled amazingly. The car would grip every turn and you’d just want to slam the gas pedal to the floor. Such an awesome video.
1998 A8 4.2 was my 2nd car in high school fun amazing car and 4 years after selling it, it showed up to my shop today, but I do love my current b8.5 S4 with the Sport Diff❤️
That I5 engine sound though 👍🏻
3:50 ‘ after introduction of 4wheel drive, no 2wheel drive car won the drivers or constructors championship ‘..... Audi won the constructors in 1982, but Lancia won it in 1983 with the 2wheel drive Lancia Rally 037 !
Yes, also Walter Röhrl, who was driving for Lancia at the time, didnt want to win the championship, nor did he want to drive in certain rallys. lol. And they won anyways.
Bingo! Beat me to it. I heard him say that and I just attributed it to him being an audi fanboy.
You're misinterpreting the quote, which I guess I coulda written a little better. What I said was that after Audi took and manufacturers and drivers titles twice, there would never be another 2WD rally car to win the world championship. They completed winning two titles in the 1984 season... after the battle with Lancia's 037. But I'm very much aware of the 037 Quattro battle of '83.
@@RyanSymancek He is not misrepresenting your quote I think you should listen it again yourself. You've said 'Once Audi claimed these titles there would never be another 2 wheel drive rally car to win the manufacturers or drivers world championship'. I think he is right your statement is incorrect. Anyways it's a great video.
Lancia 83.... So some misinformation there.
Thanks for giving us what Motor Trend took away.. Hagerty Is The VIP
That orange monster is one of a kind gold. Wow.
I have a soft spot for old Audi's.
But I saw that.
And it was not soft.
Ryan is the next big car host.
Amazing car, cinematography, music, narration, this is prime time TV quality
Thank you!
Well done Ryan and Haggerty! We did an all encompassing documentary film/review on the 4.2 V8 last year, and this is a phenomenal video. You all are killing it right now! 💪
Thank you!
Now that's how you ski, baby!! Neon all the way, hittin the bumps, bindings break-a-leg tight, no parabolic nothing. Do it, man -- RAD!!!! Love it.
Haha, I worked really hard acquiring all the stuff to make it look like the skiing I grew up with! Thanks!
I'm fixing up an 86 audi 5000 cd turbo quattro right now, these old audis are fantastic fun.
Can't believe this is the last of this series! We want more, more, MORE! Great content, could watch one of these every day, let alone every week!
What series
@@Fee.1 There's four episodes of RadVentures on Hagerty.
My first memory of the Quattro was that of Michele Mouton winning the Acropolis Rally. I was a little kid. Excellent.
Thumbs up for old Audis I5 2.2 Turbo Quattro
@@noidontthinksolol white one has 2.2 I5
We need a playlist of the soundtrack for this series. I love all of this so much
There's actually the start of one on Spotify, but I haven't finished it yet.
@@RyanSymancek That's all I needed to hear, thank you
What a video! As an owner of various classic Audis I was surprised to see the 4000 getting love from Hagerty! One small little nitpick, Audi had the engines that far forward for years in the 70s with everything fwd. It wasn't the quattro that made them put it forward, it was like that all along. The 5 cyl just stuck out more than the 4s they mainly used previously.
Hmm yeah that's interesting. I've never seen a FWD 4000, but that makes sense that the axles would be in a similar location therefore not chaining motor location much.
Just look at a GT coupe, or B1
They more or less just added a center diff to the fwd gearbox and keept everthing else in the same location.
I got a serious case of nostalgia watching the opening. My first car was an '86 4000 quattro. Loved it. Miss it. Take care of that little car, Ryan.
Its in good hands! It's not my car, but it's a close friend and it's well looked after. It will stay a stock example.
Doing some rallying, showing the engine and then honoring Mikkola made me give this a thumbs up. Nice car.
Mikkola was a legend!
Walter Röhrl. The GOAT of Rally Driving. Whenever i see a Quattro, i think of Walter and his driving skills in the 80s..legends. Both:)
This whole video was my freshman year going to College in Vermont from Connecticut...
on my Neon 208cm Kastle Super G's
weekend rips on Vermont back roads.
My buddy had the Quattro, I had the Civic Si with snow tires only on the front tires
(bad idea folks, 360 on the highway after a wind gust blew out my rear end)
Ah my knees hurt just watching him skiing.
Spectacular series! Greetings from Greece for that amazing audi to mr Mantopoulos! A very nice feeling to see a greek american guy in that series!
I would pay for this show. We need a full season.
