Literally the comment I was just about to post. I'm like 20 mins in and literally hit me. I don't think anyone can top the amount of detail he packs into the stories and can keep you hooked as long as he does. Favorite gaming channel on YT hands down.
Because you're not allergic to sports games, and most youtubers are, it's pretty fresh and interesting to hear commentary on sports games that isn't dismissive or shallow. Quackshot was one of the better games my family rented for the Genesis back in the day. I liked what I played but there was a seemingly endless room in the haunted house that I couldn't figure out before the game had to go back to the rental store. Getting stuck there soured my opinion a bit, and we never bought it. I've seen videos within the last few years of what I had to do. I wonder if I would have figured it out if I had the game longer.
Personal nostalgia is a strong impulse. Most of us when we were kids... when you got a game, they were like your children. You couldn't return it... and if it was crap, you never crapped on it... you sold it in the best way you could because one day, you might want to trade it for anything better. Also... when you got a new game, it might be the only new game you'd have to play for months on end... so you'd give this game so many passes and push through the frustrations because it was your only option. I think when you do this, you can find ways to appreciate things in a way nobody has time for now... when we are so quick to just "punch out" on a game because we are just drowning in options.
Had this video saved in my Watch Later list especially so I could finish work today (a Friday), crack open a beer and just listen to you chat about Genesis games, thanks for sharing dude
I laughed out loud when you said "this is gonna be a long video". Umm, yeah dude, this ain't our first rodeo on the plus!! I'd be disappointed otherwise! Great stuff as usual
Great video, as always. I love the off-the-cuff, conversational nature of the videos on CGQ+. Not many people can pull it off, but you do it really well. Thanks for making this.
Thanks for the shout-out and props on the name (and for using it)! I fell behind on your videos (thanks life) and am just starting to catch up. Made my day!
I appreciate how you go back to old usenet posts to see what people were saying about certain games at the time of release. I remember my family having some of those dried ears of corn around as decoration in the dining room. Hope to see more of these Triple Plays. I like the idea of doing it with movies and albums and stuff too.
Fantastic video. Arnold Palmer is underrated, I spent a full evening on it myself last week. I like it that much I even picked up Super Masters when I saw it for £3 before my local retro game shop shut. The Arnold Palmer name made its way to the PAL version also. Quackshot is another great game I agree that people can overlook. Land of illusion and Lucky Dime Caper on the master system aren’t as good as this or Castle of illusion but are worth trying also. Cyborg Justice I hadn’t heard of until it was mentioned on the channel years back so will finally try it. The Genesis I would add also is the console I play the most and the only retro I still buy a lot of physical games for. Love the logo of the console even whether it’s the US one or our own U.K. title the mega drive.
REPU = Rotary Engine Pick-Up. I collect Hotwheels along with video games, movies and comic books. Maybe I'll do a collection tour video on my channel one day.
The player in the background of Japan's version of Pat Riley Basketball is Hank Gathers, who collapsed and died on the court on March 4, 1990. The game was released in Japan on March 2, 1990. They talk about a Madden cover curse, but that would have been the ultimate cover curse.
Hot Shots is actually more like those PGA Tour games in regard to the swing meter and having it hook/slice when you miss the sweet spot. Love hearing the video game golf talk as always though !
New CGQ+ video? Today's gonna be a great day! Tommy LaSorda Baseball was the first Genesis game my parents bought me back in the day. Other 16-bit baseball games outdid it over the years, but I've always loved it, and still come back to it (latest game? Two weeks ago). And Quackshot is in my all-time top 10 (across all platforms and eras). Perfect plaformer, and long overdue for a re-release or remake.
The video was great. I really like the anecdotal approach on CGQ+, so I'm glad this series can be a medium for you to talk about stuff. Also, aside from the auto-focus shenanigans (I don't know as to how easy it'd be to be switching focus manually on the fly, so I can only hope the camera gods smile upon you next time), the video quality was great (as was the audio, of course). And yeah, as someone who's been playing a load of games that I missed when growing up, manuals can be a real life-saver.
Loved the talk regarding Cyborg Justice, an underrated gem for Genesis. The mechanical depth and great sound of the game made up for the repetitive backgrounds.
Dude I didn't think another human knew about quackshot... That game was so fun when I was little I don't even remember how I got it lol... Thanks Chris great blast from the past bud
Not to be a backseat driver, but as a fan I figured I'd throw out a suggestion: If you have a second camera, maybe put that in a smaller window facing down toward the desk, so whenever you want to show a car or game or whatever you can have your focus locked in and just set it on the desk to show it in the window. Anyway... keep up the great work!
As a kid in the early 90's I only had a game gear, which meant the 8 bit version of Castle of Illusion and Quackshot's simile Lucky Dime Caper. Both were excellent games in their own right considering the technical limitations!
