I’ve been a published automotive journalist since 1997, and remember testing the Dakota R/T when it was new. Also drove the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the same 5.9L V8, and loved both vehicles. The Hellcat stuff is cool and fast, but these old trucks were fun at a much more affordable price!
Funny, I figured Tyler for exactly the guy that would slap 20's on his truck in high school. I feel like we have very similar taste in cars. I had an old black Buick Riviera with a 5.7L V8, red vinyl interior and flames painted on it in high school. I would drive it today if I still had it, those cushy bucket seats, cloud like ride, and pinky finger light steering meant it was the most cushy, leisurely driving car I had ever owned, and I've owned a Cadillac DeVille. But for the guy putting bus seats in his Ferrari, the 20's off a Dodge Ram is not a stretch.
The Wizard said in a video on his channel that the 5.9 was no good because the heads all crack. And that's true; pretty much every set of heads on these is cracked. But the metal is so thick that it basically never causes issues. Probably every 200k+ mile Magnum V8 has had cracked heads since it was still in warranty, and no one notices until they pull the heads as part of an engine build.
I bought one new in 98 .. it broke a leaf spring on the freeway and the insurance company totaled it.. they said the truck was stated to have an over rated tow capacity and that several people towing trailers had lost horses and people had died as a result. I was so pissed off because i loved that truck. Mine was an extended cab with the red lettering. I had hella custom mods done to it .. but they paid me out.
Btw , they look hella good slammed with dual hood scoops and a bed cover.. which mine had .. these trucks handled so good and they were pretty fast for the power to weight ratio
INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! I was shopping for a decent specimen of this for a DD....Seems you nailed it...Not an easy task!!! I wouldn't have the nerve to use that one either. Absolute Awesomeness!!! Thanks for sharing with us.
Having owned (bought new) a 2000 Dakota Sport 4.7, 5-speed stick. It was an absolute blast to drive, great memories! To this day I still regret selling it 7 years ago.
I still have mine. 02 Quad Cab SLT, but it’s an auto with the 4.7, it’s my weekend tow vehicle and the interior is still like new. Just had to fix the rust in the rear wheels wells, other then that still going strong with 120k on it.
4.7 manual 2WD Dakota was probably the most fun truck to drive ever made. However with the 4.7 you do have to keep up on your fluids like it's a Ferrari; they do NOT tolerate deferred maintenance at all. The 5.9 is s bit if a tractor in stock form, but it can be modified endlessly and it doesn't mind if there are a few pounds of spiders in the oil.
I have 2000 Darkota RT cc flame red in nice original condition , 107,000 miles.Never winter driven.I'm the second owner.Owned since 2001.I really like mine.
In 1995 my dad bought an Dakota extended cab with an optional 5.9l v8 and the engine was so big that it rubbed on the hood liner! Man that thing could lay rubber!!!
@@Obsidian319 That sucks...besides the bolt pattern, I forgot Viper rear wheels are a near foot wide, the spacers would be complex to make and stress the axles.
I had a 2002 black extended cab R/T as my first vehicle . Bought it used with 20k miles and I drove it until I unfortunately wrecked it with 106k miles on it. I really miss that truck and the how fun it was to drive. Definately one of the most under appreciated vehicles Dodge ever built.
I have one of these a crew cab in intense blue pearl. They're so obscure and performance parts can be hard to find and can be a pain, but I absolutely love it.
As a senior in high school I lusted over this truck. A friend and I went to the local dealership to check it out in person and we were offered a test drive. When we got back the salesman met us outside and said “if you’re going to buy the truck you better say so now, because I’m about to ban you from this dealership for life”. I managed to look shocked and asked why...he said you’ve been gone for 5 minutes and we’ve had 3 calls. We left without saying another word. I feel bad now, but it was a 5.9 with a manual transmission, the first donut was accidental...and every one after was just because I was 18.
My first new truck was an 04 Dakota SLT (the last year of this body style) club cab with the 4.7. It took me all over the country from age 20 to 30. It will always have a special place in my heart. The most attached I’ve ever been to a vehicle yet. Oh yeah it had a name too. Silver Dodge - Super creative I know

You should install a bedrug custom fit liner and a painted cover on the bed, it would really set it off and make the bed usable without destroying it like other bedliners.