Absolute bro move that the owner let his car get driven hard and filmed. That way the rest of of us can watch in amazement. That V8 brings the power up to where it needs to be. The 4000/80 quattro has legend status.
I loved watching rally races. They reminded me of racing on my ol' country roads. I learned about dirt tracking and handling in a pickup truck and a VW bug. So much fun running full out on those roads and learning the way to keep it on the road. Some roads were dirt roads and the others were gravel roads. Best fun i ever had on a country road:)
You only truly understand the magic of that drivetrain if you drive them. Hands down the most fun AWD car I have ever driven. The locking diffs just make it perfect to flick and put the power down!
Loved to see that green plate on the back! I am from Colchester, went to HS with Julie Buffum, John's daughter, the guy responsible for bringing Rally Car to the US... GREAT STUFF! GAS GAS GAS!
Those people which work at Hagerty are the REAL petrolheads and automotive addicted, that's why we love this channel.
My life as a rallyist can ski, great vid.
Am gona buy one of these soon..👏💯💪👏👏
This 4000 is my favorite. I had one like this 😍😍😍
This is the definition of inspired. Didnt even realize this is a "corporate" Hagerty video. Just so good.
I didn’t know this guy was from Maine. I am too
Watching all these Hagerty videos is confirming that i need a big garage with so many cool cars.
Was all the driving done by Ryan? He is a really good driver! And also, whats that at about 3:30??? PEUGEOT?? You Americans really can't pronounce European car names 😂 But anyways, awesome video and great content, Ryan is awesome!
Yeah that's me driving! This thing was an absolute dream to drive. Super well setup... actually the rear was too soft, but they're working on that. But everything else was solid and the tires we brand new soft compounds. So it directed well and was super predictable.
The cornering was great and the entrances to cornera were inch perfect. I enjoy all your videos, thank you!
Ryan puts up automotive gold products!!! Thanks bro!
Greetings from Latvia
I loved My life as a Rallyist and this is right up there! You are an inspiration
Thanks!
Glad you're back Ryan. I LOVE "My Life as a Rallyist" and am stoked to see this.
Thanks Matt! Glad to get some stuff back out there.
Well done Ryan, very enjoyable film.
Thank you!
We did not have Audi 4000s in Latvia, but we did have the basically identical Audi 90 (b2) and so did my father for 8 years from when i was 6 years old. Oh how i loved that 2.2 5cylinder, that sound and my father liked driving it dynamicly. You can probably imagine my 6 year old little self hyping about the car .
Truly a great car this is!
My first Audi was a 1986 coupe gt and my dad had the 4000 both fwd. Then I went to the 1991 V8 3.6, 2001 A6 V8 4.2, 2008 A6 V8 and currently have a 455hp S4 and S5 sportback.
That V8 Audi 80 is friggin' awesome.
Old audis just went up in value, great video
I wanted one of those but could only find the base model front driver with the 1.8 liter four. But I had an '87 VW GLi at the same time with essentially the same motor (102 hp 2-valve motor). The VW felt a lot quicker than the Audi but the Audi was more comfortable. Both were pretty good snow cars.
Earlier VW's are great snow cars with the right tire!
Great video, thank u Hagerty and other contributing sources.
Almost spit when he said v8! Lol
Had this exact car in 98 except grey leather. Can't believe it was only 100 hp. Lots of torque.
Actually...they had 115hp !
@@constantinem7290 that sound brought me back. My first one was totalled and I looked around to see what was comparible and found nothing so I bought another one.
Yeah Constantine is right here, the 4000CS had 115 but this one is probably is a little worn. So I'd like to see what it puts out at the wheels this stage in its life.
Great video. I worked at a local Porsche/Audi store in the Boston area in the mid 80s and loved driving all of the Quattros - 4000, 5000 and Coupe. I was an avid New England skier, and I must admit I wore a jacket not dissimilar to Ryan's while hitting the slopes at Loon, Waterville Valley, Cannon and Mr. Snow. Fast forward 20 years and I found myself on the West Coast co-driving a wild Ur Quattro in a few local SCCA Pro Rally events and driving a modern A4 Quattro in some road races, including one through the streets of Los Angeles.
Thank you for honouring Hannu Mikkola 🇫🇮!
Of course!
Wow this film, the ski pass looks soo great!!
What a great show!
Great to see a Ryan in a video, love his presenting.
Thanks!
Good to see you back on youtube again.
I had an 87. For the time it went as fast as most other cars. Never had a problem with the engine. It sure was a fun car. 👍😉
Oddly enough i fell in love with audi and rallying because i loved mountain biking and imitating the stuff i saw in old group b clips
Another car from Latvia is in the game!
