Great work! I have already tried these tests with my 3900x and 3070. I knew it was codecs but didn't knw abt the exact codec differences..Red raw and blackmagic are tge smoothest. Canon raw crashes both my premiere and resolve. Blackmagic red videos are playing good but you cant edit it in full or half resolution especially if you do effects or color works. Thank you

Hi I'm sorry if I'm a little late to this vid but nvidias new rtx a series like a4000 a5000 and a6000 has hardware acceleration for h.265 (hevc). I'm in the middle of building a pc to handle me maxing out the video files in my a7s3 and I choose the a4000 with a 5950x and 64gb of ddr4. Should be able to play it back and render exceptionally.

I just purchased a M2 Mac mini 16GB. What I find strange is any mp4 (h.264) footage I add to the timeline it is a breeze to edit. scrubs through it no problem in 1/1 Quality. For a test I encoded some mp4s to Apple proRes HQ 422 in Adobe media Encoder. When I add these .mxf files to my timeline and try and scrub through them, to my surprise it is really slow and glitchy compared with the original MP4 files. Any idea why this would be? Thanks.

Thanks for this well explained video. I am filming everything straight onto my PC with OBS via a capture card (Elgato Cam Link 4K). This is luckily keeping everything 4.2.0. I see my GPU is pushing hard against the 100% level when I scrub my playhead back and forth. Given the choppiness and 'Not Responding' I am always seeing in Premiere, which is why I'm watching videos like this, I now think I need a better GPU. I have a Core i7 8700K 3.7Ghz with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti GPU. Do you think this GPU is still good in 2023 or should I upgrade?

Gpu doesnt make difference in video editing. You will regret if you make this change. Try to increase number of cores of your processor instead.

That is why the R5 files play so tough on even most powerful computer because it is h265 10 bit 4:2:2. Whereas like s1h use h265 10 bit 4:2:0 and I believe a7s3 can also choose this codec.

I can't get GPU decoding accel working... Seems like the feature is broken in Premiere with Nvidia GPUS. Performance is the same with the feature turned off or on. LAGGY. My CPU utilisation is high. Video decode stays at 0%. This is currently a broken feature in Premiere. People with M1 macbooks have smoother timelines than me when my rig is far more powerful.

Lol PAL folks got screwed hard for no good reason! Just shoot 24p everything :P I like 24p because it saves space and if I create some magestic level content that needs a PAL 25p conversion it isn't rocket science. I do find it interesting that years and years of PAL land guys talking about how PAL is superior and now suddenly they are silent about the topic while they shoot 1080p and 4K 60/120fps content :P
I experimented with PAL because I found the 48fps usage that was suddent from The Hobbit interesting and 50fps is close enough to 48 without losing too much. I might try it again, I just love how their is no drop frame variant like 29.97 for 30, 59.94 for 60 and unfortunately for 24p 23.98fps although conversion between true 24p and 23.98 is easy IMO.