i was born in 96, and i remember that indian corn non-sense. lol. mainly i remember being a kid and wondering why people left food sitting around their house.
Loved this, cyborg justice was my only sega genesis game for months when i was a kid, it was good for its time especially when you had a second player.
I’d just like to quickly add also about liking a game as a kid as you didn’t have many even if it was a bad game. My game is World Cup Italia 90 aka World Championship Soccer the game you mentioned. It’s pretty awful even for the time but I do love the thing as I got it with my mega drive 2 for Christmas 94 as part of Mega Games 1. The PAL one has the 1990 World Cup license which just amounts to the title screen and the name World Cup for the main mode. The music good tho.
I agree with your statements about manuals. Sometimes actions in games are not straightforward, like holding a button for a certain amount of time before pressing another to perform an action. Also, maybe it's my old man brain, but I have better recall and can more quickly access info in a physical manual, though digital is good for large manuals and keyword search.
Also... the soundtrack to Arnold Palmer could just as easily be the town music in a Phantasy Star overworld map. Now there is a game that needs to be made... a Phantasy Star themed galactic golf game.
Especially loved the Arnold Palmer portion. Does that mean that Chris doesn't like or play Neo Turfmasters? I'm kind of surprised since it's not three click
Loved the video and appreciate you takes on all three. Regarding golf games, definitely give Awesome Golf on the Lynx and Fred Couples Golf on the Game Gear a go as those are really great golf games imo. Take care and keep up the great work.
Greenlight makes a 1/64 scale 1987 Plymouth Gran Fury which is the closest thing to my first car (mine was a 1988). The thing was a complete POS, but it was clean, it was mine... and it was a couch on wheels which is what I like and miss. I've owned far better cars in my life, but I really miss this one.
If you like golf games that aren't to technical try Irem Skin game for SNES. It's a port of an arcade game that is extremely fun to play in my opinion.
Yeh I get what you mean. I was thinking of games that are widely regarded as bad but that you enjoy. For example I love Pit Fighter and I don’t get why it’s so widely 💩 upon. Except the SNES version, which is very bad.
Cyborg is good?! Does Heavy Nova need a revisit? I think you said you disliked Fatal Rewind. Fatal Rewind isn't a cyborg game, but it is a robot chicken rewind time 2D labyrinth game that I'd recommend revisiting. It does quite a lot.
There are a lot of good games with bad rep, it happens in all generations of consoles/PC games, even magazines are guilt of that. I remember reviews for games like Krusty's Super Fun House (Genesis version) and Courier Crisis (Saturn and PS1) getting bad scores and dumb comments about them, when it's clear that either the reviewer don't like the genre, visuals, or just plainly didn't learn how to properly play the game. Another example is WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game, there are moves pulled off using street fighter like commands, or holding a specific button and each character has a specific sequence for super combos, to run, you need to press both X and Square, to start a combo, you need to grab the opponent by pressing forward twice and pressing Triangle, the super combo requires pressing forward twice, Doink the Clown sequence is Triangle, Circle, X, Square, Triangle, if I'm not mistaken, you'll get 15 hits or more and it's very funny to watch, but as you see, it's not simple to pull off, once learned, though is like driving. Also, learning to do reversals, counters, special moves, etc is what makes the game stand out, otherwise, just mashing buttons won't do much. The above are just examples, there are a lot more cases like that, I also often see people dismissing Tenchu 2, saying the first is better, when it's a great sequel, with improved gameplay and visuals, more varied stages (rain, day, fog, mountains, caves, castles, open fields and ships. Many more stealth kills, the ability to drag bodies so enemies won't spot them, special items, ninja spells, poisonous darts that insta-kill enemies from afar and an extra campaign when both Rikimaru and Ayame are completed. The Japanese version is further polished in the visual and some other aspects.
I really like Arnold Palmer golf. I want to like it even more, but the ball physics are pretty bad when you're used to playing PGA tour series. The wind seems excessive in this game! But It's got so much more personality than the PGA tour games. The music is great.
I got into Golf games through this game. I'm not sure how my buddy Harry got this game, maybe it was $10 used when $10 for a used Genesis game was a phenomenal deal... Anyway, neither of us were into golf beyond mini-golf at Putt-Putt... but he got into it, then I got into it... and I ended up really loving the game. I didn't have a Genesis at the time, but I got my hands on Golf for the NES and loved that one too. I've since grown a great appreciation for "simple" (simple as in, not overly complicated) Golf games for years to come... ending on the "Hot Shot's" series of games. I think Neo Turfmasters is still my favorite... but this one I have a lot of nostalgia for.
As a kid I played so many hours of Arnold Palmer's golf . It is a great golf game especially for an early release. Edit: Hey Chris did you know about the secret fantasy zone game hidden in Arnold Palmer's golf ?
I swear there isnt a person I enjoy more listetning about some random games