Greetings from Latvia guys!
Man the first blip of that 4.2 v8 took me immediately back to my tuned B6 S4. Never should have sold it and I will have another one. What a sound
Great show! Loving this series.
Great work,thank u👍....
Man di u bring memories, the first tine I ever saw an audi was in 1980 and it was a hatch back quatro coloured red, I was 15 it was a hot summer afternoon in the eastern part of Saudi Arabia,,,it's like it's only yesterday.
Thanks.
Lucky guy, and good skier... my brothers and me had numerous Audi's this is a great expose and so glad to finally see V8 in rally fatigues...
They're great cars, and under appreciated here. Thanks!
Ryan seems like a real chill dude, really likable! Keep it up!
This was fun to watch. The 4000CS was dope and then the V8 80, OMG!! Great job!
Thanks for this, well done!
Awesome! I grew up in Latvia and I've definitely seen a few of these around. Minus the v8 of course 😆
Just saw this vid today. My dad had an ‘85 4000 S quattro - which then became my 1st car. I loved that car. The engine was really torquey. I lived in a rural area. You could let the clutch out (slowly) and the car would drive UPHILL on idle. Great car and I’m glad to see one in such good condition still.
Been really loving this RadVentures series. Ryan's a great host and I love the content!
Thank you!
Quattro drive on snow is like a drug.
I really can see the passion!!
Wow, brings me back to the days... Audi and ski moguls ... sweet
Really well done dexter rutecki! No seriously great video.
So far i really love that series.
The cars are great, music and pictures are absolutely spot on and i cant imagine anyone more fitting to present it than Ryan.
This isnt just car based entertainment as we've seen it hundrets of times allready.
Its an astonishing composition for the souls of car enthusiasts.
Thank you.
Wow this is an amazing comment to get, thank you!
I had a VW Quantum Wagon Syncro. It had an Audi drive train, 5 Cylinder 5 Speed.
That car would go through anything. It was amazing.
Oh my gosh, don't let it end! I loved this series and want more. I laughed, I cried, and reminisced. Can't wait to see what's next :)
Best video i've seen in a long time, and the others werent bad. Amazing.
I passed up the opportunity to own an audi 80 2.8l and its been my greatest regret in life by 1000000miles 😭😭😭 love your content!!
Rallying and skiing, can't think of a better combo
I think so :)
this whole series is so brilliant and funny. well done!
Back in 1980, just turned 30, I landed a job that had me driving across Canada, from Toronto to Vancouver, visiting musical instrument dealers as a factory rep for a European manufacturer. I'd be stopping in a lot of small towns and had a lot of marketing stuff to carry so it made sense to drive. I was already a confirmed motorhead and got to pick my car: a 1979 Audi 5000 with five-speed. Bigger than the 4000 model featured in this vid, the 5000 was a luxury sedan and an autobahn stormer. Its SOHC 5-cylinder powered the front wheels only, and acceleration was nothing special. But the car was feather-light for a big sedan and it would cruise effortlessly at 90. I got a radar detector installed in the grill with warning light/buzzer and controls concealed under the dash. Highway 1 traverses the vast prairies of Manitoba and Saskatchewan,, and at night it's pretty quiet between cities. I'd let that big Audi run free and savor the experience of seeing stars everywhere -- out the windshield, the side windows, the rear window, even the mirrors. It was like piloting a starship, and I was secure knowing the Audi would get me safely and quickly to my destination.
That 90 quattro is the one for me! Great channel and content.
well done man, another awesome film
Having grown up in Colorado in the 70s and 80s I remember these Quattros like no other car. Especially the pearl white one. Heaven it was.
I thought I missed the Dirt before......
Now? Im headed to the paddock to scout out a new build
Damn you Ryan lol
going out with a bang!! Love the new content Hagerty!
this is one of my favorite videos ive ever seen
Wow that was so awesome
Great car, great engine, awesome no compromise driving! That car take a beating!
Great content. I know what Hagerty really is but the UA-cam content is what I enjoy watching. I'll have more please.
Miss my 4000 cs Quattro. That was a solid ride
As a kid I had a white and yellow toy. I made 5 cylinder noises while driving it over the couch, in the mud outside and on the dinner table. I thought women rally drivers were normal. The quattro was my childhoods hero car. Still can't get enough of that sound
I remember the smell from those cars. Eighties Audis have a special smell inside them, and I love it
Amazing, thanks for this.
This is my new favorite build, this thing kicks ass!
Great video! I love this kind of content and can't get enough of it.
This is soooo good! Great stuff, Ryan and Aris!!
Thanks buddy!
