What We Found Buried On This Hill Shocked Us!- Arrowhead Hunting

- This mountain or big hill as they call it in central Mississippi (being flatlanders like ourselves, we call it a mountain) has been giving up its archaeological treasures for some time now. Once again Al invited us up to hunt it with him and we took him up on the invitation. As usual we weren’t disappointed. The arrowheads, tools, cache blades and performs were incredible. We had Ricky Baham of Iti Tashka Taxidermy was with us and he was able to add some cool tallahatta quartzite artifacts to his collection. There is a link to his Facebook page below. We also take a quick look at some of the incredible arrowheads Matthew and Chris have been finding just up the road a bit. Of further interest, a couple of years ago we did a “Between The Tines” podcast with host Dustin Wascom and Ricky. There is a link below if you would like to listen to that also. Ky, hope if spelling the name right, looks like he got into a cashe of preforms. Is that Tallahatta? Its hard to tell. I'm guessing that's a middle archaic site. Y'all correct me if im wrong. You guys sure have a blast diggin and looking for artifacts. Enjoy every minute of it. I think its one of the most exciting hobbies there is. Like you guys are doing is creating bonds and memories for life particularly for the young ones. It's something they'll remember and treasure for their whole life

Thanks. I don't know how many cache's have come off this ridge but it's a lot. Some of the TQ, the high quality stuff, holds up great but the other is affected so negatively by this high acidic soil down here.

@@HeartbreakerRelics yes sir, got few places where we averaging 12 points per person every 3 hours and several are evans.

So thought i would take the time to explain and maybe in process give yal a slightly different view when diggin up those points' :) so the little notches from the roots' are beleive it or not' from the tree emitting acids back into the ground to disolve and digest minerals to be taken back up in the tree's so there actually getting eaten by ole mother nature herself' has taken that point probably that tree's entire existence to achieve that level of breakdown on a stone'. so better get to it before there gone' lol :)

Absolutely i would imagine the process is probably accelerated to a degree if there not local area stones' the tree's may even break them down faster than normal if its a mineral the tree doesnt have many other sources to extract it from' :)
Are they Pickwick preforms?
We have considered that possibility. Also may be Benton preforms. We find both on this site.

What ancient Indian tribe made those? Here on our farm in east central Miss, there were the Tiou Indians. A burial site was close to my home, untill the hill side was hauled off for fill dirt elsewhere. Ive found 6 different areas that had points laying on the ground.
These artifacts were made so long ago all we know is a general culture, probably Archaic due to the amount of Archaic points found on this ridge. The only tribes we know anything about are the ones that were here during the historic period, much later.

I've never been able to yield anything digging, even on a confirmed campsite. How do you guys come upon diggin locations??

This video should explain it. Once you find an area that has a possible site on it then you find landowners name and contact him/her and ask for permission. Hope this helps and good luck.

Why would they leave these points there and not take all of them when they left area?
If you think about it every point and tool that has ever been made is still out there somewhere in some form. Rock doesn't just go away. Most of what we find are used up knives or damaged points or preforms. Also these were utilitarian to them. They had no where near the level of respect that we have for them. They were like bullets or small change to us today. How many pennies, nickels, quarters or dimes do you think you have ever lost? They would lay them down and never come back to them or loose them in the ground clutter. Some were cached with plans to return to them later and they just never made it back for whatever reason.

I don't know what a free-form is but I'd suggest what you're holding is a version of a tomahawk or a hatchet
A "pre-form" or cache blade is an artifact that has been worked down to it's smallest transportable form without going into the finishing stages. It was much easier to do this than to carry huge boulders or rocks to where ever their permanent camp or village was.
Yep different steps in the knapping process cobble becomes a core which is material the flakes are removed from a turned to tools. These flakes or cobble can first be worked to a blank which are rough shaped early knapping stage just removing excess material and imperfection like cracks and stuff then that’s worked down to the preform which is closer to final finished stage shape and thickness might be more triangular form. From there it has the details like notches and possibly thinned more and final edges straightened and such.
