Everyone should check out Tony Northrup's iPhone 16 Pro Max review of the misleading marketing Apple has done on the 48 megapixel cameras which are actually 6 megapixels (not 48) when compared to a real camera lens. He shows comparison pictures and the difference is horrifyingly bad for the iPhone.
With Tony or any other person sharing his/her opinions, one has to ask the question "Cui bono?", in English "to whom is it a benefit?" to ask how Tony (in that example) benefits from that.
I am getting the 16 pro max with 1TB to replace my 9 year old Samsung 7 edge. Will use it to get into tighter spaces where my tripod mounted 4K camera just won't work.
Two things. Make that camera sensor 1 inch with 48 megapixels f 1.2 for all lenses- Tele, Wide and Ultra wide. Also leave a separate sensor area adjacent to the existing lenses which can be used for magnetically attaching an apple designed lens (much bigger aperture and like 50mm focal length). There it is- my patent. Apple, feel free to copy it. I wont sue you. 😅

It's true that there isn't much difference compared to the iPhone 15, but I think it's worth waiting for the iPhone 16 Pro Max and switching. Just for the 4K at 120 frames per second, it's worth it-plus, let's not forget that all of this is in HDR, and the video quality we know from Apple is top-notch. The differences may be minimal, but they're worth it.
Theres so little info on that new ultrawide 48 mega pixel camera. I really want to see how much more light hits that sensor and much better low light performance that lens gets first. 4K 120 is cool though.
I am upgrading and so are 4 other people who are shooting episodes for a reality tv show on Circle Network. I will be using the phones to their fullest potential. We travel all over the world and a short window to film so here we go!! I will be going down to 1 C70 for mics to attach until we figure out if the new mics on the phone will work. Sounds crazy but we are going for it. If we have the right lighting, I think we will love the ease of grabbing our iPhones and to simply start filming. Especially with the new stability sensors. The only thing I can’t stand is the over sharpening and the relentless green dot. Hopefully LOG will calm the sharpness and if anyone out there has tricks for the green dot please let me know!!
Isn’t it crazy that smartphones use computational photography and videography to create photos and videos and the creatives/users have to use computers to basically „undo“ those computational photography/videography to achieve what they wanted to get in the first place?
They put the Macbook touch bar on the side of an iPhone. I'm still using my 13 pro and it's fine, this still hasn't enticed me yet to upgrade...I've broken the upgrade cycle and it's nice.
Still, 4k 30fps for cinematic mode and spatial video still limited to 1080 30p are mind-boggling. I was hoping for 8K recording so we could reframe on a 4K timeline. I'll upgrade, but it sucks because I know I will do it again next year when we finally get 8K.
A content creator uses a iPhone 8 Plus 256 GB and thinks about buying the new iPhone 16 Pro Max with 256 GB or 512 GB. I asked him: Have you researched the video recording quality and features of other High End Smartphones like Google Pixel 9 Pro XL or Samsung S24 Ultra or Oneplus 12 Pro or … ????? He looks at me, thinks about it and says: „No, because rarely someone talks about it in Reviews, UA-cam, Reddit, Forums etc. - it‘s just the myth, that Apple is best in videography“. I couldn’t believe it, so we tool some time and searched for the answers and yes, it‘s really hard to find. It‘s like a big puzzle, where one finds some real world examples from practice in some comments, some UA-cam videos, some stories about (short) movies or Tv documentaries shot with smartphones.
I'm certainly looking into getting one because I can't afford an FX30 with the extra lenses. Coming from absolute zero is never considered, but that's the situation rn. The compromises can be dealt with later, right now I just need something good enough to get me to the door. No point overthinking or hesitating, neither of those get the job done.
And you learn so much more, if your equipment is not doing everything you want or doing it other than you want. The most creative works have been created with basic tools or tools used „wrongly“ to realise ideas from the minds of those creative people.
If you want to shoot a film, you might also want to check the real camera, as the depth of field and lens choice might add up much more. It is a great second camera though, add a phone look or maybe a 8mm look to some part of your narrative if that’s what you want.
Honestly, I was underwhelmed. There are some interesting things I'd like to play with down the road, but I'll do that hopefully when a 17 Pro gives me cinematic mode with log profiles. Pretty please, Apple?
3:48 I can clearly see low budget film, Diy's and even some regular folks will enjoy the quality of the iPhone cameras. The slow motion effects and all the presets preview capability will be luring for many people. 4:28 The mere fact that you can swiftly access the camera app in seconds, and to be able to delve into key camera features to capture kool content is amazing. 4:30 The camera control button is amazing. The learning curve will come in the right time, with just some effort and patience.
Man, coming from someone that still has the 13, it really sucks that this version of the iPhone really feels disappointing. Like I bought the 13 cause of the cinematic mode, then the 15 brought USB-C & Prores log. I feel like apple needs to stop doing these yearly & wait a few years for a new iPhone to drop. I remember as a kid the iPhone was so cool in terms of games & camera quality. Now its just more of a reason to invest in other areas & either go back to android or a flip phone lmaoo
Or, you could just *not* contemplate buying a new phone every year :) Just because they *make* a phone every year, doesn’t mean that’s so people should upgrade every year - what it does mean is that those who *need* to upgrade, from maybe a 3 or 4 year old phone, will have access to the freshest tech :) This new version is great for those who, right now, need a new phone :)
@@RIVAS2004 :D Almost same for me, started my youtube channel with an iPhone X late last year, then came ios 17 and blackmagic camera app didn’t work on ios 16, and the iPhone X couldn’t get ios 17, so got a 15 pro max that I’ll probably use for at least 4-5 years - and *then* the next iphone will be worth upgrading to ;)