Hoovie - I’m having trouble finding these tires, it’s difficult to get tires like this these days Also hoovie - Watch me roast these suckers by doing burnouts
Honestly the best use for 20 year old tires. They're too hardened for normal driving, and will weather crack to hell soon anyway (if they haven't already).
I have never forgotten about these.. I've always wanted one, and I think it's one of the best looking trucks made.. I love it, and I hope it stays immaculate to be seen by others in the future. AWESOME truck!!! Nothing like that big torquey 360 and its noise!
I love 5.9 R/Ts. Being a Durango driver, I naturally like the Durango version a little more, but that one had the full time transfer case like a Jeep, so not much for burnouts. The R/T had a different cam, intake, and exhaust, and they rev a lot freer than a 5.9 like I have. There was also a Grand Cherokee with the 5.9 for one year. Fastest Jeep ever made at the time, only beat by the SRT8. Paper horsepower means very little with these. They have a ton of torque, and a wide powerband. And that makes all the difference. I would take the wheels and tires off and store them. Especially if the size is hard to find. I'm sure a similar enough wheel and tire combo can be found that would allow for more options. Well done Hoovie!
I am the original owner of a 2001 Dak R/T. From time to time I look online to see what a well kept one like mine sells for. I recall seeing this one for sale online before Hoovie bought it. It was the finest low mileage, unmolested R/T I had seen in years. It had quite a price on it, can't remember now what that price was. Wish I could have bought it.
You're awesome Hoovie, love your videos, keep on doing what you do. Love seeing the unique quirky stuff, even your super-cars are unique. Have a great day!
That is a damn nice Dakota, coming from a dealer! I would definitely bedline that not the rubber stuff but the actual good hard liner. If I was hoovies I would keep it up to 50,000 miles and then resell it and you would still make your money back! I'm a dealer in Texas and there is no hope for any Dakota out here in Texas, they have all been beat to crap. That is an exemplary find! The only way I can sell Dakota's are if I lift them and put big all-terrain tires on them. For the pure nostalgia of it this makes me jealous.
The hoovie's garage formula: step 1: buy forgotten rare vehicle step 2: make youtube video about vehicle to garner interest in vehicle, thereby increasing market value step 3: sell for profit step 4: repeat
You could be correct, i reckon Hoovie is a classic car dealer, tells folk he's paid more for a rare(ish) car (say $8,000) when actually it's $7,000 spend $1,500 on parts and labour, keep for a while do a few videos saying "how forgotten and cheap it is" then 1 year later sell it on on cars & bids and get about $11,000.

"Trillions of dollars in tax revenue" based on what? It cost 2.77 billion (billion is less than trillion, btw.)
I never thought Tyler Hoover would be the type of guy to slap some 20’s on a truck but he never ceases to amaze
In fairness, they looked good on there from what i could see in the picture...
"I'm actually having a hard time finding replacement tires for this"

Federal makes 255/55/17 tires for this, like $90 each, great tire honestly.
Federal 595 can find online for 80 bucks a piece
They aren't safe after 21 years burn them up and buy a new set
I had a 2002 R/T EX CAB when I was 18 ,loved that truck, got it with 5500 miles ,fun truck
Can't wait to see the Wizards reaction to this truck!
And Ninjas 🥷
The Wizard said in a video on his channel that the 5.9 was no good because the heads all crack. And that's true; pretty much every set of heads on these is cracked. But the metal is so thick that it basically never causes issues. Probably every 200k+ mile Magnum V8 has had cracked heads since it was still in warranty, and no one notices until they pull the heads as part of an engine build.
@@JETZcorp And the fact that it almost never causes problems is the reason that the Wizard has a 1500 with the 5.9 in it...
We had a Dakota with the V6. Rear wheel drive and endless burnouts. I can't imagine how much fun the V8 would be.
You can do a standing burnout literally all day with these trucks. He’s not exaggerating that it’s the greatest burnout machine ever built
Last time I was this early, Hoovie's Mercedes was stolen and ditched in the woods
Now that’s a time capsule haha

I have one modded a 2000 rt you want to buy
I'll look forward to this being posted 3 times a day for the next month on every dakota group I'm in 😂
Having owned (bought new) a 2000 Dakota Sport 4.7, 5-speed stick. It was an absolute blast to drive, great memories! To this day I still regret selling it 7 years ago.
The manual 4.7 was a faster truck than the rt. I bet it was fun
I had an older Dakota Sport. Loved that ol truck. Now i have a mid 90”s F150. Heart changes. Now I love that!

I absolutely love this style/generation of Dakota. I thought it looked badass back then and still love the look.
That Dakota is a truck i would drive everyday...