Tommy Lasorda Cyborg Baseball w/ More Bacon!!!

That Mazda REPU is an acronym for “rotary engine pickup” yeah, they had a twin rotor in them.
Always a good time when there's an upload from CGQ and CGQ+. Have a great day Chris.

You are so right on the Fantasia trap. That was such a letdown after Castle of Illusion.
REPU = Rotary Engine Pick-Up. I collect Hotwheels along with video games, movies and comic books. Maybe I'll do a collection tour video on my channel one day.
I used to play Golden Tee on MAME with Winamp playing lounge music in the background, it was almost like meditation.
The player in the background of Japan's version of Pat Riley Basketball is Hank Gathers, who collapsed and died on the court on March 4, 1990. The game was released in Japan on March 2, 1990. They talk about a Madden cover curse, but that would have been the ultimate cover curse.
Yikes! I did not know that.

Finally, someone who doesn't dismiss old sports games. Nice interesting video.

I loved AP golf. I was really good at it. I remember shooting in the 50s all the time.
For those interested, you can watch just about every episode of The Computer Chronicles here on UA-cam.
You can and you should!
@@CGQPlus highly recommended!
Another great episode from Cyborg Gaming Quarterly! 😁 Thanks Chris
I actually discovered the Sega Retro site for manuals because of Arnold Palmer Golf and my need to know each club's distance. Great resource!
I got Quackshot when it first came out. Fantastic game
Loved the talk regarding Cyborg Justice, an underrated gem for Genesis. The mechanical depth and great sound of the game made up for the repetitive backgrounds.
Quackshot is a pretty common game. I think at one point I had three CIB‘s in the mid 2000s. Great video!! 😁
Dude I didn't think another human knew about quackshot... That game was so fun when I was little I don't even remember how I got it lol... Thanks Chris great blast from the past bud

Just happy to see Chris again. His videos are always an instant click.
i was born in 96, and i remember that indian corn non-sense. lol. mainly i remember being a kid and wondering why people left food sitting around their house.
Solid genesis video like always. Always my favorite type of video. Take it easy.
Loved this, cyborg justice was my only sega genesis game for months when i was a kid, it was good for its time especially when you had a second player.
Brilliant as usual
I’ll be playing quakshot on the mister tonight
I’d just like to quickly add also about liking a game as a kid as you didn’t have many even if it was a bad game. My game is World Cup Italia 90 aka World Championship Soccer the game you mentioned. Cool episode. Each of these games mean something to me having played all 3 to various degrees. Great stuff now we need episode 3 please ✌️🇦🇺🤙
Now I'm more excited to get the Sega Genesis mini 2. Thanks Chris :)
Especially loved the Arnold Palmer portion. Does that mean that Chris doesn't like or play Neo Turfmasters? I'm kind of surprised since it's not three click
That's close enough to a three click system. The only difference is that the system basically makes the first click for you...
Dimple Records was a great store.
We have missed you! Hope all is well. Today, indeed is a good day. 😃
Loved the video and appreciate you takes on all three. Regarding golf games, definitely give Awesome Golf on the Lynx and Fred Couples Golf on the Game Gear a go as those are really great golf games imo. Take care and keep up the great work.
...Mickey Mania never gets any love.
WTF so jumbo from lee trevino fighting golf is a real dude
arnold palmer's the best golf game ever I loved playing it with my best friend all the time and I don't even like sports!
Hey Chris!!!Miss this!!!! Hope all is well. Great work!

Votre prononciation du nom "Infogramme" est en fait très bonne.
Hahah, thanks!
Soft Spot Games, maybe a good idea for an episode Chris?
I feel like a lot of the Weekend Rental episodes fall into that category. But I'll keep it in mind for the future!

The NEC guy did not show any cool games on Computer Chronicles. I watched it awhile ago, but he may have not shown anything, or very little.