I think the camera control button is a neat feature. Not sure if I would ever find a use for the 4k120. If I was making lots of content, I'd seriously consider upgrading. But I'm not, so I'm staying put with my 15 Pro Max. The other thing to consider is how important Apple Intelligence is for you. Most of AI won't apply to filmmakers, but being able to search the photos app for specific video moments is almost like having an assistant editor pulling clips for you. I think that would be very, very cool, especially if you are doing a complete workflow on your phone. (I know it'll work on M1+ Macs and iPads as well.)
Yeah the Apple Intelligence is interesting, I didn’t mention that in the video because of the photo/filmmaking aspect, but that is obviously one reason to consider it too. Not sure when that will release though, they say later this fall.
48 mp kinda seems good if you want ultra wide video i really never shot in anything other then the standard camera for video just becaues there wasnt enough quality on it

Supposedly better heat dissipation. I will be interested in seeing if this actually is so since heat is a problem sometimes with my 15 Pro Max. Also am interested in if the 48 megapixel sensor actually gives noticeably better images or is just a paper bump.
The main sensor is still not 1” but it is a little larger than 15 Pro. Te ultra wide is still a much smaller sensor, apparently the same size as before so not sure how they get more light.

If you're using your phone for a LOT of creative work, go with the external drive (I mean, go ahead and get lots of storage too...). If nothing else, saving those massive video files to an SSD will make moving stuff to your PC a lot quicker.

Yes. I’m mainly talking about smaller brands especially like Beastgrip, etc. that often take three to sometimes six months to get a new cage out, then have to change it all over again.
Good question. I’m not sure since it’s supposedly powered by their new “Fusion” camera, so it’s possible that internal recording might be limited to the main 24mm Fusion camera. But then perhaps using an external SSD you could use any camera? We’ll see… I’ll test that out soon!
I’ve heard a few people mention that, and so probably. But I don’t think they’ll be leaping to 8K anytime soon. Most professional cinema cameras stick to 6K, that way when you master in 4K you’ve got room to reframe or stabilize etc.

In regards to video and photo it was a huge leap. Night and day actually on how much better that new sensor was at the time and not to mention the sensor-shift stabilization they added.

This "upgrade" is all incremental. This is how it will be as globalization is done, as we have known it for the last 70 years in done. Please don't listen to me, but DO listen to Peter Zeihan (here on UA-cam as a geo-political strategist). I will be staying with my 15 Por Max). This is likely all Apple could get from India based on the necessary production timeframe. Note, too, that the likes of cages from Beastgrip et al will be delayed (i.e., they are always SIX months or so late in delivery for a new iPhone model) due to the same "supply-chain reasons).

Haven’t seen it and I don’t have the phone yet either to test, but I’ve shot some amazing photos with my 14 and 15 Pro Max using the 48MP camera.

I waited a year till the 15 Pro Max price went down to upgrade from my 12 pro max. Now I’m very happy and should be for the next 3-5 years

Vivo x100 ultra from last year already had 8k /30 - Apple did well in this event but I see this more as a slight upgrade

I'm going to buy, it's my first approach to filming, I'm going to film my first short film at the end of the year. I hope it meets my expectations 😁

Currently on 13 pro max, and I use an 11pro max as secondary camera 2. I will be looking at upgrading to a 15 not a 16 at this point.

If you shoot a lot of video the USB-C and Apple log are well worth it.

They should have kept the 3x optical lens on the Pro. 1.1x to 4.9x digital zoom is too wide a focal range to digitally zoom.
The 5X is optical as well, unless I’m misunderstanding you. But yeah the 3X is a nice in between range

Yes, significant upgrade and you will be especially happier shooting in low light now along with USB-C and Apple log.

Yeah heat is a big one for all iPhones, they definitely have gotten better but you really just can’t shoot outside during the summer for very long.

Don’t have one to know yet, but it is a new sensor and so it should perform better. I’ll be doing a bunch of tests in the coming weeks.

You don’t have to be reach to upgrade to the 16- all carriers are doing no cost swaps to the 16

Yes. I’m mainly talking about smaller brands especially like Beastgrip, etc. that often take three to sometimes six months to get a new cage out, then have to change it all over again.
Can you do 4k 120 on all lenses?
Good question. I’m not sure since it’s supposedly powered by their new “Fusion” camera, so it’s possible that internal recording might be limited to the main 24mm Fusion camera. But then perhaps using an external SSD you could use any camera? We’ll see… I’ll test that out soon!
If iPhone 16 pro max can shoot 4K120, why not 8K? Isn’t that’s kinda the same processing power?
I’ve heard a few people mention that, and so probably. But I don’t think they’ll be leaping to 8K anytime soon. Most professional cinema cameras stick to 6K, that way when you master in 4K you’ve got room to reframe or stabilize etc.
So i have a 14 pro max i use my phone to shoot video content and do VFX.
I would suggest an upgrade for that work. Apple log alone will really help out.

naaa I almost pre ordered and glad I am investing in myself with that money rather than buying the same thing to impress those who don't matter to me at all. Covid did not teach people anything I guess.
I have an 11, and I don't feel that I have to upgrade.
If you shoot video or photos a lot then it would be a significant upgrade. Even the 12 was a giant leap.

In regards to video and photo it was a huge leap. Night and day actually on how much better that new sensor was at the time and not to mention the sensor-shift stabilization they added.

I will be staying with my 15 Por Max). This is likely all Apple could get from India based on the necessary production timeframe. Note, too, that the likes of cages from Beastgrip et al will be delayed (i.e., they are always SIX months or so late in delivery for a new iPhone model) due to the same "supply-chain reasons).