It needs Viper wheels onnit!!!
@@ERICtheLATE gotta do some trimming and only can use a set of front wheels but yeah they look good.
Want to buy mine 2000 rt
If the dealership still exists, you should go and test drive a RAM TRX. Just to check if you're still banned.
If it was a manual trans it wasn't an rt, or a 5.9
@@andrewbmaster1852 truth!
You burned out a brand new truck? Daredevils! You’re lucky you never got caught.
Dakota RTs only had automatics
Had a 98 Dakota for a couple of decades and it lasted 400,000 miles. Best truck I had.
"You be crazy to drive it with 20 year old tires" as he leaves doing burn outs. lol
Yeah because why spend $800 on brand nee tires just to burn them out when you can burn out your old ones?
May as well wreck the 20 year old hard ones..

Last day of automotive school everyone does burnouts Dodge Dakota R/T was one that I remember the most
My first new truck was an 04 Dakota SLT (the last year of this body style) club cab with the 4.7. It took me all over the country from age 20 to 30. It will always have a special place in my heart. The most attached I’ve ever been to a vehicle yet. Oh yeah it had a name too. Silver Dodge - Super creative I know
It's too early for April Fools. This isn't a dumbest car video.
I don't know. He's looking for a daily beater, he can haul stuff in, and ends up with a museum piece he can't use without ruining it. Still pretty dumb in my book. 😄

This is great. Glad you like your R/T. I am the original owner of a 2000 Extended Cab R/T, also black. 18K on it. Was only driven in any rain maybe 2 times. Love mine too!
Getting cars like this is why I like you Hoovie! Well done.
I had a 98 dakota sport as my first truck, it makes me so happy to see your love for them like mine
Man great to see this. Motor doesn’t miss a beat everything is factory paint is just oxidizing a bit. Love the truck can’t wait to get home and drive it
I'm glad you finally found one! That thing is cool as hell
You should install a bedrug custom fit liner and a painted cover on the bed, it would really set it off and make the bed usable without destroying it like other bedliners.
Definitely agree. In my pristine 03’ Ranger I kept a fitted carpet remnant and color matched white tonneau cover. That thing was showroom worthy.
There is NO substitute for a Bedrug in your truck! My '04 Z-71's bed is still pristine after all these years!
Reminds me of the night I bought my brand new '99 R/T. Beautiful red with dark charcoal interior. Her name was Vivian and I miss her.
Mine was that solar yellow
when I was watching this, I thought you were going to send it to the Wizard's shop and tell him over the phone to inspect a really old truck. It would have made a great April Fools joke.

Honestly the best use for 20 year old tires. They're too hardened for normal driving, and will weather crack to hell soon anyway (if they haven't already).
Yesssss thank you Hoovie! I’m sick of the Ford Ranger talk, let’s show some people a real truck
I hate to quote Indiana Jones, but.... “It belongs in a museum!”
I have never forgotten about these.. I've always wanted one, and I think it's one of the best looking trucks made.. I love it, and I hope it stays immaculate to be seen by others in the future. AWESOME truck!!! Nothing like that big torquey 360 and its noise!

Your skills at presenting and gathering information are always getting better and better. You are an excellent host!
I'm jealous Tyler! That's just a flat out sweet ride. Keep it for your daughter! That's what I"d do.
As a 2001 Durango driver I appreciate this
The previous owner watching this was probably having a stroke when Hoovie was pulling hole shots.

Oh man, a Dakota R/T. Freaking love these trucks. What a find!
Looking at the pictures of young Hoovie, I'm now convinced that he's a vampire
I am the original owner of a 2001 Dak R/T. From time to time I look online to see what a well kept one like mine sells for. I recall seeing this one for sale online before Hoovie bought it. It was the finest low mileage, unmolested R/T I had seen in years. It had quite a price on it, can't remember now what that price was. Wish I could have bought it.
You're awesome Hoovie, love your videos, keep on doing what you do. Love seeing the unique quirky stuff, even your super-cars are unique. Have a great day!
This and same era Durango's are just awesome!
This is good news. Original owner of a '01 CC R/T. I've heard there were less than 300 made in my configuration, something like 1600 total in 2001.
The hoovie's garage formula:
step 1: buy forgotten rare vehicle
step 2: make youtube video about vehicle to garner interest in vehicle, thereby increasing market value
step 3: sell for profit
step 4: repeat
You could be correct, i reckon Hoovie is a classic car dealer, tells folk he's paid more for a rare(ish) car (say $8,000) when actually it's $7,000 spend $1,500 on parts and labour, keep for a while do a few videos saying "how forgotten and cheap it is" then 1 year later sell it on on cars & bids and get about $11,000.
And it Sold at barret jackson today for $27500 lol
